When petty criminal Callum Benson awakes bound to a chair and staring down the business end of a .38 revolver he knows he's out of his depth. The five masked men have one simple demand. Break into a target's house and kill him within 24 hours or face the consequences. Alone and with the clock ticking Callum has no choice but to enter the maelstrom as everything he holds dear borders on the very edges of insanity. They say a man's home is his castle, but for some it is something more. Something Callum will wish he had never entered.
This was an engaging and entertaining read with some great twisty plot moments tossed in that I really liked.
I won't go into the blurb but in a nutshell we have a second-rate criminal - Callum who finds himself in one heck of an unusual predicament. I'd say sometimes karma is a bitch in his case.
You won't predict where the plot takes you so just settle in for the ride.Every time I thought "I bet this happens next.." it simply didn't. Stuart Brogan kept me on my toes and I felt the full efforts of his imagination.
Callum's situation is not a pleasant one and he's got to keep all of his wits about him. There are dark themes and I wouldn't so much as classify this as horror but a dark thriller, nice touch of crime thrown in so this would appeal to a broad audience.
The action increases, the plot throws up some uncomfortable scenarios and it didn't falter. My only reason for not giving this 5 stars is that I felt it could have tipped a little further over on the dark/graphic side to really add some memorable moments. Or am I just a seasoned lover of all things dark and scary?
A solid 4 stars for Scallywag and I particularly enjoyed the ending. A solid novella that you'll find keeps you entertained all the way through. What more could you want?
I received a copy of this book to review. All opinions are entirely my own and totally unbiased.
Harry Davant made a poor decision taking the alley shortcut in the rain. Two-bit criminal Callum Benson saw the old man's choice as an opportunity, but what happens next surprises everybody, including this reader.
To tell you more would be to give too much away. It's best if the readers get to discover all of the twists and turns for themselves. I will say this Scallywag is a joyride filled with real characters and believable situations. Stuart R. Brogan is a master at raising a reader's blood pressure.
If you've already read Stuart's debut novel Jackals and you're looking for another quick fix of his fast-paced, high-energy, writing style, you should pick up Scallywag right away. BTW, if you haven't read Jackals, do yourself a favor and pick it up today. It's the best debut horror novel I've read this year.
As for Scallywag, it's a wild and twisted ride which I whole-heartedly recommend.
Scallywag is published by Midgard Books and is available in both paperback and e-book formats. If you subscribe to Kindle Unlimited you can read it at no additional charge. Also, if you are an Amazon Prime member you can read it for FREE using the Kindle Owners Lending Library.
From the author's bio - Stuart R. Brogan is a former nightclub bouncer and proud Heathen who loves nothing more than expanding people's minds with Pagan related Non-Fiction or blowing people's brains out with fast-paced, gut-wrenching Horror and Thrillers.
Stuart currently resides in Glastonbury, UK with his long-suffering wife and man-eating Shih-Poo dog "Poppy" where he co-owns a kick-ass Viking/Asatru shop, fiercely named "Shield Maiden."
This is the first time I've read this author and it definitely won't be the last. The story is full of twists and turns and has a very engaging plot. The tale is about Callum Benson who is a small-time criminal who gets involved in the big time let's just say things don't go according to plan but this is such an awesome story.
