Twenty of the 23 chapters in this book give a short pictorial summary of lost lines and stations on the London Midland Region of British Railways, amongst them many familiar from similar books, and a good number of more unregarded lines, particularly in the Midlands and North West of England, whose inclusion here makes this volume well worth seeking out.
Lines/stations covered are: Broad St station, London; Great Central Main Line; Banbury to Buckingham and Verney Junction; Bedford St Johns, Bedford to Hitchin and Leighton Buzzard Narrow Gauge; Seaton to Uppingham (Rutland); Glenfield Tunnel, Leicester; Mansfield; Burton Brewery railways; Uttoxeter to Leek and beyond; Buxton; Manchester stations; Liverpool Exchange and Birkenhead Woodside; Bacup; Morecambe Bay; Fleetwood; Yorkshire Dales; Garside to Hawes; Penrith to Keswick and Workington; North Wales coast; Anglesey; Aberglaslyn.
The format means that the narrative is accompanied by multiple photographs, many rather small in size, but that is a minor criticism in an excellently written and presented book.
