Lost In The Mist Of Time

Rate this book
Aislinn Hennessy pens tales of courage, loyalty, and true love, but her heroes of old are pure fantasy—figments of her imagination. She long ago gave up thinking a knight in shining armor would sweep her off her feet, but then she never expected to run him off the road either. Sir Dougray Fitzpatrick has buried one wife and vows to never love again—but destiny has other plans for this 16th century Irish Lord. During a battle, a mist separates Dougray from his men and casts him into the future. Dougray must return to Dunhaven and to his century, but Aislinn follows him into the mist, leaving him no choice, but to take her home with him. Conspiracies, feuds and unexpected violence are commonplace threats, but along the way, Aislinn and Dougray discover a surprise neither one a chance for love even when they're Lost in the Mist of Time.

I would have given this book more stars because the time travel storyline, the mystery and intrigue contained within was very good. However, at least 150 pages could have easily been cut out. Actually, it would have improved the book tremendously.

The constant bickering, antagonism and ridiculous fighting between the hero and heroine went on and on and on and on. The mistrust and stubbornness of the two main characters could have been established in a far more effective way than beating that dead horse over the head, repeatedly. Not only beating it over the head, but then coming back and kicking it several times after it was already dead. In print, the book is 550 pages. It was not necessary to keep up this tiresome theme.

Once you got past that, and it took a long time to get past that (at least 150 pages, if not more), the story picked up and was very good. I enjoyed reading the history of Ireland and the clan system that was present in the time period. I'd love to read more books with Ireland as the background.

What a brilliant read !!!

Written beautifully and with such clarity that takes you on a wonderful journey back in time with a modern twist. loved the bantering between hero and heroine its funny witty and had me giggling and anticipating each turn of the page. It is 500 pages a long book but even then it was too short I didnt want it to end. If you like Historical fiction with a modern twist of time travel some suspense of the who did it type but not over the top this is the book for you. I read somewhere that you dont find some books find you and this one certainty did. Highly recommend it I gave it five stars because I couldn't give it anymore :)

DNF at 33%.

Here's a little known(I guess everybody knows now) fact about me: my #1 fantasy is finding a time machine. Or stumbling through a magical time portal. Or wandering though the mists of time only to find myself in another century. (Except I think I've already said my #1 fantasy is winning the lottery and using the money to quit my job and travel the whole world looking for birds. Which would make the time travel thing my #2 fantasy. But I never buy lottery tickets. So I guess that makes both fantasies equally likely to come true.)

So anyway (that was a long digression), at some point this book ended up on my TBR list, and because it's really cheap, it ended up on my kindle, and now that I've (mostly!) completed all of my reading challenges, it's time to clean out the kindle. And at first I liked it. Dougray is an Irish lord from the 1500s and Aislinn (a.k.a. AJ) is a romance novelist from our era on vacay in Ireland and then the mists of time things happen and...boom!...she's back in Dougray's time.

Things started to go downhill at around 11% in, when we learn that A.J. is really, really feisty. In fact, she likes to solve all her disagreements (apparently) by punching and yelling. And Dougray is like, wow, I do like me a feisty chick. Even though he's the one she's been punching and yelling at, and for a time he has to resort to slinging her over his shoulder and slapping her bottom to get her to settle down. So for the record, I do *not* like feisty heroines, because it usually means they start snarking and slapping at the smallest provocation, and I guess I just can't relate.

But the writing style was fine, and the story was otherwise entertaining, and I kept reading, and the annoying tropes kept coming. Such as:

1. Hero pondering how special A.J. is and how she's just not like all the other girls. Nope, she's really smart and feisty, and he can even have a conversation with her. Unlike his dead wife, he loved her of course...but not so much to talk to.

2. Heroine writes "smut" books and has dated a lot of beta males, but she's just secretly waiting for a man she can't walk all over...and she's still "untouched"! Even though she's like thirty or something. And writes smut books. But she's been waiting for her one true love.

3. Heroine meets Fiona, Dougray's side chick, and immediately starts snarking about the blonde with big boobs. Because of course busty blondes and "boyish" brunettes are nature's natural enemies.

4. Despite the fact that A.J. is completely unconventional and insists on doing her own thing, all the time, with lots of snark and slapping along the way, literally every male in the castle is soon reflecting on how wonderful she is and how she's just not like all the other girls.

All of this was starting to work my last nerve, but I persevered, because lately I DNF at the drop of a hat, I kept reading. It was all vaguely entertaining, and apart from a few editing errors, I couldn't fault the writing style.

Heroine stands up for a bullied kid and starts training him to be a warrior...okay, I'll keep reading.
Heroine decides to knot sheets together and rappel down the castle wall...okay, I'll keep reading.
Heroine slaps hero in front of his people and yells at him for no reason (she's his guest and he's just trying to look out for her safety) and he's cool with it 'cause she's just so feisty and not like the other girls...okay, I'll keep reading.

Until all of a sudden, I realized that I completely loathe this heroine and if I have to spent one more minute in her company, I might start punching and yelling at my kindle. And then I DNF'ed.

On a more serious note (not that this is a serious book), I didn't understand why--once the fact that she was really stuck centuries in the past sank in for her--A.J. didn't completely freak out. Or have some profound feeling of awe. Or suffer the slightest bit of culture shock. She just immediately rolled up her sleeves, had one of the serving women start sewing her a pair of "trews" (a dress for A.J.? Wasn't it clear she's not like the other girls?), and began improving everyone's hygiene and self esteem with her modern knowledge and can-do attitude. I mean, I think I've suffered more "culture shock" just moving to a new state, like my brief time in Arkansas...let alone when I've actually lived in other countries!

Two stars 'cause it was readable and probably other people would get a real kick out of it. Just not for me.

If I could give it less than a one star review I would. In my 40 years of being an avid reader I have only one other time not finished a book I started. And that’s because I lost it and didn’t want to bother. This book is awful. The characters and their dialogue sound like a middle schooler created them. It’s repetitive and boring. I tired skimming (which is something I’ve only done once before to get through a book quicker) and it was still too painful. I cannot imagine how it has almost a 4 start rating???

I had a really good time with this novel. It was lengthy enough to give me hours of reading pleasure, and also presented me with the opportunity to imagine what it would be like to travel back in time several centuries. The author's research into Ireland was rich and detailed, and the characters were memorable and engaging. I really liked Lost in the Mist of Time. You can't go wrong with this one!

Hand on heart it's one of the best (if not the best) books I ever read. Anyone who loves time travel and books set in Ireland of long ago, I advise you to rush out and buy it immediately.

Characterization and historical detail make this an interesting read. What I found intriguing was that the time travel wasn't just one way. Not only did we have the adjustments made by an independent modern woman to accommodate medieval life (and the ways she refused to), but we saw a medieval laird introduced to his homeland in contemporary times. The one drawback was I would have liked the hero and heroine's stubbornness to become less strident as the story progressed. Still a good read and am looking forward to reading more time travel tales from this author.

Airline was an irritating know it all. She is in a different time, a different country but still thinks she didn't need to listen or take help or advice from others.
There is something to be said about a strong female character. Strong doesn't have to mean stupid.
The storyline would have been better if she didn't annoy me like she did.

Alas, I must stop reading this book. I thought I had done my research on Goodreads about whether this was squeaky clean. I suppose some would say it is relatively speaking but I don't think it is quite. So despite being into the story, I am stopping my reading. Sigh.

Aislinn Hennessy is a fiercely independent modern woman with a questionable taste in men. No man in her world lived up to the men she envisioned in her highly successful romance novels. Sir Dougray Fitzpatrick, a handsome Lord in sixteenth century Ireland, has no desire to replace the wife he buried. But he is haunted by a seer's prediction that he will visit the future to seek a vision that will determine his future born.

When Aislinn visits modern day Ireland with her parents, she encounters a man who seems lost and confused. When he remembers his name and purpose, Dougray attempts to return to his own time by entering a magical mist. Aislinn follows and finds herself stuck in old Ireland, where violence is common and women are expected to be submissive to men. Deeply attracted but fighting each other at every turn, they dance around a relationship, experiencing emotions of admiration, anger, frustration, and fear. Will they discover a chance for everlasting love?

The author has created a world of myth, romance, and family secrets, historically set in sixteenth century Ireland. The characters are believable and the description of castle life is delightful. "Lost in the Mist of Time" is a must read for those interested in historical romance with a touch of the paranormal.

I love this story! I won't get into the plot--it's been well covered.

Nutt can really write characters--the two main characters were fully fleshed out. The supporting cast of characters were an entertaining bunch, from the best friends and family, right to the villains. The Irish history is fascinating.

I was so immersed in this story (nearly 500 pages of it)that when I read the last page, a letdown feeling set in. I really like it when a book can do that to me--make me suspend my disbelief to the point that reality fades while I'm reading. I enjoyed being in the world the author created. Truly magical.

In fairness to readers who are looking for perfection, I'll add that there are a few misspelled words, and several missing words. I did read in another review that the book went on and on and on. Perhaps the reader felt that way because the story arc isn't necessarily a straight line from point to point. It meanders. But for me, the story was so engaging, that even the meandering was incredibly entertaining.

I will be reading more of Nutt's books.

The sense of story is so strong in this book that the few typos I mentioned aren't enough to subtract even half of a star-- 5 stars.

Author gave up on last half of book

This book had many grammatical errors. You can work past this if there is a good enough story. However, this book did not. It started off promising with a strong female lead. However, that did not last long. The characters became very annoying with the constant, and unnecessary, theme of Dougray and A.J. are both soooo pigheaded that they can't see that they love each other and so keep hurting one another. For the entire last half of the book. There's only so much of this a person can read before writing the characters off as complete idiots.

This book the first half I honistly thought yes is heading towards 5stars but then the couple needed some serious counciling in the second half and it lost its place in stars because 1) argues way way to much 2) slightly repetitive as we no she's not used to that century,he likes her then hates her, looks like a boy , tall slim, mentioned about 100times and everyone has the same dialogue to each other that we have to read 3) I just couldn't forgive dougray for abandoning her when she needed him most
Otherwise it was a really good book it was an interesting read and the ending was good but about 100s could have been summed up with out so much arguing between the couple.

I love strong female characters, but having said that, I wanted to reach through my kindle and punch Aislinn through most of this book. It was a beautiful story and story line but both her's and Dougray's stubborness or whatever you want to call it drove me nuts. And then when she did decide to love him, it was a complete 180. On one page she was yelling at him and the next page she was making love to him. This book could have been alot shorter and I think just as detailed if the characters weren't so difficult.

I finished reading Lost in the Mist of Time just now. I have mixed feelings on this one, the first half of the book was full of typos and grammatical errors, but the last half was much improved. The story seemed to drag in the middle, but the beginning and the end were excellent. I think the author needs a new editor. I really did like the story line, though I almost gave up because of the grammar issues. 3.5 stars

I was looking for a time travel romance and decided to give this a shot. I probably would have rated this higher if it wasn't for one thing. I really really did not like the heroine for most of the book. I understand the need to be independent and everything but really? She was so annoying I just wanted to smack her. Dougary was just trying to protect her but she just would not listen. Also, if she had done what she had done in real life she would have been burned at the stake.

The first time I read this book by myself (not having my mom read it aloud to my aunt, sister and I) was probably around 8th grade. It was the first time I could really enjoy it. Soaking in all the words, the story, the friendship, and the romance. I just really love my mom's books. I hope she never stops writing so I can never stop reading the wonderful worlds she imagines up.

Loved this story. Excellent main characters. Fell in love with all the characters. Fabulous story telling. It's nice to have a book hat is long enough & interesting enough that it consumes a few days. The Author wrote so her audience could feel the passion, annoyance, pain, & frustration of the characters. I cried & laughed & got the chills at some parts. Anxious to find more by this author.

Another good historical fiction book to enjoy. The back and forth banter between the two stubborn main characters really drags out; you kind of feel frustrated to read another argument between the two as the book progresses. I became seriously annoyed by the female main character very quickly! But the overall story is well written.

Excellent, this story takes you to another time in Ireland a love and adventure story that holds your attention. It reminds me of the fairy tails I read when I was a child. I can't put it down yet don't want it to end so I'm taking my time reading it.

Absolutely wonderful

I couldn't put it down. I loved that the heroine is a strong and capable woman, damsels in distress are rather monotonous. I have laughed and cried. Will be definitely reading another book by this author.
