THE NEW GATE is a manga adapted from a light novel series of the same name. If we were to go with the choice of the title, this series, both manga and novel, break one of the common tropes of light novels having super long titles that carry synopses in them. However, the premise of this story is pretty standard for an isekai manga where in the protagonist is transported in to a game world.

The main character, Shin, is a high human character transported flesh and blood into a game. He's ridiculously overpowered. As a high level character, his stats are beyond the norm, not mention, having an item box filled with high class equipment, each a deus ex machina waiting to happen.

So far, this story is nothing spectacular, but the world building is decent enough to be interesting. For an overpowered character that defies the common sense of his new world, Shin has a surprisingly cautious mindset, preferring to keep a low profile and skills hidden. It's pretty much what one would do if marooned in a strange world with an alien culture. It may appear to be a generic isekai, the execution and storytelling is solid. It also helps that Shin is a likeable character.

For a first volume, it holds promise.

The New Gate is a series that follows an old chestnut and adds a trope alongside it. I assume the book is set in the recent future, or at least enough for Virtual Reality headsets to be popular. In the story proper, the New Gate is a video game where the players can't log out. In itself, that is simple enough. Sword Art Online followed that idea. Volume one is where the series kicks off.

The book's opening covers the end of the Death game, where one player conquers the requirements, he defeats the final boss. The players log out, and the main character is sent to the game world 500 years in the future. The Great Log Out has a historical basis in this world, and the main character, a man called Shin, searches for a means to return home.

As I said, the premise is simple enough. When Shin defeats the final boss, he gains transcendental powers. Since he is Japanese, he wants to live peacefully and avoid ruffling feathers. Shin tries to come across as ordinary, but even trapped in a video game universe, he has skills and techniques that give him away.

The series started in 2016. I don't know what else was out there at that time, so I can't tell you how original it was.

Thanks for reading my review, and see you next time.

It was pretty good. Enjoyable little Isekai, that has its share of tropes but also has some fresh ideas. Sure the character is over powered and almost every woman character given a name falls in love with him. The premise starts off similar to your .Hack/Sword Art Online type of story.....vr mmorpg turns into a death game. The MC beats the bad guy and everyone can log off the death game finally. MC watches everyone logs off but before he does a door at the back of the boss room opens up and he wakes up, 500 years in the future. Apparently when players made their characters they also made a companion character, and so 500 years in the world have past since all the players logged off. In that time being the NPCs and companions have built a thriving society in the world. Thus over powered MC starts a new journey to find his companion and figure out why he is still trapped in the world.

So yeah, enjoyable enough to binge read the whole manga series.

To be honest, I don't think I'd continue with this series if I hadn't of already read the novels it's based on.

Set in a post-VRMMO death game (technically it opens with Shin clearing the game), Shin finds a door and awakens with new powers and is trapped in a world that seems to be the VRMMO, but is more realistic.

Moving from the novel to the manga format, it felt like it became "blander" with it feeling more like a generic fantasy where an OP MC gets surrounded by beautiful, mostly buxom waifus. Don't get me wrong, that's kind of what it was from the start, but when I was reading it as text it felt less "MC stares at boobs" and a bit more fantasy-action travelogue.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this series, I Picked it up cause the cover looked really interesting and as an isekai lover I couldn't say no.

I am really liking the start, nothing overly new In terms of the genre but one it's early days and two it's still got me really intrigued on what comes next!

Vol. 1-8 (Ongoing series)

Among all your typical OP hero in another world stories, this one is pretty decent. But while it's good enough to be entertaining, unfortunately, it's not enough to get excited about it.
