Captive Mates is the first book in the action-packed Dragon Warrior scifi alien romance series. If you like possessive alpha shifters, action-adventure romance, and kick-butt heroines, then you’ll adore M.L. Guida’s stories of resiliency.
Vampires, demons and witches! I love to write about these dark entities and the darker the better. My characters are plunged into worlds where they experience torture and mayhem, but even in a world of darkness, true love survives. I write both, sci-fi, contemporary and historical paranormal stories.
I think the notion of fated mates makes a reader easily get into a plausible love story between this modern dragon and a Scottish sleeping beauty. Definitely makes you want to keep reading!
Contains subject matter that may be a trigger or offensive to some including adult language and violence.
I love that this story is connected to another series by M.L. Guida (Zalaria), but it felt like I was missing a lot, because this story also has threads from another series by multiple authors (Magic New Mexico).
Sorry if that sounds confusing, so I will try to explain. The heroine and her two sisters have been placed under a spell that can only be broken by a kiss from their true mate. This occurred during one of the Magic New Mexico stories. The background is kind of explained, but it would have felt more satisfying if I could have read those stories. Unfortunately they are not in KU. Her true mate is one of three brothers that are dragon shifters from Zalaria.
I gave the story 4 stars because of the action and storyline. The lines from the heroine can be a little hard to interpret at times due to the heavy brogue used.
For me it felt shallow. I can't pin down exactly why I didn't care for this. The Scottish speaking parts threw me off because some of the speech was just wrong . Using words that wasn't supposed to be in there.like donna for haven't and some words that were just edited errors. We just briefly touched on her past and what happened to her people and his reluctance to wake her wasn't explained.just not a lot of depth or fleshing out .Didn't feel the supposed connection between the two they just fell in bed together without any pull toward each other 🤷😒 Not reading anymore books in series cause I just don't care about the people or if they beat the bad dragon 💀
When the action only hooks you half way through the book..... there’s a problem. While the story was good, the action in the beginning took forever. It really seemed to drag on, which considering it wasn’t even 200 pages made it that much harder to focus on the story. I will not be reading the rest of the series.
Well written! A few typos, but nothing major. The reason I docked a star is because I felt like there was the potential to really flesh out the romance arc and I wanted more sweet/sappy/steamy scenes. The action was nice, and the world building was good. Overall a great read and I flew through it in a night.
The characters throughout this book will take you through twist and turns throughout their story with evil chasing them and one of them trying to figure out where she is and the other trying to show her she's his fated mate.
Arya is a warrior but she has to go us against Ian along with Rory a dragon destined to be her mate but not without a fight. Good story took me a little to get used the accent but it was good.
This was a good story. I would have given 5 stars, but it needed better editing. There were a lot of words missing, making it a little difficult to follow.
Interesting storyline. However could really use editing. Also more research into the Scottish dialect. I found that improper wording took away some of my enjoyment.
Three sisters were asleep in the tower in suspended animation from the year 1746, taken through time right after the Battle of Culloden. One of them was Rory’s mate, Arya MacFarlane. Today the dragon warrior alien was supposed to wake Arya but tried instead to tell his adoptive mother he had slept late, needed to practice his weapons skills, and would wake her that evening -- but his mother insisted he wake her now. He knew that as soon as his mate woke, evil Ian – the darkness who hunted all of them -- would know and would attack to steal her powers. Ian had already killed the mortal forms of the Fates, but their powers lived on in Rory and his brothers.
From the practice field below the tower, Lauchlan and Fergus watched him intently. If Rory refused to wake his mate, they might walk away from their mates as well. He had no choice but to accept his destiny. He felt a presence as he climbed the stairs and the hair on his neck stood up. Arya and her sisters floated in the air, and Rory heard the voice of Rillo, the most powerful Fate, speak firmly in his mind the command to kiss her. He did so and lightning flashed through him, flames bursting through his fingertips.
Rory fell to his knees and the tip of a sword touched his chin as Arya glanced at her sisters Faye and Elsbeth who still floated in the air. Rory told her he was her mate, but Arya doesn't know if she can trust him or not. Can he prove he is speaking the truth that he is her mate? She knew men were liars.
The fierce warrior Arya is from another time and is struggling to understand the truth of what is going on. She had a bad experience trusting a man in her past that causes her hesitate. But it is crucial that she opens her heart to trust again so that she and Rory can battle together against the evil Ian who will kill them to prevent their interference in his plans to rule over the dragon planet Zalara and Earth. Can they stop him? Can Rory convince Arya of his love and devotion to her?
This was a good story with a touch of humor and suspense to draw the reader in. The story line was clever and well-paced. Grab your copy and see if Ian can be defeated or if he will take over the two worlds!
I loved the series "Dragons of Zalara". Imagine my surprise when I dive into this book to find names of characters in Dragons of Zalara in the story. While both series are independent of each other (as far as book one reveals), each series are able to enticed and hold the reader's attention and enjoyment. Glad I found this book.

I loved this shortish story and I love the Scottish brogue it’s my favourite I guess you can call it a language lol. Rory doesn’t want to wake up his fated mate but he does and she doesn’t take too kindly to it by having a sword at his throat. Arya was betrayed by her love and now she doesn’t trust anyone and has closed her heart off to love especially when a dragon shifter Rory kisses her and wakes her up and tells her that she is his mate. Arya has been in a magical sleep for centuries so when a dragon proclaims that she is his mate she doesn’t believe him and she won’t give her heart away that easily but as the two of them train and spend more time together Arya’s walls start to crumble but she is still determined to get her revenge. A fantastic start to a new series and I highly recommend this book it’s definitely well worth the read.
Well written and incredible story-line. This has an incredible balance of romance, drama, adventure, action, humor, danger, suspense, and romance. This is a wonderful start to the series and a great sci-fi read.
