I’ve just finished ShipMates and as someone who works closely with the Royal Navy have been impressed with the access and honesty this account presents. It’s almost an induction to the Royal Navy given the breadth of its focus so for anyone not sure what the modern Royal Navy does, this is definitely worth a read.

What adds to this account is that Chris doesn’t shy away from some of the more controversial elements of the time, namely Defence Spending, boisterous runs ashore and for the uninitiated, boisterous celebrations of Naval history. It’s warts and all.

It may be a few years old but it doesn’t matter and for any veteran matelot uncertain about picking this up you’d see the development and transition of the Royal Navy but still recognise the camaraderie and focus on your shipmates.
