One Good Catch A Maguire's Corner novel Book 2 in the Maguire's Corner series
Ignoring a recent trauma that is affecting her everyday life, ER Doctor Kate Maguire engages in some high risk activities, but putting herself in these dangerous situations isn’t enough to feed her edginess. She needs something more. When her brother’s high school best friend comes back to town, it’s her chance for a ‘no strings attached’ fling with the man who still headlines in all her best dreams.
Rhys MacGrath’s days of one-night-stands are long over. The pro-football player might be side-lined at rehab for a shoulder injury, but that doesn’t mean he can’t admire and desire the all-grown-up, so-damn-hot, version of the tomboy he once knew. His sudden interest in Kate might be aggravating his best friend, who doesn’t approve, but it’s her indifference that’s driving Rhys crazy.
Everything heats up when Kate’s nosy nature sets her in the line of fire of an arsonist forcing them to deal with more than just the sparks igniting between them.
Included with your purchase of One Good Catch is a free short story, Before We Break.
Heather M. Gardner's love of books began on the hand-woven rugs of her small town library where her mother worked. There she had a never-ending supply of stories to read at her fingertips. As a teen, her favorite genres to curl up with were romance and mysteries. When she started to create her own stories, they were the perfect fit.
Heather resides in New York with her best friend, who is also her husband, plus her talented and handsome son. She is currently owned by one bitey rescue dog and two crazy rescue cats. Heather's a chocolate enthusiast, coffee junkie, pet addict, book hoarder, and fluent in sarcasm.
This romantic thriller was fast-paced and heart-pumping! It will keep you guessing to the end - looking forward to more excitement from Maguire's Corner!
So good! Kept me up way too late because I had to see how it ended! Kate and Rhys are intriguing characters. They both have serious issues in their past that are causing them difficulties in their present. I enjoyed watching them figure out their own issues and figure out how to help each other as they decided what to do with the powerful chemistry zinging between them. A great read!
Something is missing in Kate Maguire's life and she's trying to fill that hole with dangerous activities. Jumping out of a plane and speeding down the road on a motorcycle aren't enough. When Rhys MacGrath returns to town for rehab for a football injury, she hopes to dare have a fling with him. But Rhys wants more than that with Kate. When he starts to push for it, she grows more distant. He notices her risky behavior, wondering if it stems from her recent traumatic experience at the hands of a killer. Yet it's more than that Rhys should be worried about. There are more fires erupting in Maguire's Corner than the one between the two of them.
Another fantastic romantic suspense from Heather M. Gardner. I was hooked on the cozy little town of Maguire's Corner in the first book, and I was eager to come back for another tale. Kate and Rhys didn't disappoint! The action is fast-paced and the mystery looms over them. I immediately liked and sympathized with Kate. She's a smart and tough woman. She wants to do it all and doesn't want to let anyone know something is troubling her. She's the doctor, after all. Rhys is exactly what she needs. He won't back down even when she tries to wall herself off. The tension between them is sizzling.
Highly recommended for lovers of cozy mysteries, thrillers, and romance.
Mrs. Gardner's second book to take place in the cozy little town of Maguire's corner is a major part of the reason I've become a fan of reading local authors. I'm not typically a big romance reader but this is not you standard bodice ripper. The characters in this small town adventure feel like real people. When they crack jokes, you chuckle, when they go through a tough time you get the feels. This to me is the mark of a quality story.
Kate the main character is a smart, capable, flawed, and mildly traumatized woman in need. As Kate dives headfirst into high risk behavior, a local investigation, and a just back to town crush from her teenage years, you follow along grinning, laughing, getting puffy eyed, worrying, empathizing, and sometimes feeling a little heat.
You will also probably get hungry and want a good cup of coffee as Mrs. Gardner has a particular talent for culinary description. I wish my town had joints like "Crumbs" and "Mom's".
This story will hook you in right from the start. Make sure you don't have to be up early the next day. You won't be putting this one down till the dedication at the end.
I'll be keeping an eye out for more from Maguire's corner.
If you are new to Maguire's corner keep an eye out for "Already Home" the first book in the series. It's due to be re-released on Kindle in May.
This was a great read. Ms. Gardner has written a book with strong, interesting characters, especially Kate, There was just enough of a mystery under a romance plot to grab my attention with some surprises along the way. Ms. Gardner has a real feel for dialog among the family and friends who live in Maguire's Corner.
Love Rhys and Kate. They started their relationship slow but eventually things worked out. Love all the interaction with the family and the town. Love these small town books. Glad that the fire issue got resolved. Can't wait to read more about this town.
This is a solid 4-star read for me. Before I explain why I enjoyed it, let me briefly state why I didn't give it a higher rating.
What I'm beginning to see as a running theme in this series are problematic leading ladies. These main characters, these Maguire women, with all their brains, beauty, and charm, have the fatal flaw of being prone to damsel disease. They put themselves into the best positions to have their lives threatened at any moment. At least in this book, Kate, kind of had the excuse of PTSD to explain some of her choices. Still, there were times when she did non-life-threatening things that were emotionally damaging that made me very disappointed in her. Oddly enough, though, I liked her right from the start. Perhaps it was because I met her in the first book; Maggie didn't have that luxury in the first book. Still, as much as I liked Kate, she annoyed me at times, and I liked that. It made her seem more real.
The only other thing that kept me from giving this a higher rating was the over-the-top, god-like leading man. I'm not complaining about the wonderful visuals this character created in my mind, but he was just too perfect. Even with his crazily tragic (per genre standard) background, this guy was just too perfect. The perfect best friend, the perfect physique, injured and yet strong enough to recover early with hard work and determination, the perfect lover, the perfect bank account...
Even though these are the two reasons I didn't give the book a higher rating, they are also part of the reason I enjoyed the book. I like these two characters and I liked seeing them come together. I also love going back to Maguire's Corner and immersing myself more into this family and the town. The town is my second favorite character in the book. Still a big fan of Jack and was happy to see him doing his job again.
The steam level is pretty consistent with the first book and another staple of the series. While all very tasteful, I'm recommending this to adult readers only.
Recommended to adult fans of romantic suspense and mild crime dramas.
