Once again, I have been throughly entertained by Jeaniene Frost. She never fails to creare interesting and captivating plots.

However, I still feel that this series is not as good as her Night Huntress books. The romance here, although very nice, is not as dramatic and breathtaking as Bone and Kat's is. Although, it is still better than most romances in Urban Fantasy books. Nevertheless, I missed more intensity regarding to emotional conflicts inside the romance.

The mythology that sustains the plot is not one I am a fan of. Personally, I am not interested in the christianity based concept of angels versus demons, good against evil, free will stuff and all that. I have read a few books based on that, but it is just a topic that doesn't really attract me and I find quite absurd in general. Which, as a consequence I tend to feel somewhat more disconnected towards those stories. I read this series despite knowing that my preferences distance me from the Christian mythology, I knew that it would cripple my overall enjoyment of the books, but since I am pretty much committed to read anything that Jeaniene Frosts writes, I went for it. After reading the whole series, and despite my personal preferences, I don't regret it.

I can't wait to read more of this author.

The Brightest Embers is the third and final installment in Jeaniene Frost's Broken Destiny trilogy. This was a fast-paced ending to an interesting and original urban fantasy story which I enjoyed overall. The writing style felt a bit young (relationship angst, poor communication) despite the leads being in a married relationship, and this finale ended quite abruptly which confused me, leaving me wondering if there might me a novella or such to come. Let's hope so.

Jeaniene Frost's Broken Destiny trilogy include the following installments as of December 2017:
1-The Beautiful Ashes
2-The Sweetest Burn
3-The Brightest Embers

My feelings are a little mixed on this book. I liked it but it didn't wow me in any way. This is the third book in the Broken Destiny series which really does need to be read in order since each book builds on the events of the previous installments. I thought that this book brought the series to a satisfactory conclusion and was a fairly quick listen.

Ivy and Adrian continue their quest for the hallowed weapons that they began at the start of the series. They need to find the spear before anyone else can get their hands on it. The problem is that should Ivy decide to use the item it will most likely kill her. Ivy wants to do what is right and Adrian wants to protect Ivy. Can they both achieve their goals?

Ivy got on my nerves in this installment a little more than I remember from previous books. At times, it seemed that she was just trying to create drama. In the last installment, Adrian and Ivy were in a good place in their relationship but of course that can't last. It just seemed like unnecessary drama to me. She also had such a hard time figuring out something that was painfully obvious to me that I had begun to doubt her intelligence. She didn't drive me crazy throughout the whole book. There were times that she seemed really strong and willing to sacrifice herself for the greater good. It is just that when she annoyed me in this books she really annoyed me.

I thought that this book did some things really well. There were a few surprising revelations that I did not see coming. I really enjoyed the scenes with Brutus in the book. He became my favorite character in the series because of a few of the scenes in this book. I did feel that the ending of this story was a bit rushed and would have liked to see just a bit more to really help wrap the series up.

Tavia Gilbert did a great job with the narration in this book. She handles a variety of characters very well along with a wide range of emotions. Her voice was very pleasant to listen to and I found myself able to stay focused on the story for hours at a time. I would not hesitate to recommend her narration.

In the end, I thought this was a decent trilogy and I am glad that I read it. I do prefer Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series but found this trilogy to be interesting and unique. I look forward to reading more from this talented author.

I received a review copy of this audiobook from Blackstone Audio, Inc. via Audiobook Jukebox.

Initial Thoughts
I don't know 3 stars? 4 stars? Somewhere in there, I guess. I liked the book but found that Ivy got on my nerves more than I would have liked. She also had a hard time figuring out something that seemed pretty obvious to me. I thought that the ending was a bit rushed and would have liked a bit more to wrap things up. I really enjoyed Brutus in this book. The narration was very well done and it was a pretty quick listen.

3-3.5 stars! Honestly, I wish there could've been more at the end! It seemed too abrupt of an ending for a final book of a series. Review to come!

Jeaniene Frost once again proves how amazing she is as a writer with The Brightest Embers. I've loved her books since I read my first Cat and Bones book and couldn't put it down. I love that she has branched out to other areas of the paranormal outside the vampire world. She creates such incredible stories.

The Broken Destiny series was a wild ride, for sure. I don't want to say it isn't as good as the Cat and Bones books because it really is, especially this last one. They're just so different that they are both good in their own ways.

This last book continues the story of Ivy and Adrian. They're married now and busying searching for the hallowed item Ivy will need to save all of those humans trapped in the demon realms and destory Demetrius, Adrian's father, forever. It's a wild ride from start to finish with secrets kept on both sides, more Adrian than Ivy. Although, Ivy's secret is a doozy.

If you've enjoyed the first two books in this series, you will absolutely love this last one! I really only had one problem with it and that there was no epilogue. Other than that, it was very good. This book had me laughing and crying. The love between Ivy and Adrian is at the forefront of this story and the sacrifices they are both willing to make, may just tear out your heart.

I collect my fave author books in paperback so it's harder to have the quotes. I gave some really good ones in my updates.

Don't wait to read this one as it is really good and a great ending to this wonderful series.

Quotes & Faves:

I still managed to have some to put here! :)

I love you, Ivy. You made very moment of the hell I experienced worth it because it brought me to you. You're the only part of my life I don't regret, and I will love you from now until the moment I see you again.

My heart can't take it! This book was so good!!

Jeaniene Frost goes out big with this final book in her Broken Destiny series, though really, when you’re talking about an epic fight between ancient factions of good an evil, anything less would be a total letdown. This third installment picks up right on the heels of book two, where our hero Adrian has betrayed his wife yet again. It’s in his Judean blood… it’s his destiny… but this second betrayal is almost worst than the first one because A) they’re married now and B) he does it for love. On one hand, there’s no doubt of his devotion, but on the other, you just want to shake the guy for being so thickheaded. Then the waiting begins for the other shoe to drop.

This book follows our couple on their search for the final holy relic that can defeat the demons and free their human slaves. Unfortunately, Adrian’s really leading them on a wild goose chase for a while; he just wants to protect Ivy from the unavoidable death she’ll face if she tries to wield the spear. Of course, the truth comes out–it always does, and these two have to come to terms with their conflicting priorities.

There’s a lot of action and the plot moves at a good pace. The romance is really more of the same from book two, which is both good and bad, depending on how you look at it. It doesn’t really tread any new ground, but if you liked this dynamic in the last installment, you’ll probably enjoy it again. There are some good sexy times and a fair amount of teeth gnashing, but the growth is less about the relationship and more about the main characters as individuals. That is to say, Ivy must grapple with whether she wants to sacrifice her life for others and Adrian must determine whether he is capable of overcoming his destiny to let his wife follow her chosen path.

There are times it feels a little trite or kind of on the nose with the religious themes, the self-determination and sacrifice. Ivy comes off a bit too good to be true here and there. And there’s a special bonus for her and Adrian that defies explanation a bit. But the ending is sure to satisfy anyone who has stuck with the books from the beginning. I thought it was the best in the trilogy. (This is not a standalone, BTW. If you want to try the series, start with The Beautiful Ashes, book one, but be warned, it feels a lot closer to YA/NA than the series ends up.)

Though Frost’s Night Huntress books and spinoffs are a bit more in my lane, I’m glad I gave these books a try and followed through to the end. It was worth the read.

2,5 Stars :(

So I hate giving Jeaniene Frost a bad review. She's one of my favourite authors and the one who opened my eyes to the amazingness that is paranormal romance. But I have one rule - if I skim any part of a book, it gets 3 stars or less... and I skimmed a lot of this book.

The first book in the series got my attention and I did enjoy it, though Ivy did annoy me a bit from that book already. And the second book wasn't too bad, though I didn't love it. I don't know if the big gap between reading book one and book two allowed me to enjoy the story more but I went straight to this one after book two and I just couldn't take it anymore. The truth is this book didn't feel like a paranormal romance to me, it felt like a YA book.

From the very beginning, Ivy got on my nerves a bit but that bit turned into a festering pain in this book. She felt more like a 16 year old Belle than a kick-ass 21 year old Cat. Her obtuse response to what was happening annoyed me to no end and I found that towards the end I just didn't care.

I also didn't feel the romance between Ivy and Adrian, at times when they said "I love you" it almost felt uncomfortable. I didn't believe it the romance which is weird for a Frost book. I must also say by the time I got to the middle of this book I was over the storyline. Like I said, it felt like a YA book. The story was very predictable, I knew exactly what was going to happen because it followed the same structure throughout all three books. There were no surprises and no wow moments. Though I will give her props for bringing in her trademark violence at the end (even though it was still very muted). Jasmine is still the most annoying character and I didn't feel like any of the side characters brought anything to the book. Which again is not like Frost.

Overall, not my favourite book of hers. The series didn't really create a world I would love to live in. But Frost is still one of my favourites and I'll be reading more from her in the future.

I have been in a book slump that past couple of days; thank God I had The Brightest Embers to listen to at work. This book, the finale of the Broken Destiny trilogy was fantastic. The conclusion had everything I expect from a Jeaniene Frost book; romance, danger, demons etc... The struggle was real, but good vanquished evil at the last minute. Loved it.

*Thoughts*

The Brightest Embers is the third and final installment in author Jeaniene Frost's Broken Destiny series. As the story opens, Ivy Jenkins and her husband Adrian are attempting to find the third and final hallowed weapon that will not only save the thousands of innocent humans trapped in the demon realm, but to do so before any other demon, including Demetrius, can get to it first, and therefore turn it into a weapon that could unleash hell on earth.

It's still not easy being Ivy. Running away from or fighting supernatural enemies and an utmost mission put so much pressure on her shoulders. I think I enjoyed this one more than the others because Ivy seemed more mature and her moments of doubt made me feel for her and realize how tough and heavy these new responsabilities are. Also because for the first time, I really see Ivy and Adrian as a couple. There's a complicity between them and things are not as complex as they were. But I feel like some things should have been explain to us and I would have liked an epilogue or at least a less abrupt ending. But a great thing about this series: it never take long before the action begin.

I was so excited to see how Ivy and Adrian were going to come out on top with this one. While I enjoyed the story and the exciting ride, the end of the story left me feeling a little bit like I was left hanging. The main storyline was concluded, but we were left wondering what happened with some secondary characters and storylines. I would have liked those wrapped up a little more.

This review was originally published at Vampire Book Club.

When I read the first book in the Broken Destiny series, I likened it to Supernatural. The Brightest Embers doubles down on that similarity in a glorious fashion while packing in so much romance and a heroine who will not allow others to define her or set her course.

Basically, The Brightest Embers is nonstop adventure of a book with fights that literally bring the roof down and the kind of romance swoon-y scenes that you’ll want to bookmark for re-reads on cold nights.

The end of The Sweetest Burn threw some major kinks into everyone’s plans. Ivy and Adrian got married! (I am still excited about this scene months later.) But then Adrian learns he’s part demon, and freaks out over it. Ivy freaks out, too, but for different reasons.

So here we are with the two of them searching for the final object to defeat the demons. They’re newlyweds, which means they are learning more about each other, but they’re also discovering more about who they are as individuals and what their abilities are. Adrian struggles with wanting to help his wife, and wanting to protect her. He frets over what his demonic side will do to her, to them, to the world. …and Ivy just wants to be let in on what he’s thinking. Their emotional journey is the heart of this book, and it’s utterly captivating.

Ivy also would really like to save the world without dying. That part is pretty high on her list, too. She and Adrian’s adventures trying to find the last hallowed object add in this extravagant road trip layer to the book. So many beautiful sights, so many vivid settings. This book will make you want to travel. The Ice Hotel is going to be on your list. So prepare yourself.

I haven’t been as binge-y about books lately (heyyyy deadlines), but once I started this one there was no stopping. When you finish a book at 4 a.m. you know it was fantastic, which is even better as this book closes out a trilogy. The ending is satisfying, definitive, but also gives us a little gateway of a hook for a spinoff (no spoilers!).

If you want a book with a madcap pace, a serious adventure, and all the feels, you will glom The Brightest Embers.

I listened to The Beautiful Ashes as a "reread" right before getting The Sweetest Burn.  I was able to get both in digital audio from the library. Now I was also able to finish the trilogy with The Brightest Embers, getting the audio at the library.

Ivy is a new adult. Somehow I expected her to be less whiny and at least, learn and grow throughout the series. I was excited to think she would build a team and they would work together to find the artifacts, while she and Adrian furthered their relationship as they worked together to save the world.  Both Ivy and Adrian progress somewhat but I still found them to be rather childish and annoying.  Their relationship continues with its ups, downs and protect each other through lies or omission behavior.

The other characters, Zach, Jasmine, and Kosta are barely developed. They revolve around Ivy and Adrian with limited impact. We do get the story about Ivy's mother and how she came to leave Ivy.

Tavia Gilbert is Ivy's voice to me. She felt right and comfortable in this role.  I'm still uncertain about Adrian's sort of Russian accent but I'm used to the voice for it now. The others were good, even with the limited amount they were in the story.

The search and save the world part of the plot took the scenic route, but with more of a map this time. Ivy shows more courage and determination in this round, in addition to her passion for the oppressed. Overall, I just couldn't connect enough to these characters.  Except Brutus, I love Brutus. I am glad to know this trilogy; I love this author, but I prefer some of her other series.

The Brightest Embers was a pulse-pounding, insanely epic ending to the Broken Destiny trilogy and I hated to put it down for even a second. The emotions were more intense and the stakes higher than ever for our hero and heroine but they faced everything head on with courage–and with the knowledge that their love could conquer just about anything.

“I told you once before, my every action is driven by my undying love for you, and that, Ivy, is the real truth.”

Talk about a book hangover! Jeaniene Frost saved the best for last with this final book about Ivy and Adrian’s fight to save humanity. And what a fight it was. Now, I will say it’s not necessarily for the faint of heart, especially for those readers who avoid gory fight scenes. Frost didn’t pull any punches, detailing those passages in a very, ahem, realistic manner. Read More

I thought this book was being released in July. Supposedly the publisher decided to push back the 2nd book so the 3rd book would follow in a month.

The characters are weirdly immature. Can’t believe that this is Jeaniene Frost’s book, the creator of Cat and Bones. Couldn’t relate at all, such terrible teenage drama.

It took me some hours to get my head clear again, after finishing this book. The end was full of shocking moments and I wasn´t prepared for them at all.

Ivy knows that if she wants to free all those humans trapped in the demon’s kingdom, she has to find and use the holy weapon. But is she really willing to give up her own life to free those, she doesn´t even know? And why is Adrian lying to her and keeping important information back? Is this his way of helping her? Or has he already betrayed her?

The atmosphere is darker, and the main figure completely changed. Ivy is what we call a strong female character and she proves it on every page this book has.

Thankfully, the irony, the cynicism, and the sarcasm are in this novel too. But the story itself is totally different from what I´ve expected. That her job is a matter of belief and faith, was clear to me, but that both were essential to fulfill what Ivy was destined to do, that I thought was another story.
Once you´ve got started you can´t put it aside.

I was very happy, that Jasmine had only some short appearances. It was exhausting to see her reaction almost every time Ivy decided something Jasmine wasn´t happy with: she then turned into a hysterical screaming woman.

The only good thing was, that the author made some positive changes in this novel regarding some of her figures. It was wonderful to follow Ivy´s new way of thinking, how she fought not only for herself but for others as well. And the one scene, where she tells Adrian how she really feels about him and their marriage – fantastic!

What an end! There is so much emotion between the pages, so many unspoken things you can see, and everything fits perfect. And that end – holy smokes. The Broken Destiny trilogy is different from the author´s other series but absolutely worth your time.

This book was my favorite in the series. The second one was good but felt close (at times) to a repeat of the first. It was nice to get a little more depth to Adrian and Ivy’s relationship and see Ivy have her inner battle of right vs wrong. I appreciated the religious overtones and struggles with the concepts of a greater power that were explored but left open, in my opinion. Clearly the book is designed around there being a greater power, but Ivy struggles to understand the workings of this being as do so many on a regular basis.

I liked the ending but I feel like more was needed - for example, is Jasmine all good and will she and Costa get to be together? I hope there is more to this series in the future as I love the characters and there is definitely potential for more story!!!

Ivy and Adrian face a lot of obstacles in this action packed book.
The story is familiar and yet something was missing. It felt a bit rushed, specially at the end.
I would like to have seen a bit more, and explore that big surprise and see what comes out of it. I expected it to happen, so when the big reveal came about, I had already predicted it.

I wish there was a little bit more emotion between the characters. The whole thing felt like a big race and when they finally get to the end and you are expecting more... there isn't.

I hope that we will get to see another book with Ivy's sister and that it will shed some light into that big reveal at the end.

So this is 3.5* for me, I was tempted to round up to 4* but there were a a few too many issues for me.

I enjoyed this series and this last book was the best of all of them. The pacing was good and there was plenty of action. I even teared up a few times and laughed at others. I did feel the ending was too abrupt though. It just felt like there should've been a little more resolution, and maybe a reunion with Brutus and Jasmine, maybe? Or an epilogue about what happened to everyone after everything was over? But this was a very clever trilogy, even if it did take me a bit to warm up to it with the first book.

I think this is the last book in this series. I loved it!
The action, the twists and turns you don’t know what is going to happen. I couldn’t predict anything it was freaking great!

Ivy in my eyes grew into herself in this book and Adrian had to trust in her that she knew what was best.

I loved the war parts, I thought they were very well written and I couldn’t get enough. I wanted more.

I love the ending omg did I!

Great series loved the narration!

Possible spoiler.

This book was good but it did trigger my religious trauma by reminding me that God doesn't always help. A long time ago I used to pray and pray for help to no avail, I wont go into detail about the rest. But to find out God forbid Archangel Michael from helping the main characters really triggered me and reminded me of the reason I chose to be Pagan.

What I did like about this book is the characters still got their happy ending with or without God's and Michael's help.

Good conclusion to this trilogy. As always with this author's books, I had no trouble getting into it and it kept my interest. Though this story had lots of predictability to it, I still enjoyed it. The ending was definitely abrupt and I think there could've been more exploration into a particular situation. Maybe that will come in a subsequent novella, but the story had enough finality to me that I am satisfied with the end if there isn't more to the story in the future.

This is a fabulous a fabulous end to this series! Ivy and Adrian have their work cut out for them. It is clear that the last weapon is the most powerful and will most likely kill Ivy when she grabs it. They can’t seem to shake Demetrius – he keeps showing up where ever they end up. They are getting closer and closer to the weapon. Zack has said many, many times that he will not be able to bring Ivy back if she dies. Ivy and Adrian believe that when Ivy finds the last weapon that their lives will be over. Adrian understands that Ivy can’t walk away from saving humanity but can he stand by and watch her die. Great ending!
