**A never before released volume from the Prince of Preachers on the Person and Work of the Holy Spirit**
"In our day a biblical understanding of the Spirit’s work is sorely needed. Confusion about who He is and what He does abounds, and too often we proceed through life relying on our power rather than His.
Many contemporary works about the Holy Spirit are focused solely on either promoting or refuting the excesses of the extreme charismatic movement, and so there is a need to examine what Scripture has to say on the subject from a different vantage point. Spurgeon’s sermons provide just such a vantage point. They are at once timeless expositions of the truth of God’s Word and timely exhortations for the church to give proper, biblical focus on the person of the Holy Spirit." —From the Foreword by Clay Kraby

Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892) was England's best-known preacher for most of the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1854, just four years after his conversion, Spurgeon, then only 20, became pastor of London's famed New Park Street Church (formerly pastored by the famous Baptist theologian, John Gill). The congregation quickly outgrew their building, moved to Exeter Hall, then to Surrey Music Hall. In these venues, Spurgeon frequently preached to audiences numbering more than 10,000—all in the days before electronic amplification. In 1861, the congregation moved permanently to the newly constructed Metropolitan Tabernacle.
Spurgeon is so good at making doctrine easy to understand and to practically apply without “dumbing it down” so to speak. Such an encouragement to read about the role and power of the Spirit, especially in times of weakness, as He is and will be my strength!
These ten sermons are, like all of Spurgeon's, deeply "experimental" in the old sense of the term. They are not academic essays ("learned treatises"); although informed by Scripture and careful theological reflection, their emphasis is on lived fact.
Spurgeon has long been my example of a happy Calvinism. Now I find he is also my example of a living and confident cessationism. The behavior of some Christians has sadly made these sound like oxymorons, but they contain only apparent contradictions.
I believe some of the confirmatory works of the Spirit were unique to the first century of the church, but I do not believe the Spirit himself was unique to that time! "Although we may not expect," writes Spurgeon, "and need not desire, the miracles which came with the gift of the Holy Spirit, so far as they were physical, yet we may both desire and expect that which was intended and symbolized by them, and we may reckon to see the like spiritual wonders performed among us at this day." May the Spirit be active in our lives today, no less, if differently, than he was in days gone by.
As the title implies, a collection of Ten sermons by Charles Spurgeon, which tells of the nature of the Holy Spirit. From the work, the role, and the power of the Holy spirit, Spurgeon covers virtually every aspect to be known and clearly defines for us what scripture says about the spirit. Personally eye-opening, I’d recommend this book any day of the week. Thank God for the Holy Spirit and that he reveals himself through scripture, to us. Thank God for Spurgeon who did his utmost to glorify Christ as he preached about the spirit.
We often think of God, we often thank Jesus, but how often do we really acknowledge the power of the third person in the Trinity the holy spirit? In this book Charles Spurgeon brings forth so many practical truths about how the spirit lives in us and all of the ways that it affects us. It is powerful, personal, and one of those books that sticks with you. Read it slowly and take time to let this sink in. It will enrich your walk with God!
As I began to read this book I was quickly grasp by the fact that there is so much more to the Holy Spirit than we often want to think. We have this small view of something that is greater than we could ever understand and more important to our relationship with God than we could ever understand. That is not the since that you get as you look at these works that are a part of this book. While no one will ever fully grasp and understand all there is to know and learn about the Holy Spirit. In these words we begin to see how important it is to dig deep and not simply have a superficial view. The words of this preacher ring true today just as they did all those years ago. The mastery and attention grabbing detail that these sermons contain should lead even the most seasoned believer to cry out to God for a deeper and deeper understand of the Spirit and His work and also to examine our own lives and understanding.
wonderful collection of sermons. no one does it like the Spurge.
i gave it four stars for a couple reasons—mainly, that i discovered i do not enjoy reading sermons as much as i love listening to them. lol. so mostly due to personal preference.
however, the second reason i gave this four stars were all of the typos. the publishing company did not do a good job with proof-reading and it annoyed me.
other than that, a very insightful and edifying book. i did enjoy it a lot and would recommend it.
Spurgeon was a humble and powerful vessel of the Holy Spirit, and his sermons are as practical as they are informative. If Emmanuel means God with us, the Spirit is Him. You cannot walk with Christ without a deep conviction of the Trinity, and these sermons will help you see.
Unbelievable book written a hundred years ago is still as true and applicable and challenging as it was then as now. Holy Spirit is necessary in every area of my and ever believers life.
Fantastic overview of the person and work of the Holy Spirit!
Spurgeon is masterful at bringing truth to life and in this work he does just that. He expounds upon Scripture after Scripture as he explains the practical importance of the Spirit in the life of the believer.
The reader has no doubt where he stands if the time is taken to read these sermons on the Holy Spirit. I come away humbled and excited to pray that my life on earth produces the fruit of the Spirit.
The most complete description of the activities of the divine Holy Spirit in our lives. Spurgeon shows us how utterly dependent we are on God and truly have nothing to boast about.
