Manipulation has come to carry a negative meaning but that is not necessarily true in all cases. Manipulation merely means to shape or mold something to a new, more desirable shape. Snow can be manipulated into the shape of a snowman. Clay can be manipulated into almost any shape. Small children being taught to take turns when playing and to use their manners are, in a sense, being manipulated by their parents. So manipulation is not always a negative event. Using manipulation to control the mind of another person is powerful and fascinating. Since the mind is the key to everything a human being does, the ability to control that mind gives multitudes of power and ability. Techniques used to control the mind work because they take control of the thoughts a person has. These techniques are based primarily on the method of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). Using NLP makes it possible to control other people’s minds using specific patterns and strategies. The human mind works in a specific way. It looks for cause and effect. The mind creates an event in response to a stimulus it has received. Sometimes doctors use a test called an electroencephalogram to measure the actual physical working of the brain in order to look for patterns of activity that are associated with certain diseases and conditions, such as epilepsy. The two brain states most often studied are the alpha state and the beta state. The beta state is a high-function, active state. The alpha state has much lower frequencies than the beta state. It is the place where the mind experiences calmness and peacefulness. This state is very important because it is the state psychologists and hypnotists use for programming the mind, simply because this state carries fewer thought patterns than any other state in the brain. The techniques used in NLP enable the person doing the programming to introduce thoughts into another person’s mind when it is unconscious that the person will not necessarily be aware of when conscious. The power of persuasion in NLP makes it a strong technique that is often used in fields such as marketing, politics, and the business world. Signals are used to convey thoughts into the unconscious mind that will influence the mind when the person is conscious. Skilled professionals who regularly use NLP to control other people know that the mind can be programmed to do amazing things if the person will allow it to happen. Often, people are resistant to this type of control because they are afraid of what might happen. There are countless jokes about a hypnotist making someone bark like a dog at a certain stimulus when they are awake. That is possible. But NLP has many good, positive uses. The main objective of NLP is to bring about inner changes in the way people see the world. It creates mental changes in the way events are perceived and teaches ways to engage in communication that is more responsible. It helps people make choices for more effectively responding or communicating in a given situation. It does not matter if the situation is of a professional or personal nature. These techniques enable the person to make better choices and also to feel empowered to carry out the choices. Someone taking advantage of the power of NLP will experience techniques similar to those used in hypnosis. During a therapy session, the person will be placed into a deep state of relaxation so that they are able to access the deepest section of their mind where unconscious thought is formed. They are then led on a mental quest through years of accumulated thoughts and beliefs. The ultimate goal is to access the experience from childhood that caused a particular pattern of behavior. The theory behind NLP is that all people carry all the resources needed to make positive life changes in their own minds.
