Searching for the truth, means coming under fire.

DCI James Hardy was hoping for a quiet life. He stepped away from his career at New Scotland Yard and moved his family to the south coast to start over. For a short while, life was good. But now the past is catching up with him.

Hardy recently learned that Edward Fischer, the man he arrested for a string of killings, is also the man who orchestrated his wife's murder. And now, Fischer has escaped from prison and is on the run.

Fischer is a free man, and before he leaves the country and disappears for good, he’s looking for compensation from Hardy. The sort of compensation money can't buy. The kind that will cause Hardy pain and suffering.

And when Hardy's new home becomes a target and his family come under threat, he finds he has no choice but to step up and do what he's best at... catching killers.

Jay Gill was born in Poole, Dorset, United Kingdom. At aged 18, Jay moved to London where he worked in the printing industry, specialising in pharmaceutical leaflets and packaging. After years of commuting and working in this fast-paced environment, Jay moved back to Dorset with his family to enjoy the slower pace of life on the south coast. It was at this point that he carved out time to develop the detective thrillers that had been rattling around inside his head.

He lives with his wife and two daughters on the south coast of England, and though he loved the twenty-something years he spent in and around London, and the home counties, he feels settled and at peace in his native Dorset.

This is book 5 of a series with DCI James Hardy as the main “police character”. A very enjoyable easy read from the first book onwards. The twists in the stories, courtesy of the Mentor, entwined with the Hardy family & leading back and forth throughout, have kept things interesting - I want to know what she’s going to do next - sociopathic godmother?!! I also enjoyed Jay Gill’s humour in the relationship between the 2 rather nasty ‘killers for hire’ - the Titanium private health plan conversation reduced me to somewhat warped giggles imagining the scenario. The development of the lives of other characters in this book - ie the Rayners & Emma Cotton - is better - though I was left wanting to scream “alarm bells” at Emma! Seriously, as a DI, she seems a little naive at times! That particular scenario seems fairly obvious - but perhaps Mr Gill has yet more twists planned. One other thing, Jay Gill portrays his child characters well ( Alice and Faith). Their “language”, behaviour etc has been appropriate throughout the series for their ages. (There has been numerous times where I’ve been aggravated by the portrayal of child characters - one especially recently had a 3 year old talking in baby language which drives me insane. ) All in all, an enjoyable quick easy read with enough to make me look forward to the next book.

a great detective story with characters that have depth and are therefore interesting, not just 2 dimensional "bad/good guy".

Hardy's back!

I couldn't wait for this book. I'm so so glad that Hardy is back. With characters that are believable,a storyline that leaves no stone unturned and an ending to make you want more this book has it all. The trouble is that I finished it in 2 days!! I couldn't put it down. Now I need the next chapter in his life. Jay Gill you need to put your nose to the grindstone and produce another cracker for all of his fans.

A rollercoaster of emotions A+++++

I have read all the names Harry novels and almost feel part of the chats lives.
It feels like I can relate and empathise with each of them.

This is by far the most compelling, fraught and nerve shredding book to date.....

I have just finished book 5, Inferno!
Another brilliant example of superbly written crime stories.
I wanted to get to the end but didn't want to as I truly didn't want the story of DCI James Hardy to end. How Jay Gill links everything together yet keeps you in suspense is amazing. Cant wait for book 6!
