A beautiful poignant Summer Read, one I eagerly devoured.
I can't recommend this book enough. It really does have a little something for everyone!
Perfect read for lovers of Chick Lit, Romance, scrumptious food, YA, Summer Reads.
I received this book from the Publisher in exchange for a honest and fair review via Netgalley.
Family troubles, infidelity, unplanned pregnancy, quarrelling teenagers, blossoming romance Sue Moorcroft packs it all into this gem of a story. Well-written, humorous but with enough depth to make it more than just a fluffy holiday read. Just for the Holidays is definitely worth reading.
A month long holiday in a gite in an idyllic part of France might be anyone’s idea of a perfect break. But not for our heroine Leah. Reluctantly persuaded to join a family holiday with her sister Michelle and her husband – whose marriage is in its death throes, plus their two young children, Leah goes along however its not quite the relaxing time that she envisaged.
Unexpected events mean that Leah goes from being ‘Cool Auntie’ to ‘Deputy Mum’ and for a thirty something singleton by choice who cherishes her independence, this is not what Leah signed up for. I did feel for her, I really did. The thought of being responsible for two quarrelsome teenagers would send me running for the hills, however Leah steps up to the mark admirably. Her cooking skills do help and win her some brownie points; her job as a chef/chocolatier enables her to rustle up a meal in a heartbeat and her chocolate distraction techniques save the day more than once. (Just a word of warning, with the amount of chocolate tasting and baking going on, you could find yourself raiding the kitchen cupboards!). She has some unexpected distraction in the form of Ronan, the rather handsome next door neighbour and a helicopter pilot no less, who is recuperating following an accident. Ronan has his teenage son Curtis with him and whilst all three teenagers hang out together, they seem to be on a mission to stop Leah and Ronan doing the same!
Don’t get the impression that this is a fluffy rom com; although it is humorous, it has much more depth than that, covering more serious subjects as infidelity, pregnancy, bankruptcy but it also has just a little raunchiness to add to the romantic interest.
Sue Moorcroft has a talent for making her characters engaging or unlikeable (in this case, for me, there were both), but whichever, they are always completely believable and with storylines that reflect issues that could face any family. The family dynamics here are very well written as is the emotional turmoil and consequences that our characters have to deal with, particularly those affecting the children.
I liked Leah and full credit to her for just getting on with the job and for not bailing out but my favourite character was Ronan – mostly for the obvious reasons! To add to his apparent gorgeousness, he’s intelligent, fun, considerate but also very responsible. He has plenty of problems of his own to deal with and it transpires that a moody teenager turns out to be the least of his worries!
I always enjoy this author’s books and Just for the Holidays is no exception. It’s a perfect read to get you in the mood for a holiday, or just a perfect read at any time really. Sue Moorcroft takes her research very seriously and at the end of the book she describes her helicopter flight that includes a pretend crash. Now that’s dedication for you!
When Michele asked her sister Leah to come along with her family to a vacation, she hesitated a bit, but decided to go. Michele and her husband are getting divorced, but with two teenagers, she needed her sister to be there for everyone's sake. In France Leah is thrown into a situation she never expected-her sister is pregnant and went away for a while with the father of her child while Leah has to take care of the rest of the family. As one situation happens after another, there's one thing that brightens Leah's days and that's a handsome neighbor Ronan, who has a teenage son himself. How's the vacation going to continue and what happens afterwords they leave France? It was my first book by the author, but definitely won't be my last, I really enjoyed the writing style and how the characters and the setting was brought to life. It shows a real family with real issues and how life is with teenagers. It's a great summer read that whisks you away to France. If you like emotional family story in a gorgeous setting it's a great book for you.
Yet another tour-de-force from Sue Moorcroft. A highly recommended summer read.
The setting is France, in a gite, and in an area of France that I know (near Strasbourg) With two sisters, Leah and Michelle, forced through an injury to Michelle's ex-husband, to take on wholly unfamiliar tasks and responsibilities for Michelle's children..
Enter a new neighbour, helicopter pilot Ronan and his son, and you have a delightful mix. If it can go wrong, then it generally will, and sometimes relatives behave SO weirdly.
But never mind - it can' last forever - in fact it can only be "Just for the holidays"
Leah accompanies her sister on holiday, driving over in her Porsche Cayenne, whilst the family members travel in the Pink Pig people carrier (yes, it’s pink!). But this is not a run-of-the-mill family vacation, because sister Michele and brother-in-law Alister are in the final throes of their marriage, one last joint holiday for the 2 children, Natasha and Jordan. Leah’s role is part interlocutor, part cook and bottle washer (she is after all a creative genius when it comes to delicious puds) and part dilutor of marital distress. Leah is certainly thrown in at the deep end – just how do you cope with 2 teenagers, who hook up with a third young man from next door, when you have focussed solely on work and cars and given little – actually no – consideration to parenting!
As it happens there is a potential love interest in the shape of Ronan next door (father of aforementioned young man), who is a helicopter pilot recovering from a shoulder injury sustained from a forced landing. He is currently on sick leave, renovating their summer house.
There are quite a few unfortunate developments on their holiday – potentially making it the holiday-from-hell for Leah – but she is a likeable and resilient young woman who thrives in adversity; and keeps the show on the road for the others who are all grappling with their own emotional turmoil and wimping out.
The setting is delightful and as a reader I was there in the gîte, with Leah and co., soaking up the French atmosphere, food and ambience. Enjoy!
Between jobs, chocolatier extraordinaire Leah Beaumont agrees to accompany her sister, Michele, to spend a month in the south of France. Michele had originally planned the holiday with her husband and their two children and doesn’t fancy going without someone else after she and her husband have split up. However, husband turns up, so do others and it anything but the relaxing time she’d envisaged! Especially when Leah’s role changes from being auntie to acting Mum to the two children who seem to be struggling almost as much as their parents to get on with each other! Now add in a handsome neighbour - a helicopter pilot recovering from a dramatic accident - and his goth son and you’ve all the ingredients for a very sweet but tumultuous read!
If you like chocolate, some of the descriptions will have your mouth watering. This story includes some deeper aspects such as infidelity and betrayal as well as the impact on teenagers in the family but has some lighthearted moments and funny incidents, too. There’s also a serious accident, a lover or two, plenty of delicious food and fast driving. The author brings the characters (and scenery) vividly to life in the pages of the story, making it easy for readers to relate to them whether that is to like them or hate them! The plot has plenty of twists and turns that kept me turning pages as I really wanted to discover how everything worked out. This is a brilliant summer read and I have no hesitation in highly recommending it along with other books by this talented author.
I requested and was gifted a copy of this book via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion after choosing to read it.
When her sister splits with her husband, Leah finds herself agreeing to go on their holiday to a gite in France. She doesn't expect to find herself in sole charge of her teenage niece and nephew with a steep parenting learning curve ahead of her. There is the added attraction of a helicopter pilot and his son doing up the place next door to improve matters slightly.
I loved the way Leah tackled her new responsibilities and found the way to their hearts through some good old fashioned baking and expeditions and water fights in the garden.
The book has troubled relationships, family issues, sibling arguments combined with some delicious meals outside at the gite and huge sparks of attraction thwarted at every turn.
The cover really entices you to pick this book up as a perfect summer read- and I guarantee you'll want to carry on reading once you start. Making this the ideal read for your summer holidays. You'll fall in love with the characters and the setting. I can't wait to read Sue Moorcrofts next book as I love her writing style.
The perfect escape book! And that is probably what Leah was thinking when she was offered the chance of a holiday for a month with her sister, Michelle and her family who needed to get away from it all. Her sister and husband are going through a tough spell, and Michelle needs her sister there for support! How could you say no?!
But Leah soon finds that her auntie duties are going to be put to good use, when Michelle disappears off with a new boyfriend, and her husband ends up in hospital out of action! Auntie Leah to the rescue! And she couldn't do that without the help of a rather gorgeous neighbour, Ronan, who is there with his teenage son and struggling with his own issues and the never ending issues of teenagers and their problems!
This is one of those books that just relaxes you the moment you pick it up and you can't help but just go along with the flow and enjoy the interaction of a variety of characters and watch how they deal with a number of issues! The 2 children of Michelle and Alistair, are often left wondering just what is happening with their parents and it's nice that they can turn to their Aunt for support when all else around them seems to be crumbling.
I'm a fan of Sue Moorcroft's books in general, but I think this one is my favourite. Leah agrees to help her sister and estranged husband out by tagging along on their family holiday and being the 'Cool Auntie' to their two teenagers. Poor Leah. I felt so sorry for her as things started off bad and got worse... and worse. Ronan is recovering from a shoulder/collarbone injury after a helicopter crash and spending some quality time with his son Curtis.
I loved that Leah was happy with the single life and that she was a complete petrol head. I also liked the way the teenagers kept getting in the way of ... well, everything. You really feel for both the main characters.
I really enjoyed this book. Highly recommended. Usual disclaimer - I know Sue Moorcroft through the Romantic Novelists Association. I am also a fan of her books.
If you love France, have always wanted to fly in a helicopter and fancy a laugh, then you are going to love this novel. The author really did her research with the helicopter thing – the story of how is funny in itself – the ends to which a writer will go to! Flowers sent with this book! :
Leah, the main character, has some guts – she loves Formula 1, drives a fast, posh car herself, eats chocolate for a living and is about to come into contact with the aforementioned flying machines. I want to be her.
There’s a lot of Alsace to enjoy in this novel – from the scented fields as evoked on the cover to the French flair which is woven throughout the novel. This is not so much French France but the part where Germany and so many nuances of both cultures combine in a flammenkuche of literary delights.
Oh and you will need to be eating when reading this novel – probably chocolate. Or at least have tissues to hand to curb the drooling this book will create.
With her sister Michele’s family in meltdown, Leah agrees to go with them to France, little realising just what she’s letting herself in for.
Just for the Holidays is a smashing summer read – just right for taking on your own holiday, although I think it should come with a warning. Sue Moorcroft describes food so impeccably that I found myself drooling and hungry for quite a lot of the time I was reading!
Like Leah, I don’t have a lot of time for children and could so readily relate to her feelings and exasperations as the holiday becomes hellish and complicated. There is such a fast paced plot that lurches from one disaster to another I really felt for poor Leah. I thought Leah was a glorious creation because she’s feisty and flawed, enjoying elements of life most stereotypically associated with men such as fast cars, so that Sue Moorcroft injects a pleasing layer of feminism into the romantic elements too. Ronan is the unattainable perfect hero and I found so much to dislike in Michele and Selina, neither of whom gained my sympathy despite their circumstances, that in Just for the Holidays there is a varied cast that will appeal to all readers.
However, what struck me most about Just for the Holidays was the quality of Sue Moorcroft’s writing. She has created three teenagers in Natasha, Jordan and Curtis that I know I couldn’t tolerate like Leah has to even though I felt sorry for their circumstances. They were horrendously real to me. The medical, culinary, romantic and sexual scenes were perfectly portrayed with just the right balance of detail and action. I could so easily picture myself in France too because Sue Moorcroft conveys place so convincingly. Whilst this is a romance at heart, Sue Moorcroft does not shy away from big themes too with betrayal, infidelity, finance, careers and parenthood very thoroughly explored to add layers of interest for all readers.
Just for the Holidays is an action packed portrayal of complicated family life with romance and relationships in a wonderful summer read. I really recommend it. https://lindasbookbag.com/2017/07/04/...
Chocolate tasting, brilliant sunshine, zipping through glorious countryside in her beloved sports car – all tempting for thirty-something happily single, Leah Beaumont, who’s invited to spend the summer with sister Michele’s family, relaxing at an idyllic gîte in France. But there’s a catch. Michele’s marriage is in trouble. Does Leah really wish to spend her summer waving the chequered flag each time the arguing becomes too much?
Factor in three anxious stroppy teenagers, as well as nursing Michele’s husband, not to mention picking up the pieces when her sister waves ‘au revoir’, setting off on a fling with a highly unsuitable younger man - many would have thrown in the beach towel faster than Leah could mutter crêpe au chocolat.
But next-door neighbour, handsome helicopter pilot, Ronan, helps keep Leah’s spirits lifted when she finds her role of cool auntie morphing into deputy mum. With wonderful wit and humour, Sue Moorcroft guides us through the ups and downs of a family making the most of a tricky summer break. I particularly liked the way she portrays the teenage members – the drama, the sulks, the bickering, the hugs… the love of food. So pop on a sunhat, grab a glass of wine and be transported to rural France… just for the holidays.
I loved The Christmas Promise (what wasn’t to love) so when I spotted Sue had written another and something set in France it was a sure fired bet I was going to be quick off the mark in adding it to my TBR pile. In fact it shot right to the top but, shush don’t tell anyone. A Mille-feuille read For those who may not know, mille-feuille is the term for those French layered pastries the British have stolen all in the name of the custard slice. A custard slice is not a mille-feuille but that’s for another blog post. In the context of this review mille-feuille means thousand leaves (layers) and, as this is a book of many parts… It’s also a book where chocolate features heavily so as an analogy it’s staying! Here we have a family, an extended family in crisis. A broken marriage, no – two broken marriages. Three grieving children. A broken man and a pretty messed up woman. Throw them together in a gite in Alsace along with a car called ‘The Pig’ and there’s bound to be fun, frolics and quite a few tears. I raced through this, if not in one sitting then two. There are gems I’m not going to forget “you cougar” and words that I’m obvs going to have to add to my vocabulary “I fink”. I just loved it, every single word and now… and now I can’t wait until Christmas for her next one.
I read many genres, but very rarely read holiday reads such as 'Just for the Holidays'. It's the first time that i have actually enjoyed a 'holiday read' book. There is so much happening in this book that I suggest that one will have to read for themselves. Recommended.
With many thanks for my copy. This is my honest review, freely given.
Poor Leah, she agrees to go on holiday with her recently separated older sister Michele and her two teenage children Natasha and Jordan to a gite in France. At the last minute her soon to be ex-brother-in law Alistar announces that he too is coming, since he paid for the holiday when they were together and he wants to spend the summer holidays with his children.
Suddenly single Leah's summer holiday seems less about lazing around in France drinking wine and more about rescuing her sister's family when one catastrophe after another befalls them.
The only silver lining is the helicopter pilot living next door with his teenage son, Curtis, recuperating after a rough landing, As Leah's sister and brother-in-law become MIA one way or another cool Auntie Leah has to step up to a whole new level of responsibility with three teenagers conspiring to make life even more difficult.
Can a commitment-phobe single woman enter a relationship with a divorced father of one? Can she cope with having total responsibility for her niece and nephew?
I've read several other books by Sue Moorcroft so I jumped at the chance when I saw this book on NetGalley. Swoon as you see the family enjoy a summer in France eating and drinking all the local produce, Wince at the familiarity of teenagers and their self-centred behaviour, then gasp as their parents act in a similar fashion.
Great summer reading, recommended to read sitting in the garden with a glass of something cold and alcoholic. A story about the modern family and the issues that come from maintaining relationships with your ex.
I received a free copy of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
I’ve only read a few of Sue Moorcroft’s books but all of them were absolutely gorgeous stories, and “Just for the Holidays” was incredibly feel – good, brilliantly balanced novel about family dynamics and dramas but written in a very good – humoured way. It actually had it all: wonderful setting, a normal family with issues and problems, great characters, some delicious food and was full of twists and turns.
The two of the main characters have probably one of the coolest jobs in the world – chocolatier – YUMMY! I mean, how great must it be to land such a job ( I am a chocoholic. I can’t live a single day without a piece of chocolate. Or two. Or much, much more. I was salivating at the descriptions of the lovely things Leah was producing with the children, all of them including chocolate), and helicopter pilot. Mmmm. And if we are with the characters – I immediately warmed to all of them, with all their problems and dramas. They were so well written, even the children, especially Natasha with her never – ending questions asked without a break, with their realistic banter and calling themselves names. Our main character Leah not only tastes chocolate for a living but she loves her Porsche and Formula 1. I loved how she went into her role of Deputy Mum, she was terrified but she never lost her coolness and she did really great. I totally fell for her, to be honest. The switch from “Cool Auntie” to “Deputy Mum” was a shock for her – a confirmed singleton, loving her independence, it was surely not what she has expected from the holidays. But she has done so well, and with the help of her cooking skills and being compassionate she has saved the day more than once. She was strong and independent and she knew what she wanted from life.
Ronan spends his holidays in a house next to the gîte, together with his teenage son Curtis. He’s recuperating after an accident at work involving helicopter and emergency landing (and guys. Sue Moorcroft has really overdone herself in the name of research – namely at the end of the story she describes the real helicopter flight in which she went for a pretended crash – how cool is that, no?) Ronan was great, not only sexy as hell but also funny and clever and had tons of problems, and the way he dealt with them was brilliant. He was rather gorgeous, guys. Really, the characters were loveable at the first sight or unlikeable at the first sight, but all of them were believable. Sue Moorcroft has also portrayed all the teenagers in this book so very convincingly – their antics will make you wince at its familiarity. The family dynamic are brilliantly written and the story flies effortlessly from situation to situation. And there are quite a few situations in this novel, mostly unfortunate ones, that turn the dreamed – of holidays in a beautiful place to holiday from hell – especially for Leah, but actually also for all involved.
My only problem was that somewhere around the middle the book went a little downhill for me. It slowed significantly down and started to drag on, even though there was still a lot happening! Not sure how it’s possible but it was like this. I had a feeling that we start to go in circles and even though it was entertaining and I kept my fingers crossed for Leah and Ronan to find a little alone time, I couldn’t help but sigh impatiently at the next interruption. But other than that the story was brilliant. Sue Moorcroft perfectly well knows when to drop the next bombshell and really, some of the surprise appearances were so, so unexpected – I more than once held my breath thinking oh no! Not this! Poor Leah.
“Just for the Holidays” was a lovely, full of feelings and understanding story about broken relationship and how they may affect all people involved, especially children – but don’t expect it to be a drama that is going to make you cry! If so, then with laughter. It is written in such a playful, humorous way and the author perfectly well knows how to break the tension with a joke or two. It is about love, forgiveness and friendship, about facing the consequences and being open to changes. There were so many emotions running through this story, from all of the characters. And even though it is humorous, it is not as fluffy as you could think. There is really a lot of depth to it, it makes you wonder and question, it has moments when it is truly thought – provoking and I just loved this mix. It touches upon many issues, such as late pregnancy, infidelity, exploiting and manipulating the others. It sounds serious, I know, but believe me, the author brilliantly lightened the story with her humour and with adding great romance. A perfect summer read, you should make sure that you have it with you, and not only just for the holidays! Highly recommended!

In Just For the Holidays we meet Leah, a saint amongst sisters, who is emotionally blackmailed by big sister Michele to join her fragmented family on holiday in Alsace. Although she doesn’t realise it at the time, the list of family traumas she will end up dealing with could have filled a parenting magazine, which for a single, childfree, ultra cool Auntie, is impressive. Thankfully she has back up.
First it’s chocolate, and with Sue’s delicious descriptions I too could imagine the taste of the delights whipped up to diffuse the tensions of the hormonal teenagers trying to come to terms with their family troubles. Then there is Ronan, single Dad to another teenager, handily located next-door, and happy to offer his support to Leah. Let’s face it; what female could resist a man with the combination of the toned body of a helicopter pilot, with a vulnerable side too.
Sue’s characters are vibrant and believable. I loved Leah, who comes across as strong and independent, despite being somewhat coerced into a tricky situation by her sister, who quite frankly I could have slapped. There are many emotions that run strongly throughout the book and that I felt within me as I read; from the confused tears of a teenager coming to grips with adulthood, to the frustrated passions of new love. Sue’s obvious love of Alsace as a location also stands out. It is an area of France I have wanted to visit for a while now and Sue has certainly strengthened my resolve to get there.
This is a great family drama, packed full of fun, love, laughter and tears that needs to be on your holiday packing list this summer.
With more woes than you can shake a French stick at, the learning curves of life and love push these poor characters above and beyond, as they appear to be targets attracting all manner of strife! Not only do they pack up their troubles in “the pig” (a vehicle in case you were wondering), they manage to fill it with a few unforgettable emotional souvenirs.
Forget summer holiday, this vacation is a complete tragedy – in a good way, of course! Never fear, their spirits are raised by good food (Leah has ingredients for every possible scenario), excellent company (namely Ronan and Curtis), and the unpredictable outcome of many, many trials that are set to test every member of their extended, troubled troupe.
This may not my usual reading fare, yet this absurdly chaotic family break ticks all boxes: hugely entertaining family dynamics, the building up and breaking down relationships, sparky romantic interludes, and that special feel-good factor, all narrated at a terrific, punchy pace.
I thought it was great, and quite possibly it’s the most eventful fictional holiday any character may ever have endured – sorry, enjoyed.
(I am grateful to have received a digital copy of this title courtesy of the publisher via Netgalley, which I voluntarily chose to read and review.)
I think this is Sue Moorcroft’s best novel yet – loved the hero (delicious!) and his adolescent son, and really empathised with the poor heroine whose own holiday plans are totally derailed by her thoughtless (and selfish!) sister’s. Families in turmoil following the break-up of marriages are so well portrayed and I really felt for the teenaged children, always the ones to get stuck in the middle. I didn’t want the story to end and the characters have stayed in my mind – always a sign of a brilliant novel!
I've read all of Sue's books and have loved them all. She never disappoints, creating heroes to love, and heroines to empathise with and root for. Her stories contain conflicts and obstacles for her characters to overcome, and this book is no different.
Sue writes with great detail, expression and in such a way you can't help getting absorbed into the story.
This book is a great summer read, just perfect for the holidays!
Just for the holidays by Sue Moorcroft is about a family's holiday in France. Madness, mayhem and teenagers. A good summer escape. I would like to thank the publisher for my free copy of this book.
