A fast moving adventure full of action, suspense and surprises.
Biography I am descendent of a long line of Dorset clay miners and have chased my family tree back to the 16th century in the Isle of Purbeck. I have been a public speaker at conferences for most of my career in the Aerospace and Automotive industries and was one of the founders of a successful games company back in the 1990’s. Now in my sixties, and living in the Netherlands Antilles, I finally got to write the stories I had going around in my head for many years. Thanks to inspiration from the great sea authors like Alexander Kent, Dewey Lambdin, Patrick O’Brian and Dudley Pope I was finally able to put digit to keyboard and start writing the Dorset Boy series. I make no apologies that I write for myself. The stories emerge as I write and I am often surprised by the twists and turns that they take.
I have really enjoyed this series. It has a great mixture of intrigue, action, domestic and historical events. I look forward to future events.. From a land locked fan on the Eastern side of the Rockies in Canada!
As a cat burglar, assassin, enlightened HMS ship captain and benevolent landowner Marty is quite different from a typical King's Officer during the "Age of Fighting Sail". His adventures are many, varied and interesting. Factor in his war princess bride, now the mother of four, and you might think you were in a modern superhero graphic novel. All this before partnering with Sydney Smith a real-life iconoclastic admiral makes this series very interesting, exciting and quite different. In this book, they return royal jewelry, thwarting enemy spy networks and wreaking havoc in the Mediterranean against various and sundry French, Italian and Spanish enemies. On to the Peninsular War where they will add the brilliant "Sepoy General" Arthur Wellesley to their team as they battle Napolean and his minions.
Before you read this one, please realize it is a continuation of a series: you will need to read the series in order or the characters / plot may not make much sense to you. This isn't your typical historical fiction novel as it focuses in on the continued life and travails of a young man. There is good interplay between the characters and the author certainly knows how to tell a story. You will also get a taste of old-fashioned ship battles as well as a little bit of a history lesson. I am reading each of these in order, going to the next one immediately and can’t seem to put them down. I picked this up for “free” with my Kindle Unlimited subscription vs. the regular price of $3.99 – I certainly received more than $3.99 of entertainment value and I am sure you will, also.
This is a" ripping yarn" type story, and although the author tries to get the history right, sometimes he comes so close it is painful. In this book, set in the first years 19th century, he has ships of the Italian Navy. Italy did not exist as a county until 1861. He could have chosen one of the states that unified to form Italy. Having said this, it is an easy read that does not require much effort. Some of the language is a little uneasy, "gifted" why not given or gave?
Outstanding series about a young Navy officer in the Napoleanic wars. Adventure, derring-do, intrigue, this series has it all! Besides, its a painless way of learning the history of the time. Highly recommended
The author continues to spin this tale of adventure and chaos. The Royal Navy can’t do everything to achieve results and so they call on their best to take care of the tricky problems…….
