The 1943 born Northern Ireland native started writing children's books when he was a teacher in his thirties, with the aim of helping out students who had trouble reading. But he continued writing for a more-personal reason: "the act of imagining simply makes me feel good," he says. The fifty-seventh book of Sam McBratney's career, and his first book with Candlewick Press, was the much-loved GUESS HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU, which has sold an astonishing 15 million copies worldwide, and is available in 37 languages. "This is not the sort of thing you expect when most of your books have been remaindered," the author admits. "But, as the frog trapped in the milk discovered, if you keep going, sometimes you find yourself walking on cream cheese."

Where does Sam McBratney get his inspiration? "I told my children stories when they were young," he says, "so when I write I try to think of what they would have liked." But there may be another source guiding his writing as well. The author's father--who worked as a type compositor with the BELFAST TELEGRAPH, and whose favorite books were westerns--is the person Sam McBratney credits for giving him his love of the English language. "Most of my picture books--GUESS HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU, THE DARK AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS, JUST ONE!, and JUST YOU AND ME--explore the relationship between a big one and a wee one," the author notes. "The big one is not called the father in the stories, but that's what he is. Although my dad died before I became a writer, the father in my stories has a voice and a presence that he would have recognized and understood."

In addition to authoring many books for children, Sam McBratney wrote radio plays for adults and a prize-winning collection of short stories. He received a degree in history and political science from Trinity College, Dublin, and worked for many years as a teacher.

This is a really lovely seasonal version of the Guess How Much I Love You books which sees Little Nutbrown Hare and Big Nutbrown Hare playing a game of winter I Spy. The ending is super cute and perfect for reminding your little one how much you love them.

Pikku pupu ja Iso pupu ovat aina hellyyttävää luettavaa. Tämä kirja pysäytti ihanalla tavalla miettimään tässä hetkessä elämistä ja tästä hetkestä havaintojen tekemistä.

If you loved the original Guess How Much I Love You, this cozy little winter adventure is like visiting old friends. Little Nutbrown Hare and Big Nutbrown Hare are back, exploring the snowy world together while playing “I Spy”, and it’s as heartwarming as a mug of hot chocolate on a frosty day. The gentle story captures the magic of winter - crunchy snow, frosty air, and that warm, fuzzy feeling of being loved.

The illustrations are as soft and comforting as ever, and the simple dialogue between the hares is full of tenderness. It’s short and sweet, perfect for snuggling up with little ones before bed. I think this one might become a seasonal favorite for families - like a bedtime tradition for snowy nights.

It’s not groundbreaking, but it doesn’t need to be. It’s pure warmth and love wrapped in a snowy setting. What’s not to love? ❤️

God here we can start this series with one of the most beautiful story of all. If you start with winter you'll find a very cozy story.
A perfect way to start this season, here you can see that little and big nutbrown hare are playing I Spy wich is very cute, it seems to have lots of moral of a fable.

Not too much but to say is so cute, so cozy you really feel relaxed at the imagination of happiness these two have.

"I spy something that belongs to me
and it's not my shadow."

This was a really tricky one.
Little Nutbrown Hare did some
thinking, and then he said,

"Can I have a clue?"

"It's little... It's nutbrown...
It's my most favourite thing...
And it can hop."

"Me!"

This is the sweetest of the seasonal Guess How Much I Love you books and most in-keeping with the original. 💕

I personally thought this was three stars but considering I’m not the target audience, I don’t think that is fair. Personally, it was my own expectations of more of the same that left me disappointed. Other than that, great!

A spin-off (or blatant money grab) of Guess How Much I Love You. There is one book for each of the seasons (Guess How Much I Love You in Spring, Guess How Much I Love You in Summer, Guess How Much I Love You in Autumn and this one Guess How Much I Love You in Winter).

I wasn’t too keen on the original but I thought I’d give the spin-off a try.

This book revolves around a variation of the “I Spy” game I played as a child – but instead of “I Spy Something Beginning with W” it takes the form or “I Spy Something Belonging To…”. This book stretches credulity with five correctly guessed “I Spys” in a row – and only one with a clue! I Spy something that belongs to a bird – it could be a beak, wing, tail, a lovely chirp – but no, the first guess is correct with feather.

The ending is just as soppy as the original. I dislike how the Little Nutbrown Hare is a ‘thing’ that ‘belongs’ to the Big Nutbrown Hare – I’m pretty sure the Hare’s would have an equivalent to the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, particularly Article 4.

I have a lot of sympathy for authors who do this, because I know they need to make a living, and this sort of stuff sells but I get annoyed by the - I wrote a book, everyone loved it so now I am going to resell it with slight variations a million times over. I find it sweet in an annoying way and I don't like the idea of one character "belonging to" another so I read it aloud as "belongs with" instead.

Having said that the children love it so I have had to read it more than once...

"Guess How Much I Love You In The Winter" by Sam McBratney.

Beautiful, warm, gentle book with simple, playful, clever dialogues and amazing, vintage style illustrations by Anita Jeram.

I purchased it for my daughter after seeing TV animation of the same and loved it. Lara loves it as well.

Definitely recommend it!!!

I love reading these books to my 2 year old daughter, this one is just as lovely as the original story. My daughter even has a soft toy of nutbrown hare which goes to bed with her everynight.
