Living in Delaware and traveling up and down the coast for both work and leisure, I have always wondered what the odd towers were along the beaches of the Kent and Sussex counties were. After picking this book up and finding out what the amazing construction and planning that went into guarding the coastal US during WW2, I have started planning my trips down to see these items direct and learn more about them while there.
While traveling, I always keep my eyes out for independent books stores to patronize, and this summer I visited Bethany Beach Books at Bethany Beach, DE. I also like to pick up local history books while visiting a locale, and Delware's Ghost Towers was one of three local history books I purchased.
After driving by a "ghost tower," I wanted to learn more about the abandoned structure with a nearby billboard displaying a "Save the Ghost Tower" message. Mr. Grayson's title familiarized myself with a piece of WWII stateside history that I was unaware.
An excellent resource for anyone interested in the military defenses along the East Coast during our early involvement in WWII.
Quotations:
"Along the ocean shore, suspended particles of salt give the air just enough nighttime luminescence to hold the glow of electric light bulbs and conveniently to silhouette ships for a submarine on the hunt" (15).
Fort Miles (near Lewes, DE) "deployed and controlled extensive underwater minefields an dan anti-submarine net across the mouth of the bay between Delaware and New Jersey" (21).
