3.5
This was a quick read, with a second chance. It was supposed to be dark mafia, but there wasn’t really anything dark about it, not that it was light and fluffy either, in my opinion.
I enjoyed Roger and Jill’s reunion, they’re meant to be, but I didn’t feel a connection with them. I didn’t feel part of the story.
As much as the last couple chapters could be seen as a HEA (you more than likely don’t need to read more in the series if you just want the love story of these two), I felt like there were unresolved issues. There were definitely things that could be seen as a cliffhanger OF THE STORY, even though Roger and Jill get their resolve and “fairytale ending.” I’d definitely consider this as more as a HFN, but feel like the other books in this series are going to need to be read to find the conclusion to other happenings in the book. (I won’t spoil what they are, you’ll have to read for yourself.)
So as much as I enjoyed this romance, I couldn’t give it a full four stars, due to the cliffhanger-like feeling for myself, the detachment I felt from the story and characters, and going in thinking it was going to be dark, but not feeling that it was.
Mafia, kidnapping, second chance
