They say confession is good for the soul. But, revealing too much could prove deadly.
When devoted governess, Abigail McFadden, discovers her charge has run off to join the Union army on his fourteenth birthday, her impetuous decision to go after him catapults her behind enemy lines and into a life-changing fight for survival.
Failing to locate the boy, Abby is stranded in Confederate Georgia with no means to get home. After taking a nursing position in a confederate hospital in Macon, she comes under suspicion as a union spy. Her only consolation is the work she does outside of the hospital walls in a shanty town of unwanted orphans.
Confederate Officer, Ian Saberton, a theological graduate of Yale, is thrust into war and forced to choose sides. His greatest struggle becomes a fight for his soul as his faith and deep convictions are put to the test.
When Sherman advances on Atlanta, Ian is sent to prepare his home state for enemy invasion. Headquartered in Macon, he encounters a town full of civilians who seem oblivious to the imminent danger bearing down on them. He and his men must see the town secured, all the while avoiding a passel of matchmaking socialites determined to see him married.
Soon, Abby is brought up on false charges and scheduled to be hanged. She has no choice but to trust the handsome Confederate officer who offers a way of escape.
But will deep secrets destroy the fragile bond between them?
Lori is a child of the Southwest. Raised in New Mexico, she now lives in Texas with her husband of 40 years. She has two grown kids, four amazing grandsons, and one nutty little pomeranian named Zuzu.
The writing in this second novel of The Saberton Legacy Series was stronger than the first. I loved the quotes that started each chapter and the amount of historical detail included in the pages. Main characters Ian and Abby were both likable and I adored secondary character Hickory. The romance seemed rushed in places. Overall, a good read and I look forward to the final book of the series.
Very good! I really enjoyed this one, as it had an interesting storyline where the heroine was charged with being a spy for the union army. While much of it was serious subject matter, there were also moments of humor woven throughout. This book really had so much - drama, suspense, humor, and a sweet romance. I am looking forward to the third book in the series.
I was so excited to listen to the second book in this series and I enjoyed it just as much, if not better than the first story! Set near the end of the civil war, when Sherman was making his march of destruction on Georgia, we find Colonel Ian Saberton and Abbie McFadden, a nurse from the North.
Again, this grabbed me quickly with the fabulous narrator and the humor, suspense and historical aspect of the storyline. Abbie has secrets and a heavy burden, while Ian has a few of his own. As these two navigate their way to romance, the supporting characters are amazing. But there is also sadness as the reality of the war is a big part of the journey.
What I really loved was the main story is based in Macon, Georgia and I grew up about 90 miles from it and also from Savannah, so I learned even more of the history..
The major problem I have now, is that book 3 is not on audible! Seriously, I would love to continue on and will have to read the books. I just love audible because it seems the characters come more alive and the scenes more vivid! Loved every second!
I love this series and this author! Since I listened to book 1 on audible, I kept hearing the narrator's voice from book 1 while reading this book! Author Lori Bates Wright is able to tackle real-life issues with the attention they deserve while adding in laugh-out-loud humor, which is a perfect combination and one that I enjoy immensely! I found myself in hysterics when Abby McFadden who has absolutely no talent in the kitchen added Epsom salt to the mashed potatoes instead of regular salt, and the ensuing comedy of errors that occurred with the length the women would go to to try to sneak the plates away from the few soldiers who had mashed potatoes on their plates.
I really enjoyed the quotes at the beginning of each chapter. "A lie that is a half-truth is the darkest of all lies" by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. "No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another" by Charles Dickens. "I try to avoid looking forward or backward, and try to keep looking upward" by Charlotte Bronte. "It's a matter of taking the side of the weak against the strong, something the best people have always done" by Harriet Beecher Stowe.
I really enjoyed Field of Redemption and reading about Ian Saberton and the trials he has been through since I last met him in True Nobility. These wonderful Saberton men and the women they love are at the heart of the Saberton Legacy series, and I love every minute of it. Abby does help Ian "she's spoken from the depths of her heart. He needed to find forgiveness. And strength to forgive himself." But watching the Irish tempered Abby McFadden laugh at the Colonel's orders when his own men would be immediately scrambling to follow his orders made me laugh!
I loved every minute of it and can hardly wait for book #3!!
Field of Redemption is such a gorgeous read! Rich in Historical research and detail, I loved stepping through time to the late 19th century and experiencing the Civil War through nurse Abby (Abigail McFadden) and Officer Ian Saberton's story. This being an audiobook made it an immersive experience, showing everything from the cruel and sad moments of war, to the hope and love that friends and community can provide. Yes, the cast is large, but the narrator does a wonderful job differentiating everyone with their own voice, and I could listen to her for another book or two. 😉 I loved hearing the accents and all the different nuances played in her performance from all the characters (she nailed them all! From tender adoration to trembling and fright, and even downright anger, she delivered it all). I loved the slow burn of Abby and Ian's story, and I looked forward to every single one of their interactions, but I also loved the reminders of God's love, mercy, and forgiveness for us all. I can't recommend this book enough, and now I'm off to look at this author and narrator's other work. ~ 5 stars!
This is only the second book I have read by this author, and I am hooked. The first one was a great read, and she only got better with this one.
Book #2 features another Saberton brother, Ian....and the many adventures he and his romantic interest, Abby had. This was a truly awesome read. A lot happened in this one, especially with it being set during the Civil War. Both main characters were beyond likable, and I liked them even more than Nicholas and Tori in book #1.
The book was engaging, entertaining, romantic, suspenseful, and had its humorous moments....such as events including a bucket of water, and another including mashed potatoes and salt.
A very minor character from the first book, nine year old Hickory, was also in this book and played a greater part in the story. He was a very loveable character, and it was awesome what happened with him at the end of the book.
The narrator, Austenne Grey, did a fabulous job with this engaging story. She did great character voices and reflected the action of the story very well. Her voice was pleasant and made listening easy. This historical fiction was well researched and realistic. I absolutely loved these characters and their story. As the Civil War drags on, hardships continue for everyone. Yet as these characters press on, lessons are learned. The romantic thread ties this book together in such a beautiful way. I also really appreciated the quotes that begin each chapter because they related to the story wonderfully. I’m glad that I didn’t miss this story. I was given a copy of this audio book. All opinions are my own.
All of the time I was listening to this book, I felt like I was getting new a perspective on this period of the Civil War. The characters were real and the situations they faced seemed more real. Abby was a northern woman in the south which put her in a unique and dangerous position. But no matter, she strived to be kind and helpful to the Confederate people and soldiers. Ian, a Confederate Colonel, became her protector. There is adventure, romance, mystery in this story. It was the perfect companion of another book in this series that I had previously listened to. I want to get more!
The narrator, Austenne Grey does a great job, as always. A good narrator truly enhances the story!
I requested this audio book from the author and am voluntarily leaving this review.
I listened to the audiobook of this story. The narrator was good. My only complaint would be that the story was long, but it served a purpose to give us all a different viewpoint of the war. Abigail took off looking for her charge, into Confederate Georgia and when she is stranded there with no way home to the North, she starts working in the hospital. This also let's her help the forgotten orphans in the shantytown. She meets Ian Saberton here in Macon. They are both taken with each other, but they must learn to trust. As the war rages on the field, it also rages closer to home. The author does a fine job of describing the civil war, from both sides. I was given a copy of this book by the author for an honest review.
This is the first book I’ve read to by this author and I was very happy with it! The story was interesting and informative. I loved the main characters and enjoyed seeing their relationship grow. I loved that there were Christian themes throughout but it wasn’t overly preachy and irritating. If you like Civil War books you will enjoy this one. I was able to listen to the audiobook and the narrator was awesome- she had great voices for all the characters and she had a soothing voice. I can’t wait to read more from this author.
The Saberton family attached themselves to me in book one and continued to grow in my heart in book two. Lori Bates Wright is a talented author; tackling real life issues, writing about a very painful time in American history but from a little different viewpoint than a lot of civil war books I’ve read. I enjoyed the humor she sprinkled throughout the book at just the right times. I definitely recommend this book to Civil War era fiction fans.
This was a good book. It contained a good mix of history, romance and suspense to keep reader engaged and trying to figure out what happens next. Some surprises are thrown in a long the way, but the ending was just what I'd hoped for
The narrative was well done.
I received a free copy of this audiobook and I am voluntarily leaving my review.
This was a good read. I enjoyed the storyline and Abby was a great character. There was a jaw dropping surprise in the story which made for a fun twist in the story. Excited for book 3!
I received this book from the author and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.
I really enjoyed the first book of this series. I'm not really one to read stories set around war time, so it took me a while to get into this book. This was Ian and Abbey's story, but I was pleased to see the other family members appear in this book too. Now off to look at the last book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I absolutely enjoyed this book. It was very touching, the characters grows on you, and I look forwards to seeing more of the Saberton family and their journey.
Loved this story.....well researched and entertaining thank you for another great read,..Keep writing you're so talented and using your God given talents to spread His word. You're blessed.
•°o•:*:•. Interesting & Different Civil War Era Story .•:*:• o°• Macon, GA 1864 Abigail McFadden is a “Yankee” nurse serving in the South. Her priority is people, whether on the battlefield, makeshift hospital ward or living on the edge of society in the shantytown. She has had to start over, and nearly everyone in Macon has been kind and giving to her. Save for the power-hungry General Farris who is attempting to convince everyone she is a Union spy. Colonel Ian Saberton is a strong, confident leader. However, he is rather unprepared for a town full of women who demand to be heard and useful in this war. They have strong ideas, but over time he discovers one in particular needs his help to avoid an unjust hanging. The more involved he becomes, the more he learns about who Abby is and how strong her faith is. Faith is something he’s put on the shelf since the war started, leading him down a path of destruction. Favorite Quote: Ch. 9 “Abby McFadden was a most peculiar female. Whatever circumstance she got herself into, she acted with all of her heart.” Young Hickory has returned from book 1 and takes an active role in the story. He is a wonderful character who is clever, cautious but still happy to be a kid when there is an opportunity despite hardship and loss. The evil side of men is shown throughout the story, so if you enjoy a strong sense of danger without too much gory detail, this book offers it. It is countered with Ian’s conviction to serve, protect and conquer injustice at every turn. The more personal details of what people are worried about and dealing with in wartime were interesting, particularly since this book is told primarily from the southern point of view, and I did enjoy it. The scene with the Georgia peaches was a particular favorite.
Sierra Vista Books – 07/23/2019 The author sent me a complimentary book in the hopes of a favorable review. I was not paid for my opinions which are entirely mine.
The Saberton Legacy: 1. True Nobility, Nicholas Saberton and Victoria’s story 2. Field of Redemption, Ian Saberton and Abigail’s story 3. Book 3, Zachary Saberton and Aurora’s story, coming soon

Fabulous book!
Miss Lori did an amazing job with Field of Redemption! While some parts were slow, this book had me turning the page to find out what happened next. Abby is a kind, sweet woman and a perfect fit for Ian, though it takes her awhile to come to that conclusion. Ian is everything you would want in a hero. Strong, sweet, but firm when needed. He comes to her rescue time and again. Let's not forget the wonderful ladies in this book! They are fierce, but sweet, and they aren't afraid to speak to your mother when you don't do as they tell you. This book has many surprises and some come from deep within but are made with love for home, family, and friends. You won't be disappointed with Field of Redemption.
Taking place in Georgia during The Civil War, the second installment of The Saberton Legacy centers on Colonel Ian Saberton and Abigail McFadden, a transplanted Yankee from Ohio who is now a nurse. Their acquaintance begins humorously when the swoon-worthy hero mistakes the beautiful heroine for a prostitute and she throws a bucket of water on him.
Abbie and Ian are wonderful together. There are some laugh-out-loud episodes in this book, usually at Abbie's expense. Cooking is not her forte, as evidenced by her accidentally adding a pound of Epsom Salts to mashed potatoes. She forgets her own name when being properly introduced to the Colonel, and once she sews an embroidery hoop to her gown. As domestically inept as she is, she is loving and devoted to orphans, caring and patient with wounded soldiers. She treats "soiled doves" with equal fondness and dedication.
There are serious moments as well. Farris, a corrupt Confederate General, tries throughout the novel to have Abbie killed. "War is hell", indeed.
The history is well-researched. Before Atlanta, Milledgeville was the state capital, and another town before that.
While I enjoy Lori Bates Wright's prose, there were many grammatical errors that took me out of the story, (more than in "True Nobility"), hence my 4-star rating. There was "miss understand", instead of "misunderstand", or "moral" instead of "morale". "Immanent" was used instead of imminent", and "callus" should have been "callous". There are missing and/or extra words, and commas can be our friends.
This is a Christian novel, with gentle themes of acceptance and of course redemption, but it is not overly preachy.
I am looking forward to Zach's, and I assume Aurora's story. Please get a competent editor for their tale! This one appears to have merely been spell-checked.
So, first of all this is the first book that I've read by Ms. Wright and secondly, I have found a new favorite author. This book is so good it makes me want to read more of her work and the cover is absolutely gorgeous, isn't it?
I didn't read the first book in the series but that certainly did not stop me from getting caught up in the lives of Abigail McFadden and Ian Saberton. They are wonderful characters separately and together. There are several secondary characters who rounded out this well researched and wonderful novel. I found myself laughing and smiling at the antics of Abby and her friends which was unexpected but definitely appreciated..
I am anxious to see what the author has next for her readers because I am ready to read another one of her books. I received a complimentary copy of this book but was under no obligation to write a review. All opinions are my own.
With Field of Redemption, author Lori Bates Wright has penned another fabulous and compelling novel that will keep you thinking about it long after you turn the last page. Steeped in history and taking place in Georgia, Book 2 of the Saberton Legacy series examines the Civil War from both sides of the conflict, revealing the many difficult challenges faced by people from all walks of life. Along with a sweet romance that develops between the hero and heroine, Field of Redemption contains riveting action, interesting dialogue, and even a touch of humor! Throughout all the action, the novel sheds a bright light on the concepts of God’s love and forgiveness. I highly recommend this book and can’t wait to read more from this author! The publisher provided me a copy of this book. All opinions in this review are my own.
Lori Bates has done a fabulous job with this book. I loved how she painted the scenes in this book so vividly that I felt like I was with Abby and Ian. I felt sorry for Abby at first but then I realized she has what it takes for survival of the fittest. Ian does too and that's why I liked them both so much. I think this story has wonderful supporting characters and I really enjoyed in getting to know them too. There is some romance, humor and a lot of fighting going on. But of course this is the Civil War. I'm glad that Lori didnt beat around the bush so to speak. She has brought the Civil War back to life for us.
I had been pleasantly surprised by “True Nobility”, the first book of the Saberton Legacy. I wasn’t much of a romance reader, but I enjoyed it and even laughed out loud at one point, and that was a first when reading! I came to “Field of Redemption” with high hopes. I must say, Lori Bates Wright has done it again! Not only is this a wonderful love story, but it it’s fraught with danger, prejudice, and spunk! My interest was kept throughout and I even found myself laughing out loud again! Twice! Yep! Good book. Go get it!
I couldn't wait to be swept away into Ian and Abby's story! this book is so full of detail that the story just comes to life! I have really been enjoying the Saberton brothers since they were first introduced. I'm really looking forward to reading the next book! Lori Bates Wright did an excellent job describing how life was during the Civil War. I highly recommend this book and this series.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and continuing the story through the civil war and happenings in the Georgia area Great characters and how they responded to events was engaging
Some of the craziness of that war remind me of things happening in today’s world. I pray our country will learn from history and course correct before we repeat it.
I am a fan of historical fiction and particularly where the author has done their research and gets the historical facts right. Lori Bates Wright did a great job on the historical content and writes in a way that has you eagerly anticipating the next chapter. I would highly recommend this novel, the story is captivating and well written.
Can't wait for book 3 after loving the first two so much! It was hard to get my work at home done as It kept me wondering what would happen next in this finely woven story.
If you love history and moral questions, as well as love and bravery, this book will NOT disappoint. I cannot wait for the writer to complete another!
