Not much bothers him… until his best friend’s little sister moves to town.
Carefree personal trainer Drake North is long on charm and short on connections that do more than skim the surface. His main ties are to his family and his best friend, so when his friend’s little sister moves to town, Drake promises to look out for her. But when he offers her his spare bedroom for a few nights, he might be getting in over his head.
High-end honeymoon planner Mackenzie Shaw can take care of herself. In her job for the rich and famous, she leaves nothing to chance. All she has to do is ignore her years-old crush on her brother’s best friend.
Though opposites attract, Drake has no interest in settling down anytime soon. But when Mackenzie travels overseas for work and he finds himself following her around the world, he’s forced to admit there’s nothing shallow about his feelings. Can he prove he’s ready to dig deep and convince Mackenzie he’s everything she needs?
True Colors is a stand-alone novel in the North Brothers series (which is a spin-off of the Hale Street series).
Amy Knupp is a USA Today Best-Selling author of contemporary romance and a freelance copy editor. She loves words and grammar and meaty, engrossing stories with complex characters.
Amy lives in Wisconsin with her husband, and has two sons, four cats, and a box turtle. She graduated from the University of Kansas with degrees in French and journalism. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, breaking up cat fights, watching college hoops, and annoying her family by correcting their grammar.
I continue to fall in love with the North brothers and their leading ladies. 💙 There are so many things that I really liked about this story, the forbidden best friend's sister and all.
“Unfortunately, I love you, and that changes everything.” -- Mackenzie Shaw
The heartbreak for Drake and Mackenzie is palpable. I do like when Drake makes a decision to pursue her, he is all about the big gestures. Of course, it's not sustainable, which I think he figures it out, but it is HOT! 😘🔥
On the whole, the cast of characters continues to grow on me. It's fairly obvious that several supporting characters are appearing from an earlier series. I don't feel like it impacts my enjoyment of the North brothers and their stories, but it does make me curious.
I received an author's copy of the audio book that I listened to while also reading along. The narrator is Stephanie Nemeth-Parker. I continue to enjoy her vocals for these characters. A male narrator to help out would be ideal, but Stephanie does a good job with both roles.
This book is almost entirely inner monologue. There’s no heat, no connection. It’s all just flat. I don’t feel the connection, there’s barely any conversations between Makenzie & Drake so it’s just boring. I skimmed almost all of it looking for it to get good & it didn’t. The first book had basically the same issues so this author is a hard pass for me 💩
This book felt repetitive similar to other books that irritated me recently. This feels too new adult with banal small talk, sort of instalust even though they've known each other for a while, and a manwhore hero. This just doesn't suit my mood right now.
Ohhh my..... What a great story. This is one of those reads that will leave you sighing yet eager to read the next book. The setting, in Nashville, Tennessee, will make you feel like you are there. But it's the characters that truly draw you in. They are so realistic and believable that you'll swear they are real. The story is one that will have you laughing, sighing, and at times telling the characters what to do lol. It's a really well written engaging romance. The North Brothers are sigh worthy and the women they fall in love with aren't weak they are strong women who make their men even better and best of all happy. I love a truly happy ending that leaves me smiling for days. This one is highly recommended!!!
I love a good best friend’s sister book and True Colors definitely fits the bill. Drake is the North brother with a bit of a Peter Pan complex. He really doesn’t want to grow up. Then Makenzie, his best friend’s little sister, stays with him while her apartment is repaired. The two of them are complete opposites and proof that opposites do attract. Watching Drake realize why he’s avoided responsibility and make changes to his life is so rewarding. Makenzie knows her value and refuses to take any crap. Their HEA at the end is hard won and well deserved.
I absolutely LOVE reading about the North Brother's being brought to their knees. I also love a good brother's best friend story (repeat after me: KINDLE CRACK!)
Drake and Mackenzie were fabulous. Flawed, flirty, fun and hella hot.
Gotta love the protective big brother aspect, that's always going to incite some drama. I hope I get to find out more about Ezra- I'm super intrigued about him!
Anyway, this story was a quick and easy read. HFN and there is plenty of room for another epilogue or story for Mackenzie and Drake -which I would happily devour.
This is book 2 in the North Brothers series and the first that I have read and I loved it. An older brother’s best friend romance and I am all for it. Drake and Mackenzie were so good together. They both weren’t looking for a relationship but fate and love has other plans for them. Loved watching them move from being just friends to so much more. Great story and I can’t wait to read more from this series and this author.
I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
I have read a number of books by Amy and I couldn't tell you which one is my favorite. Each new one I read becomes a favorite. The new 'North Brother's Series' are related to the' Hale Street books'. All are great and can be read as stand alone but so much better in order. Drake North is a carefree, wealthy, fun loving and all around good guy. He loves his live. He is a personal trainer, and also works at the family owned store. He loves women and with his good looks and charm he doesn't have to look far for dates. Most or one time as he doesn't like commitment. His life was changed when he was 14 and lost his father. He is very loyal to his family and one long term best friend, Ezra who has been around since high school. Mackenzie Shaw is Ezra's little sister. She has had a really hard life with a father who is never around, and a mother who thinks of her self first and the kids later or not at all. Mackenzie one true friend and love is her brother who has always been there for her. Mack is moving back to Nashville to open a branch office of " To the Stars" a high end honeymoon planner. She has been saving for a long time to be able to buy a house/home and finally have something permanent. Ezra is out of town and asks Drake to pick Mack up at the airport for him. Now neither Mack or Drake have seen each other for 10 years. One can do a lot of changing and growing up in 10 years. Both Drake and Mack can't believe it when they meet for the first time.... It's wonderful. When the apt Mack has planned to move into falls apart, Drake offers her his spare room .... let the fun begin. Guy code is one never hits on his friends girl and never, ever touches his sister. Humm what do you think is going to happen when a single handsome guy and a beautiful single gal share a small space. Especially when Mack is all grown up now and knows what she wants. Mack had a teenage crush on Drake. Get a copy to find out what happens when Ezra finds out what Drake has done. How Drakes and Mack come to terms with there different outlooks on life, when secrets are shared and family gets into it all. This is a fast moving story with great characters. Hope you give it a try am sure you will love it too... I can't wait to see which North brother is next... I know it will be a great read too... I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Not generally a fan of players as romantic heroes. This one worked because the author gave him a reason for his behaviour and showed him growing out of it in a believable way. Likeable characters and a satisfying story.
Drake North was doing his best friend Ezra a favor by picking up his little sister, Mackenzie Shaw from the airport. She was moving back home after living in LA since she started college and never came home. She never finished college because she was handed a golden opportunity to work with a woman who had faith in her and who knew Mac could do the job of selling high-end destination vacations/honeymoons to the mega-rich and famous. And she flourished from there. She was just like a flower that just needed to be watered and bloom to its fullest potential.
Ezra’s lifelong protectiveness toward his younger sister, Mackenzie. Ezra works as a consultant in technology in some way or another and is called out of the country at the drop of a hat. He and Mac tried to talk on the regular but seeing each other was much harder. Both their jobs kept them busy and traveling. Sometimes she would be hosted at resorts to be able to talk up the area and the resorts. Now she is moving back home to start a branch of the same business that she and her partner did in LA but in Nashville.
There was about to be a glitch in the development of her movement forward. But first, when she and Drake meet up at the airport they are both caught a little off guard. Drake had no clue that Ezra’s little sister grew up to be smoking hot with curves in all the right places and absolutely gorgeous to boot. As far as Drake goes, Mac always knew he was handsome hence her crash she had thought was long gone once she left for college. But now you can see the trust fund baby has found his money useful by the way he dresses, carries himself, and expensive toys, (watch, clothes, car...)
For Mac, she is not saying it's a bad thing considering the rich are her bread and butter. But he is so slick he is like the over aged frat boy. Not the man he should be. He does come through in a pinch. Especially when there is a problem with Mac’s apartment situation. This can cause a domino effect in her well-thought-out and executed plan. As they start to get to know one another, they start to introduce each other to people they know. Leading to job opportunities. For her, it is profitable and invigorating, for Drake it is a little more anxiety ridden. See how their deep sharing starts leading to more intimate times. Until one night the sexual tension leads to... Then, the key Drake lent Ezra gets used with no heads-up. And all hell breaks loose.
There are so many different factors happening simultaneously in this story. You have a man with a Peter Pan syndrome going on. A girl who has moved way too many times before the age of eighteen it's messed with her head so setting roots is her driving force. Nothing and no one will stand in her way.
I received the ARC of this book directly from the author as part of her ARC team. Understandably, I am a fan of this author and her books. This is the second book in the North Brothers series, and this again shows another handsome, wealthy brother that has a great family but shies away from relationships and commitment. This book adds in the best friend’s sister element, when Drake ends up having his best friend’s little sister stay with him, except now she is all grown up and beautiful. In this case, Mackenzie has always had a crush on Drake, but realizes that he is not long-term possibility. In the prior book, Drake was introduced as the youngest brother, who has not settled into a corporate job with the family and instead works in both retail and as a personal trainer. He seems to be treated like he is flying by the seat of his pants, but I looked at it as someone working pretty hard at two different jobs! Although there is not a career there and he can probably afford to do that because he has a wealthy family, I thought the two jobs was downplayed a little. Also, I think the author did an excellent job of dissecting why Drake has hesitated to settle down. One of the main issues between them as a couple is that Makenzie works very hard at her job as a high-end honeymoon travel consultant (Coolest job – who knew this existed), as she opens a new office in Nashville! The relationship between Drake and Mackenzie has a few ups and downs, especially around her brother discovering what is going on between them. Also, I felt that they had a very good friendship and she not only helps him look at a future with her, but also how to develop a career path to go forward. My favorite part was the “grand romantic gesture” that can only happen in fiction, but it was a great fantasy for the rest of us!! Great couple with electric chemistry who seem to really grow as their relationship does. Cannot wait to read the next book, thinking it will be Gabe’s story?!??
This second of the North brothers series features Drake, who is initially a less appealing hero than Cole. Unlike Cole, who turned his back on the North money to make his own way, Drake is content with a carefree life, though he takes his personal training jobs seriously.
His friend's sister Mackenzie had a teen crush on him, but apart from his fabulous body (entirely reasonable given his personal trainer work), I'm not sure what she sees in him now. However, a series of unexpected events throws them together, and the memories of the crush and the hot body is enough to get things started (with some great sexual suspense).
After that, both characters are torn between wanting and not wanting commitment. However, it was here that Drake becomes a more sympathetic (and growing) character. We also get into grand gestures and exotic locations, which are fun, though a reminder of how terribly rich Drake is. Mackenzie has to watch funds, but her job is all about lifestyles of the rich and famous, and a subplot involving Cole and his bride is another reminder of the glamorous life. I've been told many readers love this aspect of stories, but I'm not so keen on it myself.
What I do love is good writing, present here. For example, an aspect of Mackenzie's character is mentioned when she's first introduced. Then it is shown several times throughout the story - always subtlety and naturally - and it makes the character real. An aspect of her background also added realism.
Though a self-contained story, this follows True North, and contains foreshadowing for another brother's story - which I am keen to read.
I received an ARC of this story and am voluntarily giving my honest review.
Oh.my.word! I’m so in love with the North Brothers. I can’t decide which one of them I love more. In this story, we get to see more of Gabe and Mason. I love the interaction between Cole, Drake, Gabe and Mason. They are awesome together and you can feel that love. Drake is a dream come true. He realizes who he is and why he is the way he acts, and I respect that. Too bad, at 30 years old that he also realizes what he has been doing and why. He just doesn’t put all the pieces together until Mackenzie came back into his life. Oh, how the mighty fall. I love his fall. I didn’t even mind when he had to deal with Ezra. Not a fan of Ezra but I understood his reasoning. I just get tired, sometimes, with the “don’t mess with my sister” plot point. Ms. Knupp did a great job of keeping that to a minimum and let Mackenzie take care of that. Mackenzie is a great heroine. Fighting a crush isn’t easy but I admired her for standing up to Drake when needed. No woman had ever done that, and he needed it at times. She made him think but also had him reevaluate his lifestyle and what he really wanted out of life. *sigh* I love that. Normally it’s the other way around. What draws me to this series is Ms. Knupp’s writing. It’s low on the angst meter and she lets her characters talk to her and to each other. She has a knack for inserting humor when necessary and also the emotional times, too. Nothing is heavy-handed, but her characters grow and it’s fun to read. By the way, loved, loved seeing Cole and Sierra again. I just love that grouch and it was fun seeing him with his family again. Do yourself a favor and get this series. It’s fun to read and I can’t wait for Gabe’s book. Now that one will be a doozy.
This is the second book the the North Brothers series and the second book to earn 5 stars from me! The first book was about Cole, the middle "forgotten" brother that felt alone and a bit of an outcast from his family. This one centers on Drake, the youngest and most "carefree" brother that never seems to take anything too seriously. That is, of course, until he is reunited with Mackenzie, his best friend Ezra's, little sister. Knupp does a wonderful job of giving her characters some depth to their personalities. Cole felt that he was the "black sheep" of his family for a reason that went beyond his high IQ and middle child syndrome. In the same way, Drake's approach to all aspects of his life (his job, relationships, etc.) is to just go with the flow and to not commit to anything too deeply. The reason for these two takes on life stems from the same root but with branches in different directions. Knupp lets you inside minds and the hearts of the North brothers and as soon as she does, you're hooked! I love the way she gives her female characters a backcone. While the North brothers may know what they want and have definite ideas about how to get it, the women are no pushovers. Mackenzie has a plan and she sticks to it throughout the story. I'm also glad Knupp allowed Mackenzie to have had past relationships. Too often, we read about the many women in the man's past while the women have lead a chaste life. Knupp definitely gets it right in this series. I would highly recommend this series.
We are back with the North brothers onf Nashville. Handsome men whose losses and past have had them avoiding love and relationships. But fate intervened in the last book, and Cole is now in a thriving relationship. Drake is the youngest of the brothers. He’s a personal trainer, with no full time job, carefree, not interested in working in the family business full time, and is with a different girl each week. What few know is that he’s got his secrets hidden behind his charming smile. When his best friend asks him to take care of his sister who’s returning to town, Drake is surprised to find out that the lanky teenager is now a stunning woman. Mackenzie is a honeymoon planner for the rich and famous and about to open an office in her hometown of Nashville. She had a crush on Drake when she was young and knows he’s a womanizer. But when an unexpected situation has her staying with him, a friendship develops. Neither wants a relationship but once again, fate and life surprises them. But can they find their HEA or will their past , believes, etc keep them apart? It’s a touching story about how our childhood affects us as adults. About friendships, family and new beginnings. Another entertaining and engaging story by this talented author. I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
I am so in love with this series. Coming from a family of six kids it is interesting watching the interactions between the different North brothers, and watching them fall in love one by one.
At the start of the story, neither Drake or Mackenzie have any intention of getting involved in a relationship, let along a long term one. Mackenzie is busy with opening a new office for To the Stars in Nashville and Drake has made it his mission to not become too involved or committed to anything or anyone.
When there is a mishap at the apartment Mackenzie has rented, Drake insists she stay in his guest room. But as they spend more time together, the attraction between the two of them becomes harder to ignore. And Drake being Mackenzie's brother's friend doesn't help matters - you know, the old friend code making Mackenzie off limits.
I loved the progression of the relationship between Drake and Mackenzie and how Drake was so thoughtful in the surprise he planned for Mackenzie for their last day on vacation. It was also great having so many of the characters from the Hale Street series in this book. It just makes me want to pick and move there so I could be part of their friendship/family.
This is book 2 in Knupp's North Brothers series...I loved this read / listen. It was a little slow to start for me but I loved these main characters and the best friend's sister troupe. Drake is our main lead - a personal fitness trainer so hello - you know he's hot - but confirmed bachelor thru and thru and has some other issues to go along with the no commitment thing. Mackenzie is our female lead and I think my favorite thing about her - other than her job which sounds amazing - is her strength. I love that she is so independent and mature. I love the honest communications she has not only with her brother but with Drake and really everyone - so refreshing to have someone tell it like it is and be mature about it. I love her character so much and these two while not looking for love find themselves unable to keep from stumbling into it unknowingly. Well written, good narration, smooth flowing storyline with good character growth. Sweet and steamy and totally heart melting!
I received a free copy of this read at my request and I voluntarily provided this review. *this review is based on the audio version of this read.
Falling for your best friend’s little sister isn’t a good idea!
Mackenzie is Shaw is opening a branch of their successful high-end honeymoon planning company in Nashville. All of her plans have gone out the window when she finds out the new apartment she was going to rent isn’t livable. Her brother’s best friend offers to let her stay with him until her apartment can be fixed.
Fitness trainer Drake North was definitely the footloose and fancy free type of guy but when he offers his spare bedroom to his best friend little sister, he didn’t expect his life to change but Mackenzie helped him realize what he really wanted to do. Mackenzie was attracted to Drake and made the first move but when they were interrupted by her brother, Drake had to decide which he wanted more, the friendship with Ezra or love for Mackenzie.
True Colors is related to the Hale Street series and you really need to read all of the author’s books because they are worth putting on your keeper shelf!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This review is about the audiobook more than the actual story. The story I found to be mildly entertaining and even slightly humorous. I liked MacKenzie and Drake. I thought it was a slow burn, best friends sister to lover story that was low angst.
In all honesty, I plan to go back and read the book. I found the monotone of the narrator's voice made it difficult for me to keep up with which character was speaking. It also cause me to zone out at times and have to rewind to figure out what I missed.
As the book moved forward it became even more difficult. Listening to the narrator's male voices didn't do anything o enhance the story or the feeling of this being a romance book.
The narration did not grate on my nerves, and it wasn't irritating. The tone of voice just did not have the ability to keep me engaged.
I would give the audiobook a 3 because I believe there is an interesting story in there somewhere
I voluntarily read and reviewed the audio version of this book that I received for free from the author.
Mackenzie and Drake knew each other as children because he was best friends with her brother, Ezra but they haven’t seen each other for years. She comes home to Nashville and they meet up again as adults. They are polar opposites as far as lifestyles and goals are concerned, but the attraction is very strong. It’s very interesting to see how they both change and grow and are able to overcome their differences to be together. Mackenzie was more in tune with her feelings but Drake rallied around without a lot of prolonged angst. I really loved them as a couple. It was nice to see some of the Hale Street gang and Mackenzie fit right in. We also saw more of Sierra and Cole from True North, so that was a bonus. I finished this book with a smile on my face and a tear in my eye and thought about it long after finishing it. For me, that’s the mark of a good storyteller.
I received an ARC copy and this is my honest review.
I’m loving the North brother’s series so far. Don’t miss out on True Colors. If any of you had a brother who had a best friend that worked as a personal trainer. Then you probably had a secret crush on him. Well, this book starts with said brother’s friend, Drake offering Mackenzie a place to stay. I mean what else is a guy to do when his best friend’s kid sister moves home. But after arriving back home the apartment isn’t available. And she doesn’t no anyone else in town. While living in the same house. He realizes that Mackenzie is all grown up. And he finds her fun and attractive. But he’s not looking for forever. But then again neither is Mackenzie. I won’t ruin the read for you. Grab your copy and see if Mackenzie will decide forever with her brother’s best friend might just be what she wants. And whether or not Drake will realize she’s not just his best friends little sister but the woman for him.
Absolutely love this series. Drake is a typical North Brother who thinks love is all wrong for him. He is good looking and sexy and knows it.
Drake is best friends with Ezra. Ezra asks him to get his sister from the airport and take care of her. While picking her up Mackenzie learns that her apartment is ready because a car went into the building. It will be a week or so before it is ready. Drake says she is staying in his guest room.
Drake finds that while she is there He is attracted to her. He tries to fight the urges because he knows his best friends sister Is off limits. Mackenzie goes out with the girls and they realize she likes him. Mackenzie comes back from the night out and seduces Drake for a one night stand. They both enjoy until Ezra walks in on them. He punches Drake and both leave.
Drake chases Mackenzie down later. Will they get together and will she be more than a fling like the rest if the women in his life? You will have to read to find out!
This is the second book in the series and can be read as a standalone. This is Drake and Mackenzie’s story and I loved it!
Drake is the dreamy guy who doesn’t know what he wants to be when he grows up. He can’t commit and won’t commit for reasons he is too afraid to admit. Mackenzie is his best friends little sister and he agrees to keep an eye on her and get her settled in to her new life. He doesn’t expect her to get under his skin and make him want things he never knew he could.
Mackenzie is starting a satellite branch of the luxury honeymoon company she works for. She is looking forward to starting her life and finally settling down. Her brother’s best friend is as handsome as she remembers and when he offers to help her in a pinch she jumps at the chance.
I love these two together. They are naturally drawn to each other. It is wonderful to see them learn from each other and grow individually and together. The secondary characters are great too. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Drake North and Ezra Shaw were life long best friends. Drake and Ezra called each other by their last names, but Drake always referred to Mackenzie as Shawlette. She grew to love that special name, HIS special name for her. Drake had always been a commitment phobe but when Drake and Mackenzie have a little one night stand and Ezra walks in on them, all hell breaks loose when Ezra punches Drake for having sex with his sister, and then hurts Mackenzie deeply when she hears Drake telling Ezra it was all a mistake? Can Mackenzie set aside her feelings of love for this ladies man who she knows can't commit but she made the mistake of falling in love with? Can Drake finally figure out that the better things in life are worth settling down for?
Drake and Mackenzie's story is just starting so I must continue on, but am so looking forward to the next North Brothers saga True Blue.
He was her older brother's forbidden best friend. And her secret childhood crush, who she hasn't seen since she left for college. When she returns to her hometown of Nashville for a business opportunity, neither of them expect the attraction that simmers between them.
I really like the long history between the characters. I especially appreciated the discussions between them about the childhood traumas that left them with a fear of commitment and of loss. I liked the way they had to talk things out with family or friends in order to get their heads on straight, then had to talk things out with each other in order to mend the hurts of the past and achieve their HEA.
I purchased copy of this story from Amazon and voluntarily chose to share my review.
Knupp uses the classic trope of "girl falls in love with older brother's best friend" for this story. She gave Drake and Mackenzie some challenging personal issues to overcome--especially Drake.
It's been awhile since I read the first book in this series, and I had forgotten some of the characters and personalities. It's been longer still since I read the Hale Street stories. Since many of those original characters make an appearance in the North Brothers' books, I highly recommend reading the Hale Street books if you haven't already done so; it makes for a richer reading experience for this series.
I purchased the Kindle version of this book, even though I also received an advance copy. This is my honest review.
I thoroughly enjoy the way that Ms. Knupp has portrayed the dynamics of the North family and how she expands on it in each book showing that family is an integral part of their lives.
As Drake & Mackenzie try to navigate their pasts, their growing feelings and their hopes for the future, you will feel their pain; you will laugh; you will want to smack them both upside the head, lol; but you will be rooting for them the entire time.
Drake has some serious hidden romantic skills that even he didn't know he possessed!
When Mackenzie temporarily moves in with her brother's handsome best friend Drake, Mackenzie knows not to get involved with him. Drake knows that even though Mackenzie is beautiful, he promised her brother to take care of her. Mackenzie is starting a new branch of the Honeymoon planning business and doesn't want a relationship at this time. Drake is commitment-phobic. Maybe a fling would help or maybe not. I received a free copy of this ebook from the author. This is my honest and voluntarily given review. I love this book. I like how Drake opens up to Mackenzie. I love how Mackenzie stays focused on what she wants. There is definite steam when these two get together. I love how this book ties with the Hale Street series, but it can definitely be enjoyed as a standalone.
