Nonfiction/ Twin Text Entry #4

The nonfiction book Pigs is an informational book that provides facts about pigs. This book teaches children about pigs including where they live, what they eat, and how pigs act. Pigs also describes the different types of breeds and the environment each breed lives in. I chose this book because it is a very informative book that children can learn from. I like how this book describes the different settings pigs live in with a picture of the pig and the environment on the same page. This helps students get a better understanding and actually be able to picture the pigs in their environment.

I paired this with the fantasy fiction book Charlotte’s Web by E.B White. Charlotte’s Web is a great childhood book about a pig named Wilbur. A little girl named Fern saves Wilbur when her dad was planning to kill the piglet. Fern takes care of Wilbur until Wilbur gets to big and she has to get rid of him. Wilbur goes to Ferns uncles farm where he meets a spider named Charlotte. Charlotte helps to make sure Wilbur does not get killed and eaten for Easter dinner. Charlotte spins messages in her web. Because of Charlottes words, Mr. Zimmerman thinks his pig is now famous and decides to enter Wilbur in the country Fair where Wilber earns the top prize. When it was Charlotte’s time to go, Wilbur helps to keep Charlotte’s eggs safe until they hatched.

I paired the nonfiction book Pigs with the fiction book Charlotte’s Web because they both discuss the lives of a pigs. Charlotte’s Web uses some of the key concepts from the book Pigs by describing where Wilbur lives and the different environments he has lived in. In addition, Charlotte’s Web shows how Wilbur grows from a piglet to a pig. I felt as though Charlotte’s Web was a good book pairing to Pigs because it is a heart-warming book about a pig that kids can relate to. Charlotte’s Web is a very inspiring book that children remember.

The target audience for these two books would be primary to intermediate school age students from grade 3 to 6. Although Pigs is an easy read there is more detailed content and concepts about the different types of pigs and their natural habitat. Charlotte’s Web is a chapter book with more mature content and vocabulary as well as less pictures. I would recommend this book pairing to children who love animals, especially pigs, and are interested in learning more.
