Growing up the son of Philadelphia’s most notorious mob boss, Nick had two choices: Sell his soul or flee. It seemed like a lose-lose.
Dr. Nick Carlotti, a self-centered but gifted plastic surgeon refused to follow in his father’s ruthless footsteps. For eighteen years he remains unscathed by his family’s dark legacy but when his mother dies in a suspicious fiery car crash, he has no choice but to confront the beast head-on. An hour before the accident, witnesses observe Liza Carlotti conversing with state senator Lloyd Mays, an odd meeting given Mays’ previous efforts to take down the mob. Nick believes Mays may be responsible for his mother’s death, but it just doesn’t add up. Too many ties still exist between the accident and his father’s men, including a series of clues his mother left in her journal, a bible, and a strange paperback book. When a small-time drug dealer ends up under Nick’s care after a failed hit, the mystery deepens. Detective Maurice Rawls, a zealous Philadelphia detective uncovers strange connections between Senator Mays, a missing lounge singer, a dead prostitute, and Nick’s mother. On separate but converging paths, Nick and Rawls race to seek the truth.
Carlotti is a mix of mafia, mystery, thriller, and a whole lot of Christianity. Nick is the good member of the Carlotti family, a doctor who steers clear of all that normally goes with being a member of a Mafia family. He also stepped away from church once he graduated from high school. His father Rock and brother Eddie are deep into the drug trade. Above all that is Nick's mother, a wonderful individual and author. Liza dies in a suspicious accident that has Nick looking for answers never believing it was from her losing control of her car while driving at a high speed. He touches base with the police and a member named Rawls. He is also suspicious of a Senator Lloyd Mays who he does not like for all the work he has down trying to take down the Carlotti family when he discovers a meeting between Mays and his mother on the night of her death. Also involved in looking into his mother's death is his close friend Steve and fellow doctor Danielle, both very strong in their belief and willing to help Nick find his way. The story is a good one but any reader should be aware of the very deep thread of the Lord, Jesus, religion, good Christians, and their beliefs throughout the novel..
A novel that will have you captivated! The characters are well developed and interesting. I have read numerous books both fiction and non-fiction that are mob and organized crime related. Once again, I wish we could give 4.5 stars ratings. This book is better than a four star but not quite a 5. There were a couple of places where the story got a bit dry and draggy. Don't get me wrong overall this is a very good novel. I would recommend it as it has a variety of genres within the storyline.

This book will not disappoint you. It has twists and turns and pulls you in. It's a hard book to put down. The characters are well drawn and the plot moves seamlessly.
The book is built around family with complex drug relationships. There is a slow build of the central plot that moves intensely near the end of the story. If you like character development with a variety of good and bad players, this book will deliver!
It's not an easy task to be the son of the highest Mob member in town, not wanting to get mixed in his father's business, and trying to discover who killed his mom, All Dr. Carlotti wanted was to lead a normal family life, but due to his origins, that is not possible, and all of sudden he gets mixed in a world of intrigue, and crime. It's a thoroughly enjoyable reading! I thank the author, his publisher, and NetGalley for the copy of this book.
Great mix of action, conspiracy, romance, faith, and family. Dr. Nick Carlotti is searching for answers. Who killed his mom? Why do good people suffer? Having a father who is head of the Philadelphia mob only complicates matters. I received an advanced digital copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher and voluntarily provided an honest review.
This is a really good book from a first time author. It is not my usual pick for a book, I go more for historical fiction, but I really enjoyed the fast paced book. Murder, mob, morals, medical, romance and religion all work their way into this book.
