if a character in a piece of fiction had charles thomson's life story i would think the author was a dreadful writer, but here no less we have... this guy. one of the things that the very real 18th century person charles thomson appears to have done was leave his wife for another man. not even in a(n explicitly) romantic way just because he went off her and liked john dickinson more. it would also appear that he was dickinson's only friend for about eight years.
