Sénèque est considéré comme le penseur le plus influent de la Rome antique. Ses traités - De la brièveté de la vie, De la tranquillité de l'âme - et ses tragédies - Médée, Phèdre - ont d'ailleurs contribué au prestige de la littérature latine. Fondée sur une vie en harmonie avec la nature, sa philosophie invite à se libérer des passions et à accepter avec stoïcisme la finitude de la vie. Il y fut fidèle tout au long de sa brillante carrière politique, même lorsqu'il perdit la protection du pouvoir et jusqu'au point d'accepter le suicide auquel l'empereur Néron finit par l'acculer.
