Fae law is clear—Never use magic in the mortal realm. Except that’s what I do for a living, and for paying off my student debt. I just couldn’t leave it on Aunt Miriam’s tired, battered shoulders, not to mention that love spells pay well. And it all worked out just fine—until it didn’t, and the Lord of Winter tracked me down.
Lysander Nightfrost is a ruthless fae king enforcing millennia old law. I should run for the hills when he appears, but my feet keep rooted in the ground. I can’t stop staring at his sharp warrior features, his hair like liquid gold, his ice-blue eyes sending chills all through me. He’s here to punish me. But when he learns who I really am, the tides turn.
I am what the fire king Xerxes has been searching for since the day my father died, which makes me a powerful weapon in Lysander’s hands. One of the ways he can use me is trade me over in exchange for something he wants from Xerxes. I’m trapped, stripped of choices, but not of my will. If I go down, I’ll take Lysander’s ice-cold heart with me. It’s a tough game, but I will either melt it, or drown it at the bottom of the ocean.
Ana Calin believes every good romance needs a dash of danger, a spark of magic, and a hero who’s more than just a little bit dark. Author of Prince of Midnight, Lord of Winter, King of Flames, and other spine-tingling tales, Ana invites readers to escape into worlds where brooding lords, fiery passions, and supernatural secrets await at every turn. When she’s not summoning her characters to life, she’s digging through old legends, or people-watching for inspiration, all while sipping her coffee a little too dramatically. If you’re ready for love stories that smolder and heroes that haunt your dreams, welcome to Ana’s world—where midnight is just the beginning.
Another great read from the paranormal world of Ana calin this time it's a hot fae winter Lord with a body and face made for sin!! The only problem he has a cold heart and when he goes to the mortal world to punish a half fae woman who has been using her water powers to make men fall in love with the women that pay her to do. Ariella is just trying to pay for college, but Mr cold and big bad doesn't care. When Lysander nightfrost finds out she's the lost daughter of the Ocean king he decides to give her to the fire king Xerxe so he doesn't go to war with the winter fae,but he's falling for ariella and backs out of the deal, but theirs consequences and lysander makes a desicion that will tear these two lovers apart. This is a great storyline and so many interesting characters as well. It doesn't end on a cliffhanger, but more of a continuing in book two King of Frost coming out in January 2020 ! Until next time Luvs💞💋
Īss ceļojums fantāzijas pasaulē, galvenā varone Ariella ir pusfeja, kas izsauc feju lorda no Ziemas Dimensijas dusmas, nelegāli izmantojot maģiju, lai palīdzētu cilvēkiem mīlas ķibelēs. Šajā pasaulē ir viss, viss, ko vien fantāzijas žanra mīlētāja sirds varētu kārot – elfi, raganas, dēmoni, un laikam jau arī eņģeļi, elle, Sengrieķu mitoloģijas dievi, vampīri, ceļojumi dimensijās utt. Var arī paprātot par vārda “nē” spēku, ja to pasaka pārāk ātri, neapsverot atbildi, vai neņem vērā, ja kāds tev to saka. Nu lielas nepatikšanas var sanākt.
I was so excited for this one thinking it would be a follow up to Pestilence by Laura Thalassa but this was definitely not it. I knew it wasn't my jam from the writing. It just didn't read right like how I imagined old ancient fae kings to talk and act. They acted and spoke like norm people from this century which made it hard for me to put myself into the story. Next, this book is confusing. The author tries to build up intricate worlds but I'm just confused as to what the back stories are for each character and their motivations. Also, it was kind of funny and pathetic how one of the characters cried himself until he dissolved into water.
Anyways, I expected hot tension scenes but got mild at best. It was sooooooo slow burn, leaving nothing juicy until the end and even then it didn't satisfy me. The cliffhanger or plot twist? Stupid and doesn't make sense.
I'm just going to say that this book was a huge disappointment to me.
The writing didn't transport me to a fae world and neither their language. For example, the King of Frost who talks more like a human and also I didn't felt he acted 'coldly'.
The story had some parts that didn't make sense and then there's the cliffy end that felt rushed.
ONE SPITFIRE ADVENTURE!!! Rock on! Ana not only hit pay dirt, she raised the roof and blazed a path, knocking 'em out and watching 'em roll, blowing this baby into a tailspin with shocking results. Non-stop, action packed, heart pounding, pulse racing, page flipping, block buster makes for one thrilling experience. Trudging through the trials and tribulations, along with sharp twists, sleek turns and thin lines, grounding in it's strength and awe inspiring in it's depth. Battling the drama, turmoil, intrigue, danger and suspense, while tension spirals, fusing this gem together seamlessly. The characters on point personalities transform and flourish, blending together flawlessly. The scenes and dynamics are written with such realism there's no problem interpreting each as they play off one another smoothly. Remarkable job Ana, thanks for sharing this little treasure with us.
DNF. Feels like a fanfic written by a teenage girl with no notion of character or plot development. The dialogue was really terrible. I felt I was losing brain cells as I tried to get through this. However, it's the fact that this book got a bunch of five star reviews that truly saddened and angered me. We need honesty in reviews, otherwise we're just wasting people's time and money.
Mystical, magical and intriguing! A compelling read with action, adventure, old laws, older fueds, magic, chemistry, secrets, deals, conflicts and more. Arielle and Lysander are soul mates but a deal has been struck with Xerxes but things change and they are on the run....so come along for the ride!
3-3.5 stars. Well, well, well. So this is a very short book and while it is super fast paced the author still managed to sneak her hooks all up in me. The plot is flowing really fast but I'm having no trouble staying in the world and with everything as far as the magical concepts are explained. The author definitely presents a unique story concept to go with a couple well known tropes and adds in a mix of reinvented fairy tale which drove the enjoyment even higher.
Ariella, our FMC, knows the rules, she knows she isn't to use her magic among the humans and never for their benefit but a girls got to do what a girls got to do to pay the bills right? Up until she gets caught and hauled off to the dungeon of the winter king to die... only when she awakens it turns out she is the last decedent of the Sea god and has a whole host of power awakening with her. Now she must navigate who is actually friend and who is foe in order to survive. Especially the ruthless Fae king.. who after multiple attempts, it seems, has decided she is worth far more to him alive.. and his to protect.. his to claim..
The honest truth is the ending here sent me straight into book 2. It was a super short read with a fast paced plot but I really like what is happening here so far. I do hope that after such an explosive start that the author doesn't have it taper off into a super long series of pining.. we shall see.
If I was still in the youngster reading stage back in the day (high school) then I probably would have given this book a higher rating however as it stands right now; the story needs so much work. I was tempted to DNF it however i pushed through - momma didn’t raise no quitter.
I want to give the author huge credit for finishing this book and I’m soooo sorry for this brutally honest review of my own opinions that carries no significant weight whatsoever for anyone but myself.
Here it is, the characters are completely 100% insane and so confusing/contradictory that you have no idea where half of their conversations are going or what they are trying to get across. It was hot and cold ALL THE TIME. And they weren’t even that interesting of characters, the way their dialogue was written made me want to laugh at how absurd they are. And y’all that sounds mean but I’m being honest. This ice fae king is supposed to be EXTREMELY OLD but the author fails to convey that. Like epically. He sounded like a forlorn teenager trying to impress the MC by flexing his muscles. Who lets be honest, she isn’t that great of a catch. The villain - fire fae king - was ridiculous. Like we have no substance to this dude. He was the typical cliche “give me what I want or you die” mobster type. 🤦🏽♀️ like please stop. The lovey part in this book kinda made me want to hurl a little bit in my mouth, like Arielle was so wishy washy and honestly I agreed with her not wanting to touch the ice fae king cause he was a douchnozzle but then all of a sudden the little prison cell mate(can’t even remember her name) gave a full blown guilt trip to the main character that made no sense.... The ending - y’all i just.... I just don’t understand why the author chose that route to take.. for a surprise effect? Idk. It didn’t make any sense for them to get that heated, that fast, with all this drama between them. And for her to FEEL SURPRISED ABOUT WHY HE DENIED HER in the end didn’t make me feel sad for her which is pretty awful but at this point I felt like she knew what she was doing and didn’t heed any warnings or you know, common sense.
In the end I just felt sooo unattached to this book. The storyline wasn’t compelling, the characters were not interesting and the world building was meh.
Side note: Get it if you like the writing style similar to that of Twilight because your review might be a 100% different than mine..
—>>> Lately, I was itching for a Fae romance, and I found the beginnings of an intriguing series in this book, featuring Arielle de Saelaria who gets caught using Fae powers (very much prohibited) in the human world and earning money off her clients to pay her student loans. Unfortunately, Arielle was taken and imprisoned by the coldly beautiful and equally deadly King Lysander Nightfrost himself, Lord of the Winter Realm, the one Fae powerful enough to keep all the other realms in check, especially the Fire or Hell realm. When her name is brought to the Winter Council's attention, that is when the action begins to take off between an ancient Fae King and a half-Fae But in the Flipside, which mirrors the mortal world, Arielle’s being found can finally mean an end to the cold war with King Xerxes and the constant struggle between their kingdoms of fire and ice, because he wants her. The good news was Arielle was no longer going to be jailed for her crimes. The bad news was she was going to be used as the Winter Court's pawn...and sacrificed for their greater good instead. It may be way too late when Lysander realizes he wants to keep the one female who can turn his ice and steel molten, because he will do all he can to set her free as she wishes. How far she will get from this whole nightmare of a situation is another story. Really looking forward to continuing this series!
At the beginning of this book we see Arielle uses her powers for humans to benefit from in order to get money to pay off her student debt. This lands her with high treason against the Council of Arcane as it is forbidden for fae or half fae to live in the mortal realm, never mind using magic there. Whilst in the dungeon she meets Edith, a fellow prisoner who’s family have been the keepers of knowledge. It is then we discover Arielle is the descendent of the ocean king, someone the Lord of fire has been looking for.
Throughout the book Lysander has been determined to give the lord of fire, Xerxes, Arielle in exchange for a blood oath. That way war between their kingdoms wouldn’t happen. However he begins having doubts the closer he gets to Arielle. In the end, sensing trickery at the meeting with Xerxes, Lysander decides to not give Arielle to him. As a result this causes a massive fight between the lords and leads to a major betrayal to Arielle.
Overall, i enjoyed the plot line of this book but it was a little slow to me. I didn’t really see any character growth either. Arielle seemed to stay the same throughout the whole book, dead set on hating Lysander only to do a complete 180 right at the end. That seemed very fast and didn’t match her personality at all. Im all for the enemies to lovers trope but this one seemed very slow and yet rushed at the same time.

Hidden powers, new worlds, magical destinies... I'm all for it! The delivery of this story was poor. This could have been so good. Our heroine has powers to command the ocean yet she's useless. The fighting rulers (lord of fire and lord of ice) want her "extreme power" but they have to sleep with her to get it. She's abused by her captor, lord ice, who thinks if he hands her over to lord fire (for her imprisoned life of rape) its ok because it stops a potential war. What? So his nemesis gets to rape her and use her power to defeat him? That possibility never occurs to him. Seriously? When she's tossed into the ocean and flooded with power she's doesn't use it to escape? Really? Then lord ice thinks she should be his mate so to speak and propositions her. She gets mad then changes her mind and acts like they NEED to be together. No romance. No relationship build up. Just lets do this. It could have been a solid story.
Such a compelling story. Arielle doesn't take responsibility for her own actions. She knows the magic she is practicing in the human world is prohibited, but oh well, she needs the money. When she is taken into custody by the Lord of Winter for her crimes she finally realizes maybe she shouldn't have done it. However, everyone is surprised when her ancestry is discovered and everything changes. Lysander is enchanted with her. There is a war brewing and Arielle is part of the solution. I loved the vulnerability Lysander shows when he is with her. I was irritated with her propensity to react to her emotions instead of thinking things through. Lysander broke my heart when he rushed into an arrangement after he and Arielle had an argument. I can't wait for the next book! I requested an advanced reader copy and am under no obligation to leave this review.
2 Stars I read this book out of curiosity so I didn't pay attention to a lot of the things that happened in the beginning. I hated the Hero, he was so arrogant and I didn't care if he began to have feelings for the heroine, I'm just not in the mood for a guy like him. And then there was the ending with a cliff hanger and it made me angrier. Some parts were messy and didn't make any sense to me and now there is another book that I wasn't expecting which I have to say that I don't like this fact because if I knew it , I wouldn't have started this book because I don't like series about the same characters
The beginning of this story is really great and for one moment I did think that all was lost before it even started. I should have known better by now. 🙂 Ariel's fate take a turn when her secret is revealed to everyone, even herself. Problem is, someone is not letting her fulfill her role. For someone so smart, he really does some stupid things, specially the final one. But I guess love can make all of us do stupid things. I keep saying that Ana Calin's stories need to reach the small or big screen because the setings and outfits are just fantastic. This one is no exception. An amazing story a bit inspired by Little Mermaid.
Es un libro raro. Tiene una buena premisa, me gusta este retelling mezclado entre la sirenita, Jack frost y ¿El infierno? Me gustó bastante.
What an interesting and thoroughly engrossing read. I really DO NOT LIKE MINERVA!!! Evil .... Love , love Lysander and Arielle! Complex and very enjoyable cast of characters...im impressed, very impressed. My first book by this author and i truly cant wait to read more of her books in this series. Good stuff this and my first time readung this type of book. Im a new fan! Thank you , Ana Calin for allowing me to delve into your world!
This was so badly thought out. I could not for the life of me invest myself in story, the heroine or any of the side characters. This was definitely YA trying to be NA but not keeping up with the world building and depth of the characters to really hit the mark (apart from the insta attraction, the bane of my existence).
I loved reading how this young woman belongs to water. She goes against ancient rules and ends up in an ice prison. Once they find out what she really is everything changes for her.
Lysander just will not stop manipulating. He is a know it all and all he needs to do is think and listen. Typical dominant male. I know all, I protect all, I give up all. Maybe soon he’ll learn about cooperations, team work, shared goals....
A half Fae finds her powers. Arielle is brought up in the mortal world to keep her safe. Lyssander kidnaps her and then Arielle is furious at him for binding her. A non stpp read in the supernatural world.. Meet the evil and good in the Fae Realm.
I loved the story line, well written. Love how she learn to use her powers with the help of her new friends. Ended on a cliffhanger so fed have to read the next one but heck I already did.
I'm still processing how I feel about this book. I hate cliffhangers and I hate how controlling the main male character is - king, or not. I hope there is more character development in the next books. I hated how this one ended and feel it just cemented the selfishness of the male lead.
Another great series. Fae law is strict. No magic around humans. What is one to do if money is needed. Worked well until you get caught. Can’t wait for the next one.
When half-fae Arielle is caught breaking faery law by selling her magic to a mortal, she's drug to the dungeons by the Winter Lord himself, Lysander Nightfrost.
When I first started this book, I thought it was going to be chalk-full of Disney tropes-- Arielle is the main female lead, there's references to Tinker Bell, and there's a reference to actual Disney princesses all in the first two pages of the book. I admit there was a bit of eye-rolling there on my part until the story started to get more depth...
The story takes a turn when Arielle is recognized by another prisoner as she's about to freeze to death. Her ancestry makes her role in the faery world more spectacular. There's some nice plot-setup-- political intrigue, some brokering for peace gone bad, and a burgeoning love story gone a little flat.
This cliff-hanger story would have been better if the author had made this novel-length instead of breaking the book apart into a series of books-- I guess that's the thing that a lot of these Kindle Unlimited books do so the author can make more money. What I find disconcerting is that if the the free book isn't interesting, has bad grammar or the plot falls flat they're not really making anything.
Portions of the book felt a little preachy in terms of political correct-ness in a fantasy novel-- For example: "... I'm not the Average Joe. I'm the average Jane." The main character seems to have this feminine chip on her shoulder at times; but she vacillates between projecting a strong, feminine presence and needing protection from the hunky Lord of Winter. This sends mixed-message to the reader and makes the character seem more like a snowflake than a water princess.... and that's not even mentioning the irony of a romance novel that implies males aren't necessary.
I really couldn't get behind the whole nonsensical plot either-- why give away your only bargaining piece? I mean, talk about showing your cards before the hand was played. The Winter Lord had a tenuous peace, but by showing his hand he basically laid everything all out for the disaster that "miraculously" just happened... sorry, but no. Just no.
The story was cute and had a lot of potential, but it was too poorly executed to make it noteworthy. Spelling, homonym, and grammar errors aplenty made the book lack a certain amount of polish for a novella. The conflicts with characters acting out of character and plot lines that jumped all over the place... the only consistent thing was how disappointing and flat this left me when it ended on a predictable precipice.
Nice try, but needs improvement... but if you're out for romance books for the sake of romance and don't really care about consistency, but just want a brain-candy read that doesn't make sense... you might like this book. It did have a lot of potential... I just personally felt it was written more for a prepubescent adolescent who can't focus on details.
... I've said it in other reviews, but I really need to stop reading these free books from Facebook advertisements and then writing reviews... I feel bad writing all the things I didn't like-- like I'm trashing someone's great work... but at the same time, I want the authors to improve without quashing their desire to write... I'm going to finish my queue, and then just read published authors for a while... maybe some classics to cleanse my pallet...
