From the best selling author of BUT HAVE NOT LOVE and BORN A COLORED GIRL comes a most scandalous tale, often upsetting and disturbing. During the slavery years, young, beautiful slave girls were sold to schools where they were taught to be perfect mistresses of rich, white, Southern gentlemen. This is the story of one young girl's struggle to remain true to herself.
I thought this was the worse book I’ve read so far but I think “Fancy” by Michael Edwin Q. Has lower the bar of bad in ways that Brautigan never did. So why do I hate thee let me count the reasons. One your writing about the antebellum South but the way you describe it is strange to say the least, So like on “God’s Plantation” brother Theodore, continues the theme that flows throughout this story one of older man lying about himself and trying to rub up and take advantage of Fancy but she is too connected to God’s spirit to be polluted by the sins of the flesh.” Remember we are suppose to be talking about slavery and the old South, does it make sense to you yet because it doesn’t get any better. I mean really who writes a book about slavery and it comes out like this,...”““They took my wallet. What does it matter? There couldn’t have been more than one hundred dollars in it.” A person has to be very wealthy to dismiss one hundred dollars so easily. “Do you recognize me?” Jolene asked. “Why, do I know you? You look familiar.” “I was at the card game, just now; I was the one serving the drinks and food.” “Oh, was that you? Sad, about Graham, it was a bad deal, all the way around.” “My name is Jolene Fairchild.” “I’m Derwood Sullivan. My friends call me Sully. You may call me Sully.” “Can I walk you home, Sully?” “If you like, it’s not far ahead.” So did it sound to you like a young teenage slave girl speaking to a older White Man who had just been beaten and left robbed in the street? It just doesn’t sound like that is how the conversation would go but hey artistic license go ahead and gaslight the entire history of slavery it was just a failure of morals or at least all the greeting card religious homilies that fancy keeps attesting too,...”Jolene prayed in her mind, “Oh Lord, is this the fate of your children who try to do what’s right?” Then a wave of shame washed over her. “Oh Lord, forgive me. Teach me to be humble and grateful to appreciate all the blessings heaven allows.” This goes on every chapter religious whitewashing of racism and sexism and ridiculousness in plot and dialogue this was worse than someone who doesn’t know how to write, although the writing was unimaginative and more typing than what I would call writing, still Edwin Q. Has written a number of books all dealing with black women in historical slave settings, I wonder if Mr Q is a white man who probably relates to all these males he describes in more ways than one. Sorry I normally don’t get that personal but then I usually don’t read such a terrible book. You wasted my time and I won’t make another mistake like reading another of your books and take this as a warning your experience may not be as negative as mine but by any measure this book is below average
The storyline dragged on for too long!! It was okay but I won’t recommend this book to unseasoned readers. I feel like I have read a story like this before.
I often felt as though I was reading a rough draft of a good book. It was very skin and bones, with no description of any characters, surroundings, atmosphere... The most irritating part, the misspellings. Accept, except, road, rode, etc. Example: The only constellation I have is knowing how much you’ve suffered....consolation, perhaps?! I stumble over such things and it's hard to follow.
This book is riddled with violence beyond the necessary. Also it is written for dramatic and ludicrous effect. The grammatical errors and spelling errors are only outnumbered by the incorrect usage of many, many words and their proper tense. Poor quality proof reading....seemingly from a non English speaking source. Irritating read.
I enjoyed this book very much. Very suspenseful not knowing what would happen next. Sad, hard to read but I knew parts were very real. Recommend this book.
I’m not sure how I was able to finish this novel. It was so unbelievable and far fetched. I gave it a star on the basis that I finished the book. But this took fiction to a whole different level. Just no.
The most poorly written book I've ever read. I kept reading to see if it would get any better. It seemed as if the author had a nightmare and got up and hurriedly jotted it down throwing a story together before he forgot it. It was full of misspellings, short choppy sentences and phrases used as sentences; commas were stuck in randomly. It seemed about fourth grade level grammatically. It reminded me of the children's story The Old Woman and Her Pig. The same thing happens over and over again. Jolene trusts someone and they hurt her again. Then she miraculously keeps running into people at every turn who facilitate her next rescue which then ultimately turns into her next delimma. People from her past pop up too conveniently. These constantly repeated situations are overkill. The only reason I gave it two stars is the effort the writer made to make it a story of faith. But then the story becomes so perverted that it's not believable and very evil. No effort was made to use dialect common to the era. Modern day language and ideals were used instead of sticking to the time period. After all these horrible near death experiences, the book finally had a sudden happy ending. But who knows? If it went a few more pages, the author could no doubt find a way to take this hope away too. The story had potential but was just too unbelievable and carelessly written.
This book was obviously written by a white man who is aroused by black suffering. It's about a 13 year old black child who is repeatedly lusted after, tortured and even raped by adult men and women. The book jumps all around. The characters who matter don't have much of a description and the ones that don't matter have great descriptions. This must be some kind of slave/torture fetish book. Plus there are so.many white nights. This book is stupid, disgusting and just plain horrible. I want MT money back .
What I like most about Michael Q books are each can stand on it's own. He gives enough background that they can be read in any order. "Fancy" is a bit more disturbing than most of the others of his I have read. Some of the perversion are a bit shocking. This book will truly hold the readers attention and remain in their memory.
I truly love this journey taken by Jolene. At times I thought all was lost. you will enjoy this book it will keep your imagination open, what you think will happened well read and find out. Enjoy
Not a bad beginning that could have developped into a nice story with real historic background but here after a while storyline just gets worse and worse.. highly unbelievable characters and events that just don't add up ..
I wasn't ready for how much Jolene was going to have to fight I this book. The story was so action packed it was lofty at times. There was enough rape and sexual assault that i needed to take breaks in reading. All in all it was a decent book.
Good reading if you like historical fiction this book is alive with the smells and sights of old New Orleans. Gives you a good picture of the times of slavery. Just when you think the character is going to have another adventure it ends.
This book was not good at all. The main character was one dimensional and uninteresting. The plot was non-existent and unbelievable. Ther misspellings if words was distracting. Don’t waste your time.
Actually some of the stories were just too unreal, though it kept me reading! The rule in this book is Trust the Lord in all things. Romans 8:18 our suffering ends in our glory!
There were too many twist and turns for one book. Everything was very coincidental and unbelievable. After all the turmoil, out of nowhere everything just stops. This was an ok read.
One of the worst books I've ever read. It is a hodgepodge of worst case scenarios with no depth of characters. Written as though the author had very little time to finish, like a pop quiz.
This book was very hard to finish. I wanted to quit many times. I dragged on way too long. There was too much going on. Kind of back and forth. I found many spelling and grammatical errors. I’m sorry but this is not a book I would recommend.
