Hunting for allies. A rescue mission that goes against the natural order. Time to delve deep.
Zeke and his friends have a final few obstacles standing in their way before they can try and find a way into the Hells. Everything to this point has been an effort to rescue their buddy, Balmur. One obstacle happens to be a mythical beast that might sooner eat than help them, but no big deal… right? Beyond that, all the group needs to do is find the hidden city of the High Elves and convince them to join their cause.
Searching and survival: if only it were that easy. Now there is active opposition to their goals of saving not only this world from War’s influence but Earth as well.
Will a hungry beast be picking its teeth with their bones? Even if they survive long enough to search for Balmur, the best case scenario is the team diving Into the Hells.
The adventure continues as Zeke and the crew make their final preparations to enter into the Hells and continue to get in War's way. I must say that I enjoyed all these books so much that I consumed all 3 books in less then a week. It is a continued adventure so the goals of the party are still the same from the first 2 books. In book 3 the group is still looking for a way into the hells and and to gain more levels to be able to survive there. The group think that finding a black dragon can help the cause, one way or the other. The group also goes to the High Elves capital and are not received very well as they meet up with an old foe causing problems for the group. Without to much stoilers, the group does find Balmur, their friend stuck in the Hells, but it is bittersweet as his time in the Hells has changed him a bit.
One of the greatest things about these books is how believable the characters are in a new world not their own. The details of how the characters are feeling home sick or how the stress of their situation is getting to them is realistic, even in a fantasy setting. Some of my favorite parts are the groups encounter with the High Elves and finally finding Balmur, which is so heartbreaking and so heart warming at the same time.
B.J. Harrison still does a passable job, but I feel that he can improve in some areas. I also am not a fan of how he changed May's voice in this book and the last; In the first book she spoke higher-than-thou but then softened up for Zeke, but in the later books Harrison makes her go back to the higher-than-thou all the time even when alone with Zeke. I guess that's a minor knit pick.
In some ways this book has to act as the end of a major phase of the series with them finally heading to the hells to rescue their friend Balmur, but at the same time it also works very well at setting things up for the next phase too, with the balance between the two working just right.
Given the stage of this series, this instalment would be a poor choice of starting point for anyone who is new to the series and I would highly recommend them opting for book one instead, since the series as a whole is a very enjoyable one.
The narrator's performance is again a good one with their delivery style especially suiting the personalities of the main characters, helping to enhance the listener's enjoyment of the book.
Overall, the series continues to go from strength to strength and I'm glad I don't have to wait for the next one in the series.
Awesome continuation of the series. Great split between action and info, especially when it comes to stats and skills info. What makes it so unique is the regular fourth-wall breaking that adds great humor and closeness. BJ Harrison was great as well. Had a moment of confusion voice-wise but other than that perfect. Can’t wait for the next one.
These books just keep ramping up better and better! None of the usual higher level drop off that normally sets into litrpg novels, just more story, levels and awesomeness!
The Team Is Back Together! Everyone is back together, stronger and closer than ever before. The characters are developing as is the story. I'm looking forward to more adventures in this world. I highly recommend this this series of books.
Feels a bit more rushed than the previous books. Lots going on, but right when I get into a scene that arc is over and onto the next. Still, worth a read and a good book over all, I just wish there was more of it.
Not exactly shocking given the title, or the plot in the first two books, but Zeke and company decide to go into hell. No, not for the fun of it - they've got a buddy to rescue and they're feeling ready. Things happen along the way, of course, and we get a better idea of who some of their enemies are.
Well these boys are at it again with their shenanigans to get stronger and Balmur, and save the world. All while looking amazing...my nervous about what comes next, just to kick it in the face too. The end of this book was a great moment for these guys, I mean they have scenes close to that every now and then, but really nothing quite like that for them yet, which was great to see.
I hate trying to write reviews because there are really only pass/fail results for me. Did I make it all the way through? Yes? 5 stars. No? There would be nothing here to read. In all fairness, if an author holds my attention from page one to the end, they’ve done their job. Anything less than 5 stars is petty criticism from someone incapable of even doing the job let alone doing a better one.
So in respect for the author and their work, I am going to start pasting this along with a generic review I found somewhere. “This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”
I was disappointed at the end of book 2 that they didn’t make it Into the Hells, as the characters kept talking about getting strong enough to rescue their friend. Book 3 goes there and beyond with stronger characters - and some interesting developments for the main character. I am sometimes put off by the heavy “bro” style of the characters, but they are all friends. As their characters develop some nuance, the bro stuff gets some context.
This series just continues to get better. As the author focuses more on the characters and their lives in this world, the story becomes more natural and relatable.
The "bromance sausage fest" of the first book is truly gone, and the story benefits tremendously from it.
Lots of things happen in this book and without getting into spoiler territory, I will just let it be known that it was very entertaining.
The third entry in this series is so far the best. The action scenes are fantastically fun and strike a great balance between traditional fantasy and high octane comic book or anime action. The character interactions are even deeper and more interesting and as usual the character growth aspect is just cool.
The series continues to be a fun read. I love the story beyond the LitRPG parts with Zeke and Mae, with overcoming losses, and solving mysteries during their journey. It’s nice to have some mature characters who make it through life with competence instead of “fate” or luck.
This is a well done conclusion to the story arc to rescue Balmur from hell. It also sets up the next arc, and I'm definitely looking forward to the next installment. Keep up the good work, my man!
I feel there are parts where the author forgot details from his other stories. Random abilities and items appear as well. And someone who was tortured seems to handle it well somehow
I am continually drawn back to these novels and Zeke’s class as well. I couldn’t put this book down and barely slept until I finished it. But hey, I like axes, shapeshifting and lycanthropes. And that’s just 1 party member.
This book is my favorite of the series I think. It has some great pacing, fun character interactions and dialogue that really brings the world to life. I can't wait for the next in the series and can only hope it's as good as this one.
Another great entry from Christopher Johns! Lots of action, skills, leveling, adventure, and a quest brought to completion. Looking forward to the next one!
