This is a book written by a man who is able to analyse various parts that make up a country and a people, from its press to its theatres, universities to politics... Furthermore, Cohen-Portheim is cultivated enough to draw comparisons between other major European power, and the USA.

I find that the arguments on the relationship between UK & Continent still ring true to this day to some extent, especially in the midst of this Brexit mess. With the EU, UK has probably became much closer to the Continent than the author would have imagined, however he mentions that the UK would most likely be involved to have a voice and more control in the relations of the Continent than be out, which reminded me of an episode of Yes Minister, where Humpfry has said the same exact thing about about the EEC.

The colonialist approach in the conclusion, which states that the Empire's potential fall would be the downfall of the hegemony of the "White Man" proved to be true, with the years of decolonisation, along the the ultimate independence of India.

The author mentions how England does not understand the Continent, and vice versa. Yet he has managed to compose of a work which would have been essential to the Continentals to understand England, as an outsider that knows it exceptionally well.
