Secret Keepers #2

House of Imperial

Rate this book
Callie has spent her life moving towns every four months in a bid to “stay off the grid." Her only family is a paranoid mother who believes there’s a race of supernatural beings out there actively searching for Callie. A race who could destroy Earth if they get their hands on her. Callie’s never seen one thing to suggest there’s any truth to mom’s insane ramblings, and at the age of eighteen now, she’s grown numb to her reality – she’s never going to have a normal life.

That is, until they move to New Orleans. The moment Callie steps foot into the Quarter, hears the jazz music, feels the soul of the city, the cold shell she’s built to protect herself starts to thaw.

Then they come for her.

Turns out her mom’s stories are quite real, and whatever happens, Callie’s empty world will never be the same again.

"If today had taught me anything, it was that true darkness was not the absence of light. It was the absence of hope. Hope that things could get better one day. Hope that the light would return."

The second book of this series was definitely something my high-school self would have adored. My actual self? Well, I definitely enjoyed it and I liked it more than the first one. It was easy to read, I got to see more of old characters like Emma and the Darkens and the new female MC was more badass than the first one and less of a damsel in distress. I still think it's a good read for fantasy lovers who need a quick and catchy series.

“Is it still called kidnap when I’m an adult?” I fumed, the random question snapping out.
Chase flashed me an amused grin. “Adult-nap?”
I shrugged, narrowing my eyes on some of the resistance closest to me.
“That’s more like an afternoon nap.”
Marsil chimed in: “Maybe abduct?”

》》The Plot《《

As we know from the ending of the first book, Laous wishes to destroy the treaty between humans and Daelighters and for that he needs all the secret keepers, aiming now to find the second one with the help of Emma’s necklace. Daniel Imperial has sworn to do everything in his power to stop him, going to New Orleans to try and get to Callie first, the keeper born in his house.

This book is narrated from Callie's perspective, taking us from New Orleans to Overworld and back to Astoria, giving us fights, more time at the high-school, some kidnapping and a few death scenes.

》》Characters and Relationships 《《

👩🏼 Callie

"Never underestimate a woman. You’ll end up on your knees holding your balls."

If there's something I like in my novels is a female MC who can fight. And Callie can definitely do that. Unlike with Emma, for whom I feel sort of protective just because she was the first one to be introduced, I actually liked Callie for being so fiery (figuratively and literally at the same time).

👦🏼 Daniel Imperial

“Bringer of light. Keeper of souls.
Unification of worlds.”

We met Daniel in the first book, when he helped Emma through the justices and in this novel he got the chance to not be a third wheel around her and Lexen anymore. I feel like there was more to his character and I can't help but think I was robbed of the chance of discovering more depths for him, but at least he got his sort of a happy ending, so there's that.

👦🏼👩🏼Daniel and Callie

Emma got this weird dreamy look on her face then. “This is just like Hades and Persephone. Which maybe means it will all work out for the best.”
She winked at me. Two blank faces from the men, but I got her reference exactly, and had to laugh. “You’re right. I’ve now tied half my life to Daniel and an alien underworld.”

Nice relationship but again, I have that feeling of being robbed of all the possibilities. There was no banter here and things felt a bit rushed but, well, who can deal with fate, right? Maybe some people (or erm... aliens) really experience love at first sight.

👩🏻‍🦰👩🏼Emma and Callie

"Blinking a few times, I suddenly knew who I was about to meet. Secret Keeper number one. Emma.
Emma Walters stared at me. I stared back. Both of us taking a moment to assess the other. I felt a spark of something between us, same as I had with Daniel, but different. Like camaraderie, a sense of kinship because of who we were and the things we had gone through. Plus, she was wearing Converse shoes, which in my books was a very good start to any friendship. We matched. That was a thing, right?"

Now this is a ship I can definitely get behind. If there's something I absolutely adored in this book was the relationship between the two girls. This truly made me fangirl. Throw Star in the mix and it had me grinning like an idiot.

Favorite Scenes

👩🏼👦🏼 Callie hitting Daniel the first time they met
👩🏼 Callie's obsession with coffee and the scenes where it became obvious
👩🏻‍🦰👩🏼 The meeting between the two girls
👩🏼🧑🏻 Callie meeting Jero

“Jero Darken at your service. I heard Daniel had tied himself to a delectable human, but I have to say, you should leave him immediately and join your soul to mine.”
With a chuckle and shake of my head, I removed my hand from his.
“Perfectly happy being an Imperial. Thanks for the offer though, Darken.”
Then I mimicked the wink he’d given Emma.
Jero threw his head back and laughed, before he straightened. “I really need to find a human of my own. You’re delightful.”

Only one thing left for me to do after this scene: I VOLUNTEER AS TRIBUTE!

🚽 The scene with the alien toilet
🔥 The fire powers
👩🏻👩🏻‍🦰👩🏼 Emma sending Star's clothes to Callie and that cute note

》》Conclusion《《

I do like it. The ideas are great, the characters are interesting and the fact that each book from this series is narrated from a different perspective is new, but I constantly feel like it needs more layers. I can't shake the feeling the author could have done sooo much more with this world and I'm a bit disappointed by that. But I'll still get the next two books because it has my interest and, as I've said, it's really easy to read. Plus, I can't say no to dashing supernatural males.

"Damn you, romantic comedies. You’ve given me unrealistic expectations, and now I wanted a Lexen. Not him, exactly, because he wasn’t my type. Too pretty, too broody, too in love with another woman. I did not poach. That got you a straight punch in the boob."

Also, I totally relate to this. Just leaving that here, in case you guys can feel my and Callie's struggle.

This series shows potential. It also reminds me of 'Judgement of Six series' by Melissa Haag which I enjoyed a lot but instead of six we have 4 secret keepers.

Never underestimate a woman. You'll end up on your knees holding your balls.

Callie was fun to read, definitely an improvement from Emma. But while Emma lacked in #1, we had his amazing mate Lex to compensate. While Emma got naked in Lex's bathroom, after being kidnapped by the dude, Callie actually shows some intelligence compared to Em...

It look a lot of control not to run a bath, but getting naked in a house of alien dudes didn't seem like the smartest move. I'd wait and see if any of them attacked over the next few hours before I flashed my goods.

Daniel was ok-ok. Not so much of interesting apart from silent and broody.

Bringer of light. Keepers of souls. Unification of worlds.

Um...ok...

As Laous plans to track down the location of third secret keeper, by using Callie's blood, she almost dies until Daniel ties her soul with hers and they become instant soulmates or something. To be frank, it was hard to digest concept but moving on....of course, our h is starts to be smitten by this attractive alien slowly

Daniel was too good to be true. I was starting to worry that one day, when my soul was strong enough to be without him, I would find that another part of me couldn't be separated from him. My heart.

Score one for Daniel.

"Are you all rich?" I asked with a sigh. Logically, I knew money wasn't everything, but did they have to have money, amazing looks, heights, intelligence, cool light transportes, everlasting life....? Come on, share the gifts, people....aliens.

I don't know why they have so much Callie, let me check with author....but score two for Daniel...

The only thing that hampered the enjoyment of this book is ending. It was too sad to be appreciated in PNR genre. oh well....

Moving on to next one...once it will be released in July.

Secret Keepers 2

My main issue with this book is that everything seemed so forced upon the reader. I don't think I like Callie, but we were instantly supposed to accept her and Daniel's relationship? They met in New Orleans and Daniel wanted to help her and next thing you know they're soul bonded and next thing you know they're in love? I am not buying it. I am disappointed because I really felt the strong attachment to Daniel in House of Darken and I wanted him to have an elaborate story line worthy of him. I wanted him to feel better and make him feel better. It just was very rushed and I really didn't enjoy reading this book as much as I read the first book in this series. I will always love Emma, Lexen and Star! Marsil dying caught me by surprise. He was lovely and I am thankful Callie stayed with him. I'm still not connected to Chase or Xander. I'm not sure if this is going to tie into the next 2 books and I'm not sure if I'm going to continue. It's a 2.0 rating. Happy reading.

Sometimes, you have to put a book down...it's just not captivating. Life is too short for bad books, amiright? This one....actually....a step further. I finished reading it so that I could give a legit review.

I knew it was going to be similar to the previous Secret Keepers story, I mean, why not? It started off good, a new character...totally different personality, different situation, different skill set. Then it starts sounding familiar. She knew from the first moment she saw him that they were meant for each other? Really? She's known NO love her whole life. Yes her challenges were different, she got kidnapped and nearly had her mind wiped. She developed skills that the previous character never even hinted at. But no. By the time I finished, I felt like the author could put a new name on the character, have her from another American city she's never visited (but hopes to some day), send a baddie to hurt/maim/kidnap her or someone she loves, have the goodies rescue her and BOOM, new story.

I know I don't need to say it...but I'm going to. I'm done. There will not be a #3 in my library.
I read a lot of books and I'm okay with a cheap read...something entertaining and fast. I'm okay with cliche. I can even cope with the whole "soul mate from the first second, when we were 16" trope. I have to draw the line at the formulaic writing. Nope, be more creative or you loose me.

This was not a lot of fun to read.

I truly hope this was the weakest book in the series cause I need some good mind-numbing plots here.

Now, I have some bad news to share you guys.
The romance? It doesn't get better. Everything is insta and the romance cliches are dripping off the pages. (might just be me, cause my friend Amy definitely doesn't agree)

The h, Callie, was super annoying and I honestly don't even know why. She really rubbed me wrong. The addiction to coffee thing was kinda cute though.
What was even worse is that everything about the Daelighters is repeated every book ad nauseam cause none of the Secret Keepers really know and I get it from the plot perspective but honestly reading it over and over is giving me a migraine.
(or it could be the migraine that's giving me the short fuse. It's a toss-up.)

Like book 1, while I did enjoy this read, I felt it moved slowly in parts, taking a long time to get to what felt like the important bit and felt like it spiralled out of control in others.

The world building is interesting and I like the contrasts of the different parts of overworld.

I didn't initially warm to Callie in the beginning but liked her more as we moved through the book. I liked that we got to see a lot of Lexen and Emma from book 1.

I will continue reading on in the series and give this book 3 1/4 stars

I am not really a fan of a series that has different characters amongst them which in each book fall in love with a correspondingly different love interest, in the same world or environment. So, I was pleasantly surprised that this series has enough refreshing elements to the plotline that it carries on seamlessly. The characters themselves are either intrinsic or fresh, and the story continues with an overriding theme.

The romance is conducted integrating the new personalities, and the plot thickens. The characters have enough depth to keep them interesting, and the female main characters are credible and likable. I’m looking forward to the next novel.

I’m seriously loving this series! It’s a freaking delicious treat esp if you like PNR-Fantasy reads.

The MC’s are kickass. The pace is action packed and fast. It has feels and heart tugging moments. Just so so soooo good all around.

I cannot wait for the next book to come out!

"He shouldn't have entered my place acting like a creepy shit. Creeps get punched in the dick."
By far my most favorite quote in this book!

Continuing on from the first book we have a new secret keeper, Callie.
She is used to being on the move because her mom is essentially paranoid. Beyond paranoid actually. But after they land themselves in New Orleans things seem to get more intense for them. Having been prepared her whole life by her mother she now actually has to face the fact that everything she has learned is real. She has learned to hate Daelighters, like her mother, but she wasn't prepared for Daniel.

Daniel is the Imperial Overlord Major and has taken it upon himself to find and protect Callie at any and all costs. He didn't expect what he found. Completely different from Emma, Callie is athletic and a fighter. Physically and mentally. She won't be pushed around and he likes that.

This book has a very different feel than the first. It has a bit more dark overtones and is mostly in Overworld. It is more heartbreaking because of the people and the emotions this book focus's on. It's a whole new view on a world that we're beginning to understand.

This book shows more of Overworld and how complex it is. It also shows the family tie that the 4 boys (Lexen, Daniel, Chase, and Xander) have even though they aren't blood related. Overall this is a quick paced easy read that I enjoyed and didn't want to end.

“My coffee was long gone, but I still held the cup in the hope it would be refilled at some point.”

I can relate to this main character.

I was a little on the fence about this series. The first book was ok, I wasn’t crazy about the romance but the set up for the world building was good. But this book blew my expectations out of the water.

I had no idea going into it that this is a Hades/Persephone retelling. That is my absolute favorite kind of retelling. The main character was funny, the love interest was sweet. It was just really good.

The second Secret Keepers installment introduces the House of Imperial which is akin to the underworld. Think Hades and Persephone.

The storytelling here is much longer and involved to explain who are the mysterious Daelighters and this strange otherworld ruled by the four Houses.

Callie, who has been on the run for most of her life, meets the bold brash Daniel for the first time when he attempts to rescue her.

But seeing the tall, bald and gorgeous man coming at her, Callie does the only thing she can think of which does nothing to endear her to him. I had to laugh at such an auspicious introduction.

Though I was spent quite some time learning the definitions of this Otherworld, it’s clear that secret keepers are bound in some way to the minor overlords. But what’s not clear is why they all need to go to high school on earth in order to save the world.

Callie and Daniel’s relationship had a lot of obstacles and darkness but the cool factor was their unbreakable bond and ability to control fire.

Looking forward to the next two installments!

While this story line was the same as the first book (girl from earth and shifter from alien world meet and fall in love while also saving both worlds from evil doers) , the characters were portrayed waaay differently.

Daniel was…. well, he felt like he held back emotionally a lot in this book. Think strong silent type. And I didn’t feel he was like that in the first one, so that was a bit weird for me to adjust to. As I read on I realized why he was that way. As the keeper of the dead he lost everyone he ever loved eventually which makes for a lonely existence I suppose. Plus he is constantly dealing with death and judgement. That takes a toll on anyone I’m sure. Of course there is another reason why he seems so meloncholy and withdrawn but I don’t want to spoil it, suffice it to say, I get it.

Callie was quite honestly, typical. She didn’t really stand out. Yeah she was a strong lead and a sassy badass when it came to fighting but I didn’t find her to be especially….well special. I didn’t see how they complimented each other. Except maybe she knew what it was like to not have anyone close. However, they handled their situations way differently and I didn’t believe they had any real chemistry.

The real winner in this book was the big bad. OMG, he was such an evil genius! I loved how unredeemable he was. He went in whole hog and was constantly adjusting to them thwarting his plans. He had back up plans for his back up plans. He believed he was in the right, making a him a very formidable adversary indeed.

Now it might sound like I shouldn’t have given this a 4 star based on the review, but you don’t get how much I enjoyed the big bad. He is the one who made this story.

House of Imperial by Jaymin Eve a majestic five-star read. This is the second book in Secret Keeper series and they just go from strength to strength. Jaymin Eve I don’t know how you write woman with so many amazing qualities, and such a love of coffee and Converse, it’s just the little things that make her that much more adorable. Callie feels like she has come home when she finds herself in New Orleans, but is it the place, or someone else who’s there? The house of Imperial will break her and shape her, as Callie will face many battles; the question is will she win the battles or the war? The Secret Keepers are a bunch of great women and we have only met two. I can’t wait to meet the next two. All I can say is how long till book three? As I really need book three in my life!!

I enjoyed this book as I did book one. Callie is a serious badass unlike the first secret keeper, who was a klutz. Daniel is the Overlord of Imperial and he is an extremely sad soul. The world building in this book is once again, amazing. The story line is quite similar to the first book. I do like that even though the story line is similar, the Overlords are not at all a like, there world are nothing alike, and neither are the secret keepers. Laous seems to get more devious, more evil in this one, so it was a bit darker than book one. There is a small scene where sex is implied, but nothing explicit and there's probably more on cable television that would worse. I would recommend the book for any reader ages 13 and up.

4/08/2019 I was contemplating what shelf to put this book into for a while because I never got around to finishing it.... I did like it but I didn’t enjoy it. I felt disconnected and therefore I decided to drop it for a while. Maybe one day I will return to this series when I’ve been convinced that it’s not a similar story line for each book repeated 4 times.... 🤷🏻‍♀️ I really liked the first book so hopefully I can find it in myself to return.

It's a good thing sweet baby Daniel was introduced in the first book. Otherwise the pacing/fated insta-love would not have worked.

BUT I love Jaymin Eve's brain and I am definitely excited to read book three.

Not my favourite series from this author. The story is okay, the characters are okay, but I don't love it enough to keep reading the next 2 books in the series. So, I'll just leave it here. It is the first series by Jaymin Eve that I've read and haven't loved, so I'll just move onto the next series and hope I enjoy it more.

House of imperial

I was happy to see that the second book flowed at a different pace than the first book. I was worried they would all be very similar. I liked that Callie was strong and stood a chance against the daelighters. I liked Daniels compassion. His story was much more complicated that I first thought it was and it just made me love him more. Loving this series so far.

I liked where this story was going but I just want more. I don't mind instant love or fate or anything like that; if you do you should avoid this book - maybe the whole series. I also didn't feel the same connection to Daniel and Callie. I liked them but not as much as Lex and Emma. I think I would like this book, and the entire series, more if they were set over more time. I understand why they aren't, considering school etc, but I just think the story would feel less rushed and false if it took longer.

Anyway, I still enjoyed this book and I hope you do too.

SECRET KEEPER OBSESSION!!!!!!!

I absolutely could not wait to start this book after reading the first one. Jaymin Eve is just a fantastic writer. With every word she draws you in. With every description you feel everything. Her world's that she creates makes you want to live in them forever and never come home. This book was so great just as the first. Highly recommend. The personalities and relationships in these books make you earn to have that bond. It's perfect for an escape. Great job again ! Can't wait to read book 3!!!!
