Laurel Benson is a loyal and dedicated nurse. She may be petite, but she’ll take on anyone who threatens her patients’ safety and well-being. That feisty protectiveness creates problems when a hit and run victim lands in the ER and Police Detective Cade Resnick arrives to investigate.
There’s no denying the sparks between these two, but their professions put them at odds. As Cade zeroes in on his suspect, Laurel won’t make it easy for him, not while the suspect is under her care. More than once, these two clash when Cade’s quest for justice collides with Laurel’s concern for her patients.

I found this book not very long ago and decided to start it because it sounded like something different, and it was. I haven't read a cozy yet with a nurse as the main sleuth. I know there are some, but I just haven't enjoyed them yet. ;) Anyway, I loved that the author didn't waste time getting Laurel and Cade together, but it's not a super easy together, because her differences with him usually end up in a little verbal sparring. They did always seem to make up. The scene where she made him act like someone getting treated for a cut in the ER as an undercover act was pretty funny.
As far as the murder, I had an idea that I knew who did it, but I definitely hadn't guessed the why of it. The showdown was pretty exciting, and both Cade and Laurel had a good part in it. I'm definitely interested in reading more of this series whenever the author releases another of the mysteries.
I love reading books set in Texas, but I didn’t get very far into chapter two when I gave up because the author decided to police what a woman wears based on her weight and describe an overweight person as a behemoth. I have the passages in my highlights if you want to see them.
No thanks.
I got this book for free from Freebooksy. It wasn’t worth it.
A great book. Laurel and Cade are great strong characters and the chemistry songs. The book is both a romance and a mystery. The plot was strong and was well developed.
As long as the gynaecologist leaves him alone - he's fine
A good read. I was a bit sceptical as normally these types of books have the medical profession as the baddies but not so in this one. Here we have a good few of a busy ER, the dedicated staff and the things they find - like attempted murder. Nice mix of characters showing the extent of the diversity of people flowing through the department and a well rounded plot that drives a charge nurse and a detective into a collaboration (well sort of) of an investigation. A hit and run that turns into murder, a loan shark and the people caught up in the wake. Good humour mixed in. Some great one liners and although the outcome isn't great for everyone it shows that sometimes you have to accept that parts of the criminal community do get off scott free.
It's a start. Shortish story which I assumed the answer to on I think page 3, tho of course you dont know until the end. Too much intrusion into lives of others by a 30 year old nurse, which is probably why she's srtill single. Too many references to. The brown eyes of the detective. Read like what i would guess Nancy Drew mysteries are. Young girlish. Author needs experience if shes writing for adults.
I really enjoyed this book. I love the whole idea of the nurse being the main character because it is so different to the normal cozy mysteries out there and do you know what? It really worked. Most of the mystery takes place in and around a very busy hospital, so no running off while she is meant to be working, which gets annoying for me in most books. The mystery was good and unfolded nicely as the story develops, along with the great characters. I even liked the way the goon found a way to keep threatening the main character without being obvious, very in keeping with the story and cleverly done. There was also a love interest, which added a light and funny side to the story. I will be looking in to getting the next book. Laurel is the nurse in charge when a bit and run victim arrives in the E.R bringing along with him a very loud distraught wife and a nosy detective. The detective has his work cut out for him finding out who is responsible but when he sets his sights on one of Laurels patients things get heated in the E.R. Laurel patients are the most important thing to her so when one is threatened by a loan sharks goon she goes to bat for them, so when the detective keeps pestering someone else Laurel once again steps in but by doing this is she putting her own life on the line from the real killer? Only one way to find out and that is to find the real person behind the wheel of the car that night.
This was a sweet little book. A fast read at 172 pages. I enjoyed reading a book set in Texas that didn't overdo it with being "Texan" or "Southern". No dumbing down of the "simple" folks *eyeroll* as is often done by authors who choose one of these settings.
The MC, Laurel, was likable. I did find her attitude a little hard to believe at times. As a former ER nurse, myself, I know for a fact that they wouldn't be yelling and going toe-t0-toe against a cop doing an investigation.
I found Cade to also be likable. He seems like a solid kind of guy. I'm not sure he'd be interested in somebody who nags and carries on as much as Laurel does. Looks can only take a girl so far before personality overrides them. Laurel is in danger of being one of those types of women, the kind that sends a man packing very quickly. Hopefully the author shows other, more endearing qualities, in her in the next book.
I pretty much knew the second they were introduced what happened. The author didn't even bother with red herrings or to hide the mystery. I suspect the main gist of her storytelling is the set up for the romance.
Then there is the ending..... *sighs*.... the ending is why I lowered a star. Seriously with her jumping in the middle of it? I happen to agree with her, she did ruin the start of the relationship.
Laurel is the charge nurse in a hospital in the Bryan-College Station area when a hit-and-run victim arrives. His condition seems to pique the interest of another patient and her son who arrive at almost the same time. When the hit-and-run victim dies, handsome detective Cade is on the case, investigating in the hospital and flirting with Laurel. Laurel’s interest in her patients eventually gets her too involved in the case and her safety becomes an issue. This is the first in a series of cozy mysteries set in Texas, whoop, and it’s a good one.
What a fun book! This is exactly what I look for in a cozy, romantic story. The Detective and Nancy Drew, aka Laurel, whose real occupation is ER nurse, meet and begin unravelling a hideous crime. So well written, as I expected from The Sisters series, these characters come alive and the flirting and fear can be observed by the reader. I cant wait for the next in this series!
The author weaves crime and romance into, look largely, a hospital setting. All clean language and scenes with sometimes witty, flirty or evil and desperate characters. With some of the scenes I had to remind myself that the setting isn't of this century but late last century and a small private hospital. Certainly different policies and practices than the hospital in my own rural town and with modern day rules and regulations.
I really enjoyed this. I’m a sucker for good cozy mysteries and this one was no different! I admit I really enjoyed the medical aspect of it since I’m in school for a career in the medical field I’m excited to see where this series with Laure l and Cade go as well as the tie in series with other members of staff at Texas General!
A great start to a new series that I look forward to continuing!! Loved Laurel as the main character and her interactions with Cade were delightful. I enjoyed the hospital as the main setting and the interactions of all the characters. Eagerly anticipating the next books in the planned cross-genre series!!
I loved the chemistry between Laurel and Cade especially their banter. The short length of this mystery meant, it draws you in instantly and keeps you hooked till the end. I can't wait to read the next book in this series. I've downloaded it and plan to spend my weekend with Nurse Benson and Detective Resnick.
You will love this story. Laurel is a nurse in the ER. She meets Detective Cade when they bring in a hit and run victim. As more people come in the DR Laurel get more involved with each patient. Opposites attract and this makes for some funny moments. Such a delightful story. Becki did it again.
I felt there was too much time with descriptive text especially in the early text. It almost felt like the writer was trying to get in as many words as possible. Very early in the book you knew where the story was going. Once the author got into telling the story it became more enjoyable. Not a bad book but not great.
This is a great start to a new series. Likable characters and an interesting murder mystery makes for a great cozy! I’m looking forward to reading more in this series.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Something entirely new in the cozy mystery genre. As a Texas girl, I loved it! The characters are down to earth individuals, each with a story of their own. I can't wait for the next story to come to life. Well done Becki!
I really liked the unusual setting of a busy Emergency Room. The mystery pulled me in and kept my interest until the very end. I liked the romance in the story line, normally I don't but it worked in this one. The characters are well developed and I look forward to more of Laurel and Cade.
Me Willis continues to entertain me with her stories This new series of cozy mysteries is right up my alley I can read as I retire at night and not be concerned with nightmares from dark tales Again she chooses interesting characters and unusual venues.
This is an entertaining story despite its predictable storyline. An emergency room nurse inadvertantly becomes involved in the investigation of the death of a local businessman. Besides, the detective investigating the crime is super Hot!
Probably the best clean and fun mystery that I have read in a long while. Awesome story, characters, and story line. Definitely on,e not to miss. Happy reading.
Enjoyable. I loved the setting. I didn’t agree with everything that Laurel did, but that didn’t mean I couldn’t enjoy it! Entertaining. Maybe not the best cozy ever, but promising.
I liked the story line, the characters and the location. Looking forward to book 2. I like mystery’s and romance, not sure about just romance stories. We’ll see.
