[I was fortunate to read an early, prepublication copy of this book]
Tatum Flynn has done it again! In a wonderful sequel to her debut novel, The D'Evil Diaries, she returns us to Hell—but in a completely good way! Back are Jinx, the youngest son of the Devil, and Tommy, the circus girl who ended up in Hell by accident (and you thought you were having a bad day). They're off on another adventure that will pit them against the worst eternal damnation has to offer (which, you know, even relatively speaking is pretty scary stuff).
What I like most about Flynn is how her storytelling so naturally blends laugh-out-loud humour with genuine drama, meaning you'll cackle with glee every time the characters get themselves into trouble, but you'll feel for them at the same time. And Flynn has imagination to spare in her weird and wonderful descriptions (I'm just going to say "kittens" here and let you find out for yourself). Move over Dante, there's a new sheriff in town!—er, if the sheriff has horns and the town includes an eerie Black Lake that even the demonic residents of Hell do their best to avoid.
Bottom line, our kids loved the first book, and I can't wait to share this one with them too. If you're looking for a heartwarming, unconventional MG story with lots of laughs, look no further!

This book is even better than the first one in it's series, capitalizing on an amazing setting that feels so alive and rich it is practically a character itself; and with alternating narrators who are each distinct and humorous in their own ways, this book is one "hell" of a read. It had me cackling, gasping, and grinning like an idiot. Sometimes all at once. I don't recommended chewing anything you can choke on while reading this book -- you will be laughing too much, and trust me, you will want to live long enough to get to the end!
It's a touching book that manages to tug at your heartstrings and speak to all our deepest fears and insecurities, all while inspiring, encouraging, and massively entertaining you.
This is a must-read for anyone who knows what's good for them.
And even if you don't know what's good for you, I'M telling you this book will be good for you -- so there.
It's a very quick read, too, and holds equal appeal for adults as it does for young readers, which is such a rare find.

I LOVE this book. I read the first in the series last year, so I knew that I was in for a lot of fun, but this was even better. The plot was great (who doesn't like a competition?), the world-building was superb, Potteresque even, the weaving in of mythology was done brilliantly, but the best part was the humour. In Flynn's superb deadpan style, this book made me laugh way too much for someone a very long way from the age of the target audience.
I was really sorry to get to the end and Leave Jinx and Tommy, but Flynn does leave the ending open for a third. So, if you're listening, Orchard, yes please!

Adored this. Such a fun new story, with some really solid additions to the mythology that add a lot of depth to the series and to Tommy as a character. Definitely a sequel done right.

Honestly just kind of a random one I picked up and didn’t think I would think much of but I really enjoyed this and would read more books in this series if I come across them in future

Hell's Belles is the sequel to The D'Evil Diaries, which I reviewed last year and thoroughly enjoyed. Fans of the original will be glad to know that Hell's Belles is more of the same, with an extra twist - this time, the main character is Tommy, the only human child in the underworld, and Jinx's best friend.
She was one of the best parts of the original, so it's great to see her spread her wings in the sequel - but fans of Jinx won't miss out, either, as he gets a few chapters to himself. (As the book is told in the first person, it's just a teeny bit discombobulating when the viewpoint switches from Tommy to Jinx, but you quickly get used to it.)
As the title suggests, the women of the underworld are front and centre in this story. Tommy is worried about her position in Hell, especially now that Jinx's mother, Persephone, known as the Terror of the Boneheads, is on her way back to the underworld. As a bonehead herself, Tommy is understandably worried about Persephone's reaction to her son having a bonehead as his best friend.
Also on the scene is Lilith, Lucifer's first wife (which makes her Jinx's stepmum or something). She's back in hell for some mysterious reasons of her own - and given her son was involved in a plot to overthrow Lucifer (see the previous book) there's not much chance those reasons are benign.
And then there's Pandora, the mythical woman with the box containing all the world's evils. What does she have to do with Tommy?
When Lilith sets up a contest to become her assistant, Tommy sees it as an opportunity to fit in; but is it all a big mistake? Will there be danger, excitement, shenanigans, and mysteries?
Of course there will!
As before, Ms Flynn juggles an exciting plot with terrific humour with ease. My favourite character, Loiter the demon of Sloth (who appears as a giant sloth) is on hand to dispense wisdom and wisecracks, and the relationship between Tommy and Jinx provides plenty of drama and funny lines.
The artwork, once again by Dave Shephard, complements the text perfectly, full of energy and humour. His pictures of Loiter are fantastic, and he does a nice line in demonic hell-kittens that makes me grin.
One of the things I like about these books is the eclectic approach to mythology - while obviously based on the Miltonian fallen angel Lucifer, there are big chunks of Greek/Roman myth in there too (with Persephone and Pandora) and also elements of Sumerian mythology (to which the Jewish myth of Lilith might be related) all mixed up with inventions like shocktopuses and dreadbeasts. And it all works as a coherent whole, despite the disparate origins of the parts.
Funny, exciting, clever, and charming - this is an excellent sequel that bode well for the future adventures of Jinx and Tommy.

Имам я почти от деня, в който излезе. Но може би защото първата част ми хареса толкова много, а после чаках тази цели три години, сега нарочно не бързах да започна четенето й. От дете имам този навик - нарочно да отлагам удоволствието, та после да е още по-хубаво.
И се оказа, че си е струвало. Тази книга ми осигури ден и половина наслада, забавление, напрежение, предположения и догадки. С една дума - беше всичко, което човек може да иска от една хубава книга "за млади читатели."
Ама, чакай малко - може би ще кажете. Ти къде се буташ при младите читатели?
Я пак погледнете кавичките.
Винаги съм мислила, че оста разделения са малко или много условни, в този случай - просто за да знае човек къде да потърси тази книга. Но когато една книга стигне с нещо до сърцето на читателя, накара го да се забавлява или да тъгува, да се смее или да плаче, да изпитва нещо към персонажите, то тогава едва ли има значение в кой точно раздел е "класирана". Тя е намерила пътя си до този читател и двамата са се разбрали.
И така. Който е чел първата книга, знае кой е Джинкс Д'Явол. Най-малкият син на Луцифер, на когото обаче хич не му идва отвътре да бъде зъл. От което съответно си пати жестоко.
Във втората книга Джинкс и компания се забъркват в още по-големи приключения и... добре де... ами.. истински адски неприятности. Както се полага в Ада. И, повярвайте ми, ако не знаех, че повече книги няма да има, щях да съм убедена, че никой от основните персонажи няма да оцелее. Но все пак те разказват историята, та.. нямаше как.
С тази книга ще се спускате в зловещи, по-зловещи и най-зловещи мини, ще бягате от зверилища, ще плавате през черни езера. А, да - и съкровища ще търсите. И още доста страховити приключения... оцеляването от които хич, ама хич не е гарантирано.
Книгата ми хареса много, всъщност повече от първата. Горещо /ама все пак не толкова горещо като жупел/ я препоръчвам на всички млади и не чак толкова млади читатели. Ако сте се уморили от сериозни книги - тя е за вас. Ако не сте - пак е за вас, защото за една забавна и вълнуваща книга винаги може да се намери време и място.

I should have read the first book before this one! A very interesting idea to send a child to hell and have friendly Demons. A little bit scary and a fair bit of fun. I imagine children would like this very much. I have to say I really did not like the concept of having each chapter headed by a particular character. I couldn't really see the need for this. I was constantly having to look up and check again to see who this particular person was. It Became annoying fast. I don't think a good writer needs to do that.

That was a great sequel. I couldn't put it down, I was so engrossed in Jinx and Tommy's new adventures. And a contest! I've always had a soft spot for contests, even if that's not the central theme here.
I loved the alternating points of view, they added depth and variety to the experience, and made Tommy's character much more authentic. I also liked the glimpses into Lucifer's character: he turned out to be so much more than the feared-by-all, golf-playing Master of Hell. And Jinx, he's his usual clumsy, unlucky-as-hell, in-need-of-a-rescue, adorable self. If I were twelve, I'd definitely be in love with him by now.
If I had to find fault with this book, it would be that it's way too short. Tatum Flynn should take a leaf out of J. K. Rowling's book and make each new sequel longer than the last; fans shouldn't be able to devour them in half a day. It's just not fair to reach the end do soon!
Speaking of the ending ... I'm such a sucker for happy family scenes. And an idea for the next books: I'd love to see Jinx and Tommy going to school together; teaming up against the bullies, cheating on tests and what not. What special subjects do demon kids take? Perhaps they have their own sport? Sorry I keep coming up with ideas from Harry Potter, but I do love the whole magic school atmosphere. So let's have a peek in the classroom, please!

Изминаха близо три години откакто прочетох „Жупел за закуска. Дневниците на един Д`Явол”, дебютният роман на Тейтъм Флин, в който най-малкият син на Луцифер преживява куп пиперливи тийн приключения. Дълго очаквах продължението и май вече почти го бях отписал, но явно все пак не съм бил единственият фен на оригинала, защото от изд. „Сиела” най-накрая ни зарадваха с „Дяволици-хубавици. Дневниците на един Д'Явол 2”. Уви, и този път няма ни най-малка вероятност младият Джинкс Д'Явол да оправдае очакванията на тираничния си татко. This is the first book that made me gasp when I read the plot twist. The only reason why I bought it was because it was only five Euro at the bookstore. I didn't expect much...
But WOW!
I didn't even realize when it ended! After that amazing read I immediately bought the first book, because I first got the second book. I'm currently reading the first one and I hope it's as good as this one.

Страшно готина книжка. Изпълнена с приключенията на две деца и показваща силата на приятелството.
Напомни ми, че децата са изключително искрени и чисти, въпреки че често правят бели, но за нищо на света не биха предали истински приятел и скачат в огъня винаги хванати за ръце.

I was hooked from the first page of Hell’s Belles that opens with a letter from the main character Jinx to his mum Persephone, with all the awkwardness of a pre-teenage boy missing his mother but trying not to show it.
Not that Jinx is a soppy character, mind you. After all, he has some hellish tasks to perform that involves stealing eggs from zombie eagles, escaping giant horned galloping hell beasts, fighting off flame monsters and killer kittens – while on a hell-raising expedition with his human friend Tommy, sent on a devilish competition by Lucifer’s evil ex-wife Lilith.
I loved the very clever puns scattered around the book, such as Sinday for Sunday or Moanday for Monday for the days of the week, or when it comes to some hellish shopping, Damnazon for Amazon or Miss Selfish for Miss Selfridges, etc. Chuckled to read how Lucifer got the idea of celebrating Saturnalia, the equivalent of Christmas in Hell, after getting letters from kids writing to Father Christmas and misspelling Santa for Satan!
A very original, funny and gripping adventure-filled book by a clever and imaginative writer, written from the point of view of both main characters, Jinx and Tommy. Hell's Belles is the second book in The D'Evil Diaries series, and even better than the first one!

I have procrastinated over this book for the last 2 months, which is the exact amount of time that I have had it checked out from the library. I couldn't get it started and I kept finding something better to read... when really this book is pretty interesting.
We find out more about Hell and Tommy plus there is also Sparky a shocktopus which sounds like the cutest creature on the planet.
Once I had gotten into it, I found that I finished the book quite quickly so the book is very interesting. There are a few pop culture references such as friends and star wars.
The end was really beautiful too. Who knew the devil was such a big softy.

Absolutely phenomenal follow-up to THE D'EVIL DIARIES - I adored this second outing with Jinx and Tommy, which was just as devilishly funny and full of adventure as the first in the series. Brilliant, witty middle grade fun!
