Xyla does it again!

I have great admiration for authors that can take a story idea and run with it. Xyla credits one of her readers for the idea behind this story. This author doesn't shy away from controversial and thought provoking stories and current issues plaguing our society.

When the police tackle Nikita Samuels to the ground it changes all of their lives. Fast forward--seven years later and one half of the duo responsible for THAT incident is now back in her life. Crayson Fletcher's reappearance causes a ruckus and upsets the balance of the life she's created for herself.

Crayson isn't without his own demons about THAT incident and his life is just as altered--present day and past. He just wants to find a way to apologize and have some sense of civility so they can work together on the Law & Community Task Force Advisory Board.

I wondered how Xyla was going to get this unlikely couple together. This story took me outside my romantic comfort zone and made me think. I was rooting for Crayson and Nikita to get to their happy place--together!

Xyla is on my short-list of authors where I drop everything to read their work. Highly, highly recommended! Read It!

Read all of her books!

The book starts off with an incident where the hero, a cop, along with his colleague asks for the identifications of the heroine, who is driving on her trike on a sidewalk. He is right here to ask for identification. She is clearly wrong because she is driving on a sidewalk.
But instead of showing the identification, she asks them why. Yes, she has a right to ask.
But the hero doesn’t answer and keeps asking for identification. He then warns her that he will arrest her if she doesn’t give identification. Then she says why? Is it because she is black.
And then everything just happens so quickly. They manhandle her and put handcuffs on her. Many people take videos of this confrontation. And this incident change both of their lives.

She is clearly traumatized by this incident. He also has guilty feelings after this. After seven years they meet again when she is selected in the Mayor’s advisory board for the Law & Community Task Force as a lawyer. He is is in the board too. He tries to say sorry but she completely ignores him. He keeps trying. Man the way she hates him..... lol.

I loved the chemistry. Both are amazing. The beginning was great. But things got boring when they were finally together. Even the sex got boring.
I loved the heroine. I always appreciate woman who don’t chase the hero and are not desperate for him in the beginning. And I always like heroes who does the chasing. Plus the heroine is a lawyer, so extra points. This book clearly has what I love.

Would you be able to forgive a police officer whose actions have left you emotionally scarred? And would you be able to work together with him or even consider him a friend seven years later? This is the intriguing premise of Xyla Turner’s interracial romance, Crayson.

Nikita and Crayson’s paths first cross when she is a college student and he’s a rookie police officer. What should have been a routine traffic stop turns into a violent confrontation that ends up traumatizing them both.

The event changes the course of both of their lives. Seven years later, they meet again when both asked to be a part of the mayor’s task force to increase the trust and improve the relationship between communities and law enforcement.

A CONTROVERSIAL ISSUE HANDLED WITH SKILL, REALISM, AND CARE…
I was skeptical at first about how Xyla would be able to pull off this story, but I trusted her as a writer to take me on the emotional journey that both Crayson and Nikita both needed to take to find atonement and reconciliation.

The more I read about how they move forward—both approaching it with a realistic dose of skepticism and their own baggage from the past—the more I began to believe in their story and understand the message Xyla was sharing with us.

I really liked that both Crayson and Nikita are dealing with their issues. It’s not as though either of them has pretended over the years that they aren’t still dealing with the fallout from their initial encounter.

There are moments when they both feel triggered and they deal with them. I also liked that Xyla shows how Nikita isn’t trying to be the clichéd strong black woman who doesn’t need help from anyone — Nikita knows she needs therapy to deal with how she reacts to the initial encounter and meeting Crayson again, and she accepts the help and makes herself stronger by learning to use the tools her therapist has provided her with.
Since this is a romance, there is definitely a love story. Some people may balk at the idea of Crayson and Nikita coming together, but it’s handled in a way that feels believable and doesn’t oversimplify the trauma from the past.

A COUPLE OF QUIBBLES…
Do I have quibbles? Just two. While I was reading the story, I found myself sometimes wishing for more description of the weather or seasons so I’d have a better idea of when the story was taking place.

It’s a minor detail, but it’s something I missed and thought would have grounded me in the story even more. Another quibble was that there were a few times when I felt the characters spoke too formally. Again, this is not a major problem, but it did knock me out of the flow of the story.

MY RATING? 4 STARS. A RECOMMENDED READ.

Actions can always be done differently

That is what attorney Nikita Samuels and former cop Crayson Fletcher learned years later from their first interaction with each other years prior. Not only was Nikita strongly impacted by what happened by being tackled by two police officers but so was Officer Fletcher. Not only did Nikita have strong emotional triggers that affected her job as a lawyer, so was Crayson, who quit his job to start up a consulting firm with his partner. He realized that policing could be done differently in the way they serve and protect.

Years later, both Nikita and Crayson were brought together to work with each other on the same committee. They did not understand the karma behind their being reunited. Nikita had a hard time with the triggers she got by seeing Crayson again. Once she was able to get over herself and actually take the time to talk to him, they were able to come to an understanding of each other and heal to the point where they fell in love and used their relationship to help others see both sides of their first confrontation and its effects on each other.

Xyla wrote a very timely story that has its roots in "Black Lives Matter," but what we do not hear about in the news and pop-culture is how those actions affect the persons involved in those situations. Traumatic events in one's life can lead them to have triggers or PTSD, or it can cause one to have a 360 degree turn around in one's life as Crayson did. But we also see Nikita, with professional help, becomes capable of confronting her triggers to actually talk to Crayson where they both realized that they were in the wrong and could have done things differently. That healing allowed them to see each other differently with human fallibility and love. I also love how Xyla incorporated characters from her previous books and seamlessly added their relationships with Nikita and Crayson. Great job Xyla as always.

Crayson and Nikita /

Really good read and I missed her writing. As usual,
Took a very unlikely couple and made them work beautifully.

Crayson learned from his mistake and made a new life focused on fixing it. I loved to see it.
They were so good together. I was rooting for them.
Steamy as usual. He really loved her and she deserved it.

Crayson

Crayson and Nikita met under some Black Lives Matter situation which causes him to leave the police force. After seven years and reevaluation of life, they meet up again at a conference in DC. Sparks fly. You know the rest...lol.

What a great book! Xyla just has a style of writing that is so cool. I mean, she ties in real world experiences people go through in life coupled with what is going on in today's USA as far as relations between law enforcement and black/brown people. The love story between Crayson and Nikita is really compelling and as a reader, I was so impressed by how well Xyla Turner was able to convey how their feelings developed for and about each other over a series of years. It went from disdain and hate over a police brutality incident experienced by Nikita to pure love. It's amazing and super believable at the same time! I was a amazed how well she was able to do this. I can't express this enough. Read this romance!

At the scene from his POV and even after his first few encounters with her on the committee, crayson’s view of Nikita is she was being a know it alll that day. And that shit annoys me. He approached her, did explain what she did wrong and wanted her id. This was not like a traffic stop in the car where they ask for license and registration or insurance.

And I saw some reviews hating on her like she was being unreasonable. Her life before her eyes. Couple that with the harass and embarrassment of it going national. She doesn’t owe him anything and as long as she’s willing to be professional whenever they must interact, she isn’t required to speak to him otherwise. No matter if he want to make peace with what he did, apologize, etc. and she didn’t ask him or demand that he change sub-committees, she said that she would.

Got beat at her own game??? If Stevens don’t get the fuck outta Nikita’s face.

Ok. Crayson is a Mack daddy. I just hate the whole are you clean, I’m clean and on bc b/c that is not the adult thing to do.

Vic was really giving crayson the word. Go for yours. Respect

This book did not turn out how i expected it, in a good way. That it was going to be some instalove which wouldn’t have sat well with me based on how Nikita and Crayson started off. I think the author did a good job of making the gradual connection believable. It was kind of oh brother with all the friends being interracial couples. I like that she kind of poked fun at that but wish it wasn’t the case to begin with

3.00 Stars. (BW/WM). Kindle Unlimited e-book. This seems to be the author's avenue of expressing the impact of the intersection police brutality and Black Lives Matter on her as viewed through the lens of the hero and heroine in this story. Crayson Fletcher, the hero, became a police officer because he believed in law and order and a desire to serve and protect. Nikita Samuels, the heroine, grew up loving motorcycles, her parents, free expression and the law, all of which influenced her decision to become a lawyer. Early in the story, Crayson and Nikita have an encounter that impacts both their lives...Nikita is riding on the sidewalk on her Trike, a motorize cycle that's heavier than most motorcycles; when Crayson asks for her identification, she fails to produce it challenging his right to ask for it. His partner grabs for her and they fall on her, cuff her, traumatizing her. Crayson feels guilty and regretful about the escalation; but thought she wrong for endangering pedestrians and breaking the law by operating a motorize vehicle on the sidewalk and by failing to cooperate with the police. They meet again 7 years later, Crayson is heading a task force to train police officers to be more sensitive to people's responses and to deescalate potentially explosive situations. The story becomes stagnate and boring starting with their initial re-introduction through their fledging friendship and ultimate romance. So much emphasis is placed on airing their grievances and apologizing that their so called romance is lost even in their sexual interludes.

What a fantastic concept for a story....

At first I thought how will this turn out, as we all know about the real life murders of Sandra Bland and Philando Castile.
I was so impressed with how the negativity of those pointless murders was turned into a meaning and very educational story of forgiveness and understanding and tolerance. This was a powerful story for me and I loved the messages whether meant or not that I gathered from the story.
I loved how Crayson and Nikita became friends in spite of their past and how they continued to work on their triggers throughout their relationship.

This was a wonderful story linking previous characters and giving us a glimpse of their lives, like Vic and Kat Ritter from 10_99.

This was definitely one of my favourites and a must read!

Great read!

You always know how to put together two people on opposite ends of an issue, and they still find love. Crayson, was aggressive in his approach to the situation with Nikita; but was instantly remorseful. Nikita, held on to hate, and didn't understand the part she played in the situation until much later. When they met again, I was waiting for either fireworks or gunshots. 😃. I loved the way you took your time, and had them explain their points of views. What they were thinking at the time, and why they reacted in the way they did. Crayson, although an alpha make, was sweet, thoughtful and knew early on his mission was make Nikita his. She tried to fight her feelings, but succumbed to his charm. Good to see Vic and Kat, and Ryan and D'asia drop in. Can't wait for James. Thank you for keeping relevant topics in your stories. Loved it! 👍👍👍

Good Job

The writer gives us a.story with a lot to think about and not to mention we get to enjoy a sweet sexy romance, that has to deal with quite a.few.adult subjects. The subjects that are addressed in this story are not only serious but its sad to say but its.happening in 2020. Now the good is out of the way, while.we.get to.see this.relationship unfold we.don't get to experience it. The writer gives us a neat little story and wraps it in a neat bow.We get that a threat is made and we don't see or get to touch on it again,we don't.get to see this couple experience their relationship or experience it and all it.entails.This was a good story I just think it could've so much more. There were a few things that I think could have been seen and.one was dealing with Donnie.

Real good story about real life issues!

This story showed what could possibly happen when popo encounters well informed Black persons unwilling to be mistreated by cops hell bent on flexing their one sided authority. Thankfully both lived after the run in to reflect and make changes in their lives. Most of these encounters have ended with the Black person involved being killed. This story was told from both parties' perspective that allowed more clarity to the ever increasing gap between the police department and the Black Community. Very interesting construct that gives the reader food for thought!!! I also read the excerpts of other stories by Ms. Turner and was very impressed and looking to read more of her works!!! Kudos Ms Turner, much kudos to you.

A story of forgiving, redemption, and love

Crayson and Nikita was caught up in a serious situation that shifted their lives tremendously; however, even though a part of them stayed captive for seven years, it did not keep them from accomplishing their goals. When they meet again it is rough at first, yet once they both become open to healing together, a friendship is formed, and them love blooms. They still had things they had to work through, but their determination, fortitude and love for one another keep them moving forward. They both had strong support systems in family and friends who believed in them and trusted their judgment. I also respected the use of counseling. I truly enjoyed their story!

Whoa!

Okay! WhT you need to know first is that Crayson is a different type of Alpha. He started me down one direction and then BAM! Direct to the point that’s #MINE! Nikita also was different. She was slow and methodical and every decision was with much consideration. Refreshing that within five minutes she knew that was her man and future father of her kids! The warm up to their love story was the right pace and then roller coaster! Crater was an awesome insight to the injustices and boy did Ms. Xyla take it there and the writing around daily headlines was flawless! Treat yourself and One Click! Well done Ms. Xyla!

Alright that's it. I hate hate hate writing reviews because it takes away time I could be using towards reading books. But there are certain things I have decided I need to bring to attention for every book I read going forward. And that's atrocious and unacceptable editing. Especially from authors who have been at this trade for a long time. So here's one book I've come across with an absolute case of laughable editing not to mention zero proof reading. If anybody's interested in reading this one make sure you have a red highlighter ready cause you'll start acting like your middle school teacher and strike the whole friggin book!
Could have been a 5 but alas only a 4 star rating.

OMG!!! Crayson, Crayson, Crayson! The man was a possessive beast in the bed!

Okay, now that I have said that, this book was amazing. The way Xyla spins a tale so real life you think you know these people. Nikita may as well have been my co-worker or good friend. That’s how well she was written.

This story was so much more than a love story. It was a history lesson, a civics lesson and a call to action all in one. This is one for the culture! A fresh take on black lives matter and police brutality.

Crayson goes from being that cop who uses excessive force to take down a young female college student to being the force behind the change he wanted to see in the world. Crayson = superhero.

Nikita was totally in the wrong during the incident, but at the time all she could see was the police brutality cases that screamed out to her from social media. This story shows how people need to be accountable for their actions and not just place blame on others.

This was a great story representing our culture and the times. Kudos to Xyla Turner on this page turner.

I liked this story. Xyla Turner has a way of dealing with sensitive issues that allows the reader to see it from prespectives that are typically not their own. Nikita was strong and capable, despite her fears. Her strength truly shone when she recognized she needed supports and she honestly reflected on situations. Crayson was wonderful. Though, the beginning made me cringe. I liked how their story unfolded and how they had to chose to work through problems, recognizing they both had triggers, they could overcome them.

This is an adult read with lots of foul language and adult situations.
I dropped a star due to editing issues.

Wow. Tackling some hard issues!

First, I loved this book. The conflict, drama, and conflict partial resolution all happened before love/sex. These two complex characters showed a level of growth and maturity I was not expecting from this book. With all that is going on in 2020, it made me take a hard look at how I as a person evaluated some situations in comparison to the main characters. And the concept of Crayson's company I hope is a real one.
This book will make you think and make you fall in love! Thank you Xyla for having the hard conversations in this book and for being an author who loves to shake it up!

Good Read

At first I was a little was hesitant to continue beyond the first chapter. I get enough racial stuff in my face, seems like every week. I’m glad I finished the book. It was a good story. There was definitely spicy, steamy and hot moments between Crayson and Nikita. The story was down to earth, thank goodness! They both grew in their like/lust/love for each other. Now that I’ve finished it, I think I will re-read it, it’s just that good. I kept waiting for some horrible mistakes to threaten their relationship like you see ALL the time. I’m glad to say that didn’t happen here.

I can’t with U!!

Really Xyla
I read the prologue and thought there’s no way she’s going to be able to write this story so that it is realistic and with a happy ending...no way! Boy, was I wrong! Xyla you really wrote a very relatable, thought provoking, and understandable story.
I love the way you gave us very real sides of each main character. I feel many times if we (humans) could just take a minute and put ourselves in the other persons shoes, the outcome would be entirely different.
Just wanted to tell you that I absolutely loved the story. Keep up the great work.

4 & 1/2 ⭐'s 🤗

Took off a half star only because of the sex scenes which are too raunchy for me. But all the rest is just so compelling. Timely, thought provoking and relatable. Dealing with ones own truths no matter how difficult and acting with Integrity are traits so sorely lacking in too many. Crayson and Nikita begin on opposite poles. But as they merge you get swept along on that churning land mass of emotional critical thinking and whew...its just amazing! Love this couple...baggage and all and a great learning opportunity. Well Done!👍👏😊

A great combination

I am glad you matched these two together. Despite their rough beginning Crayson and Nikita really was a perfect match. Their decision to start a romantic relationship was inevitable because there connection was so powerful. They both have one common goal of making people aware of the unfair treatment of Black and Brown people. I am so glad you wrote on this subject matter.

Loved this book. Can Crayson and Nikita get pass old wounds? Can they learn to listen to each other and accept who the other is? The two struggle to get pass a trauma that occur seven years prior. Crayson has done some a lot of self student, self learning also constructive learning for community education. Their lives are going in different directions , yet they are still drawn to each other.
This is a great read, with some thought provoking issues.

Good read.

First, the author gets one hell of a slow clap from me for tackling a very sore subject. I didn't think I'd be able to finish this book after reading the first chapter, but I'm so glad I pushed through my discomfort. I loved how matter of fact Crayson was and how Nikkita seeks professional help getting past her trauma. The sex scenes were hot. There is some light BDSM but nothing too over the top.

Great storyline, bad grammar

This was a timely story that really made you think about some of the police brutality stuff from the cops perspective. It restored some of my faith in the men in blue. I've never had a real problem, but I have had some questionable stops with some poor excuses and attitudes from officers.

The book was hard for me to read at times because of the grammar issues and missing words.

I took me a while to warm up to Crayson, but i loved the storyline. There is always to sides to a story. And even if knowing the why is not gonna make what happend right , it might help you to let go of hate and resentment so you can carry in with your life. These topics are very touchy for a lot of us but i liked the way the author did not minimize the pain or stress we face as black people.

Overall i loved the book

Must

I enjoyed reading about crayson and nikita. The subject matter I can relate to because I was almost in the same position, and a friend of my was in that where the police put her on the ground and put a knee in her back and she was pregnant. She asking about her sister and they would not answer her but did that. Baby came out fine when it time. Thanks
