A page-turning, gritty gangland crime novel perfect for fans of Martina Cole and Kimberley Chambers.
Grace Sumner turned her back on the Liverpool gangland scene, determined to raise her baby daughter Belle away from a life of crime and killings. She might have been the boss once, but now Grace just wants to live a normal life…
Until she learns that her eldest son Jake has got himself mixed up in some bad business. In over his head and out of control, Jake needs pulling back in line, before he gets himself killed. But with Grace gone, no one can tell Jake what to do. Which means only one thing for Grace…
Caz Finlay lives in Liverpool with her husband, two children, and a grumpy dog named Bert. She has two BA Hons in Criminal Justice and Community Justice.
A Probation Officer for fourteen years, Caz has always been fascinated by the psychology of human behaviour and the reasons people do the things they do.
However, it was the loss of her son in 2016 which prompted her to rediscover her love of writing and write her first novel, The Boss.
Grace Sumner was the undisputed queen of the Liverpool underworld, until she turned her back on it 18 months ago - but now she’s back!
Her only son Jake has been running the family business back in Liverpool, but when Grace receives a call telling her that Jake is in trouble and the business is going down the pan, she realises that she must return. Even more worrying however, her sources indicate that at the rate that Jake is making enemies, he’s in danger of losing his life altogether, and she concedes that the peaceful life she’s been living in the secluded village of Harewood, in Leeds, together with her baby daughter Belle, will have to end, at least until she’s sorted out business in Liverpool.
Once again Grace is drawn into a world of crime and violence - a world she deliberately withdrew from, but with Jake in over his head, and with old adversaries circling to take control of her old patch, she won’t take this lying down - nobody messes with Grace Sumner!
A gritty and gripping gangland tale, this is a great follow up to The Boss, and Caz Finlay is definitely becoming an author to watch out for.
* I was invited to read Back in the Game by the publisher and have given an honest unbiased review in exchange *
Grace Summer is happy living in the countryside with her daughter Belle. Grace gets a phone call telling her that her son, Jake needs her help. SomG4ance finds herself back in Liverpool and the life she had left behind. Jake needs to toe the line. Grace is taking a secret back to Liverpool with her, one she Hope's no o e will find out.
Grace came out of retirement to sort her son and the family business. She calls in the help of the w, who we met in the first book The Boss. I was sucked in from the first page. All the old faces were back along with a few new ones. There's a few sub stories running side by side. 2ithnsharacters youmwill love, like and despise, you'll find yourself quickly turning the pages, wanting to find out more and rooting for Grace and her gang. I loved The Boss, the first book in this series but Back In The Game is even better. How Caz Finlay will top this book, I don't know. I just hope we don't have too long to wait to find out. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I highly recommend this book and series. You won't be disappointed.
I would like to thank NetGalley, HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter and the author Caz Finlay for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
After leaving her life previously In Liverpool, Grace is now happy with her daughter Belle living out in the country That is until she receives a call from an old acquaintance telling her that her son Jake is in trouble and she needs to get back to Liverpool as soon as possible. Jake is now running his dads, Nathan‘s old club and he's starting to make enemies.
Once back she soon starts to realise that her son is trying to step into his dads shoes but along the way has upset some faces in Liverpool and they want him gone. Grace knows she’s going to need to call on the Carters to help her sort all this out once and for all.
But Grace has her own secrets that must not come out, but she's also very good at finding other people including well known gangster Bobby White
And people like Bobby always had a skeleton or two in their closets. Little did Grace know, Bobby had a whole graveyard
I loved everything about her first book The Boss it had exactly what I look for in this gritty thriller genre. So I was really eager to get my hands on a copy of this one and believe me it didn’t disappoint. Fast moving I loved the characters, their secrets and once again the twists that you don't see coming. Graces relationship with Michael Carter was great. I'm looking forward to her next book which is going to tell us more about that Carter family.
Considering this is only her second book Caz Finlay is going places ….
**ARC provided by Netgalley in return for an honest review***
Back in the Game is the second instalment of Gangland Grit Lit in the Bad Blood series and this time the author takes the danger level up a notch. Grace Sumner decides to up sticks with her eight-month-old daughter, Belle, and move for a quieter life to the sleepy village of Harewood, Leeds, leaving behind a city she has both bad and good memories of and her son Jake who is currently managing his fathers night club business - The Blue Rooms - since Nathan's passing. Soon her peace is shattered as she gets word that Jake is being harassed by local gangsters and she feels she has no choice but to move back and sort it out. What scares her more is her sources suggested Jake appears to have made enemies in the gangland underworld since she left eighteen months ago. But Grace has a huge secret she is not ready to reveal to anyone so she must be careful not to let her wider family see Belle no matter the cost. Little does she know that other family members also have some skeletons in their closet...
This is a captivating and addicting read from the start with plenty of exciting developments and a real sense of danger which creates a palpably tense atmosphere. It isn't necessary to have read the first book before diving into this but it is preferable as it is character-based so you get the best from it if you've already read the first book, The Boss. It's a violent, action-packed and rather gruesome read at times with a tonne of grit to the storyline and a cast of characters who are engaging and interesting. Well written with drama aplenty, twists that knock you sideways and a spectacular conclusion, this is a superb thriller which I can see gaining the author the recognition she deserves. As always with most gangland thrillers, the plot contrasts the tight-knit family and their bonds with the ruthless big crime bosses who are only interested in making money. A cracking, fast-paced crime thriller with secrets galore ready to unravel. Many thanks to One More Chapter for an ARC.
This is a gritty, gangland thriller set in Liverpool. After leaving her life in Liverpool, Grace is now happy with her baby daughter, living in the country. That is until she receives a call telling her that her son Jake is getting involved in stuff he shouldn’t, and she needs to sort him out. Grace left Jake running a club and she tried to ensure he didn’t get involved in the life she led but it seems he’s been pulled in. Once back she realises that Jake is trying to step into his father’s shoes but he’s not managing it well. Grace has her own secret that must not come out, but she knows it’s only a matter of time. This is a gripping read with just the right mix of violence and threats for a gangland thriller. Thanks to Harper Collins UK/One more chapter and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
It was so good to revisit Grace and be Back in the Game...
Grace returns to Liverpool after being alerted by a former business contact that her son, Jake may be in some trouble if left on his own. He's recently taken over running the family business. He's young and hasn't quite learned how to play "all the angles" yet. Grace has no choice but to leave her safe haven where she's been living with her daughter, Belle, and return to Liverpool and the life she left behind.
This is the second book in the series and I really enjoyed seeing the previous characters and "catching up." Sometimes, the subsequent books in a series fall short, but that definitely isn't the case here. I enjoyed Back in the Game every bit as much as The Boss. Caz Finlay reeled me in from page one and I barely came up for air until the last page. It was a satisfying read. You get some questions answered, see some people get "what they deserve," learn some new secrets and shed a few tears. This book delivers a well formed storyline that keeps the reader immersed. I look forward to the next one in the series!
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a Reader's Copy. I voluntarily chose to review it and the opinions contained within are my own.
The second book by this author set in the Liverpool underworld, Grace Sumner lives in the sleepy village of Harwood Leeds living the quiet life and gets a call from Liverpool about her son Jake running his fathers nightclub the blue room. She didn't want to go back and had her daughter Belle to think about, her son was been a fool and she couldn't ignore this. Even though she will have to face the Carter's she had a well kept secret that will eventually come out. Oh boy I loved this book, I loved The Boss but this was twice as good, so much action going on. This author knows how to pull you into all the characters, some you either like or hate. Full of twists and turns and secrets unfold, and right through to the end that makes this book just perfect, nothing more I can say, but pick up and read it.
Now this was a book i was so looking forward to reading and i must say Caz Finlay nailed it.Grace Sumner left Liverpools gangland scene wanting to raise her daughter Belle away from the violence, crime and killings. After being told her son Jake was in trouble she is drawn back to keep him safe and knowing she has to keep her secret from those she loves will be hard. This book is gritty and gripping i didn't want it to end.I look forward to the next book from this BRILLIANT Author 5*
Even though I have yet to read the first book in this series, I jumped at the opportunity to read this one, Back in the Game.
Deciding to leave the City of Liverpool where she has collected many good and bad memories, Grace Sumner and her eight-month-old daughter, Belle are moving for a quieter life to the sleepy village of Harewood, Leeds. Jake, her son remains in Liverpool as he is currently managing his father's night club business - The Blue Rooms. When she hears that Jake is being harassed by local gangsters, Grace feels she must move back and keep her eye on events. But Jake appears to have made a few enemies since she left...
Back in the Game has bucket loads of excitement and a real sense of danger. With its gritty storyline and characters, the atmosphere is undeniably tense. There's plenty of action and the violence makes for rather a gruesome read at times, but the fantastic writing and huge amount of intrigue kept those pages turning. Grace is a feisty, strong female and I found myself often cheering her on. With drama aplenty, twists that bowled me over and a mind-boggling ending, this is a superb gangland thriller that you won't want to miss. I'm already looking forward to reading book #3 in the series, Head of the Firm!
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from One More Chapter via NetGalley and this review is my unbiased opinion.
I have something of a soft spot for this genre of book. I love strong willed women and Grace is a brilliant character who is strong but vulnerable at the same time. Having got away from the gangland scene, it doesn’t last for long when she returns to see what sort of a mess her son Jake has got himself into.
The storyline had me on the edge of my seat, literally. I have to admit I’ve never been one for violence and one thing these books tend to have in them is a fair bit of it. Luckily this is an author who gives just enough without going into detail, making those parts easier to read.
It was good to catch up with certain characters as well as getting to know others better. Some made my blood boil and I found myself wanting to scream at Grace to watch her back as doing well for yourself in that sort of industry gets you a lot of enemies. This has unlikable characters in an abundance and I couldn’t wait to see if they got their comeuppance or not.
Back in the Game was a page turning, gut clenching read where my heart was in my mouth more than a few times. When I wasn’t reading the book, all I was doing was thinking about it. I’m hoping there is more to come as I am to addicted to these characters lives as well as the criminal world that they live in, feeding us fear and excitement in equal measure.
My thanks to NetGalley and One More Chapter for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.
Absolutely enjoyed reading 'Back in the Game'. It gripped me from start to finish and one can always tell when i am gripped, as i can sail through a whole book in little over a day. I've always enjoyed gangster books and have read many by Martina Cole and Roberta Kray. Caz Finlay in my view, is just as good!
I loved the character of Grace. She is a very devoted mother and so much so, she is there to help her son by leaving her home in Leeds where she was trying to lead a normal life, to go back to Liverpool. Such a strong character when she needs to be.
This is the second book that i have read by Caz Finlay, the first being 'The Boss'. Another excellent book! I can highly recommend and am looking forward to reading more books by this author.
My thanks to Netgalley and the Publishers for my copy. This is my honest review, which i have voluntarily given.
Grace is trying to live her life with her baby daughter, Belle, when she gets a call that her son, Jake, has taken over the businesses she left behind and is getting out of control. Grace slides into Jake’s business on the pretence of being bored so she can keep an eye on him. Soon old adversaries think that Jake and Grace are open game! Can they survive the torment of violence they are facing? This is the second book in the series and now I have finished it I am going straight to read the first! It was gripping, violent and definitely up there with other gangster crime titles! Absolutely loved it. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
I fell into this brilliant book headfirst & stayed there right until the very last sentence. I hadn't read the previous so wasn't sure how I'd get on. It made no difference & I was able to follow the story perfectly, although I have now bought previous. The setting was spot on, characters were likeable or hateable, whichever way you are supposed to feel about them. The story it's self worked really well with lots of sub stories running along side. This author to me is definitely as good as Mandasue, Martina & Kimberley. Congratulations, I'm definitely excited to read some more.
We're right slap back in the game, this is the second instalment in the Bad Blood quadrilogy and was equally as good as the first #TheBoss, it can be read as a standalone but my own personal preferrance is to read from the beginning, I like to read the background of the characters, it helps me understand their idiosyncrasies and just where they fit or don't.
After her antics in the last book (no spoilers here) Grace Sumner moved away to Harewood Leeds, wanting a quieter lifestyle for her baby daughter. Jake, Grace's son was running his dad Nathans night club The Blue Room in Liverpool but as is the way in that lifestyle word trickled back to her that Jake had been making more than a few enemies and was in serious danger. Finding no other option Grace has to slip back into her business persona, to do her utmost to fix it sooner rather than later to allow her to get back to Bella
I do actually like Grace, it's not a life she ever wanted but if she must be a boss she prefers to do business her that you find yourself siding with the villan but Grace has this way about her, . plethora of characters gritty violent lifestyle although there are parts with an element of violence but I didn't find it to be written in a gratuitous fashion.
Caz Finlay is definitely one to watch out for in my opinion is she's a upcomning author and we should keep an eye on her. if you read authors like Anna Smith, Kimberly Chambers and Emma Tallon then you''ll enjoy her books begin with #TheBoss to get maximum enjoyment.
Read for an honest review. Thank you Ms Finlay, @Netgalley and HarperCollins UK One More Chapter
I love a series where you can watch the characters grow. Grace Carter has certainly done that ! I had read the first in this series a while back and did not realize there were more! I am already reading into the night the next installment. Really enjoying these well written books .t
Read this book in under 24 hours. I cannot get enough of this series. Racing through each title but at the same time I don’t want it to end! Fantastic series
Any book that claims to be one for fans of Martina Cole grabs my attention. This is my first book from Caz Finlay, so I feel I should read the first book too.
Grace Sumner has turned her back on the underground Liverpool gangland scene, determined to raise her baby daughter Belle away from a life of crime, skullduggery and killings. She was the boss once, but now just wants to live a normal life away from it all and has moved to Leeds.
Grave then learns that her oldest son Jake has managed to get himself mixed up in a life she hoped he wouldn’t, completely in over his head, Jake is out of control and needs reigning in before he ends up dead. Grace, who will do anything for her family, comes out of her early retirement and is back into the life she once left behind. Can Grace save Jake? Can she go back to a life she wanted nothing more to do with?
What I loved about this book was the interaction with characters, it has crime, murders and all you expect to be associated with gangland life, but it also has a story of family and love in the background and oddly the two intermix really well to make this a great read!
Sorry Caz, very disappointed with this book. It started off quite well I thought we could be on for a good one here. Then suddenly it turned into a soap opera after the promising start. There was no detail in the rare "gangster" episodes, one example of a major drugs hijack summed up in a paragraph no substance whatsoever. Sorry but very disappointed!!
Grace Sumner in the second installment of this grippy gangster series.....and this new book Back in the Game by Caz Finlay did not disappoint! I was hooked from the very few pages and before I knew it, it was time for me to get up!
Grace Sumner has left Liverpool's gangland scene and all she wants is a peaceful life, to bring up her young daughter Bella, watch her grow and be there for her, away from the crime, violence and killings that happened around her previously in Liverpool. All she wants to be is a good Mum to Bella. But, things are about to change when Grace is informed that her son Jake is in trouble. Jake is now running his dads, Nathan‘s old club and he's starting to make enemies. Grace is drawn back to Liverpool to keep him safe. Grace knows this is going to be hard as there are so many secrets that will come out of she is not careful.
This new book is full of twists and turn and will have you hooked just like the first book in this series called The Boss. However, don't worry this is a good stand alone book as well to read bit I do recommend you read the first book as well
I highly recommend this series and its a 5 star read.
Big Thank you to One More Chapter the publisher, NetGalley and Caz Finlay for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
Grace Sumner is back and it was worth the wait. Book one of this series I enjoyed last year, and I had a long wait to catch up with Grace and the Carter’s again. Luckily for me my wait won’t be so long next time, as book three of this fab series is due out in August. Grace had moved to the country to live a peaceful life with baby Belle, leaving son Jake running the Blue Rooms in Liverpool. After hearing from a good friend that Jake was struggling she’s back to quietly help him out hopefully without him realising. Unfortunately things don’t go quite to plan, and before long Grace is back in the thick of the business she tried to leave behind. Will Grace ever feel happy and safe again. This book has lots of twists and turns and Grace has to face some terrible heartache before there’s light at the end of tunnel for her. A great 5 star read and I’m looking forward to reading book 3 in August.
I found there was an awful lot of characters and at times I found myself quite confused with who was related to who and who were gang members. Saying this it was a good story.
Grace Sumner is the main character who was once a gang boss until she decided to leave it all behind her and move to the village of Harewood in Leeds with her eight-month-old daughter Belle. Her son Jake took over the reins but word gets to her that all is not well and he is not coping. The blue rooms are the mainstay of the family business, but with her husband Nathan dead, there is no one to else to support her son so she returns. Grace is a very strong character, but she carries a big secret. This book was gritty and violent as you can imagine with it involving gangs. Caz has really hit the point and it was a very enjoyable book, just fewer characters.
I was lucky enough to read the first book in this series and thoroughly enjoyed it this follow on is just as good if not better.
After events in the previous book gangster boss Grace Sumner decides to leave the life and Liverpool and retreat to a quieter life in the countryside. Word soon reaches her that her son, Jake has taken up the reigns of the firm and making enemies left right and centres. Grace is forced to head back to Liverpool to sort things out and face old friends she would rather not.
I would highly recommend this book to others and look forward to reading more from this author.
Many thanks to the publishers and netgalley for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is a gripping, gritty and gruesome gangland thriller set in England and although it’s the second in a series, is perfectly able to read alone. It’s the typical gangland family except that this one was run by a woman, Grace Sumner, who recently left the business to her son to run. Grace is settle into a quiet country life until Jake, her son ,needs her help and Grace reluctantly needs to go back to work to save her son, Jake and the family business. Bigger then life characters but not too stereotypical as you would see in a film. Hard to side with a gangland family but somehow, through the author Caz Findlay’s talented work, you do.
Grace Sommer has come back once more to Liverpool to help her son Jake , who has now been running his late dad's club and other illegal businesses and left university for good. She gets a call telling her that her boys out of control and a bullet to the head is where he's heading. Grace has reasons for not wanting to return but her instincts will take her back and once more into the role of boss lady. We have murder, illicit affairs, back stabbing , and a truly can't put down book that is worth the reading. I would definitely recommend it and roll on August for the next installment.
Having read Caz Finlay's first book last year called the Boss I couldn't wait to read the follow up.. I certainly wasn't disappointed. Grace Sumner having returned to Liverpool was once again drawn into the crime and violence that surrounds her family and friends. but certainly not through choice. This is a book that grips you from page one and continues gripping you right to the very end. Caz is now one of my favourite crime authors and I cannot wait for the next book in the series due out in August. Five stars from me and cannot recommend this book enough
I'm absolutely loving this series! This was just as good as the first book The Boss. The story follows straight on from which we saw the feisty boss lady Grace up sticks and move away from Liverpool to have her baby, while she is happy enough living a quiet existence in the countryside one phonecall changes all that and she finds herself back in the thick of it doing what she does best! Don't want to say too much about the plot , all I can say is you must read it! Literally can't wait to read the next book!
if you thought book one was good you wait till you read book 2 it just brilliant Grace is quite happy out in the sticks with her daughter Belle. but one phone call tells her to get back to Liverpool .her son Jake has got in to some bother .this book brought happy memories as it mentioned Seaforth mu grandparents lived there .this book has it all Deceit lies greed .this series is a must read this authors writing is just brilliant
Back in the game is a continuation of The boss , a book that i've really enjoyed and this one is up to my expectations as well. I loved how the author has created Grace, our main heroine , she's strong and fearless, but also human and that motherly instinct will never leave her even if she run away from the past and the world she was brought up. Same fast paced, twisted mysterious and thrilling story that i highly recommend for for the lovers of the genre.
This book is definitely a 5⭐️ as far as the story and plot go, but what spoilt it for me and knocked off 2 ⭐️ was the large amount of swear words in the text. This book contained far too much bad language and spoilt the story for me. Such a shame as the story and plot were excellent. This book is worth a read if you can accept the large number of swear words in the text. If easily offended DO NOT READ.
