Love Across Time #4

Ride the Whirlwind

Rate this book
Soulmates across time. Two hearts, stronger together.

In present day, Maxton is good at finding trouble and bad at everything else.

In 1892, Trent Harrington, sheriff of Trinidad, Colorado, lives a respectable but lonely life, devoid of any closeness.

Trying to escape a past that keeps chasing him, Maxton drives south to avoid getting arrested. When his car spins off the road, he is swept up in a desert whirlwind and finds himself in the year 1892. Lost and alone, unused to the laws of the wild west, Maxton gets arrested anyway.

Trent is tasked with escorting Maxton to Trinidad. The request isn't unusual, but the miscreant is. Maxton draws Trent's heart out of its shell with his flashing green eyes and lush head of hair. It isn't right. It isn't natural. It's illegal. Yet Trent cannot resist the impetuous young man.

As the two men travel through the vast, empty desert to their destination, will they find in each other the love and companionship they never thought they'd have?

A male/male time travel romance, complete with the scent of desert roses, brilliantly colored sunsets, starlit nights, bitter campfire coffee, growing honesty and trust, and true love across time.

Jackie North has been writing stories since grade school and spent years absorbing the mainstream romances that she found at her local grocery store. She also wanted to put her English degree to good use and write romance novels, because for years she’s had a never-ending movie of made-up love stories in her head that simply wouldn’t leave her alone.

As fate would have it, she discovered m/m romance and decided that men falling in love with other men was exactly what she wanted to write books about.

She creates characters who are a bit flawed and broken, who find themselves on the edge of society, and maybe a few who are a little bit lost, but who all deserve a happily ever after. (And she makes sure they get it!)

She likes long walks on the beach, the smell of lavender and rainstorms, and enjoys sleeping in on snowy mornings. She is especially fond of pizza and beer and, when time allows, long road trips with soda fountain drinks and rock and roll music. In her heart, there is peace to be found everywhere, but since in the real world this isn’t always true, Jackie writes for love.

Ride the Whirlwind is the third Love Across Time book set in 1892 New Mexico. I strongly suggest reading at least the second book (Laurie and John's story) in the series prior to reading this one. (The first book is a standalone.)

Maxton is Laurie's roommate and receives two letters Laurie sent in 1892. Once Laurie's friend Zach disappears (Zach and Layton's story, book 3), Maxton becomes a person of interest in the ongoing police investigation. A former foster kid, Maxton is no stranger to being in trouble with the law. He's got the police hounding him on one side and the gang he's working for on the other.

For Maxton, 1892 signifies a new beginning.

Unfortunately, the day Maxton sets foot in 1892 New Mexico, he's arrested. Sheriff Trent is sent to pick him up and transport him to Laurie. Trent has no idea about Maxton's relationship with Laurie, but he hopes that maybe Maxton is like him, like (he suspects) the men at the hotel, and desires other men.

Trent is the calm and steady presence to Maxton's chaotic storm. Maxton is just waiting for someone to hurt him, but Trent surprises him time and again as the men travel along the Rio Grande to reach Laurie and John's hotel.

This is a quieter story than book 3 and almost entirely relationship focused. Maxton comes to trust Trent, and Trent holds Maxton in the present even as the whirlwind threatens to send Maxton back to the future. Trent literally and figuratively becomes Maxton's keeper.

Trent is my favorite character in this series. He's gentle and kind; his longing for a partner, someone to call his own, is poignant. I teared up anytime Trent mentioned his little yellow house. Trent loves his house, but the emptiness hurts and loneliness waits in every corner.

Maxton wants to be Trent's, but Trent is afraid. He's always hidden his nature and hates fabricating half-truths. He can't imagine finally having what his heart's desired for so long.

The steam is on the low end, which is perfectly appropriate considering the men's tender sexual exploration. Maxton is, after all, Trent's first everything. Trent is a little old-fashioned, a little shy, which was so utterly endearing, I just wanted to hug him.

The ending is a bit tentative but I definitely consider it a sweet HEA for Trent and Maxton.

"My plan is to buy you a rocking chair from Sears & Roebuck," said Trent, his heart lifting. "I've been thinking about it for days ...."

"We'll order it tomorrow," said Maxton ... "Then you and me can rock together. That'll be perfect, I think."

”Tell me again how only the desert will know.”

Another winner from this series!!

While Trent and Maxton story is different than previous ones, I can’t help but swoon. I love how far they’ve come to keep finding each other. I adore them 🥰

Their relationship development was complicated, but the reasoning behind it was beautiful. Trent had a hard time with his sexuality since he was young and that’s the kind of representation I need in my books. I love his realisation and how he contemplates that being gay isn’t wrong. And how he tried to push away what he was taught about homosexuality and fight for Maxton. I loved that the most. The way he treasure all the moments he had of Maxton, just because he always dreamt of it. Damn, it was so heartbreaking. I cried reading that part of his story, so beautiful and memorable.

Maxton was just the perfect pair for Trent. He’s outgoing and don’t give a flying fuck about anyone who cares about his sexuality. Heeee I adore him too!

Though I do hope for longer time, details and moments they shared in the desert, their story was just as before, heartwarming. I’m not a fan of how they had to leave each other for a while before finding each other back, but that’s just who they are. And seeing how Trent grew up, it just makes perfect sense for them to take their time. Push and pull, push and pull.

I can’t wait for the next one! And thanks Hugo for the absolute mess my rants are ;)

FYI -- "Ride the Whirlwind" builds on the previous books in the Love Across Time series (Wild as the West Texas Wind and Honey From the Lion) and while this could be read as a standalone, you'll definitely want to read the first two books in the series to get a better feel of the relationship between the three time traveling friends, Laurie, Zach and Maxton.

With Laurie and John working (with the help of Zach and Layton) to open their hotel in 1892 Trinidad, Colorado, Maxton is not doing well alone in the present. He loses the apartment he and Laurie shared, and runs afoul of both a local motorcycle gang as well the police and FBI who wonder what he knows about the mysterious disappearances of his two friends, Laurie and Zach. Driving through a whirlwind throws him into the past and he ends up in a nearby jail being abused by the deputies. Sheriff Trent Harrington is asked by Laurie to retrieve Maxton and bring him to Trinidad.

The plot beautifully brings together these two lonely men. Maxton protects his frightened heart with a tough asshat-ish shell while Trent hides behind his respectable job and reputation, but each so desperately need love and support. In their journey through the desert, Trent finally (briefly) gets past "too many years of holding back, most likely, or pure cowardice, he didn't know which" and has an incredibly sexy and moving experience with Maxton:
He could not believe that there could be laughter amidst the passion, kindness, acknowledgment without judgment. Trent flung his forearm across his eyes to hide the tears that streaked from the outer corners of his eyes.
Trent works to teach Maxton that gentleness and kindness have a place in a relationship, but when Trent returns to Trinidad with Maxton ... the pace of the story grinds to a frustrating crawl as Trent hides back in his shell and returns to his lonely little yellow house on the hill overlooking town. The remainder of the book focuses almost solely on Trent denying himself, Maxton feeling he isn't worthy of love and John mediating between Zach and Maxton's petty squabbles. But we finally get an ending that is almost worth the wait:
This, above all things, had been woven into his dreams in the night, his waking thoughts in the day. To be in bed with another man, where they would just hold each other and talk about their day until their voices grew drowsy and they fell asleep in each other's arms. He'd not quite realized it till this moment, how much that dream had meant to him. And now it was about to come true.
The author really does a nice job of picking up on the nuances of the era, lovingly describing the scenery of the desert and exploring the mindset of people of the era. Where "Ride the Whirlwind" really works for me is Trent's emotional growth and acceptance of his sexuality. However the pacing is sooooo slow and honestly I kept waiting for Tom Ketchum to show up to mix things up! But overall, another enjoyable time travel read from Jackie North and 4 stars for "Ride the Whirlwind."

I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I really looked forward to Maxton’s story, the last of the three friends and left behind when Laurie and Zach went into the past. Maxton’s journey falls somewhere between the relative ease of Laurie’s introduction to John and the terrifying events Zach experienced. It is another fascinating trip into the past and exploration of gay love in the old west that I expected. The stormy conduit to the past that Maxton uses seems almost anthropomorphic this time, intriguingly different from Laurie and Zach’s experiences. There are passages that really touched me, describing the internal struggles Trent goes through in reconciling his long held plans and beliefs, and how hard it is for Maxton to shed his defenses in a strange environment. Disturbing details from his troubled past that built his hardened nature have to be inferred from his internal dialogue. Chapters that alternate between Maxton and Trent’s voices do provide interesting perspectives and more insight to the secondary figures, especially John. Since these three friends are all accounted for, I’ll be anticipating what the next installment will involve. I really can’t recommend reading this volume without books 2 and 3. It could be read alone, technically, but it really needs the support of those narratives for full enjoyment.

Trent had marched his way into Maxton's heart and made himself known and vulnerable, as if he needed Maxton just as much as Maxton had always needed someone to belong to and with. Someone to love. Someone call his own. Someone like Trent.

4.5 Stars
Jackie North weaves a tale that I just cannot put down, Maxton and Trent's story has been a magical journey of discovery, acceptance, and love. The picturesque narrative was so real I can almost feel the whirlwind ripping the air, visualize the moonlight and how the stars under the vast sky look. Romantic with the right amount of slow burn and steam, this ties up the mystery of how Laurie, Zach, and Maxton traveled to the past. With cameo appearances from both couples in Honey from the Lion and Wild as the West Texas Wind. Sweet sweet ending too.
I know I'm in for a treat with books 5 & 6 if this fourth one is anything to go by.

"I miss us in the desert. I miss us being there. Just you and me and the horses and the river and the sky"
"I miss all the things you miss. Even more, I miss your bright smile.
Every minute we've been apart, I've missed you"

I was waiting for Maxton's story after what happened to Laurie and Zach. Finding out that two of his friends, especially Laurie, disappeared to the past and left him alone, made Maxton's life more miserable. Then the letters came, believed it or not, Maxton finally believed that he's somehow, brought to the past, to the year 1892 where Laurie and Zach settle down and never want to comeback.
But some clouds and a whirlwind seemed determined to bring Maxton back to the future.
But he needed to meet Laurie and Zach. With a help of sheriff Trent, he started his journey to find his buddies.
The journey with Trent, the hide and seek with the whirlwind, and finding a new romance with Trent, felt like one silent story.
Despite of the year where nobody's gay, Trent was a sheriff and he had to keep his good reputation, which made sense that year.

But after seeing what's going on inside the hotel where Laurie, John, Zach and Layton lived, Trent came to jealousy and wanted to live his true self. With Maxton.
But decision didn't easily decided, it has to be John who talked him into senses, that he can also lived his life as he wanted to be. Just need to adjusting with the situation.

I was glad that Trent came into his senses and came to Maxton after their fight one day, and asked Maxton to reach their HEA.

I loved this series! Recommended!

This is my favorite book in this series since the first one. That book feels so separate from these three because that one was time-traveling to the future, not the past and their paths don't cross with these guys at all, but it's still my favorite, and this came in a close second.

Sure, a big part of it was that Maxton told Trent the truth and while Trent didn't believe him at first, believed when the evidence could not be ignored - and it stared him literally in the face. Although no, Laurie and Zach still did not tell John and Layton (why oh why. I know their stories are over with, but I just don't like those two keeping such a huge thing from them. And I mean, would those two really think all three of them were crazy, and Trent too for having seen what he's seen so he believes Maxton as well? *sighh* such a thing that bothers me to this day).

But also another part fo why I loved this was Maxton and Trent together, and the story and how it was neither slow or two fast and what happened interested me and it didn't get too over the top or drag in any way.

I did give .5 off for Maxton, at times, frustrating me a little. I get that he's had a hard life and he expects the worst from people, but sometimes Maxton would act horribly or say horrible shit and then be thinking "this is it, they're going to hurt me/be angry/kick me out etc because that's what they always do" and it felt a little like he wasn't taking any responsibility for any of his actions because "oh, well it's on them because of how they react to me, so it doesn't matter how I act, even if I hurt others" which, sure he felt bad when something happens with Zach, but not nearly enough, I feel.

And a part of me really gets it, I do, I understand Maxton's character and that he's been hurt and abused and abandoned time and again and I know that affects someone deeply, and Maxton is a lot of bravado and masks to protect himself. So for the most part I didn't mind his brash behavior at all, I really didn't. But then a few times, his behavior was uncalled for, and then he wouldn't apologize or anything, or really feel that bad - not enough to apologize - and mostly think that usual "here they go, gonna turn me away or hurt me like always" and there was sense of...idk how to put it, like their reaction to Maxton was all their fault, you know? And like the rest of the guys did not deserve that attitude, I felt? Zach sure didn't help matters at times, no question, but still.

Like there had to be a point where Maxton should have been like "okay maybe I'm protecting myself too much and actually pushing people away when I act like this and they're allowed to have a reaction to what I'm saying" but that didn't always or exactly come. Bothered me a little.

Not to say that I didn't like Maxton, because I did. And he and Trent had a wonderful connection, and I loved reading them together. Maxton could just be a bit much at times. And me understanding his behavior does not mean he gets to be excused, nuh uh. He says some shitty things sometimes.

I adored Trent, he was such a sweet, kind, soft guy who just wanted love but didn't think he could have because he wanted it to be with a guy.

I liked how Trent was able to get past Maxton's walls and into his heart, and Maxton allowed himself to be vulnerable and show his kinder, sweeter side under those walls.

Overall I very much enjoyed this. Also at the end it says there are more installments to come, so that will be interesting to see what couple will be next (and if it will stay in the past or go into present day - as in, a guy from the past comes to the future). I'm excited to see what will happen.

Two thumbs up fro me for this one, definitely recommend!

There is much to love about this time travel romance, much of it sitting firmly in the hands of the wonderfully complex sheriff, Trent. The way he approaches everything to do with Maxton, from the moment he meets the sorry figure that is our time traveller through to the realisation that Maxton is from the future and in his approach to the men at the hotel, despite his well-deserved, and unfortunately earned, reticence, proves himself to be a man of worth over and over. It is no wonder that Maxton falls head over heels.

Much of the story does focus on Maxton and the growth he needs before he can fully embrace who he is and his place in this new, harsh, wild world. Throughout the series there have been hints at Maxton's neediness, doubt, and lack of foundation, Zach disliked him and Laurie despaired for his friend. I really liked the way he was both forced and motivated to mature and I love the way Trent and Maxton were with each other.

This series really is something special. A love story for the times

Soft and sweet, this had so much healing, love, exploration, and tenderness that I think it's my favorite of the series. We got a chance to check in with John and Laurie, Layton and Zach, and to watch Trent realize the balance he can find between love and duty. And watching Maxton deal with his less-than-awesome upbringing and embrace the soft, loving version of himself he previously only felt free to be with Laurie was fantastic. There's not much more beyond this that I could hope for these men.

Maxton's story was a long time coming. We knew him to be the surly, sarcastic, prickly roommate to Laurie except there were so many other parts of him we hadn't known about until now. The reasons for his attitude are heartbreaking and while I kind of feel like I wanted more explanation and detail, what we were given was enough to grasp the depth of his hurt and damage. And in his softer moments I fell in love with him. I don't know that I'd call him fully healed from his past trauma and reformed of his salty behavior, but he promised it best when he promised Laurie he'd try. He made so many strides to showing his best self and believing that he would no longer be punished for it that I couldn't help but feel for him and see that he'd be just fine in the end.

For Maxton's partner we could have had someone "alpha" who could be the strong hand Maxton needed to call him out on his behavior, we could have had someone just as abused and hurt as he was so they could find comfort in and empathy for one another, or we could have had Trent. Trent was the strong, silent, infinitely kind man who needed the brightness Max buried deep and could give Max the patience he needed to figure himself out. It was the perfect pairing and while both men really did need one another, they served more as a catalyst for their individual self-reflection and turnaround that was essential to them finding their future happiness.

If we had gotten a little bit of an epilogue or some closure to Trent's family situation I would have really liked that, but since this story was more focused on the relationship between Trent and Maxton, I didn't think it diminished the overall story by being omitted. What stuck for me was all the small things that made my heart tighten and swell: the rocking chair, the little yellow house, the tender touches, the sweet confessions, the softness, the love...and really, it's always all about the love.

I just love this series and I’m so happy the author put in her end blurb that there’s more to come in the love across time series.
Like the rest of the books in the series, the stream is low but when it’s there is pretty steamy. I felt it had a good, fast paced plot. Never once did I feel like the author was waiting words. I liked the balance between POV’s, dialogue, inner monologue, etc. the characters were easy to like although Trent was easier to warm up to. He’s really just a sweet, lonely guy who cannot see anything else that what he can do with what he’s been given. As far as he’s concerned, love with a man is an evil pipe dream and it takes him a long time to entertain it being a reality. Maxton took a little more time to warm up to but I could empathize with his struggles. Sometimes I felt like(for the safety of them both) he really needed to take the time period he was in into account more but at the same time, that’s exactly what he’s all about. And he owns it at the same time. He knows he’s pushing it with his devil-May-care attitude but it’s his conditioned self defense mechanism. And even telling Trent early on that he’s from the future fits his personality perfectly. I was actually glad he did that especially when Trent was forced to see the truth on it in the form of a greyhound bus. And even then he struggled to disembark the River Denial. And I’m really hoping he’ll get to send for his sister next book. I feel like that was left open ended for a reason.
Once they got to Trinidad, Trent did exactly was any 1892 closeted man would do so there wasn’t disappoint there. I knew he’d take a while to work everything out. Zach really got on my nerves. He went through a traumatic journey but seemed to completely ignore the signs of Maxton’s journey (ahem, broken arm). Not to mention I got the feeling he was aware enough that Maxton’s had an abusive upbringing and was less equipped to handle things with ease. They were both constantly baiting each other but I expected Zach to be the bigger man and at the very least not start shit. I’d understand if it was all Maxton starting it but Zach was on him before he even got inside and he had plenty of time to mentally prepare for his arrival. All in all, I was so happy to see him reunited with Laurie again.
I can’t wait to see what she’ll do with the next book. I think I saw something about Hemingway in the title so we might be moving into another group and a whole bunch of cats.

A troubled young man used to finding himself on the wrong side of the law travels back in time and falls in love with a sheriff. If that were the extent of this story, it would even be enough. But Maxton’s trip back in time means that he could be reunited with his best friend in the world, Laurie, who traveled back to 1891 previously himself and found his own happily-ever-after with John (see Honey from the Lion, Love Across Time #2). When Laurie left, Maxton lost the only person in his life who loved him unconditionally, and he wants him back so very much. Sheriff Trent Harrington is tasked with escorting Maxton to Trinidad, where Laurie lives; meeting Trent and getting a glimpse at the possibility of his own happily-ever-after is more than Maxton could ever have imagined, and perhaps more than he could even allow himself to hope for.

Ever the Queen of the Slow Burn, Jackie North allows her characters to spend some time together, getting to know each other gradually as she paints a picture of beautiful vistas in the unspoiled American West. You almost believe you can see the colors of the sunset as Trent and Maxton ride horses along the Rio Grande River. A narrative filled with evocative locations and period correct settings draws you further into the story, and Maxton’s anxiety grabs hold of your heart as you cannot help but wish him the strength to persevere. Never having truly believed that a love of his own was in the cards for him, Maxton can be his own worst enemy, and his awakening to all that a relationship with Trent could mean, beyond a roll in the hay, is compelling.

Jackie North’s Love Across Time series includes three stories set in the American West of 1891-2. Three friends – Laurie, Zack and Maxton – are each given his own story. HONEY FROM THE LION and WILD AS THE WEST TEXAS WIND are Laurie’s and Zack’s stories, and for the best experience should be read in order, prior to RIDE THE WHIRLWIND. All of them have my highest recommendation.

This is the third time travel mm romance story with these characters. I liked it better than Zach's story of his travels with outlaws, and almost as much as Laurie's story. Here, misfit Maxton has trouble trusting Sheriff Trent, and Trent is fearful of the repercussions of accepting happiness with another man.
This one differs also in the fact that only part of the story is about the journey and the two men getting to know each other. Much of it takes place at the hotel in Trinidad, and how Maxton fits in there.
Typos: "Defuse the tension" is the proper phrase, NOT diffuse. Look it up! There's also an extra word (came in with even two more buckets), and a missing word (give the letters back to Maxton he'd been there).

Fate through time!

How lucky or unlucky can you get? Travel back through time, all the way to 1892. Put in prison for being caught having sex outside a saloon, with a man, and pickpocketing a wallet, and in a place and time where being gay is punishable by hanging.

Maxton has been in and out of foster care and juvie so many times, he has developed a fierce attitude in order to survive. Meeting and befriending Laurie has been a slice of heaven because Laurie accepts him for who he is, surly with a foul mouth most of the time. But despite all these, Laurie never judged him, and accepts him wholly.

Sheriff Trent Harrington is as straitlaced as they come. He is a fair sheriff, he follows the law. But he cannot reveal his secret for fear of being hurt, ridiculed or hang. He’s had these feelings since he was young but he knows that it is considered immoral and illegal by everyone, so he has to keep it hidden.

Will Trent find the courage to be who he really is? Will Maxton be able to accept that he is lovable and that not everyone wants to hurt him. Can these two very lovely sometimes frustrating gentleman find what they were looking for, all this time, in each other?

This is my first time travel series (I have read the two previous books too) and I love it so much! Ms. Jackie North’s amazing story-telling will make you fall in love with her characters, and how she incorporated the events and customs during that time in every aspect of the tale is simply amazing! I am in awe of the research that must have gone into writing an epic like this. Congratulations Ms. Jackie North!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I'm not a massive fan of historical fiction or the old west, but the characters and dialogue in this entertaining time-travel romance was like watching a movie. Maxton is a guy with a penchant for getting himself into trouble, however, he's also practical, tough-minded, and fiesty...and all of these traits serve him well when he's catapulted back in time.

The whole story seems vast, the description of the old time west is first class, just as I would imagine it to be. Maxton is such a mixture, tough and vulnerable, but very needy. Trent is such a gentleman and honourable guy. He's quite a sad character, not knowing how to be who he really is.

The characters are very real, both the MCs and the secondary characters. They've all got their faults, and the story has a fair amount of animosity between some of them. It was interesting how they all worked together to make things happen, and protect one another from discovery.

Overall, this is a romance novel set in the old west. The level of emotional intimacy portrayed for "soulmates" is the theme, as has been the case in the two previous books. You don't have to have read these, to get the gist of where they fit into this particular story, but they are worth a read in their own right

I love time travel romance and I just loved the vibe of this story. The whole series was nice, but this is definitely my favorite. Foul mouthed Maxton, who behaved like a spoiled child in the beginning and Sherif Trent were such a nice couple and even if they had their difficulties finding their HEA, the story progressed naturally, no big misunderstandings, no unnecessary drama, somehow the pace of the story reflected the time (1892) it took place.
I also loved that Maxton was open about the time travel and even if Trent didn't believe him in the beginning, this was a good fundament for their relationship. There is not too much happening but still the story never got boring, great read and 4.5 stars for me!

I didn't think Jackie could make me love any of her characters as much as I love John (Honey From The Lion) but Maxton and Trent yanked my heart out of my chest!! I fell in love with both of these men who in their own ways needed saving...Maxton from his past and Trent from his shame of what he is. The love and acceptance they find in each others arms while traveling to Trinidad, is beautiful. Every word Jackie North writes is like a brush stroke in a painting that sucks you in. You can see the picture so clearly that you can feel the sun on your skin, smell the desert wind, and feel their love in your heart ♡

This was such a sweet and beautiful slide into love. An opposites-attract, slow-burn romance that was exquisite and angsty, but full of so much heart. Just two men fighting nature and their natures, to reconcile who they are against who they think they should be.

I loved the appearances of characters from previous books, but ultimately Maxton and Trent held my heart from beginning to end. Two people you'd never think would be suited, but who were so well-matched.

Jackie's writing is as beautiful as always. Such a lovely read and highly recommended.

This one was not as exciting as the previous book, but it was so emotionally charged that it could still trap me easily. It left some things unresolved and with no clue of their possibility of being resolved (like Trent's sister and what Zack and Layton were to do in Trinidad), but there were no major holes or issues with the plot

4* - this is a solid edition to the series.

Maxton is a bit of a little aggro sh*t - and both him and Zach really got on my tits in this book on multiple occasions. But you can't help but feel sorry for him given his background - especially dealing with Trent's push-pulling.

Overall I enjoyed this better than 3 - but not as much as 2 and 5. Recommended as a KU read.

This was such a fantastic, wild, grab-you-by-the-feels, powerful, enthralling, fascinating, intriguing, amazing, slow burning, more twists and turns than a roller coaster, and totally awesome tale. I was hooked from beginning to end, and I would recommend getting this gem immediately.

5 🌟 story
4 🌟 due to editing issues

Although this is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone book. The details needed are provided along the way, so the reader won't be lost by the back story. The characters are well developed throughout the story, the world building is creative, and the writing style is smoothly done.

Maxton is in a lot of trouble in the present day. As the person who has received not only one, but two letters from the missing Laurie, and now his "friend" Zach has gone missing as well, he's a person of interest to the FBI. That's not including the trouble with the gang he had been working for since he lost his job and the apartment he had shared with Laurie. But as he speeds away from his troubles, a white whirlwind comes and whisks him back in time to 1892, to the exact date of Laurie's last letter. After following his old ways, he finds himself in a jail cell, beaten by the local lawmen for being a catamite and thief.

Trent is the sheriff of Trinidad and has been tasked with collecting a prisoner in Dilia to bring back home and deliver to the intriguing Laurie of the Adeline Hotel. When he arrives, he is angered by the way the brash young man has been treated, but chooses to take him and go before more trouble can brew. He seeks medical treatment for Maxton's arm, and then heeds the doctor's advice to leave town. They take the stagecoach to Villanueva, where they get a room, food, medicine, and new clothes for this strangely dressed young man.

While Trent is out, Maxton needs some fresh air. He ends up on the edge of town where he once again feels off center and fearful. The white whirlwind comes for him, and he is brought back to the future. He doesn't want to be there, and when he spots the white glow, he chases it hoping to get back to the past. Meanwhile, Trent has been looking for the ill-mannered Maxton, trying to figure out how to explain that he has lost him. When he finds Maxton, he is disheveled and ready to be back.

When they arrive at the stagecoach to journey to Trinidad, they find that the coach will not be running for a few days, much to both of their relief. Trent buys horses and supplies, and they set off across the desert toward home. It is obvious from Maxton's behavior that he has been mistreated in the past, and most likely believes that Trent is also going to be that type of person as well. Trent decides that the best way to change his mind is through acts of kindness and patience.

However, when Maxton disappears again, Trent doesn't know what to think. But, he resolves to stay the night in hopes that the rough around the edges Maxton comes to his senses and returns. When he does show up, it's with wild tales that make Trent question his state of mind. But when Maxton makes a request beyond reason, Trent is confused and extremely reluctant to acquiesce. But the fear of the harm Maxton might do to himself allows Trent to do something he doesn't understand. But, in the aftermath, he holds Maxton and tells him he will keep him safe.

When the whirlwind comes for Maxton yet again, Trent is shown the truth of Maxton's fear up close and personal. They have shared more about each other and now he needs to understand exactly what is happening. Together they talk and share a brief moment of intimacy with each other. However, Maxton reverts to his "I don't give a 'care'" attitude when Trent says it will be the only time.

When they reach the town, the two men go their separate ways. Maxton tries to be what Laurie needs him to be to make things work for the men living at the hotel, but he has a hard time changing his ways. He sneaks over to Trent's house, and is invited in for a bit of intimacy, but is rebuffed in the morning. He returns to the hotel where he is reminded that the men at the hotel cannot have controversy in their lives, so he can't be sneaking out at night.

From that point forward, Maxton does his best to keep himself busy in hopes of avoiding his broken heart. Meanwhile, Trent is confused and faced with the same hurt, only his is self-inflicted. With a little intervention from the stoic John, Trent finds himself facing the edge of a metaphorical cliff; does he die a little each day, or take the leap and see if he can fly. In the end, Trent makes up his mind, and though he is terrified, he knows that his dreams are about to come true if he will only let them. When he holds Maxton in his arms, he knows that the sky is blue, and he has made it out of this "closet" Maxton has explained to him. Both men are ready for the happily ever after they have been yearning for their whole lives.

Just a side note: while there are a couple of very sweet romantic interludes, this book is not filled with sexy times, nor would what is included be rated on a "heat" scale. It is sweet, loving, innocent, and yes, intimate, but in no way erotica. If that is what you are looking for, this is not the book for you. But, IMO, having read both, the content of this book was perfect for the story.

Happy reading!

* I received an ARC of this book and I am leaving my honest review. *

Loved it! Maxton is a lonely, hot headed, very defensive guy who's had a hard life. After being shot back in time he is arrested and must be escorted to Trinidad by the sheriff of Trinidad (which is where Maxton's friend Laurie is who has also been shot back in time). Trent the sheriff and Maxton fall in love on their trip through the desert. Trent and Maxton's love story was beautiful but my favorite parts where of John and Layton. The part when Layton (the boy who love horse) sees his old horse that he thought was dead was so damn sweet or when be jumps up to put a knife to Maxton's throat while defending Zach and his beautiful harmonica playing. John is my favorite though, he's so sweet and tender yet commanding and manly. I love John. Can't wait to read the next one....

Man, can Jackie North write! In Ride the Whirlwind, the fourth installment in her Love Across Time series (and a standalone) she creates men as wild and tenuously durable as the harsh desert, which she renders exquisite with her pen.

Much of this series includes three friends sucked into an 1892 time warp. The first to arrive, Laurie, “sends” for his pals via telegraph, Zach (in Wild as the West Texas Wind) and now Maxton. Known as a hellion in prior episodes, Maxton bolts from the present after he attracts police attention with the telegrams from Laurie and Zach, both missing persons. He must run. Involvement by law enforcement has alarmed the gang for whom Maxton commits crimes.

Maxton escapes to 1892 through a whirlwind, but doesn’t arrive at Laurie’s town. Trying to get there, he steals a wallet, commits an act of public indecency, is arrested, and ultimately abused by his jailers. But that’s par for Maxton’s entire life, where only Laurie has shown kindness… though it dawns on Maxton that he may provoke mistreatment with his brash mouth.

Sheriff Trent, a man hiding his “nature,” arrives to transport Maxton. As they ride through the desert for five days, Maxton is chased by the whirlwind that transported him. Trent becomes his protector, the first person besides Laurie to do so. As Maxton notes, “Trent didn’t smile in a satisfied way or look down his nose at Maxton’s capitulation. Instead, he wrinkled his brow and looked a little sorrowful, resigned to the fact that he had to boss Maxton around, but not enjoying it.” Now Maxton realizes other people might also be upstanding.

And Trent, who hadn’t considered the possibility that men could truly love one another, can only marvel at the possibilities. “It was amazing, almost overwhelming that two men could be together in this way, each looking out for the other, each accepting that a man might be frightened or worried. That there was love like this in the world. It was like stepping into the light after years of darkness.”

I’m a sucker for excellent grammar which invisibly smooths our reading experience, and North’s language is so, so much more. Like her hero, I was also transported to another age as she described the town, “The false fronts of the stores were edged with heat waves that rose up like silver ribbons. Everything felt hard baked.” And she captured the desert just as beautifully. “A bit of silence fell, broken only by a lone coyote out there in the low hills, singing to the moon. The thin wail rose and turned like a silver thread reaching up to the heavens, where only the moon and the faint stars around it would know the code to translate the cry of a wild animal.”

Maxton’s whirlwind is almost a character in its own right, often called forth by the man’s worries. “Maxton was going to do his best not to get distracted, not to become swamped by thoughts of getting sucked into the whirlwind.” It’s an excellent parallel to the anxiety disorders that trouble many people with traumatic pasts. Ms. North has provided a window into how the disorder is healed, with gentle steadiness, compassion and a future brighter than one’s past.

The plot meanders lazily, punctured by sharply concerning situations, at the very pace of life itself. Yet this is delivered so purely, I was riveted to every moment. Yes, readers must suspend reality for the concept of time travel. After that, North has used a simpler time to strip away the distractions of our present world and remind readers of what makes us happy – a friendly conversation, a shared meal, a sunset, the show of affection, a listening ear and most importantly, love, in all its varied forms.

Jackie North’s readers are taken on the perfect ride, with scenery, plot, personalities, and underlying messages blending into a transcendent arc of gentle enjoyments. Even her horses are individuals we’d love to know! Do you want to be transported to a hopeful time, when people have room and encouragement to be their best selves? Then hitch a ride on Ms. North’s Ride the Whirlwind!

Maxton & Trent---my new favourite couple

I honestly do not enjoy time travel romance normally. It's either too heartbreaking, cliche, far-fetched to be enjoyable. Maxton and Trent were a couple who gave me a glimpse of hard-fought, hard-won romance that was both a slow burn and a lightening strike. I loved Maxton , the tough loner with a soft interior. I loved Trent, the Sheriff who was respected, upstanding, but dying a little each day on the inside. These men were like unpolished gems you find when you rock hound---so precious but you must exact patience to find them, to know what qualities you are looking for. This book offered a glimpse of the other couples in the previous stories, and that was wonderful, too. 5 Stars

Maxton had always needed someone to belong to and with. Someone to love. Someone all his own. Someone like Trent...

🌪🌪🌪

This is still the continuity from the previous story, this time is the story about Maxton, Another Laurie's best friend, and I’ve been waiting for this story since I ended Zach and Layton’s book!

After Zach went missing mysteriously following what had happened to Laurie, Max then receiving another letter from Laurie that sent from the past which told that Zach now lived with him at Trinidad.

In the present time Maxton's life always get into troubles. Finding his life is in danger, he then decided to runaway. But on his way he’d been swept by the whirlwind and thrown into the past.
Confused and disoriented, Maxton then got into trouble and jailed.
Then come Trent, a sheriff from Trinidad who brought the message from Laurie and had been assigned to take him to the place where Laurie lived.
Their journey back to where Laurie lived was not easy, both Max and Trent must face lots of obstacles. With the baggage and insecurity they both carried from their past and with the mysterious clouds and whirlwind that always ‘chased’ Maxton and want to throw him back to the future had made this book become another interesting and consuming book from Jackie North.

The two MCs come with their unique characters and the way the author describe Maxton's anxiety and afraid and Trent's dilemmas, and their slow changing feelings and deep connection are enough to make you glued to the story until the last page.

This series become more and more addicted since I start the first book. Now with all these three best buddies finally reunited again in the past I assume the story about this trio finally come to its end. BUT….will this series also come to its end? Well, don’t think so. Because I’m sure the author still has more unique time travel story on her mind!

Last but not least, if you a time travel lovers like me, I’ll recommended not only this book, but this whole series to you! Trust me you’ll love all the story in this series!

"Pain holds me still, holds me here, in this year. It keeps me grounded, and keeps me from the whirlwind," said Maxton. "Just like the smell of roses—"

"Roses?" asked Trent. "Yeah," said Maxton. "I smelled roses, and knew I'd made it back to the right time, to you—"

"I won't let it take you," said Trent. "Focus on where we are, and where we are going. Listen to the sound of the wind on the river, the faraway wails of coyotes singing to the moon. Be with me now, be with me."

Oh, boy! Where, oh where do I start? In the interest of full disclosure, I have been looking forward to this book for months!! I was so excited to finally get to read it and my expectations were so high it’s not even funny.

That being said, did Ride the Whirlwind live up to my expectations? You bet it did!!! Jackie North more than delivered in the fourth book of the Love Across Time series!! We finally got to read Maxton’s story and boy was it a “whirlwind”!

Both Maxton and Trent are so lovable and they both have such unhappy pasts that leave them both a bit jaded with people and worried about how people will treat them. Maxton’s more concerned with being betrayed and hurt, while Trent is more concerned with who he is (to a point, as he’s lacking a definition or description to give himself) and how the people around him will judge him. But by the end, they were able to see the brightness and honesty and love of each other and find their happy ending. And I was so happy for them!

This one varied a bit - and I do mean a bit - in its presentation from books 2 and 3, and while I was thrown for a few chapters, once it was explained what was going on, it made complete sense. Jackie North has a way with words that keeps me sucked into any story she writes, and this one was no exception. I felt like I was in 1892 with Maxton, much like I did with Laurie in Honey from the Lion and Zach in Wild as the West Texas Wind. I was so happy to be back in this little world she’s created with both new and familiar characters that I had to force myself to slow down so I didn’t read the whole book in one sitting. (I did that with Honey from the Lion and it was totally worth being exhausted at work the next day.)

And the only complaint I had about the book was that it ended!! I would love to know more of what happens with Trent and Maxton (not to mention Laurie and John and Zach and Layton!) and how they move forward together, but the story is complete the way it is. I’m just that greedy. :) And who knows? If we’re lucky, maybe we’ll get more stories in the frontier town of Trinidad in the year 1892. We can always hope.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves time travel stories, love stories, or just stories written with beautiful language. In fact, I highly recommend all of Jackie North’s stories. I can’t wait until she writes more. I hadn't even finished the book before I pre-ordered the final copy! I suggest you do, too.

I received an ARC of this book in return for my honest and unbiased opinion.

“Ride the Whirlwind” peaked my interest and when I started reading I had to stop and find the stories for two other characters: Lawrence “Laurie” Quinn from “Honey from the Lion” and Zach from “Wilds as the West Texas Wind”. So I dived in and grabbed the first two books of the series and gave them a read.
“Honey from the Lion” introduces Lawrence “Laurie” Quinn and John Henton who get this mystical series started. “Wild as the West Texas Wind” brings Zach to the forefront along with Layton Blue and the Ketcham Gang.
“Ride the Whirlwind” brings the troubled, Maxton Barnett into the search for his friend Laurie. With Laurie’s support and encouragement Maxton’s troubled life had turned around. Now, he’s lost everything with the disappearance of his friend Laurie and is on the run from cops and a dangerous gang. There’s nothing left for him but the letters from Laurie who disappeared under some very strange events. Maxton on the run and in search of Laurie, finds himself in the forces of a whirlwind. It’s obvious to him he can’t out run the law when he finds himself in jail in the town of Dalia. Little does he know he’s about to be turned over to Sheriff Trent Harrington. Maxton has to decide if he should run from the Sheriff that could lead him to Laurie or face the whirlwind that’s coming for him.
Jackie North brings the year 1892 to life with her scenic and wonderous descriptions, developing towns, the beauty of the landscape and the harshness of the storms of Colorado. Through the forces of nature, Laurie, Zach and Maxton have to adjust to the ways of 1892 and be very careful not to reveal what they know about the future. They each will meet men: John Henton, outlaw Layton Blue and Sheriff Trent Harrington. Each one of these six men have different personalities, hopes and fears that make for interesting pairs. All of them also have to be careful in keeping their secret. The one secret Laurie, Zach and Maxton have sworn to keep is how they got to 1892.
I hope Jackie North has plans to bring more stories for “A Love Across Time” series. I would like to see what the future holds for Laurie, Zach and Maxton. I highly recommend this series for anyone who likes time travel.
