Lesarius has no regrets about being the son of a love match. Sure everyone mocks his noble father for running off with a Sacoridian dancer, and then their sacrifice being for nothing when she died at sea. But Lesarius will change his family's fortunes. The castle is holding a Wedding Game in honor of the king seeking a husband. All high and lower nobles are invited to match among themselves and even Lesarius has an invitation. Aiming for the king is suicide, but Lesarius can still target a rich lord. All he needs are decent clothes and carriage to tempt one.
Armed with the dance his mother taught him and dressed in veils, Lesarius sells his body to a handsome merchant. Every day, the merchant's kisses and lovemaking weakens Lesarius's resolve. While gasping in the merchant's embrace, Lesarius is asked for his veil; the equivalent of a marriage proposal. Facing the same decision his father did, Lesarius chooses duty over love and abandons the merchant.
With pockets full of gold, Lesarius arrives at the castle. Doubt eats at him over his decision. With his father's blessing, he leaves the Game. Right after Lesarius withdraws, he lays eyes on the most dangerous prize, King Simon, and recognizes his passionate customer. As more handsome and richer rivals paw the king, Lesarius knows he has little chance of receiving another proposal. If Lesarius reveals his identity, he'll catch the ire of suitors who'll kill to be Consort. He was a coward once, but to be happy, Lesarius must summon the strength to be a fool like his father.
Sadly, another promising book that didn't quite meet my expectations. I thought it was a strong concept, somewhat interesting characters, and a promising setting, but there zero world building. The reader was thrown into the middle of this book with no explanation or context for the customs, different cultures, and society. It made me very confused and eventually disinterested, which is unfortunate because this author, under a different name, has written one of my all time favorite books. I had such high hopes, but was sadly left disappointed. I hope that futures books under this pen name are more fleshed out.
If you are looking for a quick read, with intrigue, yearning, and a happy ending this might be for you! Overall the vibe is cute with lots of humor spaced out despite the heart sickness that goes on. And I found myself wanting to know more about the characters. Unfortunately because it’s a shorter read and because the things I’m curious about would probably create another book I’ll just have to imagine what treasures are to be found by treasure hunters and what all 10 dances do and what other stories the dancers tell and what their country is like. (If more gets written in this world I would read it 😌)
It’s enjoyable m/m romance in generic fantasy world, but it could be so much better with redaction. If the non-native reader can tell something is wrong, then something is really wrong.
Creative, sexy, great writing, a dash of creepy terror (the sea monster in the night bit), humor and comedy of errors? Yes please. Two likeable MCs, as individuals and a couple. The disguised identity/will-the-King-figure-it-out shtick dragged on a bit too long IMHO, but that's the trope you're signing up for.
