A planet full of vampires, a soldier from space, a girl named Weep, and one badass mech suit sent from a distant planet with a little kid for a president. What the hell is going on in this book? Find out as all five issues of this critically acclaimed mini-series are collected for the first time along with never-before-seen concepts and designs from Dylan Burnett, a cover gallery, and exclusive excerpts from the script. #DeathBeforeUndead
From what I understand this is Cates earlier work just republished under new brand. So while not as good as some of his recent work it's still pretty damn enjoyable.
So vampires have taken over earth. This is not good and so the president who looks like a 12 year old send a android like woman named Poli down to earth to kill them all. There she meets Weep, a little dude with a bad temper ready to fuck shit up. Together they escape the clutches of the vampires and fight back to win the planet back!
It's over the top and insane, like most of Donny Cates creator owned titles. The mission to take back the earth is pretty fun, and the characters are always good. I especially enjoyed Weep and the main vampire villain, who has some hysterical fucking lines. The art is solid and some great action set pieces. I did think it was a been drowned out by dialogue boxes, a little too much, and also some of the characters didn't work for me. I especially didn't like the president and Poli was just okay. I think the pacing had a few issues here.
It's always interesting to see older work from now big and upcoming artist/writers and how they grew. I think this is good but it's obvious Cates becomes even better the more he writes. This is still fun though, a 3 out of 5.
První a - vzhledem k Donnyho vytíženosti - asi i poslední book o válce mezi upíry a lidmi. Že to tu už bylo? Milionkrát? A něco z toho i ve vesmíru? Ok, dobře, originální to moc není.
(3,3 of 5 for sci-fi vampire dystopic action which is OK reading) Global warming wakes the hibernating vampires in a big way so humankind is forced to leave the planet in scorched ground manner. Some decades later it decides to check back on it. Graphically fitting, the theme and atmosphere it's fun but sometimes bit heavy on dialogues (or almost monologues). And I'm not excited about that. There are good ideas, fun moments and action sequences but I also found it chaotic and often boring/wordy. The result is that I enjoyed the comics with few dull parts and bumps along the way, but I do not value it much.
High concept and cool. I have very little doubt that this will be a movie in the future. It's a really fun, well written idea. The characters are great, the story is solid, I really liked it! The only bad thing is the art can be a little muddy and difficult to parse sometimes.
So in the 3rd millenia vampires rose up and humans had to flee to save their lives to another planet named Palus and they detonated earth while leaving. But then in future we see Palus being attacked by 2 vampires so fearing that vampires have developed space travel tech, the President sends Poli (agent) for reconaissance but when she goes to earth and finds there are human survivors - Weep (a girl) and her family, she teams up with them to take out Matilda, Queen of those lands and like rescue other survivors. Its an amazing book and with the over the top action, epic metal art, the suit, vampires and so much blood and gore, this book is just so much fun to read!
Not terrible, though it took awhile for the artwork to grow on me. Vampires have taken over the earth and sent a couple of scouting ships to Palus, the new homeworld of most of humanity. In response, the president, who looks like a child of about 10, sends a scout of his own, armored in a mobile tank suit, to see what's up. There are some glimmers of talent here, of things that will crop up in Cates' later work.
This is a crazy, sci-fi romp, adventure from Heavy Metal comics. It takes place in a far off future where humanity has been replaced by vampires all the humans having been moved off planet, or at least that's what the soldier protagonist of this story thinks until she runs into a young girl from earth who is a vampire hunter. And that's all I'm going to say about that story.
I went looking for something having read God Country, and I will say this, this is nothing like that.
Quite the contrary, where that story tried to be a story about fathers and sons this is a story about pure unadulterated adventure scifi. It doesn't bother going into too much detail and hits the ground running. Dropping you right into the action and very quickly showing the stakes and getting the action going almost none stop. It's really a lot of crazy fun. If you want something with depth this is not it. It is just a really fun adventurous romp full of curse words and heavy ordinance mech suit.
I will however, warn you it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger.
That said, the artwork wasn't anything in the spectrum of realism but rather very cartoony and considering the excessive violence and gore I think it fit the story well. I liked it. It shows a flair for style and it is beautiful. The coloring like most modern computer coloring is drab and dull. Sadly, I never see comics colored well anymore.
A good story if you like scifi and a little horror. Nothing mind bending but altogether very fun and a quick awesome read. Give it a shot. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I like that there's a sequel out there somewhere.

In the far future vampires have taken over the earth leaving humanity to escape to another planet. When two vampires show up on this new planet, a scout is sent back to earth where she finds out humanity is still alive. She teams up with some crazy girl to fight them. It's all fine. You can tell this is one of Donny Cates earlier works. It's just OK. There are some goofy things like a president who looks like he's 12, smoking cigars for some reason.
Average, predictable story and twist. I intercepted few illogical elements in the story. Things added to to pass pages and characters that ultimately I didn't care for. 3 state for the idea and the art. Minus 2 stars for the story.
