A young knights promotion is turned into a living nightmare when he is sent to the infamous First Gate. Posted deep beneath the world of Aeden he will face horrors older than world he has left behind.
In this dark fantasy short story, we follow Luka. Luka and his brother Michael have spent most of their youth as members of the Griffin Brotherhood. When the time comes, they will be assigned to new posts and their fates will change forever.
Luckily for him, Michael is appointed as a high Lord, but Luka isn't so lucky. He is sent to The First Gate, a place no one wants to go to because no one has come back from there alive.
He is forced to abandon his privileged life, his family and all of his friends because honour compells him but that doesn't make him less scared. He is also given a companion, Katja.
Katja is a necromancer, which in this world immediately makes her an outcast, and her work is to be Lukas' guardian. Both of them are prejudiced against each other at the beginning, but they decide they will have to work together to make the best out of a bad situation.
When they arrive at the First Gate, some time passes before they sense that something isn't normal. Fear and doubt surround their thoughts, until that danger proves itself to be very real. A dark heart, who's after human souls and a sinister master plan that still remains...unsolved...
My thoughts.
I went into this book not knowing what to expect because I didn't read any other reviews, because I didn't want to spoil myself.
I cannot say I didn't like it, but hear me out.
The story itself sounds promising. You have politics, family drama and a fantasy background. These alone raise the expectations.
But you can't fully develop a complicated plot within just 70 pages. Because there are so many things that are left unexplored.
For example, there are attempts at a magical system and development of Katja's background but the former is barely touched upon and the latter feels half-assed.
The secondary characters kind of hadn't any impact on me and I understood that near the end, where some of them were in danger and I literally didn't feel a thing. What's even worse, is that when some of them were mentioned by name, I couldn't remember if they had been mentioned before or not.
Another thing is that I couldn't make sense of the villains. Neither the creature nor the person behind it.
Plus, in my opinion, the structure of the story is a bit, disproportionate. In the first half, you have Lukas talking about his family, him being appointed to the First Gate, the introduction of Katja and all up until the middle point, you have him thinking to himself how he does want to go there. But since this is a short story, when you are past the middle point, inevitably you will have to squeeze every major event within a few pages. This affected both the build up towards the climax and the climax itself.
Despite this book's flaws, I can say it was an easy and quick read. I am definitely eager to read the sequel, to see if my questions will be answered there.
If you made it this far, congratulations! 'Til next time, take care :) :) :)
I was kindly sent a free e-book by the author in exchange for an honest review.
I did like it though. I enjoyed the story and i was honestly intrigued. It’s a story young guy named Luka. He and his brother, Michael, joined the Griffin brotherhood and when time came that they had to take their assigned posts; his brother became High Lord and he was sent to the First Gate.
The First Gate is a place no one ever wanted to be assigned to or even go to because of what’s hiding in there. Not everyone has seen it but they’ve heard stories...
The collector in this story is very creepy and disgusting.. one more thing i loved about this book is that the description of the characters or “things” Luka and the mage saw was very detailed that you’d be able to imagine what they saw/encountered. The ending though, it was kind of a cliffhanger for me. And i kind of did not get the very last part. I wasn’t sure if Luka was killed or they did something else to him.. but nonetheless, i still enjoyed this book!
This book is actually good for such a quick read! I am thrilled to read the other one titled, Tournament of the Lost, and know more about this story. I hope that one gives me justice for the questions that i have regarding this story. Lol anyway, happy reading! ✨
** Thank you to the author, Jonathan Hunter, for reaching out (and willing to provide a copy) in exchange of an honest review!
PS. I did not avail of his free copy because his books are available on Kindle Unlimited. But thank you again, nonetheless. I appreciate it. **
An amazing short story that's bound to get you hooked on the world and make you want to read more!
This tale takes place in a medieval fantasy world, sort of like Merlin's, and tells the story of a young elite soldier named Luka who is sent to guard the First Gate aka Hell's own portal!
It's a fast read full of aesthetic descriptions and intriguing narration, a perfect read if you want something quick yet adventurous! Personally I really enjoyed it and especially one appearance in the end (no spoilers) made me instantly wanna read the full book!
Thank you to Jonathan for sending me the pdf in exchange for an honest review!

Synopsis: A young knights promotion is turned into a living nightmare when he is sent to the infamous First Gate. Posted deep beneath the world of Aeden he will face horrors older than world he has left behind.
Review: For the most part this was a good book. The book had some great moments and a moving plot. The characters were well developed and the world building was also really good. I really liked the detail of the book and I felt the pacing was good for the book too.
However, if you’re a fast reader then the slow pacing of this book might annoy you a bit. The book also goes into extreme detail, which can also be troublesome for some readers.
“Don’t look at the dark too much,” he said while playing with his shield. “Just because you don’t see anything doesn’t mean nothing is looking back.”
Despite its length, this story is layered with all sorts of emotions, with strong religious beliefs that guide the main character, some moments of learning and growth, friendships, emotional bonds and obviously some wonderfully gruesome creatures. It perfectly captures all the anxiety of the main character and the anticipation of all the horrors he is about to endure on his journey. There is a development of a beautiful friendship, the characters learn to accept and tolerate differences and at the same time the story itself is terrifying on many levels. This is a real page turner that gets you intrigued from the very first sentence and leaves you wanting more of the world (for which you can obviously check out the novel)
Also, i have to say i love all the references to the song Scarborough Fair by Simon & Garfunkel cause its a beautiful song and it really does capture the atmosphere of this world perfectly.
Oh! Did someone say there’s a mysterious place with dark magic? I’m sold. If you know me, I’m so obsessed with that kind of places. “Just because you don’t see anything, doesn’t mean nothing is looking back.” Oh, man, that is so creepy.
This is a short story about a guy named Luka, joined the Griffin Brotherhood with his brother, Michael. But, not like his brother, Luka sent to The First Gate that people believed was the unwanted place to go.
The writing is simple and straightaway, I really liked that since english isn’t my first language. I loved that the author put some song with dark lyrics, and I found myself singing those song with my own rhythm and tone when I read them. Lol, it was fun, even though the story wasn’t fun at all. You will find so much suspense here.
I won’t say much about the world building and character development, because it’s a short story and I don’t want to risk any spoilers. But, I have to tell you that Luka was a bit annoying. 🤭
To be honest, I came to this story with zero expectation, and it’s surprised me a lot that I enjoyed the story. I would say that the author did a good job of managing the entire story fit in 60+ pages.
First of all, a big thanks to Jonathan Hunter for asking me to review his books and giving me free ePub! I must admit it was a great honour for me! I started this 60 pages short prequel and finished it in one go. I held my breath from the beginning till the end. It follows a young man on an eccentric and thrilling journey in a world of magic and evil. Betrayed by his brother, abandoned by his family; he follows a female mage onto the perils behind the notorious First Gate; meeting the tragic end like all other. “I want to see the sun again, and the clouds, and feel the rain upon my skin.” The writer’s descriptions were so vivid; each formed an image in my head and I EXPERIENCED the story rather than observing it from a reader’s perspective. This definitely gets ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and is totally recommended for all the mystery-thriller-fantasy lovers! I can’t wait to finish the next book!
This short story has been kindly gifted to me by the author in exchange of an honest review! Thank you so much for the opportunity.
I particularly loved the author's way of writing. Not too complicated, but at the same time effective and that reaches the reader's heart. The world building is one of the things I liked the most. I admire those who can create something original and know how to engage the reader, and this is the case. I loved this world full of details that allowed me to feel part of the story as if I accompanied our main character on his adventure. The characters are well structured, not at all obvious and guided by strong emotions and events that have contributed to making them even more interesting than they already were. I've connected with them immediately and cared about their fates and lives. The plot twists are certainly not lacking in this story and make you always remain in suspense. I couldn't stop reading for even a second. Overall, I would recommend this story to anyone who wants to read something fresh, new, original and at the same time intriguing and full of suspense. 4/5 ⭐ not giving 5 stars cause I wanted more!
What if your promotion turns out to be your worst nightmare? We follow Luka who is a member of the Griffin Brotherhood. Fate turns out to be the biggest challenge that he so far faced during his life.
When he is ordered on behalf of the king to guard the dreaded first gate, he is faced with a task that the previous guards have not been able to accomplish alive.
Luka has to leave behind everything that is dear to him and heads towards the dark fate that awaits him. He is accompanied during his journey by his travel companion Katja who is a powerful necromancer. Her main task is to protect Luka from any possible danger.
The First Gate turns out to be even more feared than the two had estimated in advance. Monsters, creepy voices, horror elements this story has it all.
The storyline is fast paced and the length was perfect in my point of view. Good to mention is that this story takes place 5000 years before The Tournament of The Lost which is also written by Jonathan Hunter.
I'm looking forward to reading the other books in the Aiden series.
I want to thank the author for providing me with a copy of his book in exchange for an honest review.
"Don’t look at the dark too much. Not seeing something is different than not being seen by something, just because you believe there is nothing there, doesn’t mean you are not being watched."
The writing style is really good and easy to read, the description of the creatures is really creepy, it gives me goosebumps. The talk of the people who lived in the tunnel near the First Gate is also dark and haunting which makes the eerie atmosphere even stronger.
World building and the characters are very interesting, sadly since it's just a short story it wasn't explore further. I would have love to know more about them.
If this story is sort of a prequel to a series, I think the author did a good job in making the readers feel interested and want to read more to know what happen next.
Overall, this is a gripping short story dark fantasy that I suggest not reading this at night😂 I'm looking forward to read the next story because I want to know what happen to Luka and Katja after that kind of ending.
Actual rating: 3.5⭐
I received a review copy for free from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
An interesting tale of Griffins (knights) and Mages! Luka is sent to The First Gate - a fate no one wishes to have, he is led to his uncertain and mostly likely deadly future by his Superior, who happens to be a mage and the only girl at The First Gate!
Mages were not a race people liked at all. But Luka becomes fond of Katja and they become as close as siblings.
At The First Gate they look out for each other, despite all the horrendous things lurking in the tunnels. They learn about each other’s pasts and how they came to be at The First Gate.
Poor Luka has to face the hard truth of how he came to be stationed at The First Gate, but he doesn’t allow this to break him. He refuses to allow the nightmares of The First Gate take him, and does not succumb to the voice beckoning him inside his head.
I enjoyed this short story of brotherhood, friendship and betrayal. I can’t wait to see where Luka and Katja’s stories find them next!
This was such a great story! Even though it was a short story, I was completely hooked from the start! I really liked the quotes, simple writing and most importantly the plot. It’s magic mixed with betrayal and all the feels. I loved the detailed description of what the characters encountered, it made me feel as if I was with them. I was scared, disgusted and mainly creeped out. This is honestly such a good story and I hope I can read the ones that follow (The Circus - The tournament of the lost) Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ᴅᴏ ɴᴏᴛ ʙᴇ ᴀғʀᴀɪᴅ ᴏғ ᴛʜᴇ ᴅᴀʀᴋ, ᴅᴏ ɴᴏᴛ ʙᴇ ᴀғʀᴀɪᴅ ᴏғ ᴛʜᴇ ᴄᴏʟᴅ. ғᴏʀ ᴀs ʟᴏɴɢ ᴀs ᴡᴇ sᴛᴀɴᴅ ᴛᴏɢᴇᴛʜᴇʀ, ɴᴏᴛʜɪɴɢ ᴡɪʟʟ ʙᴇ ᴀs ғᴏʀᴇᴛᴏʟᴅ. • Thank you to the author for gifting me the book in exchange of an honest review.😊
The First gate is a short story. The story revolves around Luka who was assigned to first gate by the king and has to full fill his duty by leaving his family behind. The first Gate is a place no one wants to go. The emotions of each and every character are written very well. Despite being short length, the book will keep you hooked till the end. This book was a quick read. Literally enjoyed reading this book.
4* Thank you to the author for providing me this short story in exchange for an honest review. I had a really good time reading this. The beginning did take some getting used to, but when I was in it, I did enjoy it. The writing style was simplistic, but there were some songs in verse which broke the classical composition. I considered it a nice touch that brought out the feeling of happy villagers and celebration. The world gave me midcentury and Arthurian vibes. The magic system is quite interesting and there are many different types of magic as well as creatures. I am so impressed by how even in this short amount of pages, the writer accomplished to give some character background so we can better understand them and their actions. It also affected how I felt about the characters, made me more attached and invested in their fates. It is a hard thing to do it and even harder when limited with page the length of a story. My favorite part was definitely the ending. It was creepy, dark, and mysterious. I read a lot of fantasy, and there are very often some eerie settings, but this one just hit it right. The environment, atmosphere, and inner monologues kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. There were some smaller imperfections, and since it did take some time to get into it, I gave it 4 stars, but this is definitely one of the better short stories that I've read.
The first story from the world of Aeden follows the life of Luka who joined the Griffin Brotherhood with his brother Micheal. While one was lucky enough to become a high lord, one was sent to the First Gate. And Luka's life changed forever. The First Gate is not a lovely place, far from it. It's a place full of the darkest horrors, shadows, and monsters waiting for the right time.
Since I'm a lover of the horror genre, I won't lie, I enjoyed this story a lot. The atmosphere, the setting, the writing style, everything was worked in perfect harmony to create a story that will give you goosebumps AND Lovecraft vibes. Though the beginning is a bit slower, once the horrors arrive, it's almost impossible to stop reading. That's how gripping this story is. Except for that, you can look forward to meeting new characters like Katja, discovering another part of Aeden, and beautiful writing full of emotions. The only thing I'm sad about is how short this story is. It has amazing potential and I would like to read more of it. This is my personal recommendation if you want to read a great short horror story.
Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Lets begin with the cover... I love it! It's so different as the german ones <3 The runes and everything makes ist really mythic and curious of the book and that's hundert procent what a cover schould do...
But lets have a look of the story... At the beginning I don't know if I would understand everything because of the foreign language but a few sentences later I was completly in this story. I love the writing stil from Jonathan. It's so good to read and you don't notice that you read so many sides <3 An other thing I wasn't sure about is the fact that I read shortstorys so so rare because I need the 600 pages... So I didn't expect so much and then I read this... This story and I was like: Holy Shit! This is fucking awesome! (Sorry, for the words) So, we have an amazing story, a good writing stile... What else? The characters are good... And the story was so exciting... Sometimes I was thinking "oh, I believe I know what happens next" and then Jonathan cames and says "ehm, nop, we do other things, unbelivable things"... I mean, thats the best thing you can do in books... And also I had the feeling that I got many informations at the beginning but also I know nothing about that ... (is this kinda understandable what i mean?!)
But if we make a conclusion we can see that just everything is nice. So, this are hundert procent 5 stars and I can completly recommend this short story if you need something new...
I’ve been kindly sent this short story by the author in exchange for an honest review. First of all, I’ve read the novel The Tournament of the Lost earlier this year and now I’ve finally managed to read this companion short story! ༒ A young knights promotion is turned into a living nightmare when he is sent to the infamous first gate. Posted deep beneath the world of Aeden he will face horrors older than the world he has left behind. ༒ In this short story you’re following young knight Luka Brocas who’s been assigned to the one place no knight wants to go. I cannot exactly tell what time span this is dealing with, but it’s for sure not a small amount of time. I really enjoyed getting some more insight into the story of Aeden and its monsters! Also how very cruel this world can be and that you cannot even trust your most loved ones. There sure was a twist I didn’t see coming. The horror in this story is very well portrayed and described. It made it very atmospheric! I could definitely feel the hairs in my neck rise at certain points. However, it still lacked a little something in my opinion. Though the atmosphere has been great, the characters themselves have lacked a little depth in my opinion. Their interactions and actions were rather plain. They were a little predictable and seemed a little too simple at some points. ༒ All in all this is a good short story presenting a little more background story to Aeden! It’s a must read for everyone who enjoyed the novel in the first place! And it’s definitely great for anyone who likes it a little dark and atmospheric! I would definitely recommend it!
Thank you to the author for reaching out and sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review! So this was a pretty short story (65 pages) but it definitely did not lack in suspense and interest. From the very first chapter we are introduced to our main character and his brother, and are shown that they are excited for what lies ahead. They are given positions with which they will serve their king, and the entire town is there to celebrate with them for having completed their training. But while the one brother is given exactly the position he wanted, our main character is given a role that the entire town pities him for... It is a position that no man before him has ever returned from. We follow along his journey to the cursed place, and we immediately catch a glimpse of the horrors that he will face. There’s good world-building, and the mystery of exactly what’s lurking in the shadows at “the first gate” really keeps you reading. We see glimpses of dark creatures, unnatural happenings, and whispering voices in the characters’ heads. And they make you wonder... What will really happen if you submit to them? Despite a few grammar errors and spelling errors that always seem to accompany self-published novels, I was sucked into the world of Aeden and left wanting more. This story is one of two that prelude to the author’s main novel, The Tournament of the Lost. I’ve already read the second short story (a review for that will be up soon) and have started the novel. We’ll see where this journey into the unknown will take me.
✦ Horror / Short story ✦ Same world as Jonathan hunter's novel : "Tournament of the Lost" ✦ Use of creatures / demons / mages ..etc ✦ 60 Pages
𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐬 : ● This was really smooth to read, the way it's written is quite good. We do not lose momentum between chapters and events which makes you wanna one shot the story!
● The characters are all unique and that is usually quite hard in such a small amount of pages but I think we got just enough of their backstory at some point to get attached or on the contrary not like some of them and form a little opinion on each
● I loved Katja, she's Luka's superior and a mage. I liked her personality and how it made the whole "mages are assholes" be questioned by the main character and their relationship is really cute imo!
● The actual creatures are for the most part really creative, some of them were really well detailed and added a layer of gore on top of the horror which was a nice bonus to the whole plot!
𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬 : ● I wish it was a little bit longer so that we could get more infos on the world and see more magic for the mages aswell but I'm gonna guess that the novel fills the holes on that regard
● I honestly didn't get really attached to Luka which is a shame because there was the potential but I think Katja really stole the show for me x)
● I hopped for a bigger plot twist concerning the Gate itself and maybe a confrontation with Michael, his brother, but that's on me really!
This little novella is truly scary, but besides being super scary, it's also mysterious and suspenseful. The writing is just as perfect as in The Tournament Of The Lost, but what I like the most with this book, is that the author didn't change his writing style at all, and that The First Gate feels like a part of the main storyline.
The First Gate is truly an amazing introduction to the world of Aeden, and the whole storyline. So if you feel like 600+ pages are too much to start with, The First Gate is just for you, in just 60+ pages it contains the right amount of mystery and thrill to make want to read The Tournament Of The Lost.
Highly recommended to all lovers of high/adult fantasy, this new author is going to blow your socks off.
I read his story with a great pleasure and, trust me, you’ll enjoy it. . Is a fantasy story and talks about a young who see his life completely changed when is sent to the First Gate. from that moment he will live a nightmare full of fear and terror but he will also discover his strength. . As I alreasy said this is a short story so the writer's skill was to capture the attention of the reader immediately: within a few pages you are completely inside the story and live the emotions of the protagonist as if they were your own. . It’s difficult to categorize this story because it has inside mystery, fantasy, a bit of suspense and adventure but I think that no matter the main theme because is a great story and everyone should read it. . The language isn’t hard to understand so if you're at a little more than basic level you won't have big problems. I won't tell you anything else because it's a short story so I risk some spoilers but I recommend you read it because it's really nice. I take this opportunity to tell you that he also wrote a novel, pass on his profile and take a look, you won't regret it.
I was given this book by the lovely author in exchange for an honest review. From my understanding, this short story is set in the same world as his novel, but 5,000 years earlier. Even though I’m not one for novellas and prequels, the concept behind this story is pretty cool. This short story is also written in 1st person POV, which was definitely a change for me because I prefer 3rd person.
Hunter does a good job of managing to fit an entire story in 60+ pages without it feeling completely rushed. Of course, you aren’t going to get everything you want out of a short novel, for it’s physically impossible to cram in so much information without it being overwhelming. So I think Hunter did a good job of juggling that.
The MC annoyed me at some points, but probably because I would have been as dramatic af as he was when I learned of my fate of going to the Last Gate. 😂 otherwise, I enjoyed the other characters, especially Katja.
Naturally, I felt like there were a few problems with the story, but it was objectively good. I admire anyone who can produce a story. It would be fun to see what his other novel is about!
In this dark fantasy short-story, we immerse ourselves in an interesting medieval fantasy world. We follow Luka after he gets sent to The Fist Gate, a promise of death. Forced to abandon his family and with a mage as his superior, Katja, Luka resigns to his fate. With good writing and interesting world-building, I think this short 70-page read is great to get a taste of the series concept. It managed to creep me out in several instances, and I was definitely not expecting the end. I only wish some things were explored a bit deeper, but I liked the characters and thought the world and concept were interesting. I also enjoyed the pacing. As a short-story, it is sometimes hard to completely develop the plot, but I think that this is a good introduction to the series overall and a good little taste of what’s to come. I really recommend this if you enjoy short stories or are looking to get out of a reading slump!
(I was kindly sent a free e-book by the author in exchange for an honest review.)
Thank you to the author for providing me this book in exchange for a review!
To be honest, I went into this book without knowing anything about it. My assumption about the genre of the book was completely wrong 😂🙈 This is the first fantasy horror book that I have ever read and for a short story, this book is really good! It had me at moments when I was at the edge of my seat and moments where I was disgusted by the creatures (a feeling I've never felt before from a book). The writing style was amazing and I really felt like I was inside this world and standing there with the characters. For so little pages, this story is gripping and will make you feel things that a story hasn't made you feel before. I was going to give this 4 stars, but I changed it to 5 because damn, just by writing this review, this story is something all horror fans need to read.
I was gifted this short story by the author in exchange of an honest review. This short story catches you right away in the prologue with a sentence structure of short sentences and the repetition of “Let me” that raises the suspense and curiosity of what happens next. The writing is great and I haven’t read anything like this before. It’s a very original plot with a suspenseful and mysterious plot line. And don’t let me get started with the characters. I appreciate characters where you can tell how much work the author has put into them with personality, personality traits and emotions. All the characters act of their emotions and the main character especially uses his faith (Christianity) as support.
“Don’t look at the dark too much, just because you don’t see anything doesn’t mean nothing is looking back.”
I was gifted this short story by the author in exchange of an honest review.
It tells the story of Luka, a young soldier who is sent to the First Gate. It’s a fast read and easy to understand. The writing is great, not too complicated and really good at getting to the point without feeling too rushed. You get immediately immersed in the story.
I personally liked the world building. In a few pages you get an original plot full of details without being overwhelming. I also liked that the characters are guided by strong emotions and different beliefs. Katja was definitely my favorite.
I can’t say much without spoiling some things but you’ll enjoy it if you like fantasy/horror stories.
So the story follows Luka, a young knight just promoted to take guard in the most dangerous and horrific place: the First Gate! Accompanying him there it’s Katja, a mage and necromancer, that also work at the gate. There, Luka will meet Filip, sent there for treason and Ivan, a knight that in search for vengeance meant his end at the First Gate. The First Gate is a very dark and terrible place, where monsters and demons lurk in the shadows and whisper in your ear at night to go to them. Luka soon discovers that even thought you can’t see through the dark tunnels is supposed to guard, that doesn’t mean something is looking back at you! A gripping dark story that will keep you at your toes, specially if read at night in the dark!
First I want to thank the author for giving me a chance to read this short story, in exchange for an honest review. So here is my review 😊.
I liked this story, even though it's not necessarily my type. I am not a fan of the blood and gore, but I actually liked the creepy descriptions of this short story. And even though it's around 70 pages long, I liked Katja, she really seems to be a nice character and I would've loved to get to know her better.
The idea of this story is really interesting and it sparked my interest. I will try the next short story too; they take place in the world of Aeden, 5000 years before the books Tho Tournament of The Lost (which I will also read at some point, hopefully).
As this storyline is 5000 years before ‘The tournament of the lost’, these short stories fill us in with all the little details of how it was before the kingdom was divided!
I can see that this story could be read apart from the novel, but I highly recommend reading it after it.
Short, scary, and interesting.
It HAS to be read in one sitting because it is .. well just read it and you’ll see!
The author is just amazing, and the more of his work you read, the more you will fall in love with his writing.
As always, he showed the bonds between people amazingly well, as well as every detail in the book.
Amazing read, can’t wait to read all the short stories!
