The Crime Beat is a nine-episode novella series, designed to be read in orderandin its entirety. Although each episode tells a complete portion of the story, the nine novellas--read together--weave one unforgettable tale.
Once a journalist in New York, A.C. Fuller now writes stories at the intersection of media, politics, and technology. Before he began writing full time, he was an adjunct professor of journalism at NYU and an English teacher at Northwest Indian College.
He lives with his wife, two children, and two dogs near Seattle. For a free copy of one of A.C.'s books, check out: http://www.acfuller.com/readerclub/

Somehow, I thought with the title, The Crime Beat, I would be getting a true crime story. The genre is mystery / thriller and it is fiction. The main characters are an unlikely duo. Jane is a crime beat reporter who is a widow. Rob is a former marine, cop, separated from his wife, and now tracking a serial killer conspiracy.
Jane and Rob meet near the first crime in the series, set in New York. They work together to find the first killer, but it is not the only killer. Rob has information which makes them think there will be 9 assassinations. Next, they find information with nine locations. I am seeing you will want to read the series in order and the entire series may be more like one really long book broken into episodes.
Jane and Rob get followed by someone in DC and they need to get under the radar so they head to the next location, Miami. They take public transportation and pay with cash.
Knowing they need to work fast, they split up their research. Jane looks for high profile, wealthy candidates who might be the target. Rob tracks down someone who might be able to give him the word on the street. They do a great job but things don't go as planned. Now what do they do?
Each episode is relatively short, and they continue to gather more information, suspense and action. I keep wondering who they can trust because the list seems very short. Politics, cops, and news media all seem to have corruption. Narration: This narrator is one I've enjoyed in a similar genre. Her male and female voices were comfortably appropriate. I enjoyed listening at my usual 1.5x speed.
Well, I'm pretty much addicted to this series. It has all the appeal of a well-done TV show with a continuing storyline throughout the whole season and those really delicious cliff-hangers that make you immediately queue up the next episode even though it's 11pm.
That's how I felt when I reached the end of this book and read the preview of book 4. My family will be back soon from their Thanksgiving evening movie outing (and I really love that this book was just the right length for me to read from start to finish while they were away!!), so I probably won't get to keep bingeing.
But I'd like to. And I intend to do so tomorrow.
(Content note for the more sensitive followers of my reviews: this is a thriller series. It has thriller tropes and content. There's a smidgen of language, there's violence and peril and crime, there's references to some pretty bad crimes/criminals. None of it has risen to a level that has viscerally bothered me (one bit in this book is the exception, come to think of it), but that's me *personally*. Read at your own discretion.) ;)
At first you think these are a series of novels with the same characters. Then you find that basically they are one novel, delivered chapter by chapter. A tiresome way of reading what essentially is only one book. But then again, it's fairly well written, the characters are attractive, their quirks are intriguing, and the plot is well thought out, or so it seems.
This Series Has Hooked Me! Wasn't sure about this series when I first started, but it has reeled me in, hook, line, and sinker, and I can't wait for the next chapter. Short, fast-paced books filled with action and two likable and interesting protagonists, make for some binge-worthy reading. Already reading Book 4 in Las Vegas... On to the next one!
Plot- or character-driven? A mix Strong character development? Yes Loveable characters? Yes Diverse cast of characters? Yes Flaws of characters a main focus? Yes
★★★★☆: This installment gets a slightly better rating. The plot is getting intense, and there are unanswered questions that make me want to read the next episode.
excellent writing, but you must realize this is a series of two people after one killer. They are basically moving from one city to another on the chase. I liked the first three but then moved on. A.C. Fuller is a remarkable writer and story teller.
Book 3 was good but not great. Seemed to lose some of the tightness of the first 2 books and felt rushed. Still enjoyable however, and I'll keep reading the series!
Marcode De Santis, hired assassin is in Miami. But who is the next target. Cole and Warren try to find out before the target dies. The story conbtinues with this part
I could not put this book down! I loved how descriptive the book was and how I felt like I was watching a movie. Fuller is doing a better job than ever at describing characters and scenery. Can’t wait to read the next book
More surprises! What an exciting new series from an outstanding author.! Don't miss a beat. Start at the beginning and get onboard. We are all in for a thrill ride that takes us to several cities. I for one cannot wait for episode 4 and 5. Each book adds more depth to the characters and twists to the story. Who or what is really behind the assassinations and could it be justified? And, who is gunning after Warren and Cole as they attempt to find answers? This is a "must read" to see where things begin to add up and/or end up...I received an arc and this is my honest and voluntary review
Our duo race to Miami to try to prevent another death. The problem is, they don’t know who the target is! They pick up a tail themselves and are left wondering what the reason was for it. We still don’t know who this shadowy group is, or how big it is, or even its purpose although they did add something into the mix in this book. We did find out more about the individual who committed the NewYork murders and the person’s backstory was very interesting. There appears to be a subplot developing which may or may not be directly connected to the sniper attacks. As usual there were some interesting plot twists and a big surprise at the end.
"I'm the next Pit Bull, baby." This, the third installment of this gripping thriller, sees the journalist and ex-cop team of Cold and Warren in Miami where they believe another assassination will occur. They are there to stop it, and catch the killer. Trouble is, they don't get know the identity of either, nor any these killings are being carried out. Suspenseful, exciting, characters emerging with greater depth as each subsequent book appears, this is a must read book in a definitely must read series conspiracy, political background, realism, thriller, and written by the masterful A.C.Fuller: it has it all.
It’s the turn of this series’ third inning and tension is tighter as the heat of Miami reflects the heating up of the hunt—for a sniper, for an organization, for a way to stop the carnage—and for a personal answer to Cole’s pain and darkness. There are a big mystery conspiracy and a bunch of little conspiracies roiling the waters. First woman victim—this is an all-inclusive series full of diversity—and another nail-biting chase. I really enjoy the realities—the food, the rapper Pitbull (go listen…he’s great), the clothes, even the humidity. Hurry with #4!!
Really good story and the author tells you upfront even tho each is a stand alone story-the series is all connected. I'm intrigued enough to want to read the next. Just need to know who and why the assassinations are happening. Cole and Warren work really well together even though they have their own challenges. The story moves fast, keeps your interest and wanting more. Can't wait now to read Washington Beat.
The third instalment finds Cole and Warren in Miami, trying to prevent the next victim. As each city brings more clues, the mystery continues to deepen. Amazing writing, great characters, I can’t recommend it enough. A fantastic series, to be continued in another city.....I can’t wait to see where we go next!
I've enjoyed the first two novellas in the new series by A.C. Fuller. I've read all his works. I actually like the length of each book and the way they hook into each other. Perfect for reading in one afternoon or evening.!
great read... of course another episode in this fun series.... this is like an HBO limited series.... you keep getting deeper and good stuff, but then it ends, for the next episode... book 4... i'm excited
