This book has a pretty unique and fascinating approach to running training. Nearly every other running training program is focused on your output: your pace, your power, your finish time, your miles or minutes run. This book is focused primarily on your input: your heart rate, day after day during your runs.
Following these programs for a little while I’ve seen definite improvements. And I’ve also found I can run for hours at a time with no muscle pain and nearly no recovery time afterward, which is completely unlike my experience with previous running programs. With that said, the program is fairly radical. Beginning it requires suspending disbelief as you will be running FAR slower than you would consider proper exercise, way slower than a so-called “easy” run. Following these programs required me to have a heart monitor strap/watch/earbud setup and then program a watch app with the routines, so it was a very techy sort of experience that many people I know would not be comfortable with. But so far I’m impressed by the approach. It’s sort of a Maffetone-like approach but with an actual program and some scientific backing behind it.

This is a tough book to rate and a tough one to review. I read it because I’m looking to improve my aerobic/cardiovascular endurance since I have a tendency to always be in the anaerobic zone when I do essentially any cardio.
2026 is going to be a big year for me for hiking, and I’d prefer not to be miserable when I’m trekking to Everest Base Camp or hiking along the Tour du Mont Blanc in the Alps. As it stands now, though, I kind of hate hiking.
At any rate, I gave this book 4 stars because the concepts were clear and they made sense to me physiologically. If, by following the recommendations this author made, I improve my ability to hike in zone 3 instead of always in zone 4 or 5, this book could open up untold opportunities for me to explore the world.
If, though, it doesn’t work, then it was a relatively dry read, without any true usefulness.
I am very much crossing my fingers for the former outcome.

Wonderful book to check out if you are going into a field of study that includes dealing with heart rates and more. Easy to follow.

Wanted more specifics into how to build better fitness in running. Talks too much about other sports other than running . Is a good book and I learned key points .
