A Winter Hope

Rate this book
For fans of Katie Flynn and Dilly Court, A Winter Hope is a heart-warming festive novel from the Queen of family saga, and author of The Winter Baby and The Nursemaid's Secret, Sheila Newberry.

All they want for Christmas is a new home.

Number five Kitchener Avenue heralds the start of a new life for the Hope family. For pregnant Miriam it is a warm, safe environment to bring up her child. For her sister, fourteen-year-old Barbara, it means independence . . . and boys. And for Fred it provides the security he craves for his young family.

In the lead up to Christmas, the Hopes settle in, and start to make happy memories in their new home. But World War II is round the corner, and this carefree life can't last.

Soon the family are split up. Bar, wanting to do her bit for the war effort, joins the ATS, while Miriam and her children are evacuated to the countryside and away from her husband.

As the country is thrown into turmoil, can the Hope family come back together and find the happiness they crave?

'A Winter Hope is a heartwarming novel following two sisters from pre-war to post-war, their parallel stories filled with love and loss. I found myself completely wrapped up with their experiences and shed a tear at the twists and turns of their lives.' Mollie Walton, author of The Daughters of Ironbridge

'I have long been a fan of Sheila Newberry's novels. I love their wonderful warmth and charm.' Maureen Lee, bestselling author of The Seven Streets of Liverpool

'Reading a Sheila Newberry book is like having dinner with your mother in her warm and cosy kitchen. You can feel the love and care put into every juicy morsel' - Diane Allen, bestselling author of For the Sake of Her Family

Number 5 Kitchener Avenue is the home of thr Hope family. Miriam is pregnant and married to Fred. Miriam 's fourteen year old sister, Barbara lives with them. Christmas is approaching and so is the Worls War II. Barbara joins the ATS. Miriam and her children are evacuated to the country.

This story tells of the Hope family (and thousands of other families) coped through this horrific event. Families were split up. Men were expected to join up and women were expected to step up and and do the jobs the men left behind. The story is told in graphic detail. This is an emotional read and believable story. The characters are true to life and well rounded. This is the first book that I've read y the author, but it wont be my last.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Bonnier Books UK and the author Sheila Newberry for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

A saga type story set before, during and after world war two.
After a short while I realized that I had read this book before, it was probably quite a few years ago, it was originally published under the title The family at number five.

Another sweet family saga by Sheila Newberry, I just love everything she writes.
“And she regarded him with love.” Isn’t that just the perfect way to end this beautiful story? Every line of Sheila’s books is perfect ❤️

I absolutely loved the feel of this book, and so much happened throughout, it felt like several books rolled into one! Very eventful and engrossing, I loved delving into this story and it encompassed so many of the war years too and had a feel for the period. I also thought it was great that the book was split up into time periods and even included pre-war and post-war periods too which I don’t find many books doing!

It was great getting to know the characters and seeing how they evolved over time. Following their lives and stories was wonderful, and it was great getting to read children growing up and families expanding throughout the book. They were also plenty of insightful details, facts and knowledge about the war within and the importance of certain dates too. This book had so much!

Definitely glad I picked this one up and gave it a read!

I love books set amongst the war years. The Hope Family have a lovely family life. Miriam is bringing up her new baby, and looking after her teenage sister. When war breaks out their lives change. We follow their evacuation and the friendships made amongst life's struggles. There are sad times and times for celebration. Bar has a few struggles and heartbreak along the way.
You feel a part of the family with their different experiences of the war.

An unusual style and turn of phrase in this novel, The Hope family are coping with life during WW2. It makes you glad that you were born after the war and not before or during it. Some excellent graphic detail of the era and the predicament and historical facts of the war. Likeable characters. A mix of jolly times and tragedy. Thank you to NetGalley and Bonnier Zaffre.

This book should have kept it's originally released title of "The Family at Number 5" It's a more suitable title!!! The title of "A Winter Hope" and "all they want for Christmas is a new home" is misleading. I thought it would be a Christmas book but it turned out to be family world war 2 saga. Little to no plot, just bla bla bla about the family and kids growing up.

SPOILER ALERT!
The author excuses Fred kissing his wife's sister. This is not an acceptable behaviour. The little conflict at the end about Bar not wanting to tell Peter she is pregnant was a bit pathetic. Waste of my time. Finished the book but would not read it again. If you like world war 2 and family sagas and boring plots, read it.

I found this book difficult to get into in the first chapters, it wasn’t my usual page turner , I kept having to repeat the story several times and it just felt a bit disjointed but I carried on to the end, but I did enjoy the last chapters when reading about the Second World War and different family members having to join up, injuries to some and worries for others, New life beginning and heartache
But all family members pulled together

At first I wasn't sure I would get into this book. I found it a little slow to get going and I struggled a bit with the writing style. However, I'm glad I stuck with it as it turned out to be a decent story. I have read a lot of books in this genre and I must be honest and say that it's not in the top half of my list but still enjoyable all the same.

Even though I did enjoy the story, I found it hard to follow. It was written in first person, third person and sometimes I even think second person views. Who was telling the story?

I loved it. I thought it might be a bit tame, but no the characters drew me in and I was hooked. It was very sad in parts for Bar and the family but had a good ending. I really liked Bar, she had such guts and courage. Times were really tough during the war with a constant fear of bombs and of being evacuated.

I could empathise with the situation somewhat, as my husband was evacuated to Lancashire when he was 2 years old when his house in London took a direct hit. How awful that must have been and Sheila describes it all so well.

I wi ll read more of her books.

Thank you for my ARC copy, I am really grateful for this

World War 2 saga about the experiences of one family and their friends. An enjoyable read, particularly for anyone interested in this period as a great deal of the war is covered. I would have preferred more detail myself, but this has not diminished my enjoyment of the story.
