A Coast Guard captain would rather spend his time on the sea...unless he's with the woman he's been crushing on for months. Can Brooklynn and Dave make their second chance stick? Love's second chance on the beach!
David Reddington has spent years in the Coast Guard, and his career brings him a lot of joy. But he’s lonely even surrounded by his crew, and he feels like he’s perpetually looking out to the ocean, hoping and wishing he could be as fulfilled on land as he is at sea.
Brooklynn Parrish lost her husband three years ago to an accident on the ocean, and she can’t bring herself to accept Dave’s invitations to dinner. Or lunch. Or even coffee. How he can go out on his ship each day baffles her, and she’s not willing to lose another loved one to the relentless ocean waves.
But Dave only has eyes for her, and when they get put together to organize Hawthorne Harbor’s Spring Fling, Brooklynn can’t deny the attraction between them. As they go through the bachelor auction, tour the blooming apple orchards, and judge the dessert bake-off, their relationship deepens and strengthens. Will she be strong enough to battle the unyielding ocean? Or will she lose her heart to another man destined for a catastrophe at sea?

Sweet story, but probably the hardest to get through of thr Hawthorne Harbor books so far. Most are 1 day page turners. This one I kept falling asleep reading.
Dave's a captain of a Coast Guard boat. Brooklynn's a member of Magleby royalty. They dated in high school and she ended up marrying her adulthood sweetheart when Dave left to join the USCG. Hubby dies in an accident in the ocean and Brooklynn is terrified of getting into another relationship with anyone, especially Dave, who spends everyday on his boat. Love ensues, he wins over the girl, and then a huge breakup. Pretty common theme. Dave comes up with super romantic gesture to propose to her at his USCG retirement party. He's been considering retiring long before he and Brooklynn got together and what perfect timing than now. But wait... With the help of counseling, Brooklynn not only treks onto the beach at the break of day to bring Dave breakfast in order to make amends, but once he proposes and they start planning, she decides to see if they can get married on the ship that Dave captained for 5 years to surprise him. Cause, you know... sappy love story. Would I read this one again? Likely not. Do these books require being read in succession? Nope. Would I recommend this author? Yes, in moderation. You can only read the same storyline so many times before it gets a bit redundant.

A Coast Guard captain would rather spend his time on the sea...unless he's with the woman he's been crushing on for months. If Dave asks just one more time, will Brooklynn give their second chance at romance another shot?

Ryker had a job that he had loved for years but was so familiar that he was getting bored, say nothing about the discomfort of facing the elements on cold days. He was ready for a change in his life...for some permanency.
Brooklyn, on the other hand, still had not healed from the death of her first husband. The circumstances of his death had left her with irrational fears. How did she conquer them?
I loved the setting and the peek into life in the Coast Guard. High on my list was the faith & maturity they showed while dealing with the curves that life throws at us. Real life issues aren't settled with just a change of mind-set, it is a healing process and Elana gives us more than just a surface look at the process of healing and all of the other hits that come along with it.
So, same town but not recognized characters. But, I was really enthralled with this book. I loved getting a glimpse at the coast guard life. Those were some of my favorite scenes. I liked the slow burn aspect too. I’m sad this series is ending, but I know that there are more great series where this came from.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Brooklyn and Dave dated a few times during high school but then Dave left for the Coast Guard. When he came back she was with someone else then she got married. Brooklyn has not dated anyone since her husband died in an accident in the ocean a couple years ago. She has lived in fear of anything to do with the water. The fear Brooklyn feels is real to her but to everyone else they feel she is overreacting. Dave is a Captain on one of the Coast Guard ships. Brooklyn wants nothing to do with Dave at first because he works on the water but as they work on the bachelor auction she can't resist him anymore and gives in. She tells him if he will be a bachelor in the auction she will go out with him. Now twenty years later will they have a chance? As they get closer they learn more about each other and that they love each other but neither will admit it yet. Will she be able to handle it when he has to leave her during a storm to go to work to rescue a couple boat in the ocean? Will Dave retire from the Coast Guard like he has been thinking?
Dave and Brooklynn dated in high school and then he joined the Coast Guard. Now it's 20 years later and he's come back to Hawthorne Harbor as a Captain in the Coast Guard stationed close by. Brooklynn lost her husband 3 years ago due to an accident while he was parasailing. Ever since that accident, Brooklynn has closed herself off from relationships and is afraid of water. Dave has been asking Brooklynn to go on a date and she's refused. When he volunteers on the Spring Fling in order to be close to her, she says she'll go on a date if he puts himself up on the Bachelor auction. They start dating and getting closer. In order for Brooklynn to get past her fears, she gets counseling but it's not enough to overcome her fears yet when Dave has to go out in a storm to rescue people. Will they give up on their relationship or continue giving their romance a second chance. This is a clean, sweet romance and I enjoyed it a lot. I received an advanced copy and this is my honest review.
I loved these two so much I wanted to strangle them. Dave’s had a secret, long-standing crush on Brooklynn that she’d never guessed. Since her husband’s death, Brooklynn has been afraid of the ocean. It’s an irrational fear, but it’s also a little bit understandable because it was that same ocean that took her husband from her. Dave’s job as a Captain in the Coast Guard triggers all her fears. I’m so proud to see that she reaches out for help, but it was still frustrating to watch as this pair torpedoed their relationship time and time again. I thought there are strong similarities between this book and that of Adam and Janey. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author.
Dave and Brooklynn knew each other in high school, but each of their lives went its own way soon after with Dave joining the Coast Guard. Brooklynn was happily married for 3 years before her husband died from an accident in the ocean. How could she ever get back liking Dave Reddington! This relationship certainly had its challenges, but somehow .....Of course, once Dave set his mind that it was time to retire, a plan was formed! And her anxieties and time without him helped her realize she needed him in her life. Thank you once again for the subtle cues from Aunt Mabel! Bless her heart for finding love in her 90's!
Enjoyed the book for a number of reasons. It was relaxing reading and the limited number of characters meant I wasn’t always trying to figure out who was who, as many recent books seem to be. It highlighted a man whose career is the Coast Guard which brought in some information about his responsibilities on his job. Just a nice, pleasant story and I recommend it if you like a relaxing romantic novel. I’ve read several by this author and will, I am sure, read many more.
Dave is a Coast Guard Captain and has been trying to go out with Brooklynn for a while, but she's not interested because her husband died at sea. She doesn't even go to the beach whereas Dave can't envision not being on the water. They eventually start going out but then Dave has to go out in a storm to rescue people and Brooklynn can't cope. Will she overcome her fear of the ocean?
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
A great story that highlights the work of the U.S. Coast Guard!!! Dave and Brooklynn dated in high school but he went into the Coast Guard and when he returned she was engaged then married. They reconnect later in life when Brooklynn is a widow. Can she get over her fears of losing Dave the same way she lost her husband? This is another great book in the Hawthorne Harbor series where the characters are “more mature”.
A young widow decides to take a chance and start dating a man who captain's a Coast Guard vessel. She has big anxiety since her husband died in a water accident. She has to decide if she can deal with a man whose job is on a boat. He has been thinking about retiring, but will he make the decision before she breaks down and pulls away. The author did a good job detailing the anxiety felt and the way it impacts decisions. I received a complimentary copy and I am voluntarily reviewing.
I really enjoyed this series. It is a nice summer read. The characters in this book are interesting and engaging. I really liked David. He is sweet with a commanding presence. Brooklyn has a fear of being hurt in love again, but she doesn't understand what it means to involved with someone in the military. A lot of women are not cut out to be married to someone in the military or law enforcement. Nice to see Aunt Mabel found her happy ever after.
Dave is Captain of a Coast Guard ship and has loved Brooklyn since they met in high school. There's only one big problem: Brooklyn lost her husband three years ago from an accident on the ocean, so she is petrified of losing Dave when he is on his ship. Their relationship is on-again and off-again because of her fear. I loved the way they work together to find a solution that will result in finally staying together.
Sweet, clean, quick read. Brooklynn's angst was understandable and the captain's insecurities about her anxiety was understandable as well. I felt like rooting for them to be able to work out their issues and was glad that she got enough therapy to work through her problems.
No sex, language or violence
*I received a complimentary ARC of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
David is looking at the end of his military career and hoping for the beginning of a personal life with Brooklynn. She has not faced her fears and loss of her husband almost four years ago. A sweet read. As a military officer, he would have a college degree. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
Dave has loved Brooklyn for years. Will he finally have his love returned? She lost her husband to the sea and is afraid of losing Dave the same way. He was so very patient with her and she really did try to overcome her fear. I love reading about romances about a couple in their 40's or older. This book makes you feel.
Love your books! I can count on your books to be well worth the time to read! As I read other books I know that your books are my #one favorite author. Just as soon as my surgery is finished I will be catching up on all your book I have missed. Good thing I have kindle unlimited. ☺😇
I did not care much for your main character, Brooklyn. She seemed very selfish this king of only her fears and not Dave's love for the Coast Guard and the sea. I was hoping he would find a new girl and let her live with underdogs. Usually I love your stories, but this one left me with a bad feel I g for the ending.
I really enjoyed this story. I've read military romances but rarely the Coast Guard and this was a refreshing change. Johnson likes to write about older couples rather than those in their twenties. I love it. The characters are believable and well-developed and the tension is just right. And the unexpected twists make things so much more interesting.
Brooklyn's fears are unrationally real. Dave's patience are endless but isn't that what we do for those we love go beyond reasonable limits to care for them. Elana brings these feelings out in a way that you can't help but be brought into the story. When Brooklyn realizes what she really needs and how to conquer her fears it's almost too late. Beautiful story.
Enjoyed this book! Because of her losing someone to the water before, she is scared to commit to any feelings for this man. While they are working on a project, she grows to love him and she loses some of her fear. I recommend this book to anyone who reads clean romance!
I'm really enjoying this series about second chances and loved Dave and Brooklyn's story. I look forward to more books in the series. I received this book for free but truly loved the book and voluntarily leave my review.
I enjoyed reading about the Captain's love story. It was exciting to read about his position in the Coast Guard. My husband retired from the Coast Guard with 22 years and 4 months. Elana Johnson is a great writer.
Losing your other half to death can definitely destroy a person's perspective. Can Brooklyn get past her biggest fears as her relationship with Dave grows? Only time can tell if she can heal before it destroys them? ~
A second-chance story. He'd had a crush on her since high Scholl & he was now eligible to retire from the Coast Guard She was a widow & full of anxiety about certain fears. She'd refused him several times when he asked her out. A Great, clean story.
This novel was okay, not the best that I have read but definitely not the worst. I enjoyed this book for the majority of the storyline but towards the end I felt it was too drawn out. I wish they could have wrapped it up a little sooner, I feel like it would have worked out better.
It's fun to read about second chances. Not many people get a second chance in their 40s or older. Great series, goods writing and the editing was actually very good throughout this series.
