A young woman has fallen from the top of the granite cliffs. Did she slip? Did she jump? Did someone push her? Because there is something special about how Nell sees the world, the police ask her to once again assist on the investigation. As she learns more about her skill, will Nell be able to use her perception to find the truth before danger threatens another person's life?

Catastrophe Cliff is Book #3 in A Seeing Colors Mystery series by J. A. Whiting.
Nell and Violet Finley, two sisters, live in the coastal town of Bluewater Cove, Massachusetts, and run their own art shop on Main Street. Violet makes jewelry and pottery items, while Nell draws, sketches, and paints pictures, such as landscapes, seascapes, and most recently, woodland fairyland scenes. Nell's paintings are different because there are so many more colors in them than ordinary paints would use. Nell is a tetrachromat, a rare individual who has four types of cones in her eyes, instead of the three types that most people have. Having this 4th type of cone enables her to see millions more colors and hues of colors than the normal person. A lot of people think Nell is an impressionist painter, but when asked she tells them that these are the colors she actually sees. She also has what some people might call a gift: she can see colors on certain people, colors that no one else can see. In the first book of this series, Nell saw a woman in her art shop that was drenched from head to toe in shades of red. When that woman left the shop, she was run over and killed by a hit-and-run driver. Each color represents different emotions and meanings, and some of those colors have multiple meanings; for example, red can mean anger, fear, death, love, or rebirth. The color yellow can mean happiness, evil, or deceit.
This book had only one typographical error/misuse of words in Chapter 3, page 23. The word "confidant" (which refers to a person) should have been "confident" (a feeling).
This third book is about a young woman in her 20s who is found at the bottom of a cliff that some people have nicknamed "Catastrophe Cliff"; the woman is barely alive, but dies a few hours later at the hospital. Was this an accident? A suicide? Or was it murder? Nell, Violet, Peter, and two smart dogs (especially Oscar), must find out what happened to this woman before Nell becomes the next victim. I had it figured out who the killer was pretty early on, but I didn't know the reason why that person killed her. I gave this book 5 stars and hope there will be more books in this series.
Sisters Nell and Violet Finley are out on a walk when they find a woman at the base of a cliff. An investigation ensues and Nell is asked to assist with her ability to see colors that others can't.
This is the third, and evidently final, book in the series and I did enjoy the read. The premise is original, and I loved Nell's ability and the way it evolved. This was a quick, fun story with a mystery that'll keep you on your toes. I did find a couple inconsistencies, and I don't think the book wrapped everything up as a final book. Otherwise, I do recommend both book and series.
I was hooked by the covers, I love colour and to play with colour. Almost envy Nell for her extra cone in her eye. This is a new take on a murder mystery and very likeable. No gore, foul language and no sex so it is a nice quiet read. I do find them to be a bit too tally though. Will be following this series.
I like this series more with each new book. Nell has great abilities. Joel and Violet seemed like a fun couple. I like Nell and Rob together. Oscar and Iris are great guardians for the sisters. Can’t wait to read what happens next time. Wonderful author. Each series is different with excellent and strong characters.
The plot and story line easy to follow. The characters are engaging fun and creative. The relationships of main characters are predictable. It’s a great series to read when you need a break from the more intense reading.
When a book is advertised as being a 'paranormal' mystery, it is often about witches, ghosts, science fiction etc. What if the word represented a normal person who had a birth enhancement such as being born with four cones in the eyes versus the 'normal' three? What exactly would this person see? Extra colors or even auras?
This series examines a person, Nell Finley who has this birth ability. What do you do with this talent? Well, Nell is an artist. She lives with her sister, Violet a jewelry maker and their two clever dogs. Still, Nell feels her abilities should help the community and so aides the local police.
This case involves an engaged couple, their friends, and family. The fiancee dies in a terrible fall in the state park. Nell 'sees' a possible homicide. As everyone begins sleuthing, Nell and Violet become targets of the killer.
This is a very creative series. Each book draws you further in to Nell's world. Yes, this is a paranormal mystery but so very possible and probable. Enjoy the experience.
Was it accidental, suicide or murder. Nell and Violet come across a body on a hike before work. Working with the police and their friends the two sisters are determined to discover the truth. I would have given this book five stars but editing errors drive me crazy and this had a lot of them.
This was another interesting cozy. The storyline keep me riveted and the characters were interesting. This book is recommended for those who love cozy mysteries.
This series is clever, well written, good plots, and engaging main characters. Each story involves an unusual situation and Nell's ability to see emotions as colors adds extra dimension to finding the solution. Short, cozy, fun read!
This series is one of my favorites that JA writes, because the scenery has to be written so visually for us to get what it must feel like when looking at people.
The young athlete had a bad fall on a hiking trail and too many folks had reason to wish her harm. Interesting suspects provide a taut tale until the colors, clues and scents finally come together in a very satisfyingly conclusion. Recommended
Imagine that you could see a million colors! And on top of that, you could see and interpret emotions. Love this new series and all J.A. Waiting books. Great yourself
