Trapped by the storm a thousand miles from home, Jake Walton and his family face the ultimate test of survival.
Stuck in Boston at a technology conference with his wife and children at their cabin in Tennessee, Jake Walton becomes trapped as multiple category five hurricanes devastate the east coast. As the situation worsens and an unknown foe begins to target key infrastructure points across the country, he will risk everything to get back to his family. Meanwhile, at their cabin, Sara and their children become ensnared in a dangerous conspiracy as they prepare to fight the elements, pulling them into a web of destruction that threatens the stability of the entire country.
Weathering the Storm is a near-future, what-if tale of a frightening apocalyptic future told through a gripping, roller coaster lens. As severe weather continues to impact the United States, Kenny Soward and #1 best-selling post-apocalyptic author Mike Kraus explore what might happen if a foreign nation were to exploit one of the most dangerous weather seasons of the year, using it to slip into the country unnoticed and cause exponentially greater damage, all without us knowing.
Weathering the Storm is a 6-part post-apoc tale that will be released monthly.
Welcome to my little space out on the web. I'm Kenny Soward, and I'm an author, musician, and once IT guy. I write books in many sub-genres of Science Fiction and Fantasy, including post-apocalyptic, military science fiction, epic fantasy, and horror. I'm influenced by authors such as Stephen King, George R. R. Martin, Anne Rice, J.K. Rowling, Mark Lawrence, Dan Simmons, Robin Hobb, Robert McCammon, Larry Correia, and Mike Kraus.
I love all kinds of movies and shows from Battle Star Galactica (reboot) to the Walking Dead. There's nothing I won't try.
I grew up in Kentucky in a small suburb just south of Cincinnati, Ohio, listening to hard rock and playing outdoors. In those quiet 1970's streets, I jumped bikes, played Nerf football, and came away with many scars.
My grandfather and many of my uncles and cousins served in the United States Military, and my father was a Kentucky State Trooper. Their efforts taught me the meaning of sacrifice and gratitude. I've always had an avid curiosity about the world around me, and I hope my enthusiasm for life carries over into my stories, even the dark ones.
*Some spoilers* This was a good start and typical read for a post-apoc series launch. Being from East Tennessee I was a little surprised to see places I've lived and gone to college play such a major role. Although, East Tennessee does have considerably more national security assets than most Americans realize. Nevertheless, the choices of Maryville and Douglas Dam were a little perplexing. The other assets in the area - Federal facilities and nuclear plants - are extremely heavily guarded so perhaps that was considered. Dams are largely unguarded but its because they are terribly difficult to destroy without an airborne attack by bombs or missiles. If a foreign country developed a super chemical to help destroy dams, as is the case here, they could do a lot more damage in a more heavily populated area instead of the rural areas downstream from Douglas Dam. That aside, I had to really suspend my disbelief about a foreign plane loaded with soldiers and chemicals making it so far into America undetected - even during a bad storm. It is likely such a plane would have been discovered and tracked and stopped way before it got to McGhee Tyson Airport which, coincidently, shares a runway with the Air National Guard. The adjoining air base would certainly be alerted to such an incoming plane and is more than capable of stopping such a threat with its own Apache Air Attack Squadron and jets. I digress, but sometimes it's difficult to read unbelievable fiction although I realize its difficult to make a fiction book about an apocalypse which hasn't occurred totally realistic. I will likely continue the series to find out what else happens in Tennessee.
This had be drawn in form first page and couldnt put it down..in fact read the 5 books available back to back over 2 nights. (then was lucky enough to be sent beta edition of Book 6 by author!)

Tempest - Weathering the Storm Book 1 - a review by Rosemary Kenny
An apocalyptic event and the subsequent story of survivors, with a family split apart by many miles struggling to reunite against all odds, with the usual adversarial encounters and dangers to overcome along the way is fairly standard fare to lovers of the genre in Tempest, Book 1 in Kenny Soward and Mike Kraus' new Weathering the Storm series. Where it differs is firstly, in the aforementioned event being caused by titanic-scale storms, in particular the eponymous Tempest or mega-storm and a series of worsening tsunamis and cyclones that leave vast areas under water worldwide and secondly, the covert ops invasion by Chinese and Russian forces bent on taking advantage of the catastrophes bombarding the US and the outbreak of lawlessness, violence and looting etc, distracting both law-enforcers and troops alike. Intrigued? You should be! Grab yourself a copy while you can - they're selling really fast!
Lots of suspense and action. Storms isolate Jake and his family in a cabin. They must now figure out how to survive this. Fast paced action that grips you from the beginning.
I find myself drawn to post apocalyptic literature, so I had to try this book to see if it would be worth continuing on with the series. I must say that I was soon captivated by the around and it's characters. I will be continuing with the series, it took a little while to get into the action, but once there I am interested to see how this unfolds. Overall, a good read.
Mike Kraus and Kenny Soward, have delivery an earth shattering new series. Edge of your seat, and mail hitting excitement. Could not hardly wait to get the end so I could start book two. Amazing well defined characters that you will root for from beginning to the last page.
A great beginning for this series by Soward and Kraus!!!! Loads of action, excitement and adventure (as usual). Characters are brought to life and has an outstanding storyline!!!!
I loved Tempest, the first in series Weathering the Storm. I liked the flicking to other characters it keeps the story flowing and it doesn't get bogged down and boring. I really recommend reading this book.
Honestly, when I got to the part maybe 2~3 pages in, I knew this was not the book for me. Who knows, maybe the subject matter will interest me a year from now and I'll update my review post then.
Its a good beginning to an interesting storyline of mother nature’s fickle ways and combined with terror attacks in the middle of U.S. A. Jake is in Boston when a cat 5 hits and destroys the area. While his wife and children are close to where the terror attacks are.
This was a fairly decent start to a series. There were some issues with awkward writing and editing, but nothing too major. The Boston storm story line was a bit formulaic with a storm of unexpected ferocity, services collapse and the only groups capable of organizing are criminal gangs. I live on the east coast and a storm expected to be cat 3 would result in major efforts to prepare and warn and certainly persons in the path would not be able to ignore it as did Jack. I like the twist of an enemy orchestrating a terror attack during the distraction of the storm, though it is puzzling why they would focus so much on small cities and rural communities of Tennessee, rather than larger targets. Also, assuming these ninja attacks would not be able to cripple the US (at least it had not in book 1), once the storm ends and the government refocuses, how would those countries not be open to widespread international condemnation etc? Not sure of their endgame, I guess. I will continue with book 2 to see what happens.
I like the thought of terrorist action behind the storms and involved in their creation. It's not totally unique, but not as common an apocalyptic tool.
I liked the MC's, for the most part. My biggest hang ups are the "holy mission" type terrorists, and, believe it or not, how the 8 year old daughter is written. Not sure if the author has children, but if he/they do this not how an 8 year old behaves. She acts more like a 4 year old.
Excellent apocalyptic thriller with plenty of twists, turns and exciting drama. There are several arcs in this storyline and they all are demanding my attention. I plan to get book 2 in this series as soon as I I finish this review. I can hardly wait to see what happens next! Highly recommended!
I really enjoyed this book... The characters were well developed and in turn, as a reader you care for them and what they are going through. Can't wait to read book number 2!!!
This is the start of a survival series. Severe weather disasters strike the East Coast, while the Tennessee area is attacked by terrorists from China and Russia.
I like the characters in the story and so far, the series has captured my interest.
The way the survivors have lasted so far is amazing. Jake is a bad ass and so is Sara.. Marcy is going to be great also. Foreigners on American soil is not good. Can't wait for the next book.
