Rate this book
Cassie Peterson lives in an invisible prison of fear, chained by self-doubt and guarded by a relentless warden—her husband. Derrick’s verbal abuse as well as his alcoholism have left Cassie alienated from her family, without friends, and certain she can’t survive on her own.

After an unexpected police visit, Cassie realizes the survival of her four-year-old daughter, Renee, depends on Cassie’s courage to leave. What she doesn’t plan on is Derrick’s vengeful custody fight.

While walking through the treacherous world of divorce, Cassie is encouraged by her spunky new friend, Missy Langdon, to pursue her love of waterfalls. Cassie finds solace in the waterfalls on the agonizing weekends she’s forced to hand Renee over to Derrick. Meanwhile, unexpected help comes in the form of Brian Sutton, an attorney at the firm where Cassie works—but what price will she ultimately pay for his assistance?

As Derrick’s threatening behavior escalates, Cassie questions her choices. How long will her daughter suffer before the custody case is resolved? Why is she drawn to waterfalls during this chaotic time? And who will stand with her when everything comes crashing down?

What I Loved:
One Woman Falling was such an emotionally impactful book, it almost hurt to read. I am so impressed with Melanie Campbells’s ability to write about the topic of domestic violence with such beautiful writing. I was so drawn into this book and it deeply touched me.

How I Felt:
The characters felt so real in this story. Melanie Campbell created Cassie Peterson, a woman living a life filled with domestic abuse and made her come to life on the pages. Her story takes the reader through the emotional impact domestic abuse has on a person. Cassie comes to realize that she is worthy of love and that this relationship is not a loving one. Her faith helps to guide her to understand her own strength and empower her to make a change.

The writing was done so well. One Woman Falling is the kind of book that will have you up late trying to get in just one more chapter, which turns into three, and then four…fair warning. Melanie Campbell’s real-life events helped to shape this book, and I think that made it more impactful for me. Even though the story itself is fictional, these are real events that happen every day. Her story flowed beautifully and created a heartbreaking, yet uplifting story.

Content Warnings: Domestic violence and alcoholism.

Overall: I have a hard time saying I enjoyed a book that is filled with such terrible events, and yet I did enjoy this story. One Woman Falling will bring out all the emotions for you, going for sadness, to outrage, to understand, and then relief. It is a beautiful story that readers will love.

To Read or Not To Read:
I would recommend One Woman Falling for readers that enjoy an emotional read. This is a Christian-based book, but I think that all readers can enjoy this.

I was provided an advanced reader's copy of this book for free. I am leaving my review voluntarily.

This is the first book by Melanie Campbell that I have read and it's a heart-felt and emotional women's fiction that addresses some tough issues. The story is told through first-person perspective of Cassie as she faces verbal and emotional spousal abuse, the turmoils and toils of divorce and custody proceedings, the hardship of parenting alone, and the uncertainty of entering the work force. Yet, within these heart-wrenching circumstances, Cassie finds joy and peace through the metaphor and illustration of waterfalls and also returns to her faith. She begins her journey as a scared, timid, and confused woman but emerges as a confident, strong, and faithful woman living with a purpose. Along the way, she makes good friends who stand by her side and support her. Cassie learns to forgive and let go of the past while looking forward with expectation and joy.

If you enjoy women's fiction that speaks of redemption, you will enjoy this book. I received a copy of the book from the publisher via JustRead Publicity Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.

Sometimes I think subjects are not only hard to talk about, they're hard to read about. Abuse is one of those topics. When I first heard about One Woman Falling, I wasn't sure it would be a book I'd be comfortable with, BUT the problem is...THAT'S the problem. We don't want to acknowledge the uncomfortable things and that allows the subject to remain under wraps.

The author doesn't pull any punches. She starts off introducing us to Cassie who is a stay-at-home mom to her four year old daughter. Then we have the unfortunately luck of meeting her husband Derrick. He's the kind of guy no one should be subjected to. Let's just say he's a piece of work.

The action snowballs from there. Cassie has some tough choices to make, but make them she must. Thankfully there are people in her life to come alongside her as she makes her way through it all. There's a faith element that follows all the way through the story. It's subtle at times, but it's evident that the Lord is guiding her. I especially liked her grandma. Who wouldn't, right? You also see how someone who comes from an abusive home can end up in one as well.

I felt like the author's description of the hikes Cassie takes in the story are vivid and remind me so much of when I lived in the PNW and used to hike a lot. It'll make you want to go for a hike when the weather gets better.

Overall, while this was a difficult topic, I enjoyed the book and appreciate the sensitivity the author used while not shying away at how terrifying spousal abuse can be as well as manipulative.

I received this book for review from JustRead Tours. This is my opinion.

Not only is an abusive relationship hard to endure, but it can also make the reader uncomfortable. But on a positive side, reading and learning bring about an awareness that is much needed. So for that reason alone, open the book. We never know when that added awareness will be needed. Who can we help with this knowledge? Others? Hopefully not, but ourselves?

One Woman Falling touches on betrayal, fear, grief, hurt, healing, and much more. But on the forefront is being able to admit the truth.

Cassie Peterson shares her story which no doubt parallels many others in her same situation. She is a stay-at-home mom (well, that may not correlate to that many women in this day and age) with a four-year-old daughter. All seems fine until her husband, Derrick, enters the picture. Hopefully, none of us know a man like Derrick, but we are all familiar with him through TV or books.

Usually, my first thought is, Who puts up with that kind of nonsense and abuse? But then I remember that I too was a stay-at-home mom. While I had no desire to leave, if I had, it wouldn’t have been a simple thing to do. And from what I read, women who are abused allow mind games to enter into their lives. The see-saw effect of mind games must be devastating in making clear decisions.

So is leaving a bad situation a clear-cut easy-peasy thing to do? Hmmm. I’m sure you understand that after considering my earlier thought, that I’m backpedaling a little.

There are avenues of help available to those who are seeking help. But this book expertly shows that nothing about leaving is simple.

Cassie clearly has some tough choices to make, but there are those who are willing to help her. But she has to take the first step.

Though it’s subtle, and I’m glad it is, there is an element of faith that weaves through the story.

This book addresses issues that are difficult. But I totally recommend it as not only a very interesting story, put a page-turner as well.

What Concerned Me
Nothing

What I Liked Best
As I started reading I was a little bit afraid there would be nothing new this book had to offer. Wrong. It goes beyond abuse in the family setting and takes it to the courageous, survivor mode.

This story offers hope to many women. Bravo, author Melanie Campbell. Well done.

OH MY HOLY HECK!!! THIS STORY YA’LL!!!
Ms. Campbell grabs the reader, jerks you into the story, and doesn’t let go.
Cassie’s situation is terrifying and yet all too common. Sticks and stones… but words can be deadly. Cassie was beat down by the venom-laced words of her husband as surely as if she had been pummeled with a fist or a baseball bat. Derrick was a bully. Self-important, manipulative, and controlling.
The suspense and tension in this story builds with every page. So tangible was the telling, I wanted to scream at Cassie, to drag her away with my own hands. To warn her of the mind games Derrick was playing.
Ms. Campbell conveys Cassie’s anguish, her torment vividly, and Renee’s confusion at the conflict in her father’s lies. She skillfully portrays Derrick for the rage-controlled coward he is.
My heart breaks to know there are women who live—and die—in such circumstances, and I applaud Ms. Campbell for telling this story and bringing awareness to abuse by way of verbal bullying.

Whew – reading this was a whirlwind and I was unable to put it down! Author Melanie Campbell has tackled some very difficult subjects in this book, namely spousal abuse, addiction issues, as well as sexual harassment in the workplace. This captivating story follows the struggles Cassie is forced to endure along with her sweet daughter Renee by her domineering and abusive husband Derrick. Only by remembering her beloved grandfather’s words, such as “hold tight and keep your eyes ahead of you”, or “remember what I taught you”, is Cassie able to remain strong and work her way through the many trials and tribulations she faces. Even though also struggling with dysfunctional family issues, she is able to find support and strength through co-worker Missy. I love the way the beautiful waterfalls were used throughout the book as respites for her soul.

I feel this book helped me to better understand what abused women face, and hopefully will inspire someone going through this herself to have the courage to get the necessary assistance.

Thank you in advance to the author, Melanie Campbell, and JustRead Publicity Tours for providing a complimentary review copy. A positive review was not required. All words and thoughts are my own.

There might be some content warnings for readers who have issues/struggles with certain subjects:

* Divorce
* Alcoholism
* DUI
* Child Custody
* Verbal Abuse
* Physical Abuse
* Domestic Violence

This is not an easy read despite it being a Contemporary Christian Fiction novel. It will be painful for the reader to read this, especially those who have gone through it.

The writer herself has gone through something similar which was painful and she at first didn’t want to write it.

I’m glad she did. And, I hope it inspires other women to stand up and take care of themselves, and remove themselves from an abusive situation.

With that said …

Obviously the subject this book is based on will be troubling and triggering. As I had read another similar book last year, this was much better than that one in terms of the realities. This was far less brutal than “Lulu’s Café” by T.I Lowe. But, neither one shies away from the realities of domestic violence.

Told in three parts: “The Rapids”, “The Fall”, and “The River”; Campbell brings an authentic approach with a vivid reality to the issues described. In this book though, the couple shares a four (4) year old daughter who doesn’t understand the dynamics of her parents’ marriage.

The realistic alienation of Cassie from family and friends places her in a lonely place. However, when her “Nannie” (grandmother) calls the police after over-hearing an argument between Cassie and Derrick, I felt hopeful. Yet, Derrick manipulates the situation, or tries to, to his advantage.

It proves to be the catalyst Cassie needs to stand on her own. Despite not being able to afford an attorney, Cassie does get some legal advice. And, she has the help of some co-workers to get her through, though she has doubts and valid concerns.

But, as Campbell eloquently writes in “One Woman Falling”, it is never easy to leave an abusive situation. The reader is thrown into the frightening reality of domestic violence. My heart alternately broke and yet I was furious at reading some of the story – the unfairness and at times, injustice of the situation.

One of the most heart-breaking points is how deeply Renee, Cassie and Derrick’s child, is affected by it. “One Woman Falling” highlights a systemic failure in how psychological trauma fails at being addressed in a custody battle. Despite what the child is being put through, and thus hurling at her mother – it isn’t considered “abuse”.

Renee’s “acting out”, particularly towards her mother, is a perfect example of parental manipulation. Derrick’s threats are even more infuriating. It isn’t something society enjoys talking about, let along reading about – but it is something that NEEDS to be talked about.

Despite how painful this is to read, Campbell’s honest approach draws the reader in and holds their attention. While the subject behind the story is raw and deeply disturbing, it is well-written, and definitely hard to put down. I found myself wanting to keep reading it simply to see if Cassie’s nightmare was going to end.

There were a few things I wanted more of a resolution to:

** Renee’s attitude with her mom. I wanted to know more about what Derrick was saying and doing to the child for her to “act out”

** A resolution with Cassie and Brian

** What ultimately was going to happen with Derrick and the DUI?

While this is a Christian Fiction book, there are no overwhelming references to God or scripture. That’s not to say there isn’t any – there are references, but they are done without feeling like the author is preaching to the reader.

Given the material, this is a clean read with the only objectionable word being wh@re.

Wow.

This book is such an emotional read. I'm talking like you need your tissues nearby because it is going to punch you in the gut. I'm not going to lie, at times it was hard to read. Mostly because as a child I was in situations like this, and so it brought back a few memories - which I can handle so it was okay. But wow. Campbell brings to light a very real issue today, well two of them actually - alcoholism and abuse. She doesn't sugar coat them at all, and I appreciate that about her writing. It's the real world, and the real world doesn't sugar coat it. How can we encourage people that they will survive these situations if authors didn't present them in a realistic fashion?

Cassie is a character that so many people will be able to connect with. There were a few times I found her to be slightly naive, but I think a lot of us can be at times in our lives. Not only did she have a journey in growing spiritually during this story, but she really grew as a woman. She went from relying on others to relying on herself (and God of course). That is a HUGE task for someone in her condition to have to do. She had bumps and bruises along the way, but I was drawn to her journey and felt like a proud mama throughout the story.

One Woman Falling is a story of hope, second chances, and growth. It is a story that will stay with me for a long time, and one I can see myself talking to others about if they are faced with similar situations as Cassie. And I'm hoping that perhaps there is another story for Cassie. One that maybe also features a certain police officer. Wink Wink!

It’s time to go... Her beloved grandfather visits Cassie Peterson in a dream and tells her it’s time to go. Time to go? Where would she go? Cassie and her grandfather loved to be outdoors, especially at one of their favorite waterfalls. The dream ends and Cassie is left apprehensive and confused; was it possible that her grandfather really told her it’s time to go in a dream?

Then her husband, Derrick, arrives home from work, early, with a head start on his nightly drunken binges. And he is ready for a fight. Nothing Cassie does is able to stave off her husband’s attack, leaving her feeling brutalized and fearful, for both herself and her young daughter.

It’s time to go... This time Cassie decides it really is time to go, carefully planning how to leave Derrick, she sets about finding a job, a new place to live and packing clothing; all without her husband’s knowledge because if he found out before she could get away, well, he just couldn’t find out.

Turns out getting away was easier than she thought; it’s the after that begins a horrible nightmare Cassie isn’t sure she will be able to endure. Derrick has no compunction lying about Cassie, making her appear mentally unstable and unfit to be their daughter’s mother. When Brian, an attorney at her new job, seems to take a special interest in her case, Cassie is relieved; but is that all Brian is interested in?

Before you read One Woman Falling, you may want to flip to the back of the book and check out the author’s note where she shares that she didn’t want to write this story and the reasons why.

When Cassie Peterson has had enough and leaves her verbally abusive husband, she goes on a painfully emotional journey of establishing her new normal. Melanie Campbell does a superb job of putting readers in Cassie’s head and allowing them to feel her fear, pain, and heartbreak.

This book was hard to read but it is full of truths that, unfortunately, many women (and even some men) deal with today. My heart hurt for Cassie and little Renee with the way her ex-husband manipulated them both. I was a little annoyed with the co-worker situation (you’ll know what I’m talking about when you read the book) but in the end, Cassie does prove her strength and resilience or greater than she imagined.

Broken, abused, scared Cassie goes through a lot to save both her and her daughter. It definitely wasn't easy reading this book and I should say it was a lesson in self control. Understanding that the human nature is so fickle and selfish everyone looks for a way to manipulate situations to make themselves look good.
Cassie was a fighter. Although scared and timid at first especially because she wasn't sure how to go about living on her own especially after being in bondage for so long, coupled with fighting for custody and parenting alone, she emerges, stronger, finds her faith and finds herself too.
Definitely not a comfortable read but a worthwhile one nonetheless.

On the surface Cassie leads a perfect life--beautiful home, handsome husband, darling little girl. But beneath the facade she lives a lie. She must find the courage to break free from the bonds that hold her captive. Author Melanie Campbell writes with an empathy for her characters that brings authenticity to her story. Some readers will find this novel difficult to read because of its truth while others will ask why it wasn't written sooner. A great debut novel from an author to watch.

I always talk about how I love when books make me feel something but I have to say that this one incited a whole level of anger I didn't know I had in me. In the beginning I felt like Derrick was actually underplayed from his role, but the further I got into the story the more his personality showed its true colors. I have seen countless families broken up in my lifetime and seen the level of damage that can arise especially when one party is an abuser and manipulator. As a child I saw friends hurt by their parents fighting and often rebelling themselves either for attention or simply because they knew they could get away with it. As an adult I've seen parents struggle because of unsupportive exes and seen others manipulate their children (and even new spouses) to make themselves appear more innocent. We are all broken selfish sinners, but there is something to be said about intentional manipulators and abusers. (Ask me how I really feel haha). As sad as it may sound, the chances are that in today's world you've either witnessed abuse and divorce personally or seen friends or other loved ones walk through it. So chances are the more you dig into this one, the more anger you'll find springs up in you too.  There are so many people walking in Cassie's shoes in today's world that it breaks my heart. This isn't a story I'll soon be forgetting.

Wow!! This book covers some tough topics that will really hit readers hard. There is abuse of several sorts an alcoholic husband, and being taken advantage of by a co-worker, and on top of that dealing with a mother and grandmother with different ailments. This woman has it rough. And somehow she hangs on and pulls through. Loving and protecting her daughter along the way. This is a powerful story that may be hard to hear, but brings to life realities that some people could not even possibly imagine. Readers will be sucked into this heart wrenching and family focused beautiful and inspiring story.

When I picked up this book I had a feeling it was going to be a tough read for me, and in a lot of ways I was right. Being a woman that left an abusive marriage myself, I deeply identified with a lot of things that happened to Cassie and Renee, certain things bringing tears to my eyes and memories to my mind as I'm reading them happen to the characters, reality hitting me hard, and leading me to contemplate my own past and how far I've come in my journey. There are things that happened that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy and breaks my heart when I think of others that have had to endure such injustices.

Despite the tough subject matter, this novel is well written with such heart and authenticity that it wasn't a shock when I found out this story is based on the authors own experiences. The thread of faith and forgiveness, as well as finding your own way, was beauty amid the pain, and I appreciated the satisfying ending.

A heartbreakingly beautiful love story and one that I think everyone needs to read.

One Woman Falling is beautiful, heartbreaking, inspiring and redemptive... Author Melanie Campbell has created a story that isn’t just read, but rather experienced with the heart. I found One Woman Calling to be a truly inspiring story of one woman’s brave, tremendous love for her daughter paralleled with the love the Heavenly Father has for
her and the freedom only He can offer.

I was captivated by this story from the start and had trouble putting the book down. As Cassie realizes that she needs to break away from the verbally and physically abusive relationship with her husband, the brevity of the first hand experience was deeply felt. Campbell writes in the first person, which is an aspect that attributes to the integrity of the story, thus allowing readers a look into the heart and mind of the main character. More than once I felt my own mother’s heart breaking for her as she ached for her child and for resolution from conflict.

There’s vulnerability, poignancy and so much depth to this novel. It was riveting and heartwarming without being overly heavy or sad… Through the hardships of a separation, custody battle and subsequent divorce, Cassie finds meaning and light in her weekend treks to various waterfalls. It is there that God speaks to her heart in the stillness and opens her mind to what He has in store for her life. In addition, Cassie begins to see the way God placed people in her life at various intervals for a reason, confirming the fact that God works all things, even the hardest times, together for the good of those that love Him and pursue Him.

The faith based elements aren’t overwhelming but significant. Without them, the beauty in the redemption of the pain Cassie walks through wouldn’t be possible. There is no making light of the reality in these hard and very real experiences, but it doesn’t consume the novel... It’s portrayed tastefully and expertly. At the end, in the author’s note, Campbell shares this novel was based on her own real life experiences and her testimony, something I give her immense credit for. I recommend this novel to readers who enjoy contemporary fiction as well as mature, older teens. Trigger warnings include alcoholism, divorce, verbal and physical abuse, and contemplation of suicide. It is my opinion that these matters are handled with excellent care and are not overly in depth or heavy. The author handles each with grace and Biblical application.

I cannot say that One Woman Falling was a particular enjoyable book to read... but it was an important one that I'm glad to have read! Let's just be honest, the topic of abuse- whether physical, emotional or verbal- is not an easy one to read. It's uncomfortable, and perhaps even misunderstood and mishandled often. And that, more than anything, is why this book was so very much needed.

One Woman Falling follows the story of Cassie as she leaves her abusive husband. It is told in such a way that is beautiful, honest and truly helps us as the reader better understand exactly what she has gone through and why it can be so difficult to leave. In the author's note it is revealed that this story was based on the author's story, as well as the stories of many other women who had actually been there. I think that authenticity certainly comes through in the story. Often abuse victims can be made to feel like they are at fault for choosing that person, for staying with them too long, for not seeing it, etc... but through Cassie's perspective we are better to understand all of that.

Again, it's not an enjoyable read just based on the subject matter alone... in fact it's rather heartbreaking at points! Still, it is a story filled with hope and love. For survivors or those going through it, it can be a great inspiration. For those on the outside looking in, perhaps it can allow us some perspective and empathy too.

This is Melanie Campbell's first novel, and what a debut it was! I look forward to seeing more from her in the future!

Well written! I so enjoyed this story.
This new author has great potential and she has done a great job with this tough subject
I can't wait to see what she has for the future.
Cassie is truly amazing! I love her grit and determination and her struggles were believable and realistic.
For me, this story made me want to reach out and give Cassie the biggest hug just simply because she deserves it. She's one brave lady.
I didn't like Derrick from the start. He was mean and very disrepectful. I also didn't like his controlling ways. ( Makes so glad my husband isn't like that).
This book is a wonderful read. I spent most of the night just to finish this book. I wanted to see what happens to Cassie.
I think for me, my comfort thing is classical music because it's so very relaxing and talking to God is too.
I love the idea waterfalls being a comfort place. I think it's the sound they make and
I enjoyed the plot very much. This will make you want to get mad, scream at them and root for them as well.
Again in this book God is offering His Grace. For we are saved by Grace all we need to do is ask.
My thanks to Just Reads Tours for a complimentary copy of the book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. NO compensations were received and all opinions are my own.

It is rare that a novel is written talking about the topic of domestic violence in an accurate way without being too graphic or not very accurate.
Take a walk through the life of a woman experiencing domestic violence and her journey to safety, done in one of the best ways I have ever seen in a novel. The author did her research when she wrote this book, and while some, the fear would be that this book could cause triggers to arise. I would say that this book will be empowering for you. It will can help you go through the steps of seeing the abuse, achieving safety, Finding hope and establishing new patterns. This is a manual packed into a novel without feeling like you got preached at.
It is also an amazing story.

Read it and weep!

This intense debut novel devastated me. I know several women who are going through similar battles to the one Cassie faces in One Woman Falling, which may have influenced my thoughts on the book, but I doubt it.

The writing contains such emotional depth. Before I read the author's notes, I would have said that it is clear she did her research. Now that I've read her notes, I know she used her personal experiences, making it even more compelling.

While abuse drives Cassie from her house, taking her four-year-old daughter, Renee, with her, it is not violent. Cassie's struggle with doing the right thing, protecting Renee, and dealing with her grandmother's failing health drive her to seek answers about whether God can help her and whether he even cares.

I appreciated that the author didn't throw in easy answers or fall back on clichés. The narrative is very insightful and deeply compassionate. While Cassie has the sense of being overwhelmed, there is a glimmer of hope throughout the story. I appreciated seeing Cassie's grief over the loss of her best friend, the man she fell in love with. I sometimes forget that abused women have loved the men doing this to them and only look at how awful the men seem at the time.

Having lived in the Eugene/Springfield area, I enjoyed reading about familiar places. I have been to a number of the waterfalls mentioned and they are as beautiful as described. Completely drawn into this fascinating story, I found myself wondering if I had ever been to Derrick's car lot or passed Cassie in the grocery store.

I recommend One Woman Falling to anyone who has questioned whether God cares. I especially recommend it to anyone dealing with an abusive spouse or a custody case. I hope to be more compassionate with those I know involved in these situations and can better understand what they are going through.

If you enjoy challenging Christian fiction, be sure to catch One Woman Falling!

Real, Tender, and Inspiring

Melanie Campbell’s gentle voice tells the story of a woman caught in abuse, attempting to rebuild a life for herself and her daughter, and finding the love of friends, family, and God. The characters are incredibly realistic and the story is touching. Though contemporary isn’t usually my cup of tea, this book held me from beginning to end.

"The bad things that happens to believers isn't because God is punishing them. It breaks God's heart more than we can imagine. But he makes all things work together for their good."

I started reading this book and dropped it for few hours because of the intensity and depth. I love books like that and I needed to prepare myself emotionally for it. My heart goes out to women who go through abuse, both emotional and physical. I can't begin to imagine the pain they go through.

Clued from her story, Melanie crafts a beautiful story of Cassie's abuse marital and how she fights through it.

Cassie had a childhood with issue and her marriage wasn't any better.
But her stand to do what's right for herself and her daughter took her through a journey filled with a lot of breathtaking events that required God's help. I wish I had her kind of strength and wit.
Her relationship with God evolved through the cycles she had to go through and I love how her story unflods.
One of the most endearing parts of the book was the beautiful godly relationships God brought across her way from family and friends, they helped her through life's hurdles. God never intended us to go through life alone and he plants his children along our path. This book highlights to a large extent the essence and beauty of Godly relationships in our lives.
I loved the way the essence of prayers was beautifully illustrated.
The Bible verse that says we should not be equally yoked with unbelievablers was handled so beautifully in this book.
The book was fast paced and captivating.
It handled issues that most people are careful not to handle and it was handled with clarity and honesty.

The details will keep you reading and make your heart out of against abuse of any kind.

The characters of the book were so great.
The setting of the book, especially about nature was absolutely relishing.

I recommend this book to people who loves truth and have a heart to stand up for injustice against women in abusive relationships and marriage. You'd have to read the book to appreciate it.

I received an ARC of the book and all opinions expressed here are mine.

I’ve been disappointed by Christian fiction before: shallow characters, shallow plots, and easy answers. I’ve been disappointed because I know that if Christ can handle my hard questions about the world, so can Christian fiction.

One Woman Falling handles the hard questions, and it does that incredibly well.

Domestic abuse is a dark reality that many Christians are unsure of how to approach. When is divorce justified? When is abuse “bad enough”? Shouldn’t a woman respect her husband? What if there is a child involved?

The protagonist, Cassie, asks herself these questions—and is forced to make some decisions—but the book never pretends to have easy answers. There is no miracle to fix everything in this story. The characters are flawed and broken. Yet God’s hand is evident throughout.

This story isn’t just deep—it’s well-written. Every inch of this story, I felt Cassie’s fears and hurts, her hopes, and her determination to protect her daughter. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book where the lead character felt so beat-down and helpless, yet simultaneously so impressed me with her determination and bravery. Cassie is both relatable and inspiring in a way that I rarely see accomplished in fiction.

One Woman Falling doesn’t take on the heavy topic of abuse simply for shock or drama. This is an authentic, heartfelt story from an author who has lived through domestic abuse herself. Its purpose is not merely to entertain, but to inspire empathy, understanding, and courage.

The church is beginning to realize that it has a blind spot in how it has handled abuse. Many victims feel alone, too afraid to call for help because they doubt anyone will believe them. And too often they’re right. Even well-meaning Christian leaders and laypeople have offered uninformed advice and pat answers. Different kinds of abuse, the pattern of abuse, the lies abusers tell . . . these are things churches must be prepared to face if we are to be Christ’s light in the dark corner of abuse.

One Woman Falling is a powerful spark for shining that light.

What a sad state of affairs so many marriages are in. I know things like the events in this book really happen. Melanie Campbell is very brave to tackle such a difficult topic in her fictional story. She states that much of the story is based on real events in her own life and the lives of others she has known, but she handles it all with great care. One has to wonder how men can go as low as Derrick did and still manage to hide their true nature from others. Is it that we don’t want to think a person we know could ever be like that? How is it that a man can get so out of control with his abuse of alcohol but still maintain enough presence of mind to act in a way that never leaves any marks that would give away the violence done to a woman? I have heard of “mean drunks” since a young age, but I would have to classify Derrick as an evil drunk. He took things to a lower level than normal. How does someone like him avoid doing harm to his child while in his condition? On a more upbeat note, I enjoyed the role that waterfalls played in Cassie’s life. For me, I would have been searching out lighthouses, but I suppose there are many more waterfalls than lighthouses, which would offer many more options. I especially appreciated Nannie’s strong faith in God and her unfailing prayer life. What a terrible shame that far too many go through circumstances like Cassie did but with no one to pray for them. Even if your life is never touched by trauma and tragedy like Cassie, you can be the one holding those others up in prayer. If you never thought of it before, one of the greatest lessons of the book is the reminder to always pray for the hurting ones. I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher. This is my honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.

One Woman Falling is the first book in the Whispers of Grace series by author Melanie Campbell.

Cassie Peterson can only count on herself and her sweet Nannie. Married to a despicable man, Derrick, Cassie lives in fear. Escape is the only way to protect little Renee.

Where can they go? How can she support them? How will they stay safe from an abusive alcoholic who will stop at nothing to reclaim what he believes is his?

Cassie’s story, told from her point of view, brings the reader so close to the horrors of domestic abuse and violence they can smell the beer on Derrick’s breath and feel his fingers digging into her arm.

The mature Christian faith shining from Cassie’s grandmother, Nannie, is the precious foundation of this touching story and Cassie’s life. “That’s why God lets us fall sometimes, so we can find our way back to Him. He wants to lead us to where we can be truly free.”

Campbell’s novel, One Woman Falling, is a powerful read that kept me turning the pages, cheering and weeping with Cassie to the very last page.
