I thought my aunts were the only ones plagued with supernatural doom and gloom. Turns out, it runs in the family. I thought I was doing the right thing by making a promise to my friend, and now, apparently, there's hell to pay.
When my own personal demon blows my business up, he thinks he's closed me down for good. But I inherited more than just a demon problem from my aunts - I also got their steadfast unwillingness to let a small setback dictate the terms of my life.
So now my investigative agency is "mostly open" after the hellspawn Madigan's explosive tantrum, and that's fine. It's going to take a lot more than hellfire to make me break my promise.
I'm trying to think of anything I actually liked about this book. Tuesday, I liked Tuesday Other than that it was one big jumbled mess more than anything else.
My first impression was of a confusing writing style of half finished thoughts, backtracking or jumping tracks mid thought... Second impression: poor editing. both in grammar/ spelling as well as things like keeping people's names straight. During their first meeting and subsequent phone call it was Caleb Baker, at the second meeting she was suddenly calling/referring to him as Caleb/Mr. Black for no apparent reason or towards the end first it was Delilah Night, then Knight.
As for the rest there was no world building to speak of and even less character building. So much simply didn't make sense. From what she tells us at the beginning she literally just got her P.I. license and opened the office, in fact we start with her first day there and yet she already has dozens of clients, working at least half a dozen cases at once as a one-woman-show?!? Or she keeps talking like she's this old pro whose been doing this for years, when its been less than a week? Everything seemed to be resolved by name dropping, gut instinct or sheer dumb luck, so no skills or actual logical explanations required. Personally she's all over the place and for no apparent reason other than her constant name dropping and referring to the events in Deadwood (self advertisement much?!?) she's suddenly supposed to be this "bad ass" (which should also be 1 word, not 2) player in town. Also, what's with the Levi-lust-infatuation? It serves no reason, adds nothing to the story or the character. If anything I found it creepy and borderline gross. I honestly don't know why or how managed to finish it, I guess, I wanted to see how it ends only what we're left with in the end is like a gazillion different open, unfinished, unresolved storylines and plot pieces
Loved Deana a little more than Desdemona from the other series. I really liked Tuesday as well, and vampires are more interesting than zombies. This one had a great urban fantasy feel paired with mystery. The connection with the aunts of the other series was great too. You get a feel for a big messy family that have eachothers backs. Also lowkey hope Levi is in the second one. It kind of tickles me that she might end up with someone so similar to her great great grandpa Doc Holliday. (Note this book had no romance, it's just my hope for future developments)
Deana Holliday Nightingale, newly-licensed PI, must use her supernatural heritage to solve the murder of a vampire and to take up the mantle of Caleb, a wendigo about to pass on. She must free a former friend from a vampire charge of murder, protect a magical pistol from a demon’s grasp, thwart the evil plans of the LA vampire boss, help Caleb pass peacefully, and escape the vengeance of the boss vampire - to Bisbee AZ where she opens the eponymous Mostly Open Paranormal investigative Agency with a civilized vampire as her partner.
Deana Holliday is part of the Nightingale family of witches (you can follow their story in other series by Lisa Manifold). She has a detective agency in Venice, CA that deals with the usual types of cases until a face from her past opens the door. That's the beginning of a fascinating romp as Deana searches for the killer of a vampire, meets a Native American spirit and has her office blown up by a demon. I couldn't put this down and immediately downloaded the next book.
I liked this book. After a string of bad reads, this one was a relief. I have never read the other books in the series, which made this one slightly confusing at first. I do not plan on reading the previous books that connects this series, but this was a nice, strong start of a new series.
Loved this book!! Couldn't put it down once I started. With witches, vampires, demons, mermaids, immortals and lots more, this adventure pulls you along on a fast paced adventure. The first for me...but so not my last...an author and series to add to my lists!!!! If the others are on this line, looks like I'll be stocking up soon.
Holy shiznet!!! What a gr8 story. This mystery grabbed me from the first page and held me to the end. Deana is one tough cookie and I like her. I recommend this read 5 Thumbs up
I love Deana, er, Delilah already. And her vampire sidekick Tuesday is awesome. I'll be reading the whole series and then catching up on the family as well. Thank you Lisa! Brenda H Author
I loved Deanna. Although my favorite character has to be Tuesday. It was fun watching all of the twists and turns in this book. I laughed before I finished the first chapter and found myself instantly hating some of the characters. I couldn't put it down. I can't wait to find out what happens next and I'm fairly certain I need to read everything Lisa Manifold has ever written.
