ANNIHILATION IS A BUTTON PRESS AWAY

Barrett Mason is done with violent terrorists, revenge-driven maniacs and power-hungry elites. He’s bought a new office. He’s opened a thriving investigations firm with his wife. He’s planning a bright future with his adopted daughter.

But carefully laid plans are easily blown away.

Colonel Huff turns up with a mission: he needs Barrett’s help to knock down a dangerous terrorist cell—one which has kidnapped a top US nuclear arms expert. And rejecting Huff’s plea means leaving the world’s most dangerous nuclear secrets in the hands of people itching to use them.

Action packed series

Action is fine but something about
Barrett Mason that makes this work.
All his foibles and misdeeds and passion
for survival give us a flawed character
that we root for and because we root
for him the implausible action is rationalized
as believable.

Good Thriller

Barrett Mason finds himself involved in trying to rescue the Deputy Secretary of the US Department of Energy. Outgunned and outmanned, he wins the first battle, but the war takes a strange turn. Lots of action. ENJOY!

This is book six in the Barrett Mason series. He, His wife Libby and adopted daughter Kajel have fled the USA and those trying to track Barrett down. He has had enough of dealing with maniacs, terrorists and power-hungry people in power. They have opened up an office in Brussels and Libby and Barrett are hiring out their services to any who can pay. The new business is being called Mason and Mason and is a Private Investigation business, which uses the skills both have gained from their working lives over the years. There is also Pierre, who follows along with Kejal, sort of a bodyguard, friend and companion for Kejal.

Barrett gets an unexpected visit from his old CO and friend, Colonel Huff, who asks for his help with a problem. A terrorist cell calling themselves Red Star, have apparently kidnapped a top nuclear power expert, the Deputy Secretary of Energy who is called Anna and is someone Huff has a previous link to. Not that he lets Barrett know this to start with! Red Star are thought to be linked to one of the enemies of the US and one of those close to the President want him to take serious action against this foe, without the actual truth of who is responsible.

Others have been put in place, by unknown people with power, to follow and watch Huff and Barrett, and would like nothing better than to have Anna, Huff and Barrett to be collateral damage of this terrorist group. There is quite a twist with this hidden camp, the location of the kidnapped security expert and that they were given clues about. A sudden attack leaves Libby under danger and Kejal having to save her. Their friendship with Pierre allows them to disappear, especially after the news of her husband’s death, but she won’t believe it until she checks out matters herself. This brings her into contact with an old acquaintance of Huff and Barrett, but whose side she is on, is questionable.

The threat of nuclear secrets getting into the wrong hands, is the main premise of this story and is twisted by those with a high level of power, who have their own agenda of events and would love to have a new war to be fought, to help make the US great again! But, somewhat of a twisted idea, with who knows what chance of success and the question of who is the real power behind the plan. This leads the Mason family awry and into danger all over again. Another rip-roaring adventure and very realistic tale of terrorism, kidnapping, gunfights and the struggle for a fresh start. An interesting read, with lots of excitement, intrigue and a bunch of great characters. I really enjoyed seeing what all the Mason family were up to now and I can’t wait for more in the series to come. I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

As an introductory work to Stewart Matthews I found the pace of the novel to be consistent all the way through the novel. The action kept on rolling in whether it be directed to our hero Barrett Mason or any number of other cast members that made this a joy to read.
From the safety and locale of nits new office in Belgium, to the mountains of Spain, to the political headquarters in the USA, Washington DC, the Barrett and his team battle almost insurmountable odds and absurd circumstances to stymie a plot to begin a new land war. See how Barrett, Carolina, Huff and the rest of the team become the world's last line of defence in thwarting the scheme, but the ending will leave you wanting more.
Excellent work Stewart, I look forward to reading many more of your novels.

Matthews continues his Barrett Mason series with #6, Red Star, which is another great one.

Barrett, his wife, Libby, and his adopted daughter Kejal are now living in Brussels while running his new private investigation company. Unfortunately, predicting another "adventure", his former boss Huff shows up offering Barrett a new job. Huff relates that the Deputy Secretary of Energy was kidnapped by a supposed communist group in Spain. Then Huff and Barrett are off on their mission to find and rescue the woman.

Their adventure has many surprises that unfold in one great story that you need to read.

Besides, I love this series even though Mason and I are native-born Texans.

Wowza! The BEST Barrett Mason. EVER! This series keeps getting better and better! I devoured this one! The topic was timely: the story believable; an action-packed adrenaline rush right up to the very end! I can SO see this as already happened... not that we'd ever know...

I received an ARC of this book from the author and I am thrilled to be able to give you my honest review!
