All he wants is a dinner date with his girlfriend, but there are jerks everywhere. As if Steven doesn't already have enough problems dealing with the Dreaming Lands actively rebelling against his rule, the freshly minted God of Dreams has to learn how to be a god, deal with overzealous followers, and generally get his head in the game. To make things worse, a powerful enemy has set its sights on Steven and Jessica, and the entire world could be at stake. New god. New powers. New problems. At least he's still got friends.
Eric Lahti grew up looking for UFOs and buried treasure in northwest New Mexico. Unfortunately, he never found either of them. Or maybe he did and he's just not telling. He did find some good stories to tell at parties about lights in the skies and gold in the ground, though. When he's not writing, he's programming and practicing his Kenpo. He's also an active blogger, waxing philosophical about a range of topics from writing, to martial arts, to politics and religion. Frankly, he fancies himself something of a Renaissance geek about a wide variety of things. In addition to his current books, Better Than Dead is going to be published relatively soon-ish.
Transmute is the best story yet in the Henchmen Series. Watching these completely flawed characters haphazardly stumble into sympathetic heroes shows the true talent in Lahti's writing. Sure he's sarcastic and likes to crack jokes
Fun all the way. This is what books are for - pure entertainment. I don't care what I find between the covers of a book as long as I enjoy the story. Erich Lahti is first and foremost a great story teller. I read across genres precisely to find wonderfully enjoyable tales like the ones he has very carefully developed. It is evident that he has grown as a writer since the first in the series and everything here is about the detail. Nothing is left to chance in a book that has everything I shouldn't like but loved nonetheless. I personally love the cover but there are some readers who may think this is not their type of book just because of the garish blast that it offers. Look again. The cover is beautiful in its own right and once opened, you will discover a cast of the absolutely weird and wonderful and you will become an Eric Lahti fan. I know I certainly am. This is a fantastic read Pick it up.
I love the Henchmen series, and the third installment Transmute is the best so far. Following the well developed, quirky and funny characters of Henchmen and Arise, this book grabs you and takes you for a page turning tremendous ride you wish would never stop. The development of Saxton in his own short stories has made for a wonderful, tension filled, and exciting relationship with our Henchmen protagonist, Steven. I can't wait for the next installment!
I've just finished Transmute, Book 3 in The Henchmen series by Eric Lahti. A great sequel to this refreshing trilogy. I love Eric Lahti's writing style - his tongue in cheek, honest, irreverent, humorous yet insightful writing and his larger than life characters make this series huge fun to read. A God of Dreams, two Valkaries, a hunter of monsters, an unstoppable enemy and a woman who can make dreams real. What else does a book need? Looking forward to the next one. Can recommend this.
Behind the fantastic Pulp Fiction style cover of this book, science fiction, fantasy, and a dash of paranormal come together for a rough-and-tumble ride. In Lahti’s Transmute, the action spins at an incredible speed when unlikely allies join to stop the forces intent on destroying humanity as we know it.
What I like most about this story is the complex characters. The God of Dreams, a lethal force in his own right, doesn’t terminate without a conscience. The woman never far from his side taps into the nightmarish images shaped by his thoughts, turning them into realities. Everything about the two Valkyries that join the good fight is straight out of Norse mythology, with a couple of exceptions—under their formidable exterior lies logic, and a chink in their hard-hearted nature. Then there is the man who hunts monsters. He is no longer a man, but something “other.” Add the bruja, along with her daunting magic, to this group, and you have one heck of a band of super heroes, reluctant as some of them might be.
Transmute is an action-packed story of beginnings, changes, endings, and new beginnings—all zipping along at a relentless pace. Well worth the read!
Still on the fence? Go ahead. Take a walk on the wild side. You know you want to . . .
How do you know you’ve finished an Eric Lahti book? You have a sensation somewhere between mental exhaustion and elation. To read this author’s work it is essential to surrender yourself to the characters and the world they inhabit. It’s planet Earth, but not as we know it. I could wax lyrical about specific sections of this story, but let’s cut to the chase and identify the single ingredient which makes this guy’s work a joy - the unique writing style of the author. Yes, there is plenty of action, fight sequences and superbly illustrated characters, but the author’s style is unmistakable. Lahti absorbs himself in the world he has created and this tells in the casual use of fact, phrase, or well-timed cliche. Amongst the action you’ll find yourself smiling at a snappy piece of dialogue, or the thought process of the main character. Here, we have an author with sufficient knowledge of technology, weapons and fighting to bring a fantasy world to life. Any writer could tell tales of gods, aliens, and humans, but in the Henchman series there is no time for the reader to ponder theories. Eric Lahti is one of a short list of indie authors of whom I have become a fan, and with each of those authors I try to hold back between reading their titles - they must be savoured. Thanks for the entertainment, Eric.
To paraphrase Douglas Adams, reading Eric Lahti's work is like drinking a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster. Its effects are similar to having your brains smashed in by a slice of lemon wrapped round a large gold brick.
Transmute is Mr. Lahti's latest attempt to permanently separate me from my sanity, and what a great job it does (and I mean that a sincere compliment). Some books you just gotta drop all pretense, quit killing brain cells trying to figure s**t out, and just go with it. This series has been chock full of them.
I won't go into the plot, as my therapist has told me that would be bad for me. :) But it's a great ride, the latest Lahti cocktail of humor, action, and bizarro stuff.
Transmute is the third and last book in the series though I hope there's more. There does seem to be a corollary series I need to investigate. Steven has taken the place of the god of Dreams. It's frankly taking some getting used to for him, and a bit of a problem for Jessica since they get called away by his followers almost every time they sit down to eat. This story is a bit more fantastical and introduces more characters while bringing back one surprising old character. It's a great story and a fun read. I highly recommend this author and series if you like clever writing and humor in an action story.
To be fair, I am already a fan of Eric Lahti. I have read the entire “Henchmen” series starting from book 1 and have now finished “Transmute”. I love books in a series where I can get into the specifics of the characters. I get to grow to like and know those characters as if they were family members. You smile when they triumph, you wince when they’re in pain, and you feel sad when they fail.
Eric has a storytelling style all his own. He takes you from the beginning of the book to the end and pulls you through by your nose. His books offer the same adrenaline filled ride every time and consistently. With a mix of martial arts, witty humor, and his own brand storytelling I found myself turning pages as quickly as my fingers could move. This style of storytelling is where Eric excels in why he is one of my favorite authors.
In "Transmute", we join Stephen, Jess, Eve, Wilford, and a host of other characters returning from the previous books. He even introduces us to some new characters we quickly grow to see as part of the team. I won’t spoil anything, but one of them has a sister, and she’s pretty amazing.
Note: This is not a team of incorruptible perfect human beings. As a matter fact, not even really human beings at all. They are flawed; each and every one, in their own way. However, that is what makes them special and why this team is so effective. Perhaps it’s in their inhumanity that they are most human, and certainly their most endearing.
I can highly recommend the henchman series to anyone who is looking for a great ride. While each book could stand alone individually, I would highly recommend you start the first henchman book and move forward. Even with this being the third book in the series there seems to be no sign of slowing down for this great team in this fantastic story.
