ONE WILD ROLLERCOASTER RIDE!!! Holy hell! Cory is kicking ass and taking names dragging enemies through the fiery pits of hell with him, melding this bad boy together flawlessly. He not only brought out the big guns, he hustled the C-4, threw in assault rifles and commandeered the jets loaded to the max for this high octane bad boy that leveled the country, razed the roofs and blew them off the map. One thrilling, action packed, nailbiting, hard hitting, page flipping, block buster that makes for one spine tingling ride. Intense! Thought provoking! The trials and tribulations that the characters undergo may be fiction, but your emotions are engaged from the first sentence. An innocent mishap that becomes a bloody, terrifying juggernaut of anger, jealousy, nearly forgotten long ago feuds and hidden agendas. You experience their pain, their frustrations, their terror... but always, their love for each other.
I absolutely loved this first book in The Vikings Grim series by Barclay. Anyone who loves reading books that delve into the ancient Norse/Viking cultures should enjoy this. It’s not strictly a Viking raid/battle story and touches on old myths and other little facts about ancient living, such as what sunstone was used for a long time ago. It also discusses family life, and it’s not just the Vikings themselves who have their drama to deal with. The main character, Magnus, finds himself in an unfortunate circumstance that is really not his fault early in the book, and his entire family gets pulled back into an old feud, which affects the family members in different ways. The story is full of unpredictable twists and turns and had me pulled into it from the first few pages to the point I completely forgot what was going on around me and did not want to stop reading. The world-building was spectacular and made you feel as though you were right there watching it all unfold in front of you. It’s a rather long book, so don’t expect to have it read in an hour or two.
Explore the brutality of life in a Viking settlement in the 900’s A. D. Everyone has heard of Viking raids, but what was life like at home? Were Vikings peaceful amongst themselves? Not if your settlement’s leader was corrupt! Great historical accuracy in an epic adventure.
Magnus is a man of honor, a family man. Nothing is more important to him than his family. His family has fallen on hard times. Their cattle died, their crop yield was poor and still their leader expects large tributes.
When violence is forced on him and his son during a hunt, for the first time Magnus must lie to both his family and his community. He knows there would be no justice for him since their leader is involved in a blood feud with his family. Not only is he forced to pay an outrageous tribute despite his hardship but he must leave his family to go Viking for his leader. Magnus only hopes there will be enough spoils to better his family’s affairs.
Is there hope for this valiant man and his family surrounded by the cruelty and corruption of their community?
This is a well written book with strong characters and an intense and interesting story line. The author does a fantastic job building the story and pulls you in with his descriptive writing. He brings both his characters and scenes to life with his vividly painted scenes and takes you on an emotional journey, taking you back to the day. I loved watching the love between Magnus and Lecilia and the family and enjoyed reading their story. I was glued to the pages from beginning to end and would highly recommend this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
Exciting story with thrilling adventures of life and death. The pace is so fast, I could not put it down. Wonderfully developed characters with surprising twists and turns in every chapter. I cannot wait for book two!
