Oracle #1

I See Me

Rate this book
Length: 8 hours, 9 minutes
The day I turned nineteen, I expected to gain what little freedom I could within the restrictions of my bank account and the hallucinations that had haunted me for the last six years. I expected to drive away from a life that had been dictated by the tragedy of others and shaped by the care of strangers. I expected to be alone. Actually, I relished the idea of being alone. Instead, I found fear I thought I’d overcome. Uncertainty I thought I’d painstakingly planned away. And terror that was more real than anything I’d ever hallucinated before. I’d seen terrible, fantastical, and utterly impossible things … but not love. Not until I saw him.

OH EM GEE!! I love this one! It's set in the world with Jade, not just around Jade. You'll get to see her pop in, but it's got a different feel. I'm not quite sure how to describe it. It'll make your heart break and make you cheer all at the same time. Oh I'm definitely hooked!

So, Rochelle is an orphan, who is finally growing out of the foster care system. She has plans. To not ever be tied down by the foster care system again. She wants freedom and to not be looked at as a freak because they've labeled her psychotic. She doesn't know she's got a magical ability. NO, she thinks she's bat shit crazy and she is just trying to find a way to live her life without that stopping her. And then she meets Beau. Beau opens her eyes not only to herself but to a world she never knew existed right around her. She's a strong girl, but damn if I didn't wanna hug her and cry for her. She's had a rough go of it. And I am so glad she found Beau to make it more bearable.

Beau is fan-fricking-tastic. I love him. He's special and such a wonderful character to have in this story. I am totally love with him. Beau has fallen for Rochelle but he not only has to protect her from the bad guys but from herself too, all the while trying to help her understand what's happening around her.

We get to see Jade and Des and Candy, but we are also seeing that evil sorcerer who needs to die horribly. LOL I loved this. That they make an appearance in here. I am so hoping it continues like this. :) AND I loved the plot, and the way the story unfolds, and how it's mysterious while being a paranormal romance to top it off. I am looking forward to seeing what's gunna happen between Rochelle and Beau and how that little deal Rochelle made with you know who. I want MORE MORE MORE... Gimme please :) 5 BEASTLY PAWS!!!

This was wonderful. I'm following the reading order for the adept universe, so I've done the first 3 Dowser books, and now this one.

This book introduces us to Rochelle, a 19 year old orphan raised in the Canadian foster system. Her pregnant mother died in a car crash, but she was saved. At 13, her magic matured and she started having visions. Being in the human world, she knew nothing of magic or her lineage, so she was assumed by her caregivers to be psychotic, and put on meds. The poor girl has spent time institutionalized, trapped in particularly awful visions related to the end of the third book in the Dowser series.

In this book, she meets Beau, an equally alone, adrift shifter, and discovers that she's not crazy, she's an oracle.

The relationship between Rochelle and Beau is just lovely, particularly because my heart hurt from how deeply alone they both were, and so seeing them come together was so healing. And the story, as Rochelle discovers the magical world and comes to understand her own magic, was riveting.

And we get to see Jade, Desmond, Kandy, Audrey, Lara...and Blackwell and Hoyt. So that's fun.

Looks like I'm supposed to pivot back to the Doswer series now, so away we go...!

This was a pleasant surprise. Well not a surprise exactly - I've read and enjoyed a number of other books by Meghan Doidge, but I start a lot of books these days without rereading blurbs and with few expectations.

When I first started reading it I was a little disappointed that it ties into the Dowser series, not because I don't like it, (I do, and am up to book 3), but because my memory is shit and I had concerns I would feel lost, but there is enough information to help me dip my toes back into that stort without too much confusion. Bonus, tehus book fits perfectly between books 3 and 4 of that series. I feel a bit more prepared to jump back in because of this book.

FYI here is the reading order if you're interested. https://madebymeghan.ca/novels/
You definitely don't need to read the Dowser series to enjoy this one, though I'd recommend it because if you like this you'll like that. No regrets, lol!

There's a romantic aspect to this one that's enjoyable, but not so much you'd call the book a romance instead of fantasy. Some ha-cha-cha moments too, which aren't unwelcome.

It's also fun to watch the world of magic unfold before Rochellle's disbelieving eyes.

This really felt like an intro, I can feel there is a lot yet to be explored in future books, Rochelle learning about her abilities, meeting other magical beings, learning more about her family history.

And because you can't read a Meghan Ciana Doidge book without ending up craving something... yup, in this one it's apples (Rochelle) and cupcakes (Jade). I *barely* resisted the temptation to make apple muffins or cupcakes one evening I was reading this, and the lack of one ingredient is literally all that stopped me. It's a pleasant aspect of her books though, the vicarious indulgences. Which may or may not translate into our making them happen IRL.:-P

I’ll probably end up reading the rest of the series, because I’m invested enough, but I found this book ... pretty hurtful. It’s not the only book to use that awful “magic mistaken for mental illness” trope, but it’s the first time I’ve read one by an author I’ve otherwise liked. It’s like finding out your cool new friend is unexpectedly an asshole about something.

Why does it always have to be magic OR mental illness? Why can’t people who need mood stabilizers to function be witches? Why can’t people who suffer from hallucinations be seers? (“Pretty sure this is a legit vision, because my meds have been working and also my hallucinations tend to be voices telling me I suck.”)

Even small, throwaway lines highlight how unwelcome people with mental illnesses are. “My psychiatrist would have instantly diagnosed him with narcissistic personality disorder, but I don’t believe in beat, simple boxes.” Personality disorders are not simple diagnoses, and a responsible psychiatrist would not do something like that. And yeah, sure, that line is coming from the 19 year-old narrator ... but the narrative structure agrees with her.

And it’s just like ... I get that fat people like me aren’t allowed to exist in this magical world of sexy shapeshifters and badass witches and mystical dragons. But do you have to lock out people who are crazy like me too?

The more I think about it, the sadder it makes me feel. So I guess it’s time to stop thinking about it.

I purchased this one on Amazon for $3.99 on the premise that I love Meghan's work. This one completely lived up to that reputation.

Great personalities with solid characterisations and a well written story that keeps a decent pace, with the addition of new eclectic characters consistently introduced. This story fits in characters from her Dowser series, which are done with verve.

Wonderful.

3.5 to 4 Stars... A young woman lost to the tragedies of life and hardened by her experiences is finally of the age to be set free to live life as she chooses; the one problem that continues to plague her is the blindingly painful hallucinations believed by her to be a psychotic disorder... Attempting to manage these hallucinations through medication and her art, Rochelle is determined to live a normal life and absorb her new found freedom... When the illusions and reality merge, Rochelle's life will never be the same, and she must decide whether or not to trust her instincts and accept her new normal... Enter the mysterious but beautiful Beau who holds some answers but ignites many more questions... The connection between these two is instantaneous and electric forming a bond to rival the pending evil seeking Rochelle... As this story unwinds, the connection to the Dowser series becomes evident especially with the presence of some beloved and not so beloved characters including Jade, Desmond, Kandy, Blackwell, and Hoyt... The truth as to the exact nature of the hallucinations is revealed as is the nature of Rochelle and her place among the other Adepts... I felt the storyline and the connectedness with the Dowser characters was fascinating and intriguing; I was fully invested in the Adept world and the role of Rochelle in the destinies of these characters... My only drawback to the read was the insta - love between Rochelle and Beau; both of these characters were interesting and complex leaving me to wonder why the author did not explore more of a build up to the relationship allowing it to unfold naturally increasing the intensity and chemistry between the characters... As it is, it felt forced and somewhat superficial, however I enjoyed both characters and am eager to continue on this journey with them.:)

Probably would have enjoyed this more if I had read the dowser series 1st by the same author. It wasn't really necessary for the sake of the story, but it would've been nice to have had a background about some of the characters that were featured although they were only featured for a short time.

I like the setting quite a bit, I really like the fact that they were just traveling in an RV. I like both main characters, but didn't really like the Insta love, even though it was probably more understandable from the heroines point of view because she was so convinced that everything was just another hallucination.

I didn't really think there was much of a plot, the whole thing felt more like a big long introduction. And I did find that when it got to the scene that included characters from the other series, I was actually more interested in them than the characters in this story.

I stumbled across Meghan randomly and fell in love with her Dowser series. Her characters are believable, like-able and sarcastic! This book flows really well, it's an easy read and it has a great story. I particularly like the crossover between Oracle and Dowser. It was great reading a description and thinking "Oh! I know who that is!!" Great author!! Can't wait for the next book in both series'!!

While this is the first book of a new trilogy from Doidge, it is interwoven into the Dowser series with overlapping characters and plot lines. While it can be read as a stand alone, I recommend following Doidge's reading order posted with the book or on goodreads to get the full impact of the story.

Rochelle is aging out of the foster care system. On her 19th birthday, she follows through with carefully laid plans to take control of her life, having been in the system since birth. Her teen years have been complicated by her mental illness causing visions and blinding migraines, but she is determined to make her own way in the world away from social workers and group homes. She meets Beau during her first taste of freedom, and he helps her navigate an increasingly complex world that challenges all she previously knew about herself. With much more romance than the Dowser series (series from which this spins-off), Doidge writes an unexpected story with broader implications to the overall Adept world. I really enjoyed it, and appreciated the more romantic direction of the plot, but also wish it was a little better developed along character and plot lines.

Last time I read the first few books of the Dowser series I didn't include any of the series that she has written that intertwine with the Dowser series. But I want to read them all so I am going to be reading them in the order that the author says to read them in.

This book is so good. In this one Rochelle is an orphan who struggles with a mental illness, shes been in the system all her life. However, today is her 19th birthday which means she can leave her residential and she is classed as an adult. So in Rochelle's eyes she can finally start living her life.

However unknown to Rochelle she is actually an Oracle so her hallucinations are actually visions of the future. In this she meets Jade and the North American wolf pack as well as her beautiful Beau. The only problem is she doesn't believe that any of it is real. She thinks she's stuck in one of her hallucinations.

I love the relationship between Beau and Rochelle, it is utterly heartwarming.

Great start to a new series

I’m a huge fan or the Dowser series and was a little uncertain about starting in on a new one in the same universe (I’m reading the books in the author’s recommended order so between Dowser book 3 and 4.) Turns out my worries were wasted as I really enjoyed this book.

I loved the new spin on magic and revisiting old friends from the Dowser series. This series had a slightly darker feel to it and feels more New Adult than the Dowser series.

Long story short, I loved the book and can’t wait to read more in the series.

This book just ok for me. I wasn't sure what I expected when I started this book but I wish I liked this book more. I have not read anything else from this author I would give her a chance again. The book was very slow for me and I could not stay as interested as I wanted in this book. I feel it was lacking something for me.

The book, her others, was slow to start and quick to end...
But I’ll keep reading the series anyway! Enjoy!

😊

Brilliant book centered around a troubled girl/woman about to be released into the real world to only believe what she is seeing is all in her own hallucinations.
I really like this authors writing style and will carry on this series at some point 👌. Its flows real well with added mystery as to what is real and what is imagination. I'm still thinking hmmmm is it real? Or is it still all hallucinations if they were hallucinations in the first place. Top notch.

I am always happy to read a true love story.
It is rare that I will read an interlocking series but I didn't want to miss anything. I think the author"s writing has gotten better with each book- or I am just completely invested in the Adept Universe...no matter. The story seemed short but laid excellent groundwork for the new characters.

Hurry, Pinch Me! Is this book for real or am I dreaming it? I SEE ME by Meghan Ciana Doidge is the first novel in a companion series that parallel The Dowser Series. Do you need to read the Dowser series first? I highly recommend it! This is the world of the Adepts, magical creatures, shapeshifters, vampires and an evil sorcerer! We get to check in with our friends, Jade Godrey, (Our powerful cupcake making Dowser), Desmond (our hot swoon-worthy Alpha), Kandy (werewolf bodyguard) and some new magical characters.
Rochelle Saintpaul is an orphan and has been raised in the foster care system. She has been haunted by hallucinations for years that have led her to be very private and distrustful of people. No family wants to adopt a girl with mental problems. When she is in the gripes of a hallucination, she has learned to draw what she sees. These drawings usually center around a mysterious man wearing an amulet that have become best sellers on her Etsy site. A curly haired blonde in danger is now making appearances! Rochelle has aged out of the system and buys a 1975 Brave motorhome to have an adventure or maybe just escape her current life. She travels down to Washington State and this is when her world changes……..
After an intense “hallucination”, Rochelle ventures out of her safe motorhome to go to a diner. This is where she meets Beau, a man who will forever change her life. She doesn’t know it at the time, but Beau is a tiger shifter who is drawn to her magic! Wait, she is magical?? Yes, those hallucinations are really visions of the future. Rochelle is an Oracle and a powerful one too! The man she keeps on “seeing” in her visions is none other than our evil Sorcerer, Mot Blackwell. He tracks her down in the flesh, to add her to his “magical collection”. Rochelle seriously doesn’t know what is “real” anymore!
Beau saves her from Blackwell and they head down to “Pack Territory” in Portland Oregon, where you guess it, Desmond is the Alpha! Our gang from the Dowser Series, try to help Rochelle identify her powers and Jade even calls in one of the 9 Guardians! This is a fast paced novel that centers more on Rochelle and her hidden heritage and her growing love for Beau, her shifter! Problems come when Rochelle sees something that she doesn’t want to happen. You know what happens when people try to change fate! Bad things happen! Rochelle will make a deal with the devil to prevent her vision from happening! I can’t wait to read more adventures with Rochelle, our tattooed Oracle! How will she be able to help our Adept community? Those will be some very entertaining adventures! Enjoy!

Welcome again into the world of the Dowser, but this is not the Dowser series. Yes, our friends Jade, Desmond and Kandy make an appearance, but I See Me is it's own series set in the same world and it was fantastic! I cannot express how much fun I had with this book without giving away too much information regarding the story.

Our main gal, Rochelle, has lived her whole like with a mental illness and hallucinations. She has learned to live with then through medication and her drawing, but what if these hallucinations are something more? What if she is seeing things that are to eventually happen? Wait? What? You're saying she can see the future? That is even crazier then Rochelle already thinks she is. But we soon learn, with the help of sexy stranger, Beau, that things aren't always what they seem.

We are introduced to various new characters and old and given a nice chance to get to know them each a bit better through Ms Doidge's description and dialogue. The setting, while in the same world as the Dowser series has a slightly different feel because, at the moment, Jade, doesn't realize what is up with her. She has no clue that there are supernatural forces/beings in the world. So the feel of I See Me is definitely different, but so enjoyable.

I See Me is filled with so much fun and entertainment. Not to mention SEX, oh wait, I mentioned it, well there is sex and it's juicy and sweet and sensual. No, this is not erotica, but the scenes are pretty graphic and may leave you slightly breathless, so word of warning if reading while sitting in the living room with your family during the holidays. This is a definite must read in my opinion, I love the combination real world/supernatural world with a bit of romance to add some zest.

Oh and there are cupcakes....YAY for cupcakes!

So I bought this by accident, thinking it was book 4 of the dowser series, and was really miffed when I realized it wasn't. I decided I wasn't going to like it, and waited a really long time to read it.

Big mistake.

I actually like this better than books 2 or 3 of the original dowser trilogy; Jade was getting really annoying (a la Charlie in the Darynda Jones series: quirky is fine, but easily tips into "annoying enough to disrupt the flow"). In this book, at least, Rochelle isn't like that, and doesn't seem to have any quirks that will become that.

This can definitely stand alone, for those who haven't read the dowser books. I've forgotten most of the details of them, and despite the contents of Rochelle's hallucinations, it didn't matter at all.

I'm looking forward to seeing where this series goes.

Wow..when I read all the reviews I was expecting something good. This was just plain awful. It started out with promise, and then went steadily downhill. A loner who suffers from hallucinations jumps into bed with the first good looking dude she runs into after aging out of the foster system. She is suddenly and inexplicably in love. Then the whole magic stuff came in, and to say I was confused by cupcakes and werewolves and seers...well, it didn't make a whole lot of sense. There was also a TON of repetition...even after a page or two so I had to leaf back and forth to see if I had already read the part and had lost my place...nope...it was a repetition....Maybe this is suited to a young romantic girl, but I was annoyed by the love story and the rest of the story didn't carry it enough to make me want to read another.

You see, I've got this problem. When I find a blurb I really like, I tend to be like: "Omg, I love this trope! Sounds fun! Want to read!"
And in such rare occasions I don't even scroll down to the Q&A section. Had I done that, I'd have noticed some questions, such as "Do I need to read the previous series before that".
You see where I'm going?

Technically, the Oracle series is a standalone. Technically. Even the author says you can read it before having read the other series, Dowser, just beware, 'cause spoilers. Duh. Don't care. I wanted to read this book so bad, I continued on.
And practically yes, it works for the first half. In the second half however you miss half of what's going on. Not that that part appears to be important for this book, but you still miss a lot. Frankly, I wished I had read the previous series, Dowser. As it was, I felt like I missed all the meaning and actions of the new characters, simply because I wasn't patient enough to start with the origin first.

So for me, this book consists of two books: The first half for new-readers and old-readers, the second for readers of the Dowser series. You can still finish the book, but I doubt it's as satisfying as it would have been with a proper start.
Pity, really, because Rochelle was a really interesting character, and while the insta-love between her and Beau is only acceptable under the -it's magic, duh-label, I liked the two together. They had something. I liked how Rochelle interacted with others, how she was handling the news of her gift, how she had plans and was just a bit antisocial. I like my rebellious girl to be a tad antisocial :)

To put it simple: Rochelle had depth. She loved apple juice, disliked soda, is obsessed with strange RVs (absolutely loved the idea of her getting a RV and simply driving everywhere, it was so perfect for her!) and has her own head. Beau we are still getting to know, but the cookie-monster is simply endearing. And then the other cast of characters comes. Some are fine - others pop up with minimal explanation. So much for "standalone", "don't need to read the other series" - well obviously I didn't have to. I just really wish I had. It would have made this book so, so much better.

And as usual with oracle/seer stories - don't get spoiled and wonder for yourself whether her visions are avoidable or not ;) That's half the fun!

So, my advice: Don't be like me, actually read the other series first.

I See Me is book 1 of the Oracle Series and book 4 of the Dowser world by Meghan Ciana Doidge. While the Dowser series sits firmly on the Urban Fantasy bookshelf, I See Me is very much a New Adult Fantasy. The story opens on Rochelle’s 19th birthday with her getting yet another tattoo and launching. Rochelle is a fascinating and troubled character and her backstory is thoroughly explored. The character build up is interesting but so lengthy that I began to crave some action.
When the action arrived, it was bedroom action which was unexpected because there hasn’t been more than wishful make outs in the Dowser series thus far. Desperation drives Rochelle to go from 0 to 100 in a very short time but the love story is quite sweet and we are given a number of pages of it. Again I was getting antsy. Then in the upper 80s, the sh*t gets real, except for our poor heroine to whom it is all unreal. Rochelle believes that she is having a psychotic breakdown and that nothing is real. The big confrontation/reveal/fight scene was utterly delightful!. It was very memorable and well worth the wait.
Rochelle and her now boyfriend, Beau, seek help from the nearest were-pack. Of course, this is the pack from Dowser stories, so all the characters are familiar. The weres don’t know what to think of the new arrivals. Beau and Rochelle are willing to go to extreme lengths to protect each other.
Ultimately, I enjoyed this book as an installment of the Dowser series. A lot of things were set into motion that will find fulfillment in some later book. This whole book felt like a set up for some story to come. However, I don’t think I would continue reading the Oracle series if it were a stand alone series. There just wasn’t enough action and no time was spent developing the characters beyond Rochelle and Beau. It was just assumed that you knew them. So my recommendation is to read this only if you are into the whole Dowser world.

Wow, what an interesting spin on the series I am now completely addicted to! I’m sure you can probably start here, but having enjoyed the Dowser series so much (and being an insane person who has to read things in order and complete everything), I picked this up after book 3.

We meet Rochelle in this book, an orphan who believes herself crazy. It might have something to do with the fact that everyone around her has been telling her she has a mental problem since she first exhibited signs. Those signs? Seeing visions and then sketching them obsessively afterwards, almost uncontrollably. She’s been kicked around the system a bit, but nothing can get her down, especially now that she’s a legally independent person. Things should get easier, but they take a very strange twist, starting with her mother’s strange necklace and only continuing on when she meets Beau at a rest stop diner.

These two were absolutely great for one another. Beau may be exhibiting signs of his own, if you’re familiar with the other types of people in this universe. This book, to differentiate from the other series, gives you all the smutty goodness that poor Jade misses out on. Maybe we’ll get there eventually. For now, this was a nice change. These two young kids are smitten. If only they didn’t have to worry about visions or packs or magic at all, they could be two lovers on the road to wherever. Unfortunately, there is a lot of magic and mayhem to deal with first. They sadly come in the shape of a familiar big bad. There’s a bunch of hurtles to jump, but we get to leave these new characters in better shape than when we met them. I can’t wait to see where this all heads in the next few books.

I was a little leery starting another series in the midst of reading the Dowser series, even though it was the recommended reading order, because I was really caught up in Jade's world. However, I have to admit that this ties in nicely. Yes, the style is a little different and it read different which I was impressed with. Rochelle and Jade came across as 2 distinct people while narrating their stories.

Rochelle is an orphan who having turned 19 recently, decided that she is ready to head out into the world. Using the money she made selling her drawings of dreams or her "hallucinations" as she calls them, she buys a Winnebago and sets out to cross the border from Canada to the US. Along the way she meets Beau, unbeknownst to her, a tiger shifter. When accosted by Blackwell and Hoyt in a diner, Beau makes the decision to take Rochelle to Desmond and his pack for protection. While there, Rochelle learns very quickly that her hallucinations are not figments of her imagination, but something completely mind-boggling. Magic, vampires, shifters, sorcerers and Jade. jade, whom she has been dreaming about for over a year is real. As is Blackwell.

I adored Beau and loved the fact that we got to see some of our favorite characters again. Kandy and Kett are still at the top of my list, but I have to admit, I'm adding Beau to the list after this story. I may not like the idea of how this ended with Blackwell and Rochelle, especially given that she sees alot of what Jade does which could benefit Blackwell, but the story did tie in nicely and introduced us to new allies for Jade. Jade, who definitely does not want to know her future, even if it may help her at times.

Great Series. Started the 1st on December 9th, then went into a binged all the others and today I start Unleashing Echoes.

1st reason - I've enjoyed this series is I really like the main characters and their friends. I've found for me, if I don't like the people I'm reading about I don't enjoy the story. Your characters are complex with flaws but they care and they are trying to do what's right, which is not always easy.

Plus each Main character saw the world through their experiences. The idea that Jade and Rochelle see Blackwell differently because they have interacted with him differently is great and definitely, for me, gave them life.

2nd reason - Story. The story in each book kept my interest from beginning to end and the humor found was refreshing and, while I don't care about sex in a story, you didn't make the sex more important than the story so it did a good job of enhancing both the story and characters.

An absolutely intriguing delightful read!

This was my first time reading Meghan Ciana Doidge’s work but it definitely won’t be my last as I absolutely loved this story! And while yes, I may have been a tad thrown into the story line of her other series, it’s still absolutely amazing to read even as a stand-alone! And now I can’t wait to go back and start the rest of the Adept series! Because man, this one totally captured my attention!

Rochelle and Beau’s connection was utter perfection and I absolutely loved the entire story arc with Rochelle and how she slowly learned to trust what was around her and opened up to Beau and all the possibilities. The going ons with Jade, Desmond and Blackwell may be more detailed in the other series but in this one was definitely captivating and makes me want more of their story as well.

Definitely a must read for anyone that likes a ride on the paranormal side!
