An Action Hero And A Theater Owner Must Reinvent Their Careers! A Satisfying Read With Mature Characters And Great Chemistry.
Will Barnes, in his mid-thirties, is Hollywood royalty and king of the box office. The Viking-muscled action hero gave up his rock star status over a decade ago. After some struggles, he made a meteoric rise to fame of a different sort when he was cast as the lead in the Quicksilver superhero series, which is on its fourth installment.
Unfortunately, he knows even before walking the red carpet that the latest movie will destroy his career. It really is that bad. And although he just shows up and reads his lines, he will take the fall just as much as the director that tanked it. Because his agent has pushed the lucrative superhero scripts his way at the expense of broadening his roles, he has nothing to pivot to. If he is lucky, he will get the opportinity for a comeback in a year or so.
Sam, probably late twenties, is the proud owner of Hi-Point, a small independent theater in Silver Lake. When she decided to buy it three years ago, she had a vision of restoring the historical building to its former glory and showing the latest foreign and art house films. She used all her savings and took out loans to make it happen. She poured three years of her life into her vision, even gave up men. But now Hi-Point is going under in a few months. The slim profit margins have been eaten up by increasing taxes and rent, and soon Sam's savings will run out, leaving her no choice but to close for good.
Sam is happy to get her mind off the news and go out with her friends. Scoring tickets to the premier of her childhood crush's new movie, Quicksilver #4, is thrilling. One of her best friends, Pepper, recently got engaged to one of his best friends and former bandmate, Noah. She has met Will Barnes a few times recently, though they hadn't really had a chance to talk much yet. When they cross paths at the event, their gazes connect, and when they start talking they quickly realize how much they have in common.
Sam and Will's story is about having the vision and courage to take risks and pursue dreams. It is about reinventing and pivoting. They come into one another's lives when both are forced to totally rethink their careers, and they forge forward with a shared passion. Of course it wouldn't be Hollywood without some drama, but the theatrics are kept to a minimum. The focus is on the couple denying their feelings while trying to maintain a professional relationship. The chemistry betweem Will and Sam is so electric that the couple doesn't stand a chance keeping things strictly professional. They deserve their HEA!
This story is well-written with only a few very minor errors. The plot is thoughtful. The characters are well-developed. They feel like real people. The story follows the book "Dream Lover," which is Pepper and Noah's story, but it reads perfectly as a stand-alone. The POV alternates between Sam and Will. I rate this book 4.5 stars.
