“Flower Vase” is yet another entertainment novel by 困倚危楼, the same author of The Missing Piece, As an Elder Brother, and Ex-Boyfriend. While The Missing Piece and Ex-Boyfriend felt fairly average to me, As an Elder Brother stands out as one of my favorite reads of 2023; though it just missed my top 10, securing a solid 12th place on my list.
When I saw that Flower Vase was from 困倚危楼, I was genuinely excited. The line from the synopsis, “He’s only acted out one play properly in his life. That was to pretend he didn’t love that person,” immediately drew me in and set high expectations for the story. Without further ado, I read it in two sittings. That’s how good it was, in my opinion.
The angst was there, and so was the bittersweetness and the black-bellied plot. It was a combination of everything I generally enjoy reading, and Flower Vase delivered it all. The story started angsty, turned dramatic, and in the end became comedic, with plot twists all throughout.
The novel consists of two volumes. The first volume is filled with angst, pain, and the end of the sugar daddy relationship between the characters. The second volume takes us through the wife-chasing crematorium, where the truth is slowly revealed.
The main character, Gui Yan, was nonchalant and aloof, as if nothing could move or affect him. In reality, his defense was too thick for anyone to break through and see the pain and sufferings he had endured. This added depth to his character, making his struggles resonate all the more.
On the other hand, the main lead, Qin Zhiyuan, was honestly a fool blinded by love, yet a complete coward. He was wishy-washy and indecisive when it came to love, a stark contrast to how decisive and capable he was in his work. In the end, Gui Yan was the one who got away because Qin Zhiyuan took him for granted.
To be honest, both Gui Yan and Qin Zhiyuan are red flags in my opinion. Gui Yan was very manipulative, and Qin Zhiyuan acted like a stalker with how he kept pestering Gui Yan. But they both knew each other’s flaws and accepted the other party for who they were. I guess that’s true love.
I would suggest reading this novel blind. Don’t even glance at the synopsis, just dive right in. There were a lot of surprises throughout the novel, and the synopsis will spoil a bit of that, which ruins the joy of reading Flower Vase.
