A man with a one last wish. An adventure with an unusual twist. A triumph of the human spirit. When sixty-year-old Tom Jenkins is diagnosed with terminal acute leukemia, he hopes for a miracle, but the effects of countless blood transfusions are no longer working. His time on this earth is coming to an end. A widower of a few years Tom refuses to wallow in self pity. Determined to die standing up, Tom decides to run his own marathon through his hometown, knowing full-well that it may kill him. Tom Jenkins is living on borrowed time, and he knows it. There isn't anymore time to waste. He's determined to spend what time he has left doing something he's never done before - run a marathon. 26.2 miles would be an extraordinary feat for anyone, but for Tom, it means the difference between going out flat on his back or leaving a legacy a lasting legacy behind. Along the way, he meets reconnects with quirky characters, the unlikeliest of companions, and learns valuable lessons about what it is to dream, love, play and embrace the complexities of a life well-lived. Can he reach his goal before it's too late?
Well it's not fine literature and you might call it a little amateurish, but it is an admirable, if possible, goal in a way to end your life. It all takes place in one day, even the heroes daughter falls in love with her adversarial opponent in a day. So take it for an adequate story with a man's spirit to die his way winning out. The editing needs work as quite a few missing words, but not too distracting. I might give this author another read if I come across more of his work.
This is a great book. I just read it in one sitting. And I loved it. Never read another. Book like it. I went from happy to sad and from laughing to crying. Loved all the characters....well all but one. I highly reccommend this book!!!
Its always hard to read a story when you know the ending will not be good for a character you grow to like. I appreciate the themes of faith, always moving time, and love shared in the story. Sweet.
I totally enjoy this book, couldn't put it down! It makes me laugh, shed a couple teardrops. And also reminded me that life is fleeting and every moment is worth living. This is a keeper! Well written kudos to Greg Sheehan you are a great story teller. Keep writing, you are gifted!
Loved this book. It portraits the need of each of us to settle our affairs in our own way, say those last words to friends and neighbors before our leaving this earth. Funny and sad at the same time.
This was a wonderful, sad, fulfilling book! It made me cry and laugh from beginning to end. I loved all of the characters. Tom was set to finish his marathon while running through his past in his own town. Loved it.
I could have rated this book much lower because the writing and editing are poor: grammar, cliches and word choice. But the storyline was interesting and engaging.
With terminal cancer raging through his body, Tom decided to leave the hospital and walk a marathon. Each chapter marks a mile of his journey. Good story.
